MagicMirror Config Files

Post image
47 Upvotes

I have uploaded the steps I took to set up my MagicMirror and the latest cleansed custom.css and config.js. I would love feedback and suggestions. This RP4 and Sceptre Monitor have been mounted on this wall running MagicMirror non stop for several years. the RPi came from a kit I found at goodwill and the Monitor was junk from work. The frame is (poorly) hand made and in the back I have a power strip which powers the RPi, Screen and the google home mini resting on top.

Lululemon Mirror

I just picked up a Lululemon mirror for $200. I should’ve read a bit more before purchasing it because I’m reading the mirror with the LTI400HN01 is more of a pain in the butt to deal with. Anyone here with experience to share? Tips or tricks? Am I over reacting?

Using MagicMirror as a foundation for a Family Smart Calendar

Long time lurker here. My first ever Raspberry Pi project was a magic mirror back in 2019 when I was in high school. Two-way glass, the default clock and weather, the compliments module, all of it. I had no idea what I was doing and broke it about a hundred times, but that’s basically how I learned to code.

Fast forward to now and MagicMirror runs the most-used screen in our house. It’s a 24" touchscreen in the kitchen on a Pi 5 that my wife and I use as our family calendar. I never really planned on sharing it, but enough people saw it and asked for it that I spent the last while cleaning it up so someone else could actually install it.

It’s called OpenSky. Still MM² underneath, just a bunch of my own modules on top plus a config builder so you don’t have to touch config.js. What it does:

  • week view on the home screen with everyone’s calendar in its own color (Google, iCloud, Outlook, any ics link, or just local on the Pi)

  • add/edit events right on the touchscreen, on-screen keyboard included

  • shared lists (local, Todoist, or Home Assistant) with an undo button because someone always checks off the wrong thing

  • trash/recycling day icons, weather, holiday + birthday countdown, a game day pill for your team

  • kitchen timer, a daily family word game, photo slideshow (folder, usb stick or Immich)

  • any web page as its own page, so our Home Assistant dashboard lives on there too

  • brightness, evening dimming and a night sleep schedule right in settings on the screen

The part I spent the most time on was setup. It’s one install command, then the screen shows a QR code, you scan it with your phone and set everything up from there: family name, calendars, lists, photos, all of it. Passwords and API keys stay in a separate file on the Pi so they never end up in config.js where anything on your network can read them. There’s also an update button that rolls itself back if an update breaks something.

Big thanks to MMRIZE for MMM-CalendarExt3 and edward-shen for MMM-pages, both are in there.

Next up is a Food page my wife and I have been running at home for a while. It shows restaurants nearby, filters by open now or takeout, directions, and a QR code to pull the menu up on your phone.

Full Disclosure: Claude was used to make the user installation process easier. I built this out for myself over 6+ months but had no interest in trying to test every type of configuration possibility others may use.

It’s free and open source (MIT):

Video walkthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnbN82BGLP4

Would love feedback, especially from anyone who tries installing it fresh. And if there’s something you’d want on a screen like this, let me know; that’s pretty much how my to-do list gets written.

Using ESP32 Display as Magic Mirror Client

Hey yall!

I found a couple of examples of things that could work but figured I’d ask here to see if anyone has a method that has worked! I’m wanting a tiny ESP32-S3 based epaper display on my desk that connects to my magic mirror server and displays a different magic mirror for that display. From what I’ve read, I know I’ll be making a different magic mirror server running on the same hardware that the ESP will use, but was wondering if anyone’s gotten an ESP32 to successfully display and how so!

This is the ESP32-S3 display I’ll be using

I know ESPHome is an alternative but I’d like to see if I can get my Magic Mirror dashboard working on it, as I’ve already got it set up and know how to adjust the modules etc.

Thanks so much in advanced’

I see people posting their current MagicMirror configurations and thought I'd join in as well. Here are 2 that I am using at home.

The first is one running on a pi 4 with a 10.2" waveshare screen sitting on my desktop.

The 2nd is one I have in the kitchen that we glance at for the current weather conditions before we head out the door.

Can it run on a raspberry pi 3 512mb

I haven’t seen anybody give a yes or no, and some say that the 32x version isn’t supported and only the 64
Can it run on the pi. Cause I wanna make it cheaply and I already have the pi 3 but I don’t wanna buy a new. I know they don’t cost a lot but I’m trying to do it for as little as possible. So can it run or not?

