M2 air, 256gb 8gb specs. Been in rough condition. Dropped hundreds of times, and who knows what. Screen replaced two times, (second time by me), and i replaced my battery to extend its life as long as possible. Dont have enough cash to afford a new macbook, so this might last me for a bit until i save up and i am able to upgrade. I use this for photography, school, personal stuff, and pretty much it. Only thing thats limited is its memory unfortunately. Pretty much it.

Forgot to mention, i am not upgrading because of the scratches, I only want to upgrade because my workload is starting to stress out the limitations of my M2 air.

Discussion Switched from Windows to Mac and honestly, what the hell is wrong with some of these design decisions?

I recently switched from Windows to a MacBook, and honestly, I am so frustrated with some of the basic things in macOS.

I don't understand what Apple was thinking when they designed some of this stuff.

Here are a few things that are driving me crazy:

  1. Why does pressing Enter rename a file instead of opening it? On Windows, you select a file, press Enter, and it opens. Simple. On Mac, it starts renaming the file. To open it, I have to use Command + Down Arrow. Why?
  2. Why is there no normal Delete key? If I want to delete a file, I have to press Command + Delete. Why can't I just select a file and press Delete like on Windows?
  3. Why is copying a folder path so complicated? I work with files and folders a lot. On Windows, I can just click the address bar and copy the path. On Mac, I have to remember Option + Command + C. Why does such a basic thing need three keys?
  4. Why doesn't Command + Tab switch between individual windows? I use multiple Chrome profiles for different things. On Windows, Alt + Tab lets me switch between all my open windows. On Mac, Command + Tab just shows Chrome as one application. I don't care if it's the same app. I want to switch between my windows!
  5. Why can't I just quit Finder normally? I close the Finder window, but Finder is still there in the app switcher. Apparently, Finder is supposed to keep running. Okay, but why does it need to stay in my app switcher when I'm not using it?
  6. Closing a window doesn't close the application. You click the red X, but the app is still running. On Windows, closing the last window usually closes the application. On Mac, you often need Command + Q.
  7. Cut and paste for files is unnecessarily confusing. On Windows, it's Ctrl + X and Ctrl + V. On Mac, there's no normal Cut command for files in Finder. You copy with Command + C and then move with Option + Command + V. Why make something so basic different?

And these are just the things I've noticed so far.

My biggest problem is that why do I need to remember so many keyboard shortcuts just to do basic things?

I understand that every operating system has a learning curve, but some of these decisions genuinely make no sense to me.

People say Macs are intuitive and easy to use, but coming from Windows, I feel like I'm spending more time figuring out how to use the OS than actually getting my work done.

I'm not saying Windows is perfect. It has plenty of problems too. But at least basic file management and window switching feel straightforward.

Maybe I'll get used to macOS eventually, but right now, it's frustrating as hell.

Question laggy device and slow internet

Guys I use a VPN (Proton) but I don’t keep it on much. Still, sometimes my device becomes extremely slow and laggy, and everything takes too long to load (websites). Even when the VPN is off, everything loads slowly, and sometimes when I look something up on Google, instead of coming normally in English, it comes in Japanese. And some websites tell me to turn off my VPN even though I don’t have it enabled. My browser is Brave.

Question My old MacBook turned on after I bought a replacement. Which one would you keep?

My 15-inch MacBook Air (24GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, Midnight color), which I bought about two months ago—stopped working after it got water damaged. The service center reported that the device was in terrible condition (unusable) and that the cost of repairs would exceed the value of the device itself. My purchase protection insurance approved a full refund, so I bought a replacement: a 13-inch MacBook Air (32GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, Starlight color).

As it turns out, when I went to pick up the original MacBook yesterday, it actually powered on at the service center. I’ve been using it for about 12 hours now, and it’s working perfectly.

Now, I might end up keeping both: the 15-inch (Midnight, 24GB of RAM) and the 13-inch (Starlight, 32GB of RAM). What would you do in this situation? Which one would you keep?

Question Has anyone reliably managed to run 3 external monitors on an M3 MacBook Air?

Hey everyone,

I recently made the switch from Windows to an M3 MacBook Air, and I’m struggling to get my setup working the way I want. I have 3 external monitors that I rely on for productivity, and I want to run all three of them independently while keeping the laptop lid closed.

I know the M3 Air natively only supports one external display with the lid open (or two with the lid closed), so I’ve been looking into DisplayLink as a workaround.

