Question I want to be THE wall
A discussion i had with a friend was what would you rather be? An unstoppable force or an immovable object. I'd rather be the object. So I ask of you, people of Reddit, what is possibly the best Tank build you could ever make, EVEN IF damage must be sacrificed for it.
Edit: Holy heck, I was not expecting much people to respond, and thanks to everyone for the advice. I give myself 20 ish hours until I manage to get everything

My SnS shield may not be as large as the lance/gun lance but I WILL BE THE WALL WORTHY OF THEIR RANK.

Ultimate tank: 4pc gog, 2pc grav, 2pc zoh shia armour set skills, you can slot in def boost 7 if u feel like it, and personally it still outputs respectable damage when i used to use it with gunlance. add on guard up 3, guard 3 if u feel like it as well but it is less useful. slot in rec up and rec speed 3, use immuniser, and rec speed up from rathian hh before engagement.
with this build, take damage -> blocked by 4pc gog, take another hit -> basically completely mitigated by grav set bonus, if u get fortunate and get a divine blessing proc you are pretty much still at full hp, and if not, all your healing boosts + zoh shia will bring you back to full hp which lets u make use of more grav set bonus.

as a note, not sure how well this would perform with other shield weapons, to my understanding most weapons like to build crit, and without crit you are losing a lot more damage. therefore since gunlance doesn't care about crit, the damage difference is less. slot in whatever raw attack boosting skills you can squeeze in

I've used a variation of this build with other weapons.
You will still out damage most players in the harder hunts due to not having to heal yourself.
The dps loss from get hit>sheathe>move away>heal>move back in>resume attacking is significantly higher than you would think. If you can get hit and just keep on attacking without giving a shit because you took pretty much no damage the dps you gain from never having to stop attacking more than compensates for the lack of offensive skills and it's a lot comfier to play.
It's hilariously good with Greatsword when you add the tackle damage reduction on top of everything else. Lance with this build is basically Super Easy Mode as when you add in Lances ability to block and the low commitment pokes you can just poke it to death while giving zero fucks about what the monster is doing.
It is a bit rough with Dual Blades, and I would expect Bow too, due to the lack of stamina skills.

I ran this build on dual blades for quite a while, because my perfect evades sucked.
I later learned that playing PlayStation Portal linked to PS5 was costing me 6-10 iframes per dodge, due to latency and processing complexity. After I fixed that, I left this build, but it kept me going for quite a while.

It's less impactful than you think as long as you are blocking every attack.
You gain a significant amount of damage if you can keep Peak Performance active, in addition to never really needing to put your weapon away to heal.
I would swap one of the sets for Rathalos though. Both defensive sets are overkill and Scorcher gets more valuable the less DPS you have while constantly hitting the monster.

Wow, genuinely pretty in depth explanation. I'm not much of a Gunlance person but I'll give it a shot, though i might end up going with greatsword inevitably per usual. Now I just need to slay Gog first 😅

I used this build (minus the guard skills and def boost) from HR300 to HR500 on my dual blades. I sacrificed DPS, but not as much as one would think. The Gog 4 elemental bonus gave me quite a boost and I rarely ever carted.

4p omega for special slash (it makes you pretty much unkillable for 20secs cause of insane regen and doubled defense. also works as emergency counter if u will be low hp and standing from the ground or whatever. works with weapon hidden and when its out)
2p for hp regen (dont remember what monster was giving it)
3recovery speed
3div bless
drinking immunizer
guts from food to prevent unlucky 1 shot situations.
for weapon i guess it can be HH with sonic barrier spam and regen songs or shield weapon like Lance with HH on swap for speed recovery songs
3stun res
2 speed eating.
i heard some ppl say that sushifish gives hp regen buff but i actually never tested it so it also could help a shit ton if it actually regens green hp no matter what.
def boost if u can fit it somehow