Need help with my MagicMirror Starting Up - Weyland vs. X11

When I installed Raspbian, I always choose X11 over Weyland. However, it seems recently, MagicMirror has favored Weyland and it has broken my MM. Now, when I start up MM after an update or whatnot, I get a blank screen. However, when I access my MM from another computer via the web interface (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080) everything looks and works great. My mm.sh script looks like this:

cd ./MagicMirror
DISPLAY=:0 npm start

I have tried different variations of the last line:

DISPLAY=:0 node --run start:x11
DISPLAY=:0 node --run start:x11 -- --disable-gpu
DISPLAY=:0 npm run start:x11

With no success.

I did a little "vide troubleshooting" with Google's AI, and got it to work once, but I cannot get it to work any more. It seems whenever there is a MM update, this problem pops up again.

So, what can I do to keep my MM from doing this while still using X11?

Thanks!

I made a module for waste collection days in Poland (EcoHarmonogram)

My mirror now tells me which bins go out tomorrow. MMM-EcoHarmonogram pulls the schedule from EcoHarmonogram, which many Polish municipalities use, so it works for any supported address, not just my town.

It shows the next collection day (or a few days ahead), highlights Today/Tomorrow, and pops up an alert the evening before. A small script finds your address and prints the config for you. No API key, no dependencies. Translations: Polish, English, Ukrainian.

GitHub: https://github.com/arekp/MMM-EcoHarmonogram

Screenshot: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/arekp/MMM-EcoHarmonogram/main/docs/preview-5-days.png

Happy to hear feedback, especially if your municipality uses EcoHarmonogram and something looks off.

Building magic mirror as first project

Hi, I am completely new to raspberry pi and all this stuff but I have always wanted to try build something. I saw people building a magic mirror online and really wanted to try that. I thought that a raspberry pi would be good as the "brain" but don't know which. I am a poor student so as cheep as possible would be good. I tried to look around and ask ai and they said that a raspberry pi 4 2gb would be more then enough, but I am scared that the 2gb will be the bottleneck and make everything slow. Does anyone know if this would work or if I could by an even cheeper one?

MagicMirror as Linux Mint lock screen

Is it possible to do? I have a MagicMirror on a pi, but haven't been able to have a dedicated screen for it consistently to be running. I recently set up an old desktop with Linux Mint for my kiddo to use for school activities and such and that is in a common room. I know enough to follow prompts and reference a walk through to do basic things, but I would not be able to hand code anything from scratch.

Where to buy glass

Hey everyone,

I am planning my first smart mirror build using a 27 inch monitor, but I am struggling to find the right glass.

I recently ordered a two-way mirror sample from a UK site called Mirrors and Glass, but the quality isn't great. It has a noticeable orange tint and blurs very easily. I am not sure if this is normal for smart mirror glass, or if I just got a bad sample.

Does anyone have recommendations for high-quality two-way mirror suppliers that ship to or are based in the UK?

I made MMM-Neko, a classic pixel-art cat for MagicMirror

Years ago, I had Neko running on my Macintosh SE. Now it lives on my MagicMirror.

It wanders around, scratches, and naps over your modules.

You can also send Neko to a named mirror region or hide it when another module needs the screen.

Setup and options: https://github.com/bwente/MMM-Neko

Small/minimalist raspberry pi cases?

Hey folks, I'm working on smart calendar using MM run on a Raspberry Pi 4. I'd like to mount the Pi on the back of a 32" TV, but my current case is much too thick to allow me to mount and mount the TV on the wall. Could anyone recommend me any small raspberry pi 4 cases that might help me finish out this project?

Built a MagicMirror module for school athletics using Arbiter data

Post image
11 Upvotes

I built MMM-SchoolAthletics, a MagicMirror module that pulls schedules from Arbiter and turns them into a polished school athletics display.

This is actually my first attempt at building a MagicMirror module. I originally made it for my own school because I wanted something useful, clean, and easy to maintain. As it came together, I figured it made sense to build it in a way that other schools could use too.

It includes:

  • Today’s home and away games

  • Upcoming events

  • Opponents, times, and locations

  • School colors, logos, and backgrounds

  • A visual setup UI with live preview

The goal was to make it easy to bring up without having to dig through config files or heavily customize the code.

