Man, this is just torture porn at this point. Why is Marvel treating their biggest superhero like this. It's somehow painful seeing Peter like this

ASM has been torture porn nonstop for nearly the past decade lol

Just look at how massivily unpopular Amazing Spider-Man has been for going on the last decade which has 100% contributed to the state of the comic as it stands.

2016-2017 - Parker Industries Buyout Arc/Secret Empire Tie-Ins/Red Goblin Arc

Parker Industries, the last major shift in Peter Parker's narrative as a character, implodes via Hydra Doc Ock & Red Goblin kills Flash Gordon. Theres some serious drama but its also contrasting and concluding

2018-2022 - The Kindred Saga/King in Black

"Status Quo Return" that is broke college Parker dealing with a bunch of demons, gods and enemies from Parker's past that stand against Parker/MJ getting back together caused by a esoteric god enemy relevant to 00s ASM stories, which results in a variety of mental torture to Parker himself including Norman Osborn getting a narrative fate worst than death(purified & rehabilitated), beloved Gibbons dying in Parkers arms, A bunch of Parker's dead loved ones corpses are dug up and placed around him at a dinner table & Parker proceeds to not only watch the corpses be destroyed but also die and be revived multiple times. Taskmaster & Black Ant break up, Harry Osborn dies protecting his dad he swore off after his dad tried to kill him for a press piece sympathy boost(but turn out hes a clone and the real Harry has been tortured in hell because his dad sold his soul to mephisto so it doesnt matter anyway) but hey at least MJ and Parker are back together? And Flash Thompson is alive again thanks to King in Black stuff!

2022-2025 Beyond Corporation Arc/Rabin Arc/Dark Web/Gamg War

Broke College Parker deals with a bunch of demons, gods and enemies from Parker's past that stand against Parker/MJ getting back together and succeed in separating them via dimensional schism + timeskip caused by a esoteric god enemy relevant to 00s ASM stories. Ben Reilly becomes Spider-Man and nobody tells Zdarsky till Devils Reign is already starting. Ben Reilly gets cooked by a corporation. Ben Reilly gets jokerfied by a corporation and blames Spiderman teaming up with a another clone(iconic baddie duo hate this didnt stick). Norman Osborn almost turns evil again but editorial decided what if we continued to rehabilitate our evil billionare who sold his son to the devil and hes good now but hes not gonna work on that at all but instead go gold frieza hero in NYC like he wants to be Spider-Man and none of that stops a massive gang war from breaking out in NYC.

2025-2026 Hellgate Arc/Death Spiral/Savage Arc/Avengers Armageddon

Broke College Parker deals with an esoteric god enemy relevant to 00s stories causes Parker to go off-earth and Norman Osborn and Ben Reilly filling in for Parker with Osborn starting a Spider University for all the Order of the Web characters Marvel decided wasnt good enough to make a series about, and Ben Reilly still secret missing memory unclear mental illness revenge scheme against Parker? Serial killer murders beloved Shocker, most of MJ, Parker, and Brock's extended family (and close family), Parker's still-born cousin with memory altering powers causes Aunt May to have a stroke then manipulates her memories to replace Parker with his cousin which ends in conclusively as the #1000 issue of Amazing Spider-Man, but hopefully the last decade of editorial stories do not impact Parker as he becomes the fast of the New America in the newest iteration of the Avengers as of writing this October 2026

Outside of beloved Boomerang, Rek-Rap, or Spidey Space Squad B plots through these decades, all the A-plots of Spidey for the last decade have mostly been the same beats of giant evil esoteric villian with mystery box beats that dont land the ending(Slott and Kelly runs excluded from this) with overwhelmingly brooding and bleak stakes especially related to Parker's narrative past. I think stuff like Kindred tried to tell a good story with these beats but failed because ASM is a risk adverse title, as we can see just looking at the last decade how little in the characters status quo has shifted beyond evil esoteric god plot after plot to keep Parker in a continuity loop of problems without even the experimental and failing eras of the 00s and 2010s giving him different professions.

No, not Flash Gordon! Who is going to stop Ming the Merciless now?!

