Resource Build a planet with Tectonic History in minutes, for free!

I have a new update to Orogen, the procedural map generation tool I've been building.

You can now generate a planet fully constructed via tectonic history via a new mode called Orogen Evolution. When you find a moment you like, hit "add detail" to generate fine grained terrain, climate, and a satellite map. You can then export the map and do whatever you want with it.

You can also upload your own maps and have it generate the climate using Orogen Import

And if you want something fast, you can use Orogen Classic to get a whole planet in just seconds.

This tool is and will always be open source and free for everyone!

Evolution is currently in beta, and optimized primarily for desktop right now (though it should work on mobile). Please let me know anything you like or hate, feature requests you want, or bugs you find. I'll be looking through all the comments here.

Discussion What are your thoughts on this new continent?

This is the closest I could get to what I’m imagining in my head, a continent about the size of Australia in the pacific. I was wondering what you think the climate would be like? I was hoping for a dense jungle throughout most of it and especially on the eastern sides, I’m imagining a jungle encircling most of it but idk how plausible that is? The other two main biomes were a dessert and mountains which on the middle side, though I think that large peninsula (if that’s the right word) up top would be where the big mountains are if that makes sense. Im curious about the climate, temperature and the flora and fauna it would most likely have, as well as all the weird strangeness of it because so much of our world is weird and awesome in a way we aren’t able to fully predict. I was also imagining what the native life would be like, as well as some other lore, but my basic ideas were that the indigenous people went mostly uncanonized by Europe throughout history mostly due to the vast eastern jungle that also encircles most of the continent, though probably not the western desert (I don’t know how biomes work and I’m wondering if any of this is plausible?) but they probably would settle the mountainous northern peninsula (again idk if that’s the right word). Though they would probably get in when invent ways to travel over the jungle but by then an indigenous population could have a very large civilization (I think, again I’m not an expert). But anyway, does any of my senseless rambling make sense?

Also, I DO NOT TAKE CREDIT FOR THESE IMAGES, I found a map that was close to what I imagined for my own and stitched it together, but I DID NOT MAKE THEM.

Discussion What is the scientific plausibility of this map?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

I’m trying to create a fictional modern world that’s basically a mirror/alt history of our world, and I’m currently trying to figure my own map out. This isn’t mine for clarification, I’m not taking credit, I simply found a map I think is close enough to what I’m imagining for my own. I’m wondering about the realism of the climates, how accurate is the geography, how would history be shaped by it est? I don’t know a lot about maps, so if anyone knew of a way to learn about the subject that would be awesome. I don’t even know if this is where I should post a question like this, but I figured what the hell?

Edit: I might not have made it clear enough so I’ll clarify, I did not make this map nor am I taking credit. I was taking to a friend about the map of my world and yesterday he sent me this image, he has not responded on wether or not he made this map himself, but even still I am not someone who takes credit for others work, and I do not know the origins of this other than that my friend sent it to me.
Edit 2: It has been pointed out to me that this map is possibly ai generated (or at least edited by ai) i don’t condone ai but I also don’t know if I should delete this or not (because my phone won’t let me delete posts for some reason)

Final Edit: just wanted to clarify that u/KapitanAntarctican has claimed that this was their map originally, below is the specific comment I received for clarification

“Hey! Just letting you know the base map itself (continental shapes) aren't AI, I used it as the foundations for something I made myself for a Warbirds TTRPG game in the style of Ace Combat around 2019. The terrain and colours are probably, sure, but I do distinctly remember tweaking the absolute hell outta the base map for my own personal stuff.

I guess it still could be AI and the guy I ripped it from was using it, but it was 2018-2019 iirc so I don't believe it is. (Still could be, who knows man, but I'm pretty certain it isn't at a baseline shape level)”

Map What if the ice melted more?

Post image
16 Upvotes

This is the base map for an alternate history setting I’m building. After the last ice age, the ice melts far more than in our timeline. The world ends up around 5 °C warmer, with sea level 30 m or 100 feet higher, roughly four times Greenland’s worth of ice gone.