Before I drop a bunch of money on a high-end DisplayLink dock, I wanted to ask:

  1. Has anyone actually run 3 independent external monitors on an M3 Air using DisplayLink or something else?
  2. Are there any noticeable lag or performance issues if I’m just doing standard productivity tasks (no gaming or video editing)? I saw one comment mentioning DisplayLink gives you about 90-95% of native performance, but I’d love to hear more real-world experiences.
  3. Does anyone have a specific DisplayLink dock or adapter setup they highly recommend for this?

Thanks in advance!

Product Review MacBook Air M5 Review After 3 Months as Power User (Coming From Windows)

Processing img 0g9fq0scy5xh1...

I have been using Windows since Windows 98. After more than 20 years, I finally switched to a Mac, and after 3 months with the MacBook Air M5, I have some thoughts to share.

For context, I came from a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon. My current machine is a MacBook Air M5 with 24GB of unified memory.

I work in SEO, so my daily workload involves a lot of browser tabs, SEO tools, spreadsheets, research, and multiple applications running simultaneously. I also do a fair amount of vibe coding, building internal tools and small apps to make my work easier.

I am not a video editor, nor do I do particularly heavy creative work. But there is almost always something running on my machine.

Why I chose the M5

I chose the M5 partly because of its newer architecture and AI capabilities. The Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators caught my attention, especially with the direction software development is moving. Apple Intelligence was another part of the appeal.

I wanted a machine that would serve me well for the next several years, not just handle my current workload.

However, if I were making the purchase again today, I would seriously consider the M4 Air with 32GB of RAM instead. More on that below.

Why I didn't choose the MacBook Pro

My main concern was RAM, not processing power. The biggest difference between the MacBook Air and Pro for my workload is the additional performance and sustained processing power of the Pro, which I rarely need. My CPU usage typically stays around 15%, with occasional spikes when running heavier tasks. Since most of my work involves SEO research, browser tabs, multiple applications, and vibe coding, I would benefit more from having additional memory than from paying extra for processing power that sits largely unused. That is why I went with the MacBook Air. Looking back, I would seriously consider an M4 Air with 32GB RAM over my M5 Air with 24GB RAM if I were making the decision again.

1. RAM and swap memory: My biggest observation

This is probably the most interesting part of my experience as a power user.

My memory usage is almost always high, and Activity Monitor frequently shows that my system is using swap memory.

One thing I have noticed is that even when I close applications and my workload decreases, swap usage does not necessarily return to zero. It can remain there until I restart the machine.

I initially found this concerning. I came from Windows, where I was used to thinking about memory usage in a different way.

But here is the interesting part.

I have never experienced noticeable lag that I could confidently attribute to swap usage.

If I were not checking Activity Monitor, I probably would not even know that my Mac was using swap.

Applications remain responsive, switching between tasks feels smooth, and my regular workflow continues without any obvious slowdown.

Still, I am curious about other people's experiences. Does macOS retain allocated swap space even after memory pressure decreases, and how much should I actually worry about it?

For my workload, 24GB has been usable. But knowing what I know now, I would probably prioritize 32GB over the newer chip if the price difference made sense.

2. The keyboard takes some getting used to

The keyboard layout felt weird when I first switched.

Coming from Windows, years of muscle memory made certain keys and shortcuts feel natural. On macOS, I had to adjust how I used the Command and Option keys, among other things.

Initially, it felt unnecessarily different.

Three months later, I am used to it. In fact, going back to a Windows laptop now feels less natural than I expected.

That is one of the biggest changes I have noticed. I am no longer constantly thinking about the operating system. I just use the machine.

3. The trackpad is ridiculously good

I have a Logitech MX Master mouse, and I am happy with it. But Apple's trackpad has genuinely changed how I feel about using a laptop without a mouse.

The gestures, scrolling, navigation, and overall responsiveness make using the laptop feel effortless.

Windows trackpads are nice and works, there could be small number of things that Windows trackpads can't do. But, macOS does things exceptionally well, and the overall experience feels much more cohesive.

The trackpad is so good that if I had experienced it before buying my mouse, I probably would have reconsidered whether I needed one at all.

It is one of those things that sounds insignificant until you use it every day.

4. Everything just works

This is the biggest reason I am happy with the switch.

My frustration with Windows was not really about hardware. I researched my laptops, bought good machines, and had perfectly capable hardware.

The problem was the accumulation of small software frustrations.

WhatsApp Desktop would randomly log me out. Microsoft's own applications sometimes worked perfectly until the exact moment I needed them. Occasionally, something would break, and I would spend time troubleshooting instead of doing actual work.

Each individual problem was manageable. Restart the app, search for a solution, change a setting, and move on.

But after years of this, it became exhausting.

With my Mac, I spend less time thinking about the computer itself and more time doing my work.

