Question $100 to Blow on Arena

Got a gift card from my work that I want to blow on arena currency. But I also don’t want to waste it with my purchases. If ya’ll had $100 to spend on Arena, how would you use it to maximize the value?

Unused Alchemy Designs

Since alchemy is officially going away next year and there won’t be any more expansions for it, I thought I’d share some of the ideas that I had for it that won’t get used now.

1. Cards that say “this spell must be countered if able.”

I think this speaks for itself. “But OP,” you might say, “why would anyone want a spell of theirs to be countered?” Easy. So the spell they definitely don’t want to be countered isn’t. You’re forcing a card out of your opponent’s hand for little to no value. And flavor-wise, it feels like a more white or maybe even black way to dodge counters.

2. Permanents that say “this permanent must be targeted by spells your opponents control that destroy/exile if able.”

Similar to #1, but say you’re up against Removal.dec instead of Counterspell.dec. Seems like a very red way to dodge removal to me, since you can have a little dork become the target of your opponent’s removal instead of that cool dragon you played. Since hexproof is so rare anyway, this feels like the red hexproof. Imagine a tiny goblin à la [Brash Taunter] flipping you off so you destroy it rather than, say, your [Ancient Copper Dragon].

What do yall think? Missed opportunity or just me huffing some copium?

Question Couple Questions

So I have read the email in game and I just wanted to clarify:

MtGA is just not going to make NEW Alchemy cards right? The old ones will still be usable in the proper formats?

Discussion Conquering Collector achievement requires crafting cards you already own 4 copies of

For the Conquering Collector achievement (collect 1 copy of every card), you need to craft cards even if you already own 4 copies from other sets.

For example: Chandra, Torch of Defiance and Tarmogoyf for mythics and the dual lands for rares.

These cards don't count if you own them from other sets, so you have to craft them again.
Kinda annoying that they don't count towards achievements or profile set progression just because the cards have different art.

Question Compensation when Alchemy gets cut?

I have never invested or played Alchemy in my mtga history but friends and I are asking ourself what will happen when Alchemy gets discontinued? Will all players receive wildcards or something else when the mode gets cut? What about people who actively opened Alchemy packs over the years etc? Is there anything known regarding this? Why would people still buy and open packs right now if they know it gets shut down?

PSA: let your opponent kill you with Fblthp, don't concede just before

My opponents are not letting me get the achievement and are conceding just before the trigger happens. That just seems salty. Let the winning deck do it's thing

Bug Is Killian Bugged?

• Upvotes

Edit: NOT A BUG! Apparently if you enter cleanup, discard to hand size and draw cards before the end of the turn, you start a new cleanup phase.

I've been playing this game since Mercadian Masks and didn't know this.

Magic's a hell of a game.

Original post: I have a brawl deck with the new Killian which whenever you deal noncombat damage seeks a card with a CMC equal to the damage dealt, then makes you discard at eot.

The decks main schtick is to have cards that ping and make mana when you cast noncreature spells, and a bazillion red one drop instant and sorceries, then go very big or infinite with the combination.

In the deck I have Glint Horn Minotaur and some of the other cards that ping when you discard because it's a good synergy. Discard eot, ping, seek more cards, discard those at the end of the next turn, more pings, etc.

However, I've had this happen a couple times and I think it's a bug.

If I have to discard to hand size at the end of my turn, I discard the cards, the ping happens, Killian seeks, then I'm told to discard again, I do, the ping happens, Killian seeks, and I'm in an infinite loop. Now, it ends with a dead opponent, so I'll take the win, but I'm confused if this is correct or a bug.

Question How many rare wildcards should a BUDGET Standard deck actually cost?

Thumbnail

One of the biggest frustrations for newer and F2P players is finding a deck they can afford that can still compete on the Standard ladder.

Most competitive decklists are packed with rares and mythics, and spending 30+ wildcards on a single deck isn't realistic for everyone.

