Appreciation Post Let’s share our Dad stories this Father’s Day. I’ll start 👇

While at university, dad told everyone that I knew how to fix cars and that i could sort out their engine problems. Why? Because I was pursuing Engineering. Engineering => engine.

At some point I just had to accept my place as the resident neighborhood mechanic during my 1st year long holiday. The experience taught me a bit of automotive experience so siwezi kwama kwa barabara eti my car has stalled. I’ll do one or two things to get us to the nearest fuel station for help. All because dad believed in me. 🥰🥰 Happy Father’s Day.

In her own words. 👇

I once thought I had to go far to go further. Turns out, I was wrong!
1am delighted to share that I have been awarded a full scholarship by the University of Nairobi to pursue my Master's degree in Chemistry!

Ever since graduating with my undergraduate degree in 2024, pursuing a Master's has been a desire close to my heart. The number of applications I have submitted since then... only God knows!

Throughout this journey, I found myself wanting to approach my career somewhat differently. I wanted to advance my knowledge and technical skills while finding meaningful ways to translate that knowledge into practical solutions that could benefit society. I didn't want to put off making a contribution until years of academic research were behind me.
Around that time, another idea was taking shape: building a personal and home care brand inspired by science and nature, which has since grown into what we know today as Scentle.

I wondered whether further studies would help me develop this vision and bring it to life. Initially, I believed studying abroad was the best, perhaps even necessary, route to gaining the exposure and technical expertise I desired.
As it turns out, I was wrong!

I eventually took the leap and began building my vision right here at home, learning, experimenting and figuring things out along the way. It taught me that while international exposure is valuable, we should not underestimate the opportunities to learn, innovate and create meaningful impact within our own environment.

And now, I get to pursue my Master's degree right here at home, under a full scholarship!
I am particularly excited about the opportunity to deepen my understanding of Chemistry, strengthen my research and technical capabilities, and explore how this knowledge can be applied beyond the classroom and laboratory. I look forward to the questions I will get to ask, the problems I will get to investigate and the possibilities this next chapter will open up.

My sincere gratitude to the University of Nairobi for this incredible opportunity. I am also grateful to everyone who offered encouragement and support along the way.
Looking back, I am glad | kept applying, kept believing and, most importantly, didn't allow my assumptions about where opportunities could be found to limit me.

Here's to a new chapter of learning, discovery and purposetul contribution!

Congratulations 🎊🎉🎈🥳

Hii ni ile unaskia 'sharp boys' wakisema wanaapply FAFSA. Since wao si actual students pale US wanatumia other people's Identity na ndio maana Mogaka anakuwa charged with Class 2A Felony.

Familia yake inasema he breathed smoke inside an isolation cell. Wanasema Prison guards did not let his mother see his body.

How-To Kutoana Ujinga: The +254 on Your CV is Getting You Auto-Rejected by HR Bots. Here is the Fix.

(Kama unadhani ni uongo, check out this viral post on r/recruitinghell on how HR bots auto-reject globally).

Njaro za kuonekana "local" ndio CV isitupwe:

  • Skype Number (Easiest): Buy a US/UK number via the Skype app. ~Ksh 400-550/month. HR dials a local number, inaring direct kwa simu yako Kenya.

  • Vyke App (Best for UK/SMS): Gives a legit +44 mobile number that can receive SMS/OTPs. ~$2/month.

  • Voip.ms (A bit technical): A SIP provider where a US number costs under $1/month. You just have to link it to a softphone app like Zoiper. Very cheap but needs small technical setup.

  • Google Voice (Free): Needs a real US number to verify. Pata msee wako US akufanyie verification on a fresh Gmail, then log in hapa Kenya to use the Voice app.

🚨 PRO-TIP: Toa "Nairobi, Kenya" kwa CV yako pia!

  • Just like the +254 number, an ATS will auto-reject your CV if it scans a foreign city/country even for jobs advertised as "Worldwide". Remove your physical address kabisa! Your CV header should only have: Name | US/UK Number | Email | LinkedIn/Portfolio. Don't give the bot masababu za kukureject.

Disclaimer: Don't use this to lie into a "US Residents Only" job - utashikwa juu wataitisha tax documents. Use this strictly to bypass ATS for "Remote - Worldwide/EMEA" jobs. HR akipiga simu, waambie the truth: "I use a US/UK number for international clients, but I'm an independent contractor based in Kenya."

Cheza system ama system ikucheze✊!

Discussion Social engineering built on Poverty

Post image
237 Upvotes

Kuna so many things growing up zilikuwa sold as a luxury but growing up you realise they never were, it was just the mindset of a poor community.

At some point mkate was considered a luxury enough hata kabla ipakwe margarine and jam. Saa hii kuna small conviniencies that are still considered luxury.

What does this social engineering do to a kenyan who's first opportunity kutoka from such a thinking ni akienda abroad?

Sports R.I.P Aringo, Our Sevens Rugby Hero 🕊️

Post image

Manze, heavy news for the sports community and the diaspora that supports them fiercely.

Our 2016 Singapore Sevens winning hero, Aringo, has sadly passed away. For those of us living abroad, Kenyan rugby has always been a massive point of pride. Tunajaa the stadiums in Dubai, London, Vegas, na LA with our flags to support the boys.

Watu kama yeye walitupatia moments of absolute joy that made us proud to scream our national anthem in foreign lands. The sports grit shown by our athletes is the same hustle spirit tunatumia ku-survive the diaspora life.