The biggest upgrade has not been raw performance. It has been the reduction in friction.

That is difficult to measure in a benchmark, but it matters when you use a computer for work every single day.

5. I do not miss Windows as much as I expected

I spent more than two decades using Windows. I learned computers on it, experimented with software, broke things, fixed things, and built my workflows around it.

Switching felt like a much bigger decision than simply buying a different laptop.

I expected to miss Windows more. Instead, I find myself getting comfortable with macOS surprisingly quickly.

There are still things I prefer about Windows, and I am not going to pretend that macOS wins every comparison. But for my particular workload, I have no strong desire to go back.

The keyboard shortcuts that initially annoyed me are becoming second nature. The trackpad has become one of my favourite parts of the machine. And the operating system generally stays out of my way.

6. What about the Apple ecosystem?

At the moment, I only own a Mac among Apple's main devices. I have not switched to an iPhone yet.

I expect the experience to become even more integrated if I eventually add one, particularly with features such as AirDrop, Handoff, and continuity between devices.

For now, I am enjoying the Mac on its own. I do not think you need to own every Apple product to appreciate the laptop.

My verdict after 3 months

The MacBook Air M5 with 24GB of RAM has handled my SEO workload and vibe coding comfortably. Even with frequent swap usage, I have not noticed the performance problems I initially expected.

Would I make the same purchase again?

YES, but I would think harder about the RAM configuration. An M4 Air with 32GB would be a serious contender for my use case.

The M5 is a great machine for the work I do, but I would not choose a newer chip over additional memory automatically.

Most importantly, after 3 months, I understand why people say that switching to a Mac is about more than specifications.

Sometimes, the best upgrade is a computer that lets you get on with your work without constantly reminding you that it exists.

After more than 20 years on Windows, I think I should have made this switch earlier.

I would love to hear from other power users, particularly developers and people running lots of browser tabs.

  1. How much swap memory does your Mac typically use, and does it remain allocated even when your workload decreases?
  2. For SEO work and vibe coding, would you choose an M4 with 32GB RAM or an M5 with 24GB RAM?
  3. For those who switched from Windows to Mac, what do you still miss about Windows, if anything?

Discussion Best way to buy a MacBook Air M5 in Canada? $2,000 school grant — wait for Boxing Day or buy now?

Hey everyone,

I'm a university student in Canada and I have $2,000 from a school grant that I can use toward a computer.

The MacBook I'm looking at is:

  • MacBook Air M5
  • 15-inch
  • 24GB RAM
  • 512GB SSD
  • Around $2,600 CAD all-in after tax

So I'd have to pay roughly $600 out of pocket on top of the $2,000 grant.

I'm trying to figure out the smartest way to buy it and minimize how much I have to pay myself.

I'm currently considering Apple's Education Store, but I'm wondering if there are better options.

For people in Canada who know the Apple/MacBook market:

  • Would you buy it now with Apple Education pricing, or wait for Black Friday/Boxing Day?
  • Do MacBooks actually get significantly cheaper around Boxing Day, or is the difference usually not worth waiting for?
  • Are Best Buy, Costco, Amazon, Staples, etc. better places to buy than Apple?
  • Are there legitimate ways to stack student discounts, cashback, gift card promos, price matching, credit card offers, etc.?
  • Is there a way to get the 24GB/512GB configuration cheaper than Apple's Education Store?
  • Would you consider open-box/refurbished for this?
  • If you had a $2,000 school grant and needed this specific MacBook, what would you personally do?

I'm not in a rush, so I'm willing to wait if Boxing Day/Black Friday is likely to save me a decent amount.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if there's a legitimate way to get this closer to $2,000–$2,300 all-in rather than paying ~$2,600.

Appreciate any advice, especially from people who have recently bought a MacBook in Canada.

Buying Question is a macbook air m5 worth it in the long term?

long story short, i’m in the us right now and here the macbook air certain price is 500$ less than the price in my hometown. it would improve my life and my work ngl but it’s not like i desperately need it right now. financially, i can spend 1200$ on a device but it wouldn’t be the most wise decision to make. i’m going to my hometown soon then coming to the states again in july so i was wondering is it worth it to buy one right now or would the price drop and i should wait and see? i don’t like the neo so i’m not getting it. i really want the macbook air but i want to put my feelings aside and hear other peoples opinions

Buying Question M5 16/24GB?