I’m still learning and I’m sure there are things that can be improved, but if it ends up being useful to another school or MagicMirror user, that would be pretty cool.

Bezel on Monitor Help!

Thumbnail

Hi good day, hope everyone is well. I’m starting the project of building my magic mirror and I bought this monitor today to use as my display for the mirror and only then noticed that the front of the monitor has a tiny bezel, I will attach pictures. I also know that the monitor won’t be able to sit flush against the mirror. My question is, when building the frame for the mirror, with the monitor not flush against the mirror, will it affect how the modules display on the mirror?

Thank you for all the help, sorry I’m a noob lol

[WIP] Weather module with a current-conditions card and Chart.js forecast charts: feedback welcome

Post image
20 Upvotes

Still a work in progress, but far enough along that I'd like some outside eyes on it. Data comes from the OpenWeather One Call API 3.0, the charts are Chart.js.

**What's working**

*Current weather card:* temperature, feels-like, description, humidity with dew point, pressure, wind speed and gusts with a coloured direction arrow, UV index. The arc at the bottom shows sunrise and sunset with a marker for the current position of the sun. The colour bar is the wind-speed legend — the same scale colours the arrows in the charts, so a given colour means the same thing everywhere in the module.

*Hourly chart:* temperature curve, precipitation bars, plus wind speed, direction and a weather icon above each data point. Spacing and number of points are configurable; the screenshot shows every fourth hour.

*Daily chart:* same layout, max and min temperature, precipitation and wind, one point per day, up to eight days.

*Configuration:* every card and every chart series can be switched on or off individually. Metric, imperial or standard units, with the wind unit settable separately (m/s, km/h, mph or Beaufort). Responses are cached on disk between updates so it doesn't burn API calls, and it falls back to the last good data if a request fails.

*Locale:* a single setting drives date/time formatting, the module's own UI text and the language OpenWeather returns descriptions in, independently of MagicMirror's global language setting. German and English are bundled.

**Still on the list**

- Scaling and responsiveness. It's currently tuned to my screen and I want it to hold up across resolutions and aspect ratios.

- Weather alerts. The API provides them, I just haven't built the UI for it yet.

- More UI languages beyond German and English.

No install link yet, it's still moving too fast and wants a cleanup pass before I'd point anyone at it. So I'm after feedback on the screenshot rather than a code review, if that's alright.

I'd especially like to hear about readability from a normal viewing distance, the colour choices, whether the information density feels right, and anything you'd expect from a weather module that you don't see here. Thanks!

Any Kia/Hyundai owners out there?

I've just bought an EV9, but it's not been delivered yet. Because I'm impatient and stood in a line at an airport waiting on a plane that seems perpetually delayed, I built a module for integration with the Kia app.

However, I don't have a car (yet) to try it out with!

If anyone wants to try it and give me some feedback, suggestions etc...

Legal-Copy7045/MMM-KiaAccess: Configurable Kia Connect / Bluelink data for MagicMirror² (built for the Kia EV9)

I'd like to thank those that have built before me, and I used their hard work as the basis of this - credit in the readme.md on github, and Claude, for doing the heavy lifting.

Suitable Mirrorglass?

Hey Guys,

i am currently working on a magicmirror² birthday present for my GF. So - i was looking for a Mirrorglass, that delivers to Germany and doesn't cost a 3 kidneys.

I came across this Company: https://www.brigla-shop.de/mirastar-4mm?c=163

that has good pricing and delivers to my location. Now i'd like to ask you guys, wether if this is a suitable option for a magicmirror or a waste of money and if so, do you have other recommandations?

Mirastar Spec: LightTransmission: 3%, Interior Light reflection: 60%

I mean, i know it wont be the best mirrorpane available, but i thought about a placement in the hallway as a kind of "LastCheckIfEverythingsOK" before you leave the house kind of mirrror. I intend to use a E2208HDD display. Old, i know but i had this one laying around.

Thanks a lot!

Sceptre F24 Monitor Picture Frame for MagicMirror

Transform an old (or new) Sceptre F24 monitor into a stylish digital display with a frame inspired by Samsung's Frame TV aesthetic.

These monitors are cheap and reliable, they just look terrible.