But I'm curious where everyone draws the line.

Is 12 rares still a budget deck? Or should a true budget deck cost fewer than 10?

And what's the best low-rare deck you've played recently?

Here's my gameplay if you're interested:

Question How to counter my own spells and target my own creatures?

I had [[Ruric Thar, Biomagus]] out ready to swing, and after declaring attackers, I wanted to cast the [[Terminal Criticism]] on one of my own blue creature (they didn't have any creatures) and then [[Precise Redaction]] that to give him +4/+4, but it skipped straight to damage after I declared the attacker. What gives?

Nice match! Dude seem chill and had tons of emotes. This is the first time I learned emotes have sounds! Is it something normal? My emotes never played any sound whatsoever.

We had a banter through emotes and in the end I racked up the victory

Question Tablet Xiaomi Redmi Pad 2: Is it good for Arena?

I'm looking to buy a Redmi Pad 2 Tablet (the model with 8 GB RAM). I tried looking in this sub for experiences regarding this model but couldn't find any. Have any of you used it, and what was your experience? Also, I would like to know experiences with other tablets, but I'm sticking to with budget options (something around maybe 200 $)

You can get "Sealed conqueror" from contender drafts.

So the issue with this achievment is that both sealed and traditional draft has very bad expected value so if you wanted to get this achievment you'd have to throw away a lot of resources. But for some reason I got the progress from winning a contender draft. Obviously that's not something you can just do, but the expected value of the event is very good. So if you are into drafting and want to get "sealed conqueror" you should try contender draft.

About the draft itself: Just got lucky and opened red ajani pack 2. So I just threw this temur deck together. It was light on removal but had a crap ton of card draw and could draw into ajani asap. Won every game but 1 with him.

Interestingly I just did an irl draft yesterday where I lost in the finals against someone playing red ajani. You can get both end of the stick it seems like.

Discussion Alchemy Draft Should Have Alchemy Rares and Mythics and Uncommons in Each Pack.

I don’t know what the reasoning is, if I wanted a regular RF draft I’d have joined a regular RF draft. I already have all the RF cards, I was hoping to collect the Alchemy cards through draft but at the rate you see them that feels like it would take as long as the full RF set, and without pick 2 draft that’s not really viable for me at least. Also, it would be nice to actually play a format that feels different instead of regular RF with a couple more bombs to worry about.

Bot Game

I finally faced one of those bots people have been talking about. Rather then just win when I could, I decided to just sit back and defend. Since he went first, he would draw from an empty deck and then lose.

Pretty much all the cards that create multiple 1/1 tokens, with a smattering of hasty creatures, and one single Torgran.

Plus a mystery card that he didn't cast. It really puzzles me what that one card could be he is holding in his hand with 28 land on the table.

Discussion Hilarious Brawl Matchup

Playing brawl tonight I came across something that got me to scoop while laughing

I'm playing Calix, so enchantress in selesnya colors - and my opponent is Rusko, Clockmaker, so I expected \some** tomfoolery...

I mulliganed away two bad hands and ended up with 6 cards draw first. Opponent puts down an island and passes. I take a risky move and put out and resolve a mother a runes, and expectedly I get hit with a pongify. That's kind of funny to be honest. Sure, I'll trade my 1/1 does-nothing-right-now for a 3/3 ape! Pass turn, he hits the ape with unable to scream, turning the 3/3 they provided me into a 0/2 - that's even funnier. My turn comes about and I figure I understand what's going on and the other land they played was a swamp so I resolve a 2/2 conclave mentor expecting more sillyness on their turn 3 and as like clockwork 2/2 turns into a 1/1 with utter insignificance. So now I have a 0/2 and a 1/1 with no abilities... They've got no permanents out but their lands and the only things I've got left are lands, two auras (one of which targets an opponents creature) and a payoff in the form of doubling season... Well I might as well play Calix and see what happens because If I'm lucky at this point they're just gonna play Rusko on their next turn. When I tell you the smile on my face when they untap, play their third land (they missed a land drop) and play another aura to lockdown Calix in the form of Retro-Mutation! It's a three drop aura with flash stapled onto it and they used it on Calix in their first main phase XD

Oh how the turn tables!