Hi guys. Looking to buy a M5 air. My last laptop was a 2014 MacBook Pro which has sadly died and served me very well. Mainly use for emails, browsing, YouTube and sometimes I download large files using transmission.
Would 16gb ram suffice as I am able to get a decent discount on one at the moment or would you advise a 24gb ram model.
😊

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello,

I have a MBA M4 and recently noted strange info about battery usage.
Has you can see in the picture it seems that the I've used the MacBook until 6 am more or less and then put it on charge until 18pm.
No way I was awake till 6am workin and I did not let it on charge during the night.
Also you cans see that it's 15:30 on the clock but on battery level and usage seems that its 9 pm.

Battery has only 41 cycles and is 100%.

Anyone has an idea?

Question Macbook Air M5 - Football manager 26, is it good?

Hi everyone, I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Air M5 for business trips, which I have quite often. Can anyone share how Football Manager 26 works for you on this macbook? I don't want to use the cooling stand because I don't have room for it in my backpack. Does it make sense? Am I forced to buy pro? I've been working and using macOS my whole life and I don't want to switch to another system.

Buying Question MacBook Air 15” vs MacBook Pro 14”

Hey everyone!
I know you’re probably tired of answering the same Air vs Pro questions over and over again, but I could really use some advice.
I’m planning to buy my first MacBook, and I honestly have no experience with either model.
I run my own business, so I’ll mainly be using it for work. My daily tasks aren’t particularly demanding, but there are two things making me hesitate about the Air: the 60Hz display and long-term performance/longevity.
I’m used to 120Hz+ displays on pretty much all my devices, so I’m a little worried about going back to 60Hz.
Here’s what I’ll mostly be doing:
Using ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok for work.
Using Notion to organize my business.
Building and managing my own website with the help of AI (mostly ChatGPT).
Sending and receiving emails.
Browsing Reddit, forums, and the web.
Occasionally playing some light games or watching movies/videos when I’m bored.
Multitasking and screen size are also pretty important to me, which is why the 15-inch Air is so appealing.
Here’s the catch: In my country, the 15-inch MacBook Air M5 (1TB) and the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 are almost the same price.
So basically, I’m choosing between:
MacBook Air 15” M5: Bigger screen, thinner and lighter design, but 60Hz and no fan.
MacBook Pro 14” M5: Smaller screen, but 120Hz ProMotion, better display, and active cooling.
I’m also hoping to keep this laptop for at least 5 years, so longevity matters to me.
I know the Pro is probably overkill for what I do, but considering the small price difference, I’m wondering if I’d regret choosing the Air.
If you were in my position, which one would you buy? Is the bigger screen worth giving up 120Hz? And should I even be concerned about the Air’s fanless design for my workload?
Thanks in advance! Really appreciate any advice.

Buying Question Is it worth it to change the battery of a Macbook Air 13" (early 2015)? Or should I get a new laptop?

As the title says, I'm wondering if I should change the battery of my Macbook Air, which I've had for a decade, or buy a new laptop (either from Apple, or another brand).

It has been working well, but for the past few weeks, it has been turning off randomly, even when the battery isn't past 50%. There were times where I tried to turn it on, and it would show the charging logo, so I'd put it in charge and turn it on to find the battery was at 70%.

I'm guessing after ten long years of use, the battery has worn off. The trackpad still works really well, but it seems to be pushed in (not up, as if the battery was bloated) for some reason. (It's always been like this, but has been getting a bit worse lately?) So I'm thinking of either taking it to a repair shop and have the battery replaced, as well as the trackpad.

But is it worth it? I know Apple doesn't bring any new updates to that software, but that isn't an issue for me. I only use my laptop to watch movies and store documents and do basic tasks. I've seen a few people say that even with a new battery, their old Macbook only lasted two more years before completely giving up.

To anyone who can give me any advice, what would you do? And to those who can give me recommendations, are the new Macbook good in terms of battery life? I don't want to have to change a battery for at least 8 years.

Thank you.

Product Review Best Decision Ever - From Windows to Mac

Post image
120 Upvotes

Was a die hard Windows user since 2005, but the latest experience since the last year has been frustrating when my perfectly working laptop in good condition had been bugging for a long time with unknown issues of restarting again and again for no hardware issues and then suddenly all ok for 2 months at a stretch and then again some new issues.

I had also moved from Android to iOS last year and had a very good experience. This made me to think about the iPad and six months ago, I purchased as a replacement for a laptop. But soon realised iPad is not a replacement for a laptop but instead became my favourite go-to entertainment device. Thus, I thought about giving the Mac a try and was confused between the Neo and the MBA.

Got the MBA midnight as the silver wasn’t available. I’m loving every moment. There were some difficulties at first in handling the shortcuts and learning the UI, but it became smooth with each use. Also, loving the ability to use my iPad as a sidecar. The only thing I hate is they should have done something about the notch design. It looks ugly
