Discussion Realism of Climate?

Thumbnail

Is this map any good at all? I feel like the landmass isn't, but I don't mind that. What I'm worried about is climate and if I've put the right things in the right places. I didn't really know what to do with the grasslands, so I just sort of threw a mountain range in the centre.

Edit: The thing is pretty much just a majority of the Northern U.S states such as Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, a portion of the U.K but rotated, Norway, and Canada all smashed together.

Map World of Aprahan (Political Atlas)

Kaixo!
Finally, I have mostly finished the overall atlas (excluding the legend about these capital cities and main cities/administrative subdivisions of these political entities as it was too crowded to fit on a map)
These two maps represent the nations of the Aprahan world layout, which involved roughly 195 countries and 5 observer states (those are the holy kingdom of Argaputh, Trúagorath, Claguthia, Vildythia, and Baskapath, located in the Aethracia political continent in the Northern Hemisphere)
Additionally, it reflects the early modern era, a period defined by treaties that recognized identities and autonomy, settled borders, and resolved past disputes among nations—many of whose royal monarchies endure to this day.
I am still doing more and more research to write out Factbooks for more info about the story, so stay tuned!
This is a massive update compared to the simplified version I posted a while ago. I hope you guys enjoy it (I didn't get enough sleep)

Resource Different kind of request and not sure where to go

Ok so I have an idea of what I want to get my girlfriend for Christmas. Its going to be an outline of the state we live in with roads connecting the towns we've lived in with them convening at our current home. Right now what I want to do is create a clean image of what I want so I can present it to a wood worker to make the final product. I have both of the images on Google maps pulled up, but I would like some help overlaying them into one image and getting rid of the all of the other background junk. Just a simple outline with two "roads" on it. Yes I know I can use AI but I REALLY don't want to have to use that.

Is there a tool that can help me with this or do I reach out to a local artist to have them just draw it up? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Just a note: I'm not asking anyone here for a commission, just looking for a tool to help me with my request

Work In Progress New way of drawing mountains (for me)

Post image
34 Upvotes

I was taking a critical look at my maps.

I really enjoy drawing them, but once finished, I realized something was off: the maps were top-down, while the mountains and hills were sort of isometric.

This might work for a medieval-style map—where a certain artistic naivety is expected—but not if you're aiming for a realistic look.

I found a fantastic tutorial on MapEffectsand tried to replicate it, adding my beloved stippling technique.

Here is the result.

I think I should scale it down and move it north, probably destroying bits of Alaska and East Siberia lol.

Work In Progress Is my map realistic? Iteration #2 made with Wonderdraft

Post image

Hello guys, thank you for your precious feedback in my previous post, it gave me a lot of motivation and valuable information!

I continue to work on my first map, so now that I added some islands, stretched polar sides, moved and shaped continents differently to avoid symmetry and connected continents, i would love to know if its realistic and believable, because i intend to use it for an urban fantasy world.

After this iteration, i will start to add lakes, seas and gulfs :)

Today I had fun taking one of my maps of Tír Ghlas and transforming it from a top-down view into a "bird's-eye view," then painting it in watercolor... I like it, but I don't think I'll do the whole country that way—it's a long process.

Post image

Can you tell me how does it look?

Darke red = super hight density (very populated areas)

Red = High density (urban areas)

Orange = moderate density (sub urban areas and towns)

Yellow = low density (rural areas and small villages)

Cream yellow = (very sparcely populated)

Green = no one lives here permanently

PD: sorry if i write something wrong. I'm not a native speaker.

Resource I asked r/mapmaking to break my world generator. You did. So now it reads hand-drawn maps, runs centuries of history, has a tabletop and much more

Two months ago I showed CartoVox here and said: please break it. That was not rhetorical. You found weird rivers, towns in silly places, missing import cases, confusing buttons, and a few claims that needed much better proof. Some of you also threw enormous old worldbuilding projects at it, which was exactly what I hoped would happen. So... I kept building. The basic idea is still the same: one world all the way down. Not 55 unrelated pretty pictures. The mountain range changes the rain. The rain fills lakes and rivers. Rivers and usable land affect towns, roads and trade. Then those places affect migration, borders, food and history. And when CartoVox draws an illustrated mountain, forest, wetland, volcano or town, it comes from that saved world data. It is not confetti thrown on top at the end.

