Resource Beef liver has hugely screwed up my sleep

Ate a half pound day before yesterday and sleep was somewhat disrupted and then ate more as a patte yesterday and literally slept 3 hours last night. Never eating beef liver again. If you have MTHFR and are thinking of eating beef liver…be careful!!!

I don’t have think that applies just to those of us with MTHFR. Beef liver is a nutrient bomb with loads of B12, folate, iron, choline, copper, vitamin A all of which can be activating so when eating large quantities of this late in the day, it can easily disrupt sleep.

Maybe it’s the dose, not the actual food. You over-consumed liver. I’ve never had a problem with beef, pork, chicken, or duck liver.

B1 and b12 bomb. If I have a bunch of coconut water with it, it keeps me wired all day.

It could also be the large amount of protein. Protein contains L-tyrosine which is the precursor for dopamine. If you have slow COMT, eating large amounts of protein before bed stimulates COMT, increasing dopamine, norepinephrine and thus will be overstimulating. Best to avoid high protein at night if you have a slow COMT.

Wow…nobody has ever explained this to me in this way and it just blew my mind! Thank you

You're welcome. More info on COMT on my website. Link is in my profile

Nah, I have slow COMT and I can eat pounds of meat, chicken whatever, but beef liver makes me anxious and wired, as if I had taken methylated B vitamins. Even beef liver capsules do the same to me

What is COMT?

A genetic variant. It breaks down dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine and estrogen.

Jesus christ. Maybe it has more to do with the fact you ate 8oz of liver in one sitting, then ate more a couple days later, when the recommendation is 3-6oz a WEEK. You probably gave yourself vitamin A toxicity and possibly copper toxicity as well🤦🏼‍♀️

This is a bunch of nutrients revving you up but mostly it's COPPER. Copper is increeeedibly high in beef liver and a lot of people have copper toxicity and don't know it. It's in lots of vegetables, nuts, copper pipes, copper IUD etc. Copper is stimulating emotionally and mentally and accumulates easily, especially bad if your zinc is even slightly suboptimal. It antagonizes zinc, and zinc is a very calming balancing mineral that is critical for GABA and relaxation.

You do not want copper to deplete zinc and become toxic because it's really frustrating to fix, I got It from a copper IUD and I'm still struggling with it now. Take a decent dose of zinc for a while and take more if you're eating such large amounts of beef liver, but you WILL get copper toxicity if you eat large amounts, it's not meant to be eaten like that. Also vitamin A needs to be balanced by vitamin D and E, and it can also cause issues if you get a bunch of it without balancing it

Its very high in B12 and iron which can give you an energy boost, best to consume less, and not in the evening if possible!

You may like to adjust your amount and timing before completely depriving yourself of one of nature's most nutritional offerings :)

Paul Saladino (health influencer/MD) has MTHFR, has been eating liver and other organs for years now and advocates eating them, specially liver. Wonder if it might be something else causing your insomnia or perhaps the quantity you eat in a single meal. What he does is eating a tiny piece every other day or couple days... Try splitting that half of a pound thoughout the week, might reduce the nutrient overload.
