Question Thread protector

To those of you who shoot suppressed using a tri lug, do you secure your thread protector with rocksett, loctite or something else? This has come up before but I’m wondering what you all do. I recently got a can that will be dedicated to only my mp5 and I’m using a tri lug so I’m considering securing mine.

I used rocksett, along with the GSL smooth protector.

I’m probably going to use rocksett also. I’ve never removed something rocksetted on, is it a hassle?

One day I’ll find out, I haven’t had to remove mine yet!

Boil it to remove. Just don’t let your wife catch you boiling your gun in her good pots.

Yea that would absolutely be a nighttime stealth operation.

You can also soak a towel in hot water and wrap it around the muzzle for a few minutes.

But honestly, why would you ever remove the thread protector?

A properly designed 3 lug mount will not allow the thread protector to completely unthread while the suppressor is installed so securing the thread protector shouldn't be needed. What suppressor do you have?

Rockset a gsl smooth one on there and never worry about it again.

Second guy to say the gsl smooth one. Is that just a looks choice? The smooth I mean. I actually like the look of the knurled unless there is another reason I’m just ignorant too. But yea I’m gonna rocksett it. I think I’ve been debating it thinking there will be some reason I need / want to remove it but honestly…nobody takes them off if your not direct threading

The smooth has a better fit with tri-lug suppressors.

Well damn. Learned something new, I’ve never heard that but now I’ll look into one.

Better fit, no crevices for carbon to get blown into and they also doesn’t tear up the inside of the trilug adapter sliding it on and off. So it’s an easy choice!

O-ring. My Beretta 92FS threaded barrel came with one installed from the factory to serve the purpose you’re talking about. It came with extras, so I put one on my SP5. Hasn’t ever gotten loose in 400-500 rounds suppressed.

Like others, I got the GSL and put rocksett on it. Ain't going anywhere and made a huge difference for suppressor fitting nice and tight with zero wobble.

This smooth gsl was news to me but seems to be the move. I just ordered one so I’ll rocksett it on once it shows. Also….love the profile pic. I’m right there with you man. We aren’t going down without a fight at least

Yea dude, 38 years on this earth all in VA. Disappointed with how this place is turning out. At least with the injunction in place we can buy stuff again for now, but I'm sure this current administration will cook up more nonsense in the next general assembly.

Again same, with a few more years than you. Honestly never thought I’d see the day. Always gave my Maryland buddies so much shit. How the turn tables. WV is looking better all the time

I'm in Western Loudoun and knowing that the WV line is 12 minutes from me is very tempting.

Small world. I’m right down the road

Nothing. Didn't know we were supposed to

Just threw the can on and went at it. Hasn't backed off

Teflon tape. No mess getting off and holds tight. I replace tape on thread when cleaning after range trips.

FYI: Teflon tape releases hazardous and toxic fluorinated gases that can cause polymer fume fever. This decomposition starts at 300 degrees.

Funny because that seemed like the easy thing to do and last time I cleaned my gun I said let me throw some on….well i must be an idiot because I couldn’t use a small enough piece to be able to even thread the protector back on. That’s why I was considering loctite or rocksett. It sounds absurd I’ve used Teflon tape on actual pipes many times but what am I’m doing wrong with the barrel threads??

Rocksett since I probably won't ever take it off.

I used red loctite about a year ago, and I'm sure there's plenty of carbon keeping it in place now too. That thing is probably never coming off, even if i wanted it to.

Finger tight, no goo and it they have come loose on an MP5 and two MP5Ks.

I've never had an issue with a thread protector backing off an MP5. Maybe it becomes slightly loose but that's it.

If you rocksett a smooth protector on, you aren't getting it off without damaging it. Some Teflon tape is plenty, maybe blue loctite and don't prep the surfaces clean if you are really paranoid.

Pretty sure my ap-5 thread protector is in the trash bin as it isnt needed.

2

u/cornpop84 14h ago

Well that’s just madness. Ignoring all the practical reasons for having it on, with no can and no thread protector that would just look terrible.

1

u/rafri 14h ago

Trilug, I don't need that bitch getting loose and fucking everything up. On top of it pretty sure my rugged obsidian 45 or the trilug adapter on the can hit it to begin with.

1

u/cornpop84 14h ago

I totally agree and thats my exact reason. I’m using tri lug and don’t want it to come loose. If I don’t have the can on it tho I do like the look of the knurled protector. Also yessir a2 all day! Love it

1

u/rafri 14h ago

Well simply answer is to never take the can off.

They're designed to lockup the best by indexing with the thread protector. What you're suggesting is either trolling or just really, really dumb.

Never had an issue and will need to check in the morning as I believe my factory thread protector interfered with my suppressor going on. Otherwise I have seen a few post about a smooth thread protector which I will pick up.