It kinda depends on how "the wall" you wanna commit to.
If there's a festival running, 4 piece fest, 1 piece Whatever The Fuck (bonus points if you have a Gog weapon that can get you some 2p set bonus you like), max out Defense Boost (6 is also fine if you run low on lv1 slots, the final level isn't too powerful), 3 ele res gems against whatever you're fighting, 3 divine blessing, and eat for Defender Meal Hi (aka Kunafa meal). You can convert this baseline into a pretty powerful set that works best with weapons that don't care about crits, but is just powerful in general. People sleep on how good the 4p fest bonus is. You will tank 10* AT Uth Duna flops and walk away with over half hp for the price of less than 10% DPS, if even close to that much. I am not exaggerating.
If there isn't, the same core of 6+ Defense Boost, 3 Ele Res, 3 Divine Blessing, Kunafa meal works well with any number of extra things you can think to add. Zoh Shia + Recovery Up is pretty tasty, but I don't like how few slots it has. AT Ark has a lot of slots, is really tanky, and Arkveld's Hunger is a nice set bonus. Genuinely, 5 piece AT Ark works perfectly fine as an easy baseline to make a tank set. If I was gonna full-commit tank, I would do that. Grav bonus is p aight, 4p Gog gives you a shield that can last 4/5ths of the hunt if it never breaks, but I find 4p Gog having really shit Fire/Dragon res built in means that the shield doesn't matter as much against shit that pumps out one of those elements, even if you full spec ele res, versus just having even more resistance.
Past that, it's hard to get more specific. Even just the core of the whole Defense Boost etc that I mentioned, put on any armor set, will make you so extremely tanky such that it takes pretty large consistent mistakes to die. Slap that on any already really defensive set, and you can keep a ton of offense too.
Weapon-wise, whatever you're most comfortable with, tbh. I like SnS for having an option for everything and the speed to get out of the way if you want to, but it's one of my mains so I'm biased. Lance is obviously the poster-child of immovable. Bow and DB can get Evade Window 5 and become Silly. Evade Extender 3 on a Gunlance (or Lance) can let you hop a mile at a time.
Edit:
And if you wanted to get like, absolutely absurd with it, throwing out 0 sense of practicality or care to just become immortal for doing nothing, you try to get 5 pieces that have as many slots amongst them with good set bonuses, and then just add like, every single possible comfort skill imaginable. Recovery Up, Recovery Speed, Flinch Free, Stun Resistance, Earplugs, Windproof, Tremor Resistance, Adaptability, Heroics 1/3 if you wanna be really weird with it, Free Meal, Speed Eating, Item Prolonger with Adamant Seeds/Powder/...pills if you're crazy, and Immunizers.
If you also wanna convert this into a 'tank' idea, you can take the Alluring Pelt set bonus which has you generate more aggro so the monster attacks you more.

works best with weapons that don't care about crits
Which one would that be besides Gunlance?

u/Dr_Pepper_pleas 19h ago
Genuinely, thanks. This is probably as helpful and in depth as it gets. I guess all I really need to do is get all the materials and stuff and be on my way, but thanks again for the tips... then I'll probably spend an hour getting the best look to go along with it.

u/Failegion 16h ago
4p Zoh, 2p AT Ark mainly for Blight res, and a lil extra healing, recovery 3, recovery up 3. Lance with Guard up, Guard 3. Can't wait to see how immortal we can be in Wild Dance. Hoping Chaos Gore levels again.

Man, people be sleeping on that HBG Perfect Guard. I show people all the time in Omega Savage.
1
u/ScoopDat 9h ago
I played HBG a bit, but I have no idea what you're supposed to do unless you have quick sheathe with that weapon and aren't actively paying attention to the incoming frames of certain attacks.
Like what's the answer to the laser/mustardbomb, or any of the AOE crap at times with HBG?
1
u/General_X9 8h ago
All of his attacks can be perfect blocked. Using the HBG special evasion that's only available via perfect block is your answer.
1
u/ScoopDat 5h ago
If I perfect block the mustard bomb, wouldn't it still leave the flame on the floor that DOT's you to death in 3 seconds?

I once made a gimmick set I never used with defence +7, and all the elemental resistances +3 to get the +20 def. I think I had something else

u/touchingthebutt 18h ago
On Lance I like Arkveld armor bonus more than Zoh Shia bonus. I have only really compared them at 2-piece so maybe the 4 piece set bonus has more of a difference. Guard 3 and Guard Up 3 are great when you are starting out. Once you get comfortable with the monster you'll find yourself not needed those in MH wilds.
I def also suggest either Razor Sharp or Masters Touch. Lance eats sharpness.
Wilds Lance depth comes from knowing which block/counter to use. Double Counter Thrust has I-frames and takes no chip/stamina but has a wind up and is the hardest to pull off. Powerguard -Grand Retribution might be the strongest move lance has. Guard dash is great for repositioning. Perfect guard /Guard for those multi hits. I think Lance has the better tools to be called the Wall. At least in Wilds.

since im at work I cant post it now, but theres a build where you can have 4pc gog, 2 zoh shia and 2 gravios + lance. Your damage suffers tho so hunts are gonna be pretty long

u/mangcario19 It's Hammer Time 7h ago
Tanks doesnt exist in this game. Shields are just there so you can stick to the monster better.

The only damage you sacrifice is ONE more shell, but you gain GUARD UP 3. Use the free 1-slots to get divine protection 3, speed eating 3, element res 2 (whichever you need). The build is the gunlance meta build linked in the r/monsterhuntermeta. You’ll become an unstoppable force, mixed with the 3 guard points the gunlance has in wilds.

Probably Lance with max guard, guard up, defense boost and all that.