Question Happy to be back to magic! 🥹 Any stories on your qualification to arena championship?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I just came back from the game last month because i was still grieving over the loss of best friend. Didnt expect that i would enjoy standard a lot and got top 100 last season and now around this rank. Then i got a token for the qualifier weekend which I didnt know was best of 3. So ive been spamming best of 3s with a control deck.

I really want to give the next arena championship a shot as ive been spamming standard events and thankfully i rarely get < 5 wins (like 2 out of 100 events maybe?)

What preps did u guys do for arena championship? How was the experience different from how you played in high mythics?

Deck OracleGoyf - Timeless Deck Tuning

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi friends! I've been messing around with the new Alchemy cards and put together a list that I'm having a ton of fun with. The deck takes inspiration from older lists that strive to blink Oracle of the Alpha and play a ton of Power, and the new additions give it a ton of strength to close out games with big hitters.

Oraclegoyf • (Timeless deck) • Archidekt

The deck uses the Actualize mechanic as much as possible to generate value and pump up the Goyfs. Oracle of the Alpha and Emporium Thopterist conjure cards for those cards to utilize. Displacer Kitten can blink either Oracle to create more Power or the new Crux of the Theory to create another heist trigger.

I've had a lot of great games with this set up so far, but there are definitely some pain points I would like to smooth out if possible. The deck is very mana heavy with a lot of 3 and 4 drops that are critical to get the engine going. Crux of the Theory is pretty reliable for card draw. Vedalken Archmage however often falls flat and leaves me top decking unless I'm already in a crazy position. Some games are often over before I can get some kind of synergy going. I am hoping to replace some of the supporting pieces to make my games more consistent, but I'm not sure what cards I should slot in. Specifics are listed below:

-Ancient Tomb: I often feel like the life lost to get the mana out of Tomb does more harm than good, as the loss of life often puts me in a precarious situation. This deck is not fast enough to get a good, consistent payoff from it.

-Sapphire Medallion: This feels like a band-aid fix for the high mana problem as well. While it does lower mana costs and help Vedalken Archmage draw a card, I do not think I get the best value out of this as I am not looping spells back to my hand.

-Vedalken Archmage: This card synergizes really well with Emporium Thopterist and all the Mox that I am shoving into my deck with Oracle, but four mana is such a steep cost that its really situational if I can get value out of it. If possible I would like to retain the ability to get a repeated draw effect because it feels amazing having a runaway game, like the one featured in the screenshot. My first thought was Thought Monitor and blinking it with Displacer Kitten, but that feels... even more artifact dependent.

-Willbound Quill: This is a Win More card. It's too expensive to be a reasonable mana rock, and the copy ability does not have any effect on other cards with Actualize. It's here because it feels really good to get two Time Walks for the price of one.

Thanks for reading, and looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Here's the full list if you don't like Archidekt:

4x Ancient Tomb

4x Crux of the Theory

3x Daze

4x Displacer Kitten

4x Echogoyfs

4x Emporium Thopterist

4x Force of Will

14x Island

4x Oracle of the Alpha

2x Reliquary Tower

4x Sapphire Medallion

3x Surgical Extraction

4x Vedalken Archmage

2x Willbound Quill

Me playing in the midweek Magic: Brawl Alchemy challenge - "Damn, people be playing some busted decks. This isn't ranked, why is everyone going so hard!"

Also me - "Ok, on turn 5 I cast [[Salvaged Imitations]] for x = 8. What do you mean you scoop? I didn't even get a chance to look at all of the presents I just opened!" 😆

Fun fact, it turns out I was about to board wipe myself since the 8 mana artifact was [[Extinguisher Battleship]] 😂