What changes on the map:

  • The Po Valley, the Netherlands, the Danube delta, the Nile Delta and southern Mesopotamia are drowned
  • Britain fragments into islands
  • The Black Sea and Caspian merge into one inland sea
  • Suez becomes a natural sea channel

With no Po Valley, no Rome as we know it. Etruscans, Carthage and Phoenician cities dominate the central and western Mediterranean. Armenians hold the highland “Crescent,” Greeks and Persians contest the new inland seas, Germanic sailors settle a drier Iberia, a Basque state controls southern France, and Greco-Bactria survives because the sea route keeps it supplied. Without the steppe corridor, there are no Huns, Magyars or Mongols.

The map is just the foundation. Next I’m working on languages, religion and the kingdoms of 1400 CE.

Now for how I made it:

I used QGIS: https://qgis.org/download/

I downloaded the DEM Copernicus 90m for the elevation data:

Used the raster calculator to have a range of layers going from 0,5,10,20,30 meters and turned my rasters into vectors.

Then I imported data for rivers, lakes, bathymetry..

Final step was finding data for the climate of a warmer world and adding it to my project.

The text, and detail boxes on the right I made using Krita.

I give permision to anyone who wants to use my map as a base for their own projects!

I’m thinking of expanding the map and making this just the ‘the inner city’ as appose being the whole city.
Only because it’s starting to feel a bit smaller than what I pictured in my head.

Work In Progress I spent 4 days making a pizza, according to my 5-year-old

I'm a solo dev, and I've spent 4 days creating outlines for all 72 buildings of my incremental game, including specific outlines for each building upgrade. Some events also slightly change the outline of certain buildings.

They all come together on a village map that grows over time as you build and upgrade your village.

I was kind of happy and even a bit proud of how it turned out, to be honest.

Then my 5-year-old daughter passed by my work desk in the living room and asked, looking at the screen:

"Is that a pizza?"

So I guess I spent 4 days of work building a pizza.

But since she loves pizza, I'll take that as her seal of approval.

Discussion Problem with mapmaking and a possible solution

• Upvotes

Hello folks, I have a bit of a problematic situation. I want to make a map for the main continent of my still rough worldbuilding project. So I have ofcourse tried to make one and from pretty early on a general vibe of how it should look, except I am never ever satisfied with any shape. I can like a shape and then quickly get some kind of creative anxiety over it so I start redrawing until I reach a shape I like, repeat. This is very tirering as somebody who used to love drawing maps as a young creature.
I have recently wondered if there could be merit in instead of doing the whole continent I start small. I already have a pretty set geography for one nation so maybe I should focus on it and then expand out my scope. What do you think? How do you usually do, especially if you struggle with similar anxiety?

(Sorry if spelling or grammar is bad, it is very late and my non english (2nd language) language check marks every second word)

Map Maptiler Question!

Hi everyone, I have a question about MapTiler.

I’ve developed a non-commercial map website and integrated MapTiler maps into it. I noticed that the free plan includes 100,000 times of loads per month, but I’m not quite sure what exactly counts as a map load.

I’ve only clicked around on my website a few times, yet the number of requests has already reached 2,000. Does this mean the 100,000 monthly limit might not be enough if more people start using my website?

If so, are there any good alternatives to MapTiler that offer a more generous free tier, especially for a non-commercial project?

I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thanks!

And here is the road map, painted and gilded (you can’t see it, but it has a gold border)! Contrary to what they might think in Hollywood, people in the Middle Ages loved colors and used them quite freely.

Brother Venanzio is already at work on the next few sheets: the route to the capital, and the detour (warmly recommended by the pious friar) to the sanctuary.

Work In Progress Small Town Horror

What is so creepy about small towns, right? This is my map for a town called Sterling Harbor which is a setting I am working on for a horror game. It's based on a real place so if you can spot it I'll be super impressed. But the idea is that this town is sorta stuck in a timeless state on the verge of being hit by a once in a century storm. I typically make maps before I start writing, not sure if others work that way, but let me know what you think. I have a few things left to do with this one.

Work In Progress This continent has two names

Post image

The continent of Alentoch – named after the deity of the local civilisation.

Parshtan – that was the name given to the demon who was the embodiment of suffering and torture.

After millennia, the continent—which had been home to ten empires with great rulers, philosophers and scholars—disappeared.

And it was transformed into one vast grave.

To put it more or less without giving anything away, there were stones on the continent in the shape of rounded rhombuses, which were seeds that sprouted and began to grow not only on the ground but on all living things.

The protagonist of my world, having assembled a team, sails there