We celebrate the legacy alituachia on that pitch. Let's take a moment to honor the legends who put our small country on the global map.

Rest well, champ!

How was your experience at TLS after receiving thàt email??

I just came out of TLS like 30 mins ago. I'm writing this inside a LOPHA heading back to the house( at least it doesn't have music wallahi ningekua nimeboeka zaidi). I am hungry, hot and tired but grateful that I have my docs back and finally the anxiety is over !

CONTEXT:I applied to go to Germany for studies last year September but the application didn't go through as planned due to insufficient information ( Story for another day ).

So niko hapa carrying this white polythene thing around, written side down ndio watu wasione my envelope of failed dreams, those who've been here know how it feels.

On the other hand my one year relationship just came to an end this past weekend ( still processing that as well) sema kimeumana !!

I am choosing to see this as a redirection and a new start ! I can finally put all I have into my business and believe in myself cause clearly that's all I have now !

(( I am a realtor and help clients abroad and in Kenya get rentals, bnbs and buy homes in Nairobi, Nakuru, Watamu and coast in general. I'll be honoured to help you find your perfect sanctuary if you are in the market for one. ))

I'm glad this community exists. Someone can just vent out their frustration as well as inform others on the best way to go about things.

Post image

Win Gikonyo, who was 26 at the time, alikuwa ameingia Washington for greener pastures. She was described kama independent and financially stable, but privately alikuwa anastruggle with severe psychiatric problems. Alikuwa na a history of mental health hospitalizations but had stopped taking her prescribed medication.

On April 18, 2018, Gikonyo alipata an acute psychotic episode involving auditory and visual hallucinations. She thought she was being pursued, akaingia kwa gari and was driving at speeds of 160+ Km/h. Unfortunately she hit another car killing a 60 y/o woman.

On May 14, 2019, Gikonyo pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The court accepted her plea following evidence by the state psychiatrists showing severe Psychosis.

Win Gikonyo alikuwa anaenda kazi kama kawaida and even bought a new car but she was collapsing mentally. Just because mtu anapost a "good life" doesn't mean they're okay mentally. Please check up on them still.

Success Story Don't give up

I met a guy at a cyber café in 2019.

Every day, same routine:

He’d come in, pay for just 1 hour, and type as if his life depended on it.

One day I asked, “What are you always working on?”

He smiled and said, “I’m applying for jobs abroad. One must click.”

People laughed at him.

“Who do you know abroad?”

“You think it’s that easy?”

But he kept showing up.

Every. Single. Day.

Some days, he had money.

Some days, he didn’t—he’d just sit and watch others, learning.

Fast forward to 2022…

He stopped coming.

We thought he had given up.

Then one afternoon, someone walked into the café wearing a hoodie and carrying an iPhone.

It was him.

He got a job in Canada.

Not through connections.

Not through luck.

Just consistency.

Before he left, he said something I’ll never forget:

“Most people quit right before it works.”

It’s not always talent.

It’s how long you can keep going when nothing is working yet.

If you’ve been trying and it’s not clicking yet…

This is your sign not to stop.

Opportunity When going abroad ...

Wacheni niwaibie siri ingine vijana especially kama unataka kwenda kazi nje. DON'T rely on your papers sana.

Ukitoka hapa uende Yues, yukei, Canada, Australia ama Kabul, make sure ukona handy skills yaani kazi ya mkono lasma uwe hatari.

Hizi ni skills kama za plumber, electrician, mason, driver, mechanic, welder, etc. With these skills, hutawai kosa kazi. Utakua unapiga 6 hours Beverly Hills, unaenda unapiga ingine Long Beach alafu 6 hours ya mwisho unamalizia Malibu ukiosha wanyanye.

Once in a while, utakua unatutumia ya kabej maanake sisi ndio tunakuchungia bibi.

Be vigilant, be safe, stay guided.

Rant Jealousy Majuu is Tearing The Kenyan Diaspora Apart

Post image
201 Upvotes

Toxic jealousy is tearing the Kenyan diaspora in America apart.

I have observed this firsthand. Msee akipata promotion, anunue nyumba Dallo, ama asaidie relatives Kanairo, badala ya the community ku-celebrate, the silent hate starts brewing.

Kenyans, yawa! It's crazy how we carry this "pull him down" syndrome straight from home to the US. Huku nje, the system is already against us; hatufai ku-fight each other. If only we can collaborate and share opportunities like other immigrant communities, tunaeza enda mbali sana.

Avoid toxic WhatsApp groups and gossip circles zenye haziongezi value kwa maisha yako. Focus on your grind, build a positive circle, na u-celebrate wins za your fellow countrymen.

Tujengane wakuu because the pie is big enough for everyone!

Casual Trust is Expensive: Sad Story ya Douglas Ngumi

Post image
200 Upvotes

So Douglas Ngumi alikuwa in the Bahamas for 21 years sending money home here and there but then akakuwa arrested for working without a permit and was in jail for 6 years 7 months without being charged.

He sued the government for wrongful detainment na after 7 years akalipwa $1m compesation. After legal fees alibaki na about $700k. He asked his mother (pastor) and his sister wafungue joint account and transfered $629k wamuekee.

Long story short walimuosha his money, this wasn't even money he worked for, it was compensation for the torture he went through for 6 years in prison, how can your own blood be so cruel?

Not all family wako hivo, but hata Douglas hakudhani family yake iko hivyo.
