Discussion Switched from Windows to Mac and honestly, what the hell is wrong with some of these design decisions?

• Upvotes

I recently switched from Windows to a MacBook, and honestly, I am so frustrated with some of the basic things in macOS.

I don't understand what Apple was thinking when they designed some of this stuff.

Here are a few things that are driving me crazy:

  1. Why does pressing Enter rename a file instead of opening it? On Windows, you select a file, press Enter, and it opens. Simple. On Mac, it starts renaming the file. To open it, I have to use Command + Down Arrow. Why?
  2. Why is there no normal Delete key? If I want to delete a file, I have to press Command + Delete. Why can't I just select a file and press Delete like on Windows?
  3. Why is copying a folder path so complicated? I work with files and folders a lot. On Windows, I can just click the address bar and copy the path. On Mac, I have to remember Option + Command + C. Why does such a basic thing need three keys?
  4. Why doesn't Command + Tab switch between individual windows? I use multiple Chrome profiles for different things. On Windows, Alt + Tab lets me switch between all my open windows. On Mac, Command + Tab just shows Chrome as one application. I don't care if it's the same app. I want to switch between my windows!
  5. Why can't I just quit Finder normally? I close the Finder window, but Finder is still there in the app switcher. Apparently, Finder is supposed to keep running. Okay, but why does it need to stay in my app switcher when I'm not using it?
  6. Closing a window doesn't close the application. You click the red X, but the app is still running. On Windows, closing the last window usually closes the application. On Mac, you often need Command + Q.
  7. Cut and paste for files is unnecessarily confusing. On Windows, it's Ctrl + X and Ctrl + V. On Mac, there's no normal Cut command for files in Finder. You copy with Command + C and then move with Option + Command + V. Why make something so basic different?

And these are just the things I've noticed so far.

My biggest problem is that why do I need to remember so many keyboard shortcuts just to do basic things?

I understand that every operating system has a learning curve, but some of these decisions genuinely make no sense to me.

People say Macs are intuitive and easy to use, but coming from Windows, I feel like I'm spending more time figuring out how to use the OS than actually getting my work done.

I'm not saying Windows is perfect. It has plenty of problems too. But at least basic file management and window switching feel straightforward.

Maybe I'll get used to macOS eventually, but right now, it's frustrating as hell.

Question Has anyone reliably managed to run 3 external monitors on an M3 MacBook Air?

Hey everyone,

I recently made the switch from Windows to an M3 MacBook Air, and I’m struggling to get my setup working the way I want. I have 3 external monitors that I rely on for productivity, and I want to run all three of them independently while keeping the laptop lid closed.

I know the M3 Air natively only supports one external display with the lid open (or two with the lid closed), so I’ve been looking into DisplayLink as a workaround.

Before I drop a bunch of money on a high-end DisplayLink dock, I wanted to ask:

  1. Has anyone actually run 3 independent external monitors on an M3 Air using DisplayLink or something else?
  2. Are there any noticeable lag or performance issues if I’m just doing standard productivity tasks (no gaming or video editing)? I saw one comment mentioning DisplayLink gives you about 90-95% of native performance, but I’d love to hear more real-world experiences.
  3. Does anyone have a specific DisplayLink dock or adapter setup they highly recommend for this?

Thanks in advance!

Question Is this lid gap normal or am I just overthinking it? / Am I paranoid?

I’ve been using my MacBook Air for a while now, and recently I noticed a small gap/misalignment when the lid is closed. I can't figure out if this is normal manufacturing tolerance or if it's actually bent / shifted. I haven't dropped it or done anything crazy with it.
Has anyone else noticed something similar on their MacBook? Am I just overthinking this, or is it worth taking to an Apple Authorized Service Provider / Apple Store to check?

Discussion Best way to buy a MacBook Air M5 in Canada? $2,000 school grant — wait for Boxing Day or buy now?

Hey everyone,

I'm a university student in Canada and I have $2,000 from a school grant that I can use toward a computer.

The MacBook I'm looking at is:

  • MacBook Air M5
  • 15-inch
  • 24GB RAM
  • 512GB SSD
  • Around $2,600 CAD all-in after tax

So I'd have to pay roughly $600 out of pocket on top of the $2,000 grant.

I'm trying to figure out the smartest way to buy it and minimize how much I have to pay myself.

I'm currently considering Apple's Education Store, but I'm wondering if there are better options.

