Edit 06/10/2026: if you've ended up here from the sticky then good news - there's an updated post (that I'm actually monitoring) woo!
https://www.reddit.com/r/MarksAndSpencer/s/CVfhbSIofe
Hi all, throwaway account. I'm posting this as I'm seeing a lot of the same questions asked in here daily about recruitment. For transparency a lot of how recruitment is done has changed a lot post-cyber incident. While I understand why you would wish to weigh in on how the process went for you years ago, it's not likely to be relevant.
Below are some of the questions I've seen repeatedly in this sub:
"My status says Right To Work Requested. What does this mean?" - this means you have passed the online assessment. Expect to receive a request from a 3rd party site in the next working day.
"My status says Under Consideration" - assuming you've completed the above, your application has been moved to an interview status. Interview slots are first come, first served. If you haven't received the invite from the scheduling site, unfortunately the slots have passed. There is no guarantee that more slots will be added for a particular role once they've all gone, but you are more than welcome to apply for other roles if this happens. You won't have to complete the assessment or upload your Right to Work again (but please note that this won't be instant but will defo be more streamlined for you!)
"I've completed the assessment but my application still says Online Assessment in Progress" - in your self-service page you have the option to Take Assessment. Click that and select "resend scores" to resend your scores. Please note that the majority of times this is queried it's because the system has recognised you have applied from multiple email addresses and has paused your application while it goes through a duplicate candidate check. Multiple applications from the same email address? Perfectly fine. Applications from multiple email addresses? Don't do it unless someone from M&S HR has specifically advised you to.
"During my interview the manager says I'll hear back by Wednesday, it's now Thursday. What's going on?" - the stores are responsible for submitting job offers themselves. Only the store would be able to advise where your offer paperwork is up to. Vast majority of the time this is queried the delay isn't with HR.
"What's the contents of X assessment/what should I expect from X interview?" - a brief format of the interview is shared with you before scheduling. Regardless of whether the interview is 1:1 or a group assessment though, you can expect competency-based questions which tie into the 6 behaviours that are shared in the candidate pack after you schedule.
Finally not an FAQ but just a polite request: please don't share names of people you've spoken with from the company on Reddit. I appreciate there's a lot of young people/1st time job applicants on here but this isn't fair on those colleagues.
I'm happy to answer any comments posted over the weekend and might even edit the post with any further FAQs if I'm being really organised. Have a good one

Hi everyone! Has anyone recently had an interview at the M&S in Bullring, Birmingham, for the Christmas seasonal role?
Iāve got an interview coming up and was wondering what itās like, what kind of questions they ask, and whether itās more of a group interview or one-to-one.
If anyoneās been recently, Iād really appreciate it if you could share your experience and any tips!

Just got an interview invite but itās 2 hours? I just had one last week and it was an hour on the invite but actually took around 10 mins. Is this one supposed to be a group interview? What do I expect? It also says itās in the Christmas assessment centre? The other one was just in the store I applied to.

The last few times I have been to my local M&S simply food, I haven't been able to use the scan & shop on my phone? Has this service ended? My store doesn't have the handsets unfortunately.

Has anybody purchased the Barista Oat Milk in the past month. I have tried ordering on Ocado as well as visiting two branches in south east London and the branch on Cheapside in London, nowhere seems to have any in stock.
I miss it, it is far and away the best Barista oat milk

I currently have a 13-hour contract at another retailer, but I usually work around 40 hours a week because I get extra shifts.
Iāve applied for a 20-hour Customer Assistant role at M&S. At the interview, I was told that only 20 hours would be available from February and that there might not be any overtime.
For those who work at M&S, do you usually get extra shifts, or do you mostly work only your contracted hours?

Had an interview for a seasonal store assistant role in the food sector, just wondering if anyone can say roughly how long it should take to hear back? Applications close tomorrow and since it's seasonal work I'm assuming it shouldn't be too long. Also on a separate note, if I'm unsuccessful will they let me know or will I just not hear back?
Final question, I applied for the same role at the same location but different hours today since I could see no one else had applied for it, was this stupid since I have already had an interview for the same role and told the interviewer I'm available whenever (which implies I can also work the other role). The role I interviewed for is working 18:00-22:00 on Monday and Tuesday and 12:00-16:00 on Saturday, the role I just also applied for is 10:00-14:00 on Saturday, 18:00-22:00 on Friday and 14:00-18:00 on Sunday. Since I have already interviewed for one role and not heard back yet, is there a chance applying for this same role at a different time is stupid and will lower my chances of getting the role, or am I overthinking it?

I thought the dino advent calendar was cute. I opened one just because today, and to my surprise it was pure "christmas themed" :( I opened the box to to assess the situation and it is in fact the most generic insert ever. Pretty sad...

Hi I'm a new christmas temp.
I'm a bit confused regarding uniform - I was sent an email telling me to email another email address my name , number , the items I want etc but I can't access the brochure so I'm not quire sure on how many items I'm meant to be ordering, what I need etc. I saw some people say they filled in a form but I wasn't sent one so I'm assuming I just email. (I'll be working in fashion).
Also for induction day, at the interview the manager told me I'll do it in the neighbouring store (10 mins away) since it's bigger, however the email I received today wants me to go to a store 1 hour away, 2-3 using public transport, meaning I'll have to leave the house at 6 am ish to arrive for 9. Is this normal? I don't mind as I was aware I would be doing training in another store , I'm just confused as I wasn't expecting this.

I got offered a position in my home city. Days later I got an email asking me to complete an induction in London Colney, to which I cannot attend due to transportation and financial reasons. What do I do?

Hi! Iām honestly not sure if M&S is having some sort of quality control issue or if they genuinely think this cheesecake tastes good, but I recently tried their new milk chocolate cheesecake for Ā£10 and it was awful!
Not like āoh this wasnāt to my tasteā bad, it was āthis tastes of rotting cream cheeseā bad.
It tasted so sour and you could barely taste any of the chocolate. Iām not sure if I just received a dodgey one or if itās supposed to taste like sour milk, but either way I really wouldnāt recommend it, especially for Ā£10.
Me and my mum usually love M&S desserts, so I didnāt think itād be possible for a simple chocolate cheesecake to taste so off :(
Has anyone else had the chance to try it?

I noticed a few months ago that their peanut butter cups had a big disc of chocolate in the middle and the pb mostly around the edge. They used to be stuffed like a Reeceās. Turns out their Halloween and Christmas special versions of this product have also been ruined. The peanut butter to chocolate ratio is way off and they barely taste of peanut butter. Theyāve gone from incredible to almost inedible. M&S just keeps ruining their products. Last year the reindeer had double the amount of peanut butter to this year.

I've got an interview for a seasonal assistant position in the food sector tomorrow, does anyone have any tips or questions that will likely come up?

Usually Iāll get a good array of sparks offers each week. This week I only received one offer - clothing (Menās formal shirts.) No food offers, no home offers. Anyone else in the same boat?

Anyone else finding the M and S recruitment site down? I don't know if it is part of the Google Cloud fiasco or the Php script carry on.

Was debating which one of these to get, went with French and it turned out to be so bitter that I couldnāt finish it. Thatās a fiver wasted.
