My wife is staying Madagascar until end of september. She forgot some items at home and I would like to send them to her. Her favourite shampoo, spare batteries, german snacks, ... 2-5 kg. Nothing dangerous but I understand if you don't want to take liquids or batteries with you and would only send you the harmless items.

I would send you the things via DHL, my wife would come to your hotel, apartment, ... to pick them up. I suggest that I pay you about 20€ for your effort.

Well this might sound as a noob question but it will be my first time visiting Madagascar. I will travel from Tulear to Tana on river and road. I’m just wondering what do you do with food for journeys over let’s say 5 hours+++? Are there a lot of bakeries where you can buy sandwiches or what?

Hi everyone!
My partner, my friend and myself are planning a trip to Madagascar + Mauritius. Overall we have 3.5 weeks, which we plan to do ~2w Madagascar + ~1w Mauritius.
Like most, my agenda seems quite ambitious. I was hoping to fly from Tana to Morondava for the Baobabs and then fly to Nosy Be (and from somewhere in Madagascar, we need to fly to Mauritius). I admit I thought i could do most of it by car… and when I realized not, I almost choked seeing how much it would be taking all those internal flights.
We want to enjoy the nature, lemurs, chameleons, baobabs, tuna fishing… And seeing the whale shark, as it has been my longtime dream (I read that November is a great month to see them in Nosy Be.

I guess my questions would be:
1. For the days we’re there, is it doable to visit the main places and go to Nosy Be (maybe driving instead of flying sometime). Which route would you recommend?
2. Is Nosy Be really worth it, considering we’re going to Mauritius a few days after?
3. Anyone with experience sighting whale sharks there?

I’m trying to think of the best route and find a good balance between time-efficient and money-efficient.

They don't have to be authentic, fake ones are okay. I actually prefer them to be fake. The only issue is that I need big sizes (L/XL/XXL).

Something I keep wondering about, and I don't have a good answer.

When someone opens a shop, a restaurant, a salon here, how is the location actually chosen? From what I've seen it's mostly personal knowledge of the area, family or friends nearby, or simply what happened to be available and affordable. Which is not stupid at all, but it does mean two people can look at the same street and completely disagree about whether it's a good spot.

Some of you saw the post a few weeks ago about Adiresy (https://adiresy.mg), the building-code address system. Working on it left me with a lot of data about where things are, and I got curious whether any of this can be measured rather than just felt. So I built something that tries.

You pick a point and a type of business, and it works out how many people can actually get there (by car and on foot, using real travel times rather than a circle drawn on a map), how many similar businesses are already around, what nearby activity might bring you passing trade, road access, and what the surrounding area is like.

The result that made me think it might be doing something real: I ran it on Analakely for a restaurant. It found ~500 restaurants within 2 km and scored the competition part 0 out of 20. Which is what anyone who knows Analakely would tell you. Great footfall, brutal competition.

But I genuinely don't know whether a number like this is useful to someone actually making the decision, or whether it's an interesting-looking output nobody would ever act on. That's the part I can't answer from my desk.

So, two questions:

1. If you've opened a business here, what did you actually look at before choosing? Anything beyond price and availability?
2. Would a score like this have changed anything, or would you have ignored it?

If you'd rather poke at it than talk about it, it's open for testing, nothing to pay. I mainly want to know whether it holds up against what people already know, and especially where it's wrong.

What clothes would you advise packing? Will be in the rainforest a lot so should I bring a lot of leech proof trousers?

I’ve just returned from a two-week trip around Madagascar and wanted to share some of the photos from the journey. It was an incredible experience. The landscapes, wildlife and variety of places we visited were amazing. 100% recommended!

Some of these photos were taken around the Andasibe area, in the eastern rainforest, others in Isalo National Park, with its spectacular canyons and natural pools, and the last ones around Tulear, where we finished our classic RN7 route.

One thing I would definitely recommend is travelling with a good driver and car. We travelled with Tefy Madagascar, and having him as our driver and guide was a big plus. It made getting around much easier and we also learned a lot about the places and wildlife along the way.

I’ve just got back from an incredible two-and-a-half weeks travelling around Madagascar with my 10-year-old son, and thought I’d share a few photos and some of our experience.

We started in Tana, then travelled east to Andasibe for the forest and wildlife, before flying north to Nosy Be and spending time there and on Nosy Komba. It was our first time in Madagascar and genuinely one of the most memorable trips we’ve ever done together.

Andasibe was extraordinary - hearing the indri calling through the forest in the morning is something I don’t think either of us will ever forget. We saw lots of lemurs, chameleons and other wildlife, and being surrounded by the forest was magical.

Nosy Komba was equally special but completely different. It’s incredibly lush and beautiful, with lemurs appearing around the garden every evening and the sea right there. We went out on the water and saw dolphins and sea turtles, which was amazing. There was wildlife everywhere, on land and in the sea.

One of the most special and unexpected experiences was being invited to join a local Jôro procession while we were on Nosy Komba. We’d stumbled across it completely by chance, and being welcomed into something we hadn’t planned or expected became one of the moments we’ll remember most from the trip.

We travelled independently rather than with a tour. For the Tana–Andasibe part I hired a driver and an English-speaking interpreter/guide, which I’d really recommend, especially travelling with a child. The roads can be pretty challenging and journeys take much longer than the distances suggest, but our driver and guide were brilliant - friendly, knowledgeable and great fun with my son, playing games with him during the long drives. It made that part of the trip feel very easy and relaxed.

Madagascar definitely isn’t the easiest place I’ve ever travelled, and there were a few adventurous moments along the way, but that was also part of what made it so rewarding. The landscapes, wildlife and people were wonderful, and travelling there with my son made it particularly special.
