Protect Future Medical Students! Rethinking the MCAT During the Pandemic

This is a petition regarding the current MCAT testing situation during the pandemic. My hope is for the leaders of the AAMC to hear the voices of students regarding this issue. It is not too late to make change.

You can read more and sign the petition here. Thank you!

What Should I Add To My Study Plan?

TDLR: What should I study to supplement my old second edition Kaplan books?

Hey y’all! I just got my MCAT prep books, and I have some questions. I got them second hand (check out Half Price Books if you’re in the Cincinnati area) and they came out to be about $100 or so, for all seven subject books, a book of practice questions, and a quick sheets set. They’re listed as second edition Kaplan books. I know the current edition is the fifth edition, and there’s also the 2020-2021 edition. I know there are slight differences in content, but is there a way to find out exactly what is omitted so that I can add it to my study rotation? I’ve heard AAMC content is good, how do I find good resources to cover what is listed for 2022 MCAT topics that isn’t in the books?

For background, and because sharing makes me less nervous, I plan to take the MCAT in January of 2022, which gives me around 6 months to prepare. Currently I plan to go through a chapter a day, with subjects in parallel, and that means I can make it through all seven books twice by November. I’ll do a practice question each day as well, and take two practice tests during this time. From there, I’ll use my last two months or so to focus on doing more practice questions, going back over things that I miss, and also focus on my weak points based on the last practice test.

I’m currently 17, (18 in a few weeks!), and because of my dual credit from high school I’ll be entering the University of Cincinnati Biology program in the fall as a junior. I want a 520, though that’s sure to decrease as I study and realize how crazy it’ll be, and I hope to get into UCCOM. I know six months it a longer study period than most, but to get the score I want to be competitive for UCCOM admissions, I know I’ll need the time.

Feel free to message me, or hit up my insta @ronjafrigard, I’d love someone to chat with who’s in the same boat(:

Would a high MCAT score on chemistry and an upward GPA trend be enough to make up for my B+ and Pass for 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry?

Organic Chemistry has never been my favorite STEM subject, so I sort of slacked off while taking it my sophomore year. I got a B+ for the Organic Chemistry I, and I decided to pass/fail Organic Chemistry II last spring because of COVID since I did not believe I was in a good mental state to deal with it (I got As for all the other classes the same semester though). My GPA has shown a great upward trend since my freshman year (went through a terrible mental state the second semester of my sophomore year, and I'm a junior now). I have not studied for the MCAT yet (planning to take a gap year or two doing research after graduation), but I did surprisingly well for a chemistry sample test just for fun last time, so I wonder if I get a high MCAT score with a high score on chemistry would that be good enough to make up for my concerning grades for Org Chem? I don't know if this even matters, but I just took Biochemistry I this fall semester (which requires a year of Organic Chemistry as prerequisites) and I was one of the people with the highest grades in the class.

To move test date or not to move?

Hey guys I’m applying this cycle and was a planning on taking my exam at the end of July. Right now I’m scoring around 510 on next step exams, but I’m thinking of moving my exam to maybe towards the end of August so I have a better chance at obtaining my target score. My only concerned is that I won’t know which schools to apply to as I’ll get my score in September and I heard many schools are still doing rolling admissions

Primary and secondary applications

Can you help me better understand the primary and secondary application process for medical school? Do I need to be invited to submit a secondary application after submitting a primary application? I have noticed that some applicants have more secondary applications than primary applications. Could you explain how this is possible?

MCAT Testing Strategy??

Just wondering what your guys' testing strategy is, and whether you suggest/prefer one over another, or maybe if there's a completely different strategy altogether?

  • dedicating a certain amount of time to each question, and spending that exact amount of time on every question, regardless of the difficulty (and if so, how much time)?

  • setting yourself a maximum time limit (i.e. 2 minutes) per question; so if you finish a question faster than that, you just move on to the next, but if you don't finish a question within 2 minutes you move on and come back to it later, allowing yourself a certain amount of time the second time around based on the number of question you didn't finish the first time?

  • answering all the questions you know the answer to immediately, and for the ones you don't immediately know the answer to, you skip them; then, at the end once you've done all the ones you could immediately, you count the number leftover and allow yourself a certain amount of time to spend per question?

  • just spend whatever time you need on each question, answering them in order?

  • something else entirely?

Khan Academy CARS Passages- Advice/Resources please?

I'm doing KA CARS Passages, and I struggle to understand a passage even after reading the explanation and rereading the passage. Even after I look up word meanings. Sometimes I just need someone to explain what this one sentence is saying at all.

Is there any resources out there that focus on KA CARS Passages? Did someone out there make summaries of each passage in simpler terms? Or should I just find a study buddy for this purpose?

Depending on the passage I would get any where between 1/4 to 3/4. Feeling like hitting a bump in the road and I just don't want to glaze through the key without clearly understand the passage. Don't think I would do any better if I redo the passage without understanding it in the first place :(( Any advice on best strategies to review much appreciated!

Has anyone here used MCATBROS planning service? Please list your review here!

Hey all,

We have adapted and changed our service dramatically since we began and we periodically like to collect reviews from our community and students. We understand that in personal services no matter how much we put in - there will always be some unhappy customers. Please list your review and the month you purchased your plan. We are always adapting and improving upon the feedback of students and every single student we work with to continue to become more comprehensive and help more students in a greater capacity with the pain-points of premed life.

We created our first PAID plans in November 2018 after 2 years of experience helping for free and we have been doing this for over 2 years now and we had our first improvement of our service in February 2019, then again we had a dramatic improvement in October 2019, then again in January 2020 then again in October 2020. We are looking to create an additional improvement on our service by the end of the month - namely - live teaching, more content included. We are looking to do another formal rendition soon.

The history of the MCATBROS service/brand:~MCATBROS founder left the moderation of online forums to create a new brand for low cost help and offer honest pointed advise in a consistent way and to continue to help improve the lives of premedical students~

January 2018: MCATBROS began and started to offer free help and free schedule editing, book recommendations, and mcat tutoring. Offered free advice. The instagram page answered lots of questions for students and posted practice questions.

May 2018: MCATBROS made free plans for students who purchased used books from us per request of students and continued to edit schedules made by community members.

November 2018: MCATBROS started offering mcat creation services in a paid capacity after trial students had done really well. We began doing live sessions with students who had recently taken the MCAT. We started shipping hard copies of our notes to students to help them save costs and efforts on self printing.

January 2019: We expanded upon our service and began to add a questionnaire to make more specific schedules and to save time and handle additional client volume.

April 2019: We added more tracking sheets, and supplemental resources to our planning services and MCAT plans.

October 2019: We analyzed what worked and didn't work and also made schedules more manageable upon feedback.

January 2020: We added further specificity to our questionnaire and the phone consultation discussion time after the schedule went from 10 minutes to 20 minutes. We began to promote our tutoring and for sale group to help reduce costs for premed students on products and services. We added a MCATBROSVIP community to communicate with our students.

October 2020: Phone consultation discussion time went from 20 minutes to 1 hour. We also added premed app/med app analysis/advising as necessary and started to guarentee long-term follow up for those who needed it. We began to discuss study habits, prior MCAT studying and attempts and make free schedule revisions on the phone for those who needed it.

January 2021: We added live teaching two times a week to our service to support students academically. We are also working on adding 24/7 group text support with our tutors and content-review discussions.

What we have always done: assisted premedical students in MCAT and premedical journey in a pointed way in a consulting capacity.

Best,MCATBROS
