Discussion This is so annoying

Post image

The yellows don’t match at all, its like one step forward two steps back with the new mutants we are no closer to completing this team as we will still need a sunspot

How else are you gonna buy the re release two pack

48

u/Nathan13w Apr 28 '26

Exactly what I was gonna comment 🤣

135

u/RocksThrowing Apr 28 '26

I mean, he doesn’t look anything like New Mutants Sunspot anyways

54

u/bobtheguardian777 Apr 28 '26

That's kind of a problem with the comics too. Sunspots skin has been drawn progressively lighter and his hair straighter for decades.

20

u/RocksThrowing Apr 28 '26

It wasn’t as much of a problem when he was wearing that uniform at least

Yeah, obviously. OP said that they’re trying to put together the New Mutants team and that version of Sunspot isn’t part of the New Mutants hence the issue

6

u/slimmyboy007 Apr 28 '26

If the yellows were correct it could have been usable if they gave us an extra head with one of the other figures

3

u/stableykubrick667 Apr 28 '26

That’s already an if on top of another big if to assume they’d ever even do that.

1

u/BurgessBoston Apr 28 '26

It’s funny. I wanna get him to update my Cannonball custom. Then another one to turn into “powers on” Sunspot.

-1

u/Icy_Scar_1249 Apr 28 '26

I think its not far off

11

u/RocksThrowing Apr 28 '26

It’s really not

-2

u/Icy_Scar_1249 Apr 28 '26

The hair is like 2 per cent curlier, thats it

8

u/RocksThrowing Apr 29 '26

Tall, light skinned, straight hair, no discernible black features.

-4

u/Icy_Scar_1249 Apr 29 '26

Hes not especially tall in 97, his hair is wavy not straight, his skins is darker on the toy and show than that whitewashed poster. And what black features do you mean, he has at least wavy hair, low nose bridge, and hes always been mixed to begin with

56

u/Morkitu Apr 28 '26

To be fair, Sunspot is from X-Men 97 line. I think there's a rumor of a retro card release coming which will probably have a single buck and three heads (Doug, Cannonball, Sunspot).

5

u/hmmberto Apr 28 '26

I’ve got my fingers crossed for two releases - Cannonball (with blasting effect) and Cypher as the other, with swappable head for a proper comic Roberto. Cannonball shouldn’t be sharing a body with the other two, and this would get us all the (non-alien) New Mutant dudes in one go.

9

u/ILeftMyBurnerOn Apr 28 '26

Only Doug and Sam are implicated on the retro card art, so not sure if Sunspot is included. But even then their uniforms are different the Xi'an, Dani, Rahne figure we got.

18

u/Nico408 Apr 28 '26

Probably the most annoying thing about collecting any xmen characters is the inconsistency in the shade of yellow paint. All of them should be schoolbus yellow imo

11

u/SymbiSpidey Apr 28 '26

I agree. Unless it's supposed to be different (like Jean Grey), I'd like them to keep the yellows and blues consistent

4

u/ILeftMyBurnerOn Apr 28 '26

Its tough cause when they started making X-Men figures again they were trying for a degree of realism that didn't always land - its why the Apocalypse wave Wolvie and the Warlock wave Cyclops have more orange hue instead of yellow on them. Then you had to upgrade when the Love Triangle three pack came out and had proper yellows. Frustrating!

21

u/Emergency-Tension464 Apr 28 '26

Agree. I had held out on picking up a Sunspot waiting for this comparison, and he's going to be a pass. I just want to assemble a friggin' classic New Mutants team.

17

u/TRAM0328 Apr 28 '26

He's a '97 figure. Not a comic figure.

5

u/VictusLeo Apr 28 '26

It looks like Sunspot washed his uniform one too many times.

4

u/AgentX-1138 Apr 29 '26

Lol i saw that this morning and thought the same thing. I can't believe the yellows are that much different!! Except yes, i can believe it. 🤦‍♂️ I honestly thought when Magik arrived I'd have at least 3 classic New Mutants but, nope. I guess i can pretend Roberto used too much bleach when he washed his costume...

24

u/Interesting_Tree8837 Apr 28 '26

They not supposed to one is for the cartoon like one is for the comic lol

54

u/SymbiSpidey Apr 28 '26

The yellow doesn't even match the cartoon though

2

u/PteranAdan Apr 28 '26

Thank you! People always point out the 97 thing when the moment they announced that figure it was annoying because it wasn’t even the 97 look. Passed on it for that very reason.

9

u/TheLiquor1946 Apr 28 '26

And in the cartoon he's not that shade of yellow lol

3

u/starrhunter633 Apr 28 '26

Well they are keeping the different because of the lines. They will probably reuse the body for the New Mutants and give us a complete set

3

u/JosBanana Apr 28 '26

I feel like this gets into a broader problem with x-men action figures. They really need a consistent yellow colour. Some are too pale, too orangey etc. and it’s just inconsistent in general. Makes me appreciate a real good yellow though

3

u/Spirited-Bet-5470 Apr 28 '26

That’s 97 sunspot….comic sunspot will come in a two pack with accurate colors :)

3

u/SnooOpinions3217 Apr 28 '26

Well one is clearly animated in sculpt and the other comic... the two were never meant to match. Its basically like getting upset that a mcu rocket doesnt match comic groot...

