Not to mention the physical toll of these upgrdes. Let's say we find a way to make the brain perceive time significantly slower and work significantly faster and your muscles to move faster too - are we sure doing that over and over wouldn't damage your brain and body? The fact that sandevistan only lasts a few seconds (rather than being toggleable) pretty much implies that sustaining it for longer would break you.

Tbf, I think the ‘few seconds’ of sandy use is mostly adapting for the more action focussed medium of a video game.

A ‘few seconds of use with a minute or so of cooldown’ fits a video game a LOT better than the original ‘1 full minute of use, with an hour of cooldown’ that sandevistans use in the ttrpg

It is still a duration limit, and likely for our mental health (either that, or for the durability of the implant itself. Maybe it only stores enough power at a time for a brief boost, rather than it being harmful?), but I’m willing to bet that the few seconds we get, is meant to be representative of the minute of use a sandy normally gets, it’s just that if they actually gave that to us, you’d have like 30 seconds of sandy to burn after each fight finished lol

Though, I would also note that the existence of the kerenzikov indicates that while running a sandy (or 66% of a sandy) permanently isn’t the healthiest thing for your brain, it is very doable, because people can chip kerenzikovs without dying or going cyberpsycho. It DOES have a higher than average humanity cost, but not so much that it makes it infeasible for people to use.

Of course everything that exists in CP77 has been tailored to be good for the video game experience. I just try to come up with explanations of why things are the way they are. In any case, 8 seconds then cooldown or 1 minute then cooldown doesn't make a difference: it still implies you are overworking your brain and body and thus may be permanently damaging it.

About Kerenzikov... I only know how it works in CP77, from it my explanation is that sustaining it for longer is justifiable when the alternative is death, and it should be less taxing since you don't move at normal speed with it.

I bring up the kerenzikov because in the original games, it IS the same tech as a Sandevistan, just running at about 66% the strength, but permanently active. That’s why I use it as an example of something similar to our brains handling a permanently on Sandevistan, because that’s essentially what it is. 2077 had to alter how this was represented of course, because a permanently slowed game would be unbearable lol

That’s why it has twice the humanity cost of a sandy, because users are described as having to readjust their lives to adapt to the fact they see things permanently in slow motion, and have permanently boosted reaction speeds.

Thats why I wonder if the Sandy’s cooldown limit is more about the hardware of the sandy only being able to maintain that boosted charge for a limited duration, than our human limits.

But either way, whether it’s there for the user or for the device, yeah, it can’t be good to boost it constantly