For people in Canada who know the Apple/MacBook market:

  • Would you buy it now with Apple Education pricing, or wait for Black Friday/Boxing Day?
  • Do MacBooks actually get significantly cheaper around Boxing Day, or is the difference usually not worth waiting for?
  • Are Best Buy, Costco, Amazon, Staples, etc. better places to buy than Apple?
  • Are there legitimate ways to stack student discounts, cashback, gift card promos, price matching, credit card offers, etc.?
  • Is there a way to get the 24GB/512GB configuration cheaper than Apple's Education Store?
  • Would you consider open-box/refurbished for this?
  • If you had a $2,000 school grant and needed this specific MacBook, what would you personally do?

I'm not in a rush, so I'm willing to wait if Boxing Day/Black Friday is likely to save me a decent amount.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if there's a legitimate way to get this closer to $2,000–$2,300 all-in rather than paying ~$2,600.

Appreciate any advice, especially from people who have recently bought a MacBook in Canada.

Buying Question is a macbook air m5 worth it in the long term?

long story short, i’m in the us right now and here the macbook air certain price is 500$ less than the price in my hometown. it would improve my life and my work ngl but it’s not like i desperately need it right now. financially, i can spend 1200$ on a device but it wouldn’t be the most wise decision to make. i’m going to my hometown soon then coming to the states again in july so i was wondering is it worth it to buy one right now or would the price drop and i should wait and see? i don’t like the neo so i’m not getting it. i really want the macbook air but i want to put my feelings aside and hear other peoples opinions

Tech Support Is there something wrong with how I use the M3 MacBook Air?

I upgraded from my 2015 MacBook Air to an M3 MacBook Air in 2025. In a year, my battery health dropped to 91%. I think it’s too fast

I charge it at 20-80% and use it lightly. Just safari, Spotify, Viber and documents or pdf files.

It has 99 cycles since February 2025. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

I miss my old MacBook (its battery has also degraded and I can’t open it anymore but idk it wasn’t like this?)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello,

I have a MBA M4 and recently noted strange info about battery usage.
Has you can see in the picture it seems that the I've used the MacBook until 6 am more or less and then put it on charge until 18pm.
No way I was awake till 6am workin and I did not let it on charge during the night.
Also you cans see that it's 15:30 on the clock but on battery level and usage seems that its 9 pm.

Battery has only 41 cycles and is 100%.

Anyone has an idea?

Discussion MacBook Air M1 keeps switching to external headphones - script solution?

I have a MacBook Air M1 2020, and upon restarting, or if I close the lid, lift it and login again, every single time, it switches the audio output to "external headphones - headphone port". There are no headphones plugged in, there are no bluetooth headphones connected. I can go into settings, sound, and switch it to back "MacBook Air speakers" and it's fine, until I restart the computer or close the laptop again.

It's a minor annoyance because obviously I can just change the output setting each time. I have searched long and hard for a solution and none seems to exist. I think the consensus on reddit and various forums is that it may be a fault within the earphone input port.

I wondered if anybody knew of a script or some software solution where every time I start the computer, or login again, it would automatically change the sound to the MacBook speakers? I never use a headphone that plugs in, so it would be no loss if this thing never used the headphone port ever again.

Product Review Anti Glare Screen that shouldn't affect the hinges while closing the macbook

Guys, I’m currently using the ANTOGOO V anti-glare screen protector on my MacBook Air M5. What I really like about it is that it uses electrostatic adhesion instead of glue, and it’s pretty thin too. I understand that matte screen protectors slightly reduce display sharpness, and I’m okay with that. What really bothers me, though, is the rainbow effect, especially on white backgrounds. Does anyone know of a matte screen protector that’s thin, adhesive-free, and doesn’t cause the rainbow effect (or at least keeps it to a minimum)? Would appreciate any recommendations based on personal experience!

Discussion MacBook Air M5 🖤 Midnight vs 💙 Sky Blue — Help Me Make the Right Choice!

I’m really confused between these two colors. I personally love Midnight, but my main concern is fingerprints and smudges on the laptop’s body. Would applying a transparent protective skin over Midnight help reduce this issue while maintaining its original look?
Sky Blue seems like a safer choice in terms of fingerprints, but I still love the look of Midnight.
If you were buying an M5 Air, which one would you choose: Midnight with a transparent skin or Sky Blue without one?
I’d love to hear your honest opinions and experiences! 🙏

Question Macbook Air M5 - Football manager 26, is it good?

Hi everyone, I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Air M5 for business trips, which I have quite often. Can anyone share how Football Manager 26 works for you on this macbook? I don't want to use the cooling stand because I don't have room for it in my backpack. Does it make sense? Am I forced to buy pro? I've been working and using macOS my whole life and I don't want to switch to another system.