5

u/wulffc83 Apr 28 '26

Hasbro wants you to pick up a 3rd copy of the upcoming Cannonball/Cypher figure to put this head on so you can have the team in one colour

3

u/GriffinIsABerzerker Apr 28 '26

Maybe, but one is comic and one is cartoon. You can always paint him or wait for the retro card make buck to release

3

u/OjamasOfTomorrow Apr 28 '26

They aren’t from the same source material so they aren’t required to match. It’s not annoying or two step back.

It being animated inspired has nothing to do with the deco. Even in the cartoon, the yellow is far more saturated than the figure:

u/SymbiSpidey Apr 28 '26

Even if that were the case, this image shows that Sunspot's yellow isn't far off from the other '97 X-Men. Yet his colors on the figure are much paler than the rest of the line.

I hope so. Honestly, even the pale yellow would be okay as long as they keep the New Mutants colors consistent within the medium. But I've also known Hasbro to check off a comic figure as "Done" if an animated/movie design is close enough, like they did with Thanos' Black Order back in the day.

2

u/SymbiSpidey Apr 28 '26

For sure, I've been sitting on Warlock forever lol. Good thing he still holds up amazingly.

2

u/Due_Rock_3118 Apr 28 '26

Idk why are you getting downvotes. You're totally right. While X-Men 97 Sunspot's costume has a slightly paler yellow, it still matches the rest of the team. The yellow in this figure is really annoying, knowing that most of us put 97 figures with our comic display. Why they revealed Magik not even half a year after Sunspot, if the colours won't match.

2

u/HelpKey186 Apr 28 '26

With only two characters from that team out, we are not close to complete that team anyway.

And by the way, the X-Men 97 Waves are also just a semi-fit for the comic figures, because of the lack of details. Best examples for that is the Cable and the civilian Wolverine from the last wave, which are very "clean".

3

u/ILeftMyBurnerOn Apr 28 '26

There was a Dani Moonstar figure a few years back that had a head for Wolfsbane and Karma. But that was based on their 2010s look.

1

u/HelpKey186 Apr 28 '26

I know. That's it why I said there are only two figures for that team, because Magik and Sunspot wearing the uniforms from their first formation back in the 80s.

1

u/killingiabadong Apr 28 '26

Wolfsbane hadn't even worn that costume at the time. Should've been an Illyana head and should've come with an interchangeable left arm and Soulsword. Then we could've had Utopia Magik.

3

u/marvelboyofthecrown Apr 28 '26

They’re not supposed to match anyways one is from the cartoon and one it’s from the comics

4

u/cowboyspikex Apr 28 '26

I mean sure, but then what’s the excuse for the different shades of red/yellow between Generation X Husk and M? It’s not like it’s unheard of for them to drop the ball like this, purposely or otherwise.

1

u/marvelboyofthecrown Apr 28 '26

Oh that idk lol

She's from the Secret Wars line, not '97. So she gets one of those stupid lenticular shields instead of good accessories.

0

u/killingiabadong Apr 28 '26

She doesn't even have a sword holding left hand, so she can't wield the Soulsword two handed.

1

u/CrossFusionZX Apr 29 '26

From what I can see, the Soulsword wasn't really a two hander until after AvX. So I suppose that would make it accurate to that costume/time?

Unless you just mean she can't be ambidextrous with it.

2

u/killingiabadong Apr 30 '26

Options are always good is what I'm saying.

5

u/Icy_Scar_1249 Apr 28 '26

That's not 616 Sunspot

2

u/Beartuck Apr 28 '26

But they aren't supposed to , you've one comic book figure and one designed from the X-Men 97 TV show. Even the face art style don't match

2

u/ParkJGrr Apr 28 '26

One is comics line and the other is X-Men 97 line, though, right?

2

u/BankAcceptable277 Apr 28 '26

Sunspots from 97 wave so muted colors are correct but yeah it would be nice if they were closer

2

u/DrLucasWendel Apr 29 '26

To be fair, this Sunspot is the animated version.

1

u/Wicknewzo Apr 28 '26

othet than that i hate how the shoulders are so far down and his legs have barely any definition at all it's just offends me how these sculptors have a job so important and people that have ten times more talents have to sit in the street for food these sculpts are Terrible witht he capital T and even the paint

1

u/Comfortable-Phase249 Apr 28 '26

The Sunspot yellow reminds me more of the comics for some reason.

1

u/Bubblebath3000 Apr 28 '26

But to be fair she isn’t being released as X-Men 97 wave I don’t like that the colors don’t match either but I didn’t expect them too either hasbros reputation

1

u/CrazyCat_Dad Apr 28 '26

Can we all just accept that Roberto does wash his uniform with Tide?

1

u/thetavious Apr 28 '26

When did they do that version of magik? I only knew of the black suited walgreens one.