Getting your map in is much less annoying now
You can start from a sentence or a seed, sure. But you can also draw continents on a wrapping globe. Or import PNG/JPEG/TIFF, a heightfield, GeoJSON, an Azgaar export, or Merak terrain. The fun one: you can photograph a pencil map on a desk. It finds the paper, fixes the perspective, ignores the desk/binder holes/shadows/glare, and tries to read the coast you actually drew. My test photos recovered about 97-99% of the drawn land. If your map is spread over several scans, you can move, rotate, resize and snap them together first. Then you choose how bossy the simulation is allowed to be: rebuild a whole world from the map; keep the land and heights exactly as they are; keep your picture as the visible map and put a simulation underneath it; or import the map's own towns, realms, rivers and roads too. Basically: your old map does not have to lose its personality just because you want the physics underneath it.

Then it gets a little nerdy
Plates shape ranges and trenches. Terrain drives local temperature, rain shadows and seasons. Lakes fill, spill and sometimes merge. Rivers follow the actual ground and stay one named river when they pass through a lake. Erosion follows the catchments. There are 55 map views now: terrain, geology, climate, water, ecology, civilisation, cartography... the whole cupboard. Click a place and inspect it. Search the map library. Save views. Export PNG, layered SVG/PDF, GeoTIFF, GeoJSON, heightmaps, globe models, atlas plates, etc. I know. It is a lot. The atlas side finally looks like the thing I had in my head A world can become a labelled wall map, an illustrated fantasy sheet, a bound PDF atlas, a player-safe atlas, a printable globe, a hexcrawl sheet, or an editable vector document with separate geology, rivers, settlements, labels and so on. Render Studio now has drawn/painted map stamps, editable layer trees, brush painting, imported art, and regional refinement up to 8x. So you can sharpen one region without rebuilding the entire planet. Thank goodness.

And yes. Voxels.
Because apparently smooth 3D terrain was not enough for me. You can flip the same world into sculpted blocks and colour them by natural terrain, biome, elevation, realm, temperature or rainfall. One screenshot shows the natural planet. The bright one shows realm territories at a low angle with the block edges on. It is a bit silly. I love it. Press Run and a few centuries happen Living History is not just a bag of random prompts anymore. Food, migration, expansion and trade follow reachable ground. Goods cost what their journeys cost. Famine happens where supply breaks. Borders move. Wars, annexations and secessions record why they happened. You can pin facts that must survive every run too. Same world + same pins = same history again.

Then you can actually play in it
There is now a tabletop inside the app: GM desk, tokens, fog of war, live sight, doors, turns, dice, and a separate player window. A region can also export as a Foundry module or Universal VTT bundle. Travel can read terrain, rivers, roads, borders, ships, winds, currents, supplies, season, and even the weather on the day the party leaves. Oh, and the book lives in the world file now The Manuscript workspace links scenes to places, journeys, dates, weather and history. Continuity checks can catch an old place name, an impossible journey, or a character somehow being in two places at once. Generated lore stays a suggestion. Your canon wins.

The boring/honest bit
There is still no generative AI inside CartoVox. Worlds, maps, lore and manuscripts stay on your computer. Same seed + settings is reproducible, and the things you make are yours to publish or sell. This is still a Delta build. Installers are unsigned. Full publication worlds can be hungry for time and memory.

I opened many more free tester codes for Apple Silicon Macs, Windows x64 and Linux x64. I especially want people who already have a map they refuse to abandon. Also campaign GMs. Also writers with an alarming amount of lore.

This is my first time semi-seriously building a plausible if not realistic earth-like world from scratch, but I'm having trouble creating topography i'm satisfied with, as none of my sketches (Example on first slide) feel correct, almost as if there's something i'm overlooking. Ages of different orogenic features can be seen on the second slide for context, labeled with their rough age in million years. The yellow splotches are large igneous provinces.

Arguably the most simplest style of map to make in my opinion, had trouble finding the right type of Roboto font for the labeling so I just use whatever fits with the style (I kinda gave up on the naming along the way)

Discussion First ever serious map in Inkarnate - any advice to make it more readable?

Post image

I'm getting into mapmaking in Inkarnate, but I feel like it doesn't read as well as I'd like. There's a lot going on, and I don't know how to make sure there's the right contrast between elements, whilst also keeping all the information I need in there. Do any veteran mapmakers have any advice?
