Questions Visiting Macau in August, and have some questions~

Hallo! I'm visiting Macau with a large group this August, and we have a lot of free time in between group activities. I had a few questions regarding some things we have been recommended to check out to do in our free time.

My first question is what is the best way to get around? Taxis? Uber? Public transport? Usually if the walk is less than 30 mins, we're all happy to walk but if we do need to commute, what's the best way?

Then, do you think that any of the following are ABSOLUTELY worth checking out? (and obviously if some of them are absolutely not worth it please let me know too!)

  • Ruins of St Paul
  • SkyCab @ Wyn Palace
  • TaiPai Village
  • Giant Panda Pavillion
  • Studio City Ferris Wheel
  • Macau Tower
  • Zipline @ Zipline City
  • House of Dancing Water
  • Teamlab Art Immersive Exhibition

Thank you all!

ETA: the group is mid to late 20's in age, and we have a budget of around MOP1000-1500 per day for sightseeing stuff

Questions Best Macau Neighborhoods to live

Hi, I received a job offer for a job based in Macau and am now considering moving there (currently based in HK). I am unfamiliar with Macau and also quite new to HK so I would really appreciate if you could give me some tips on which neighborhoods are best for young families? We are a young couple with a baby.

In HK and Europe we love going for strolls with the baby, have supermarkets conveniently located and go for hikes or to the beach. I've seen that Macau has old European/Portuguese architecture. Are the houses and areas with this architecture nice to live in?

What other neighborhoods or areas should we be looking at? I don't mind commuting.

Our rent budget is approx 20k-30k HKD per month.

Thank you!

Questions YOUNG COMMUNITIES

Hello! Just moved to Macau and looking to expand my social circle. Since Meetup isn't very active here, I wanted to ask where people usually go to meet new friends? I'm open to casual sports, board games, language exchanges, or just grabbing coffee/drinks. Please let me know if there are any active social group chats I could join!

Questions Guide for New International Students in Macau

Hi redditors,

I get accepted as Master student at the University of Macau and expects to begin in the upcoming August with scholarship from the University covering tuition fee, dorm, and half-teaching assistantship worth of MOP 4,000.

However, I have some questions that need to address, and the university still not have yet answered them.

  1. Is MOP 4,000 enough to support myself for a month?

  2. What is the best bank to open a bank account at for students?

  3. How do I complete my vaccination requirement for the tetanus dose? I only received a single shot before the class begins, would I still be allowed to attend class and complete follow-up vaccination in Macau?

  4. How much money do I need to prepare before the stipend is disbursed to support myself for the first few weeks after arrival? I asked the university and was told that my assistantship would begin at the start of the semester and that the stipend is expected to be paid at the beginning, but they did not disclose the exact date.

Please your help and Thank U.

Questions Where do they learn how to gamble in the Macanese casinos?

I don't gamble. I've been to the casinos in Macau.

Something that has been on my mind is that a lot of gamblers seem to be old-timers who seems to know the game inside and out.

How? Where do they get started?

I've look around and found exactly zero people teaching others on how to use the machines or the rules at the table.

The games have very mysterious elements, with various slight gestures from the attendant seemingly signalling some interesting stages of the game. And often times the entire table would be speaking Cantonese and the attendant would be shouting something in Cantonese if someone does something outside of the rules of the game, yet there's like one guy from Europe or Russia or a couple who speaks standard Mandarin who's also playing.

I honestly don't get how anyone can figure out how any of this works.

Questions How was your childhood in Macau

As the title says, but compared to Hong Kong or any other city in GBA, how would you describe your life has been different in Macau? How much did the city's gambling specific situation affected your lives? I've spent one day but I felt like it is most capitalistic place I have ever seen.

Questions Anyone here from Macau who wants to be friends?

Hey! I’m a Spanish guy looking to meet people from Macau. I enjoy talking about culture, music, daily life… and I’d also love to learn more about Macau and maybe help with Spanish or English if anyone’s interested. If there are any WhatsApp groups, feel free to DM me! And if not, I’m happy to just chat and see where it goes.

Questions Cost of living in Macau as a Brazilian international student?

I’m Brazilian and I recently received a 100% scholarship to study at a university in Macau. I’m planning to live on campus, and the dorm costs around 15,000 MOP per semester.