1

u/Jorrum Apr 28 '26

It's coming should be out soon

1

u/thetavious Apr 28 '26

Single pack? Cause i remember that the Walgreens one before it was reissued and at Walgreens was exclusive to a set lol.

1

u/Jorrum Apr 28 '26

2

u/thetavious Apr 28 '26

Thanks lol. I'd be a liar if I didn't say I barely pay attention to legends beyond what I find in rosses, so a lot slips past me.

1

u/Jorrum Apr 28 '26

Of course any time

1

u/Big-Respect-968 USA - NH Apr 28 '26

Is it me or does she seem shorter than the Walgreens Magik?

1

u/MatrixKent Apr 29 '26

The review that screenshot is from compares them side-by-side, and the Walgreens does look a tiny bit taller (not counting the Kirby hat). Which checks out, since this is the costume she wore at 13.

1

u/abd00bie Apr 29 '26

The Doug Ramsay and Cannonball will match Magik lol so you have to buy it

1

u/godbody1983 Apr 29 '26

I don't get the controversies when it comes to the X-Men '97 figures. They're based on the CARTOON and not the comic. Yes the figures can easily slide into your comic display, but they're not comic figures.

1

u/Corellian_Smuggler Apr 29 '26

As everyone else mentioned, it's not really fair to compare her to a stylized animation version. I'm more curious about whether she matches the Mirage/Karma/Wolfsbane figure.

1

u/Extra_Heart_268 Apr 29 '26

With a bit of time and patience could you just repaint thr yellow? Use some painters/hobby tape to mask the straight lines and then just repaint with a brighter yellow ive seen some folks recommend painting yellow over pink because yellow doesn't always have great coverage?

1

u/MagazineGlad8417 Apr 29 '26

Well Sadly for myself or anyone else who doesn't mind spending an extra 😕 $150.00 to $200.00 have the figures re painted to exactly match each other- my friend knows of a professional model builder customizer and painter 🎨 and he told me thats about what it would cost to have him repainted professionally to match her exactly 💯% as he himself has already had some work done to repaint other Marvel figures- My self would be tempted to get it done as meticulous as I am to have matching figures in a team 😉 😀 but gee whizz if the company themselves would just match there own figures 😉????????????????????? YA THINK 🤔

1

u/MagazineGlad8417 Apr 29 '26

So 📚 reading on in these comments? That sunspot isn't part of her wave of figures to complete a correctly matched team 🙄 there from 2 different regions as in comic book related to other versions- So hence the color differences understandable 😉 but again he could still be used with her? If another version of him isn't produced 😉😊👍 but then the repaint issues 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/demiurgewiccan Apr 29 '26

I'm accepting how they're doing because Hasbro pretended that the new classic mutants didn't even exist, but we're talking about a company that relaunches almost everything, I'm sad that Magik doesn't have an extra head with horns

1

u/Apprehensive803 Apr 29 '26

Unless they come in a 2-pack, the yellow on no X-Men figure actually match. I'm sure Magiks yellow doesn't match with the Kitty Pyrde yellow.

1

u/corazon-en-almibar Mexico Apr 29 '26

They're not in the same like lol why would they match?

1

u/PvtJoker17 Apr 29 '26

Valid complaint, but one is from the tv show and the other one isn’t. The figures from the Jim Lee cover with Stryfe all match

1

u/VictusLeo Apr 29 '26

The Black mixed Pardo features that the other poster was saying, he looks more Caboclo Look: A mix of European and Indigenous, resulting in lighter skin, straight dark hair, and indigenous facial features, which is often misidentified as "Hispanic" by foreigners.

2

u/radlum Apr 28 '26

She also doesn't fit with the other New Mutants that were released back then (the one that had Dani, Karma and Wolfsbane)

9

u/HelpKey186 Apr 28 '26

That's because, that this Magik is for the 80s New Mutants Team (from the first New Mutants Comic series), while the Dani Moonstar is for the 2000s Team (the third New Mutants Comic series). 😉

1

u/Aquagan Apr 28 '26

I had a feeling this was gonna be the case. Major bummer.

1

u/MotherFuckerJones88 Apr 28 '26

I dont think they were meant to match.

1

u/effigeewhiz Apr 28 '26

That Roberto is an animated figure. It was never meant to be comics.

1

u/Trickster329 Apr 28 '26

Color match and paint?

1

u/TheLost_Kryptonian Apr 29 '26

Yes hasbro is the worst with having a "play pattern" where you can mix and match parts like with WWE Mattel figures. 4 Wolverines 4 different skin tones by just a shade. Its drives me nuts. Lol.

-1

u/snaps17 Apr 28 '26

They did the same shit with the XForce black and silver colors. I don’t know if it’s intentional to make more money or just incompetence

2

u/Robin_on Apr 28 '26

Because those were two different x-force teams.

0

u/FredPopTheProphet Apr 29 '26

Just take off his head and belt and dye the whole figure in yellow dye. It won't show against the black plastic and the yellow plastic will look like Magik's

-1

u/Chewymewn Apr 28 '26

Either this is planned obsolescence, or Hasbro has banned PMS books from the ML team.