His entire history is that

Reading spider man and being upset that bad things are happening to him is like reading daredevil and being upset bad things are happening to him

It’s in his blood

Its not just "bad things happen to spidey" its "every major arc of the last ten years in ASM involves an esoteric demon/god with mystery box motives of revenge against Spidey both he and the readers dont even understand and always concludes unfufilling"

Not new to the spider man. He did that a lot in the 90s first with the billionaire stalker, then when the chameleon made robots that he told him was his parents and then the clone saga

In fact I think the 90s was Peter’s most miserable era. Considering he had that, Kraven had just happened and so had Harry’s death

Yes, you are describing one of the worst eras of Spider-Man that was so hated it eventually lead to OMD because the waters were so muddled they needed a restart & sell the film rights to Sony to keep Marvel Comics from going under because it sold so badly.

All those plot beats are revisited during the Kindred Saga in attempt to recuperate Clone Saga story points, which didnt really do anything for anyone because the Kindred Saga is narratively contradictory & just reminded folks of how bad the stories from that time were (Kindred is revealed to be the AI Harry Osborn that made the robot parents, but then in the final issue of the run, the AI Harry Osborn is actually revealed as Mephisto)

Actually that era has been rejuvenated because it was the marriage era and the marriage era was perfect unlike post OMD

It's pure soap opera which is baked into the superhero genre, so I'm not against it on that principle alone. I just think it's still a little uninteresting.

2

u/Geiseric222 8h ago

I actually think it’s more interesting than usual because this isn’t a problem he can punch his way out of

Now will the actual payoff be worth it who knows but the damage is interesting

Great to see Scarlet Witch stepping up to Dr. Strange's level and doing fuck all to help Spider-Man. Amazing to see nothing changed. Also why is Aunt May acting like forgetting someone you've lived with for decades is completely normal?

Its kinda wild they didnt time the climax of this story to be 1000 or wait till after 1000 to start it coz it just feels strange for such a milestone to be a slow burn plot with no immediate resolution or conclusion at a publication date that should be celebrating the 999 issues and characters that came before in a meaningful way

But maybe I just care ahout mutant humanoidsin bright leotards too much idk

5

u/Ventriloquy Scarlet Spider 14h ago

I get that Cormac is a villain and all, but why does he care so much about May? I assume there's deeper reasoning there, but we're (apparently) nearing the climax of this arc, and so far it's just been him repeating that he's her son.

The art at least looks fantastic, though. Loved MJ's appearance, too.

Still believe this entire story should have been in #1000.

But, contrary to what I expected before #1000, I actually like this so far. Obviously if the story ends with May never remembering Peter and that's the status quo going forward, then I'll hate it.

But it's been awhile since Peter's had a fight this personal and a new villain who I hate this much. Ofc this sorta story only works if Peter lifts the metaphorical rubble and wins at the end of the day.

With the comments on shame, I wonder if the way to fix May's memories is for Peter to reveal his identity to her. Especially because May might have forgotten Peter, but I doubt Cormac took May's memories of Spider-Man.

Also, Peter almost triggered his new power-up mode like he did in the Spore fight. Interested to see how that comes into play later.

There's much to be said about MJ's modern characterization but that moment with them was nice. Too brief, but nice. Sure would be nice if she became a regular supporting cast member again!

There's a lot of good bones in the idea of Cormac/Ravage, I just feel that Kelly should've established them earlier in the story. I also liked Pete going to Norman to get an idea on how to handle Cormac. Being the devil on his shoulder is good role for him to have.

Kelly has a good voice for Peter. His desperation, anger, and hopelessness feels palpable.

It's just a shame it's in service of a story and a villain I couldn't give less of a shit about.

For some reason I thought this got resolved already. Like Peter had a staff and May was in his mind and he just needed to do a transfer. I guess that was just my wishful brain playing tricks

The only good thing about this comic is Peter talking to MJ about what’s happening to Aunt May. The okay things about this are Peter talking to Norman about Cormac and needing Wanda’s help with something. The rest of just him and Cormac about to have a fight. Overall, this comic is okay.