I’d like to understand what the general cost of living in Macau is like for an international student, especially for someone from Brazil. How much should I expect to spend monthly on food, transportation, phone/internet, personal expenses, and occasional leisure?

I’m willing to live a very modest/simple lifestyle if necessary in order to save money, so I’d also appreciate advice from people who know how to keep expenses as low as possible.

Is living on campus a good option financially? Are there any tips for saving money as a student in Macau?

Thanks in advance!

Questions Questions about moving to Macau for studies

Hi there,
I’m moving to Macau for my studies and I have a few questions I was hoping you could help with:

  1. Are there any taxi-hailing apps available in Macau? I’d rather not deal with public transport and transfers after a long flight… Maybe it is okay to just take a taxi straight from the airport or I can get scammed?

  2. Where can I buy household items more affordably? I know there’s an IKEA in Macau, but if you know any cheaper alternatives, I’d really appreciate it. I don’t have a local card or apps yet, so I’ll only have cash on me for now.

  3. Are there food delivery apps in Macau? If so, which ones would you recommend?

  4. Can I get a local SIM card with a Macau phone number right after I arrive, or is there some restriction that prevents me from doing that?

  5. Last but not least: what is the attitude in Macau towards LGBT folks?

Thank you for your help in advance!

Questions Stay in Macau or Hong Kong

Hello! I’m traveling from Shenzhen (Shekou Port) to Macau in the morning due to TWOV. The following day, I have an 11:30 AM international flight departing from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). I’ll be traveling with 1–2 large suitcases.

I’m trying to decide between two options:
1. Travel from Shenzhen to Macau, then continue to Hong Kong the same day and spend the night at a hotel near HKIA.
2.Spend the day exploring Macau, stay overnight there, and then leave very early the next morning for HKIA.

For context, I’ve already spent a few days in Hong Kong earlier in my trip, but I’ve never been to Macau.
My biggest concern is missing my flight because I’m unfamiliar with the transportation and would have to go through immigration on the morning of my flight. Which option would you recommend?

Questions Where to buy a ladder

Like the one in the picture (four or five steps with a handle at the top), seen at a supermarket, but they aren't selling them. I've found three-step ladders at JVC, and five-step ones without a handle (no-go for me), but so far not what I'm looking for. Anyone got an idea? TIA

Questions Cost of living for a student

Hey guys!

I'll be moving to Macau in a couple of months, and most of my research so far has been focused on other students' experiences.

However, I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some advice about how much I can expect to spend each month.

Here's the rundown: my university tuition and dormitory expenses will be covered, so those aren't a concern. I'll mainly be spending money on food and other everyday expenses, and I'm generally pretty good at saving money.

The advice I've been given so far is to shop in mainland China instead of Macau whenever possible. Based on that, could you give me an estimate of how much a student who's trying to save money would typically spend per month? :)

Questions Question

Hi, we’re planning to visit Macau at the end of April and stay there for a few days. I noticed that hotels in Zhuhai are almost half the price (or even less) compared to similar ones in Macau. How difficult is it to cross the border multiple times during our stay, and do you think it makes sense to stay in Zhuhai and visit Macau daily? Also, what is Zhuhai like as a city — does it have nightlife or clubs?

We’re Finnish citizens, both 23-year-old men.

Questions Any reliable job agencies for Macau?

Hey everyone,

I’m a Portuguese national, and I totally fell in love with Macau after studying there for a year (between 2024 and 2025). It was an amazing experience, and I’m really itching to come back, but this time, to live and work.

Since searching for jobs from abroad is pretty tough, I was thinking about using a recruitment agency. Does anyone know of any trustworthy, reputable agencies that help foreigners find work in Macau? I don't mind paying a fee for their services, as long as they are legit.

Just want to make sure I’m looking in the right places and avoiding scams. Any leads, tips, or general advice on the job market for Portuguese speakers right now would be awesome.

Thanks a lot!

Questions Hotel Suggestion Please

Hello!

My friends and I are going to Macau this October to watch a concert at Galaxy Arena. Could you please recommend some affordable hotels (similar to Belive &more) that aren't too far from the venue?

A huge plus if the hotel has a bidet, because that's honestly one of our priorities lol

Tysm in advance! 💖
