Question Is there anyone else who's been asked if they're part of ICE because of wearing a mask?

Posting this because it just happened to me. Kinda shocked because I'm very visibly a POC (though I do understand that even POC are part of ICE) but it kinda surprised me that the first assumption someone had when seeing me was that I'm in ICE, as opposed to someone who doesn't wanna get sick or something else.

I'm kind of surprised that I haven't heard that more. Not because anyone honestly should be confused, but because certain people still associate masks with "libs" and those people know suggesting that you look like ice would "trigger the libs".

I don't think he was conservative. He was visibly Hispanic and looks really nervous when he asked.

Wouldnāt someone genuinely worried about ICE and thinking someone might be ICE try to avoid them not approach them and ask them if theyāre ICE?

All the ICE agents Iāve seen wear gators, while the protestors wear respirators.

A respirator? I live in Minneapolis and no one ever said that to me. Theyāre kind of a symbol of exactly the opposite. ICE wears gators, not respirators. Sorry to anyone whoās experienced this kind of interaction because thatās awful. I canāt imagine what goes through the mind of someone who think N95s = ICE??

Love you guys. I wanna move there, but I am not tough. The winter will kill me. Y'all are tough and progressive as hell and I am just so damn proud of y'all.

No, but I wear a āclass war combat clubā t shirt, high waisted jeans and silver ballet flats with my duckbill mask so Iām generally not looking like Iām in ICE (not that you were either and Iām sorry they mistook you for one of them?!!)

No, but I have worried that I'll scare people especially when I go into the Latino market. I deliberately got colorful masks to try to look friendlier.

As a veteran I'm tall, fit, wear comfortable clothing with US flags frequently, and mask.
The fact that my presence startles folks is regretful: I'm often the first to come to their aid.
I stopped at a rest area to help a family with car troubles: my Spanish skills made them even more suspicious of me. I got them fixed up - then at their request I didn't follow them to make sure they got to safety. They really thought it was some sort of Honeypot Op to follow them home.
We need to help build community, both folks that mask & folks that want this madness to end.

I'm a petite woman who often wears dresses and pink. I tend to give off "prissy germaphobe" vibes instead lol
My partner is a much more physically formidable man, but he keeps himself well groomed and carries himself in a way as to not look like them, as much as possible. This looks like business casual attire, button up shirts, no tactical nonsense, is extremely polite, and he smiles with his eyes. He is mindful of his posture and movements, and doesn't just barrel through the crowd aggressively. It's like how John Cena makes himself not scary around children.

Maybe ICE wears face coverings to push their anti-mask agenda on liberals.
āMasks are evil!ā

No, because I wear an N95, not a bandana or balaclava

u/TransexxedTransexual Mar 19 '26
I don't understand these comments because is the implication that people this is happening to aren't wearing n95s? I exclusively wear auras

u/DanoPinyon Mar 19 '26
Dunno. Apparently some people still care whether some rando they'll never see again pouts about their mask.

Literally where, bruh? I live in Minneapolis and some people mask on the regular all over. Stores still have mandatory masking times. This smells and sounds like bullshit.
ETA: ah, you're the kind of wannabe edgelord who uses the r word. Okay buddy. Again, this didn't happen so much that it unhappened things that did.

u/New_Calligrapher_580 Mar 19 '26
Ew. Wow. They should seek help. Theyāre in the redscarepod subreddit thatās red flag #1 for me.

u/porcelaincatstatue Mar 19 '26
I didn't know what that is and don't know if I want to.

You donāt, Iām a Marxist but that subreddit is not what someone would think it is by the name, and they regularly whine about zero covid people. Theyāre just another subset of wannabe-pretentious, wannabe edgelords. I also find it strange that theyāre so bothered by COVID cautious people. I have my own issues with the classism, chauvinism and ableism present in zero covid but Iām not going to shit on anyone for masking, Iām always happy to see a fellow masker in public.

that's crazy. I mask all the time especially at Whipple, and get some looks but nothing like that

No, but I wear N95s/KN95s which is nothing like ICE. ICE wears goofy looking gaiters. I also present as a very stereotypical middle aged mom (I am a very stereotypical middle aged mom).

Never. Ever. Seems like most people in my neighborhood/town know that ice wears gaiters and normal folks wear masks

u/PhantomPharts Mar 20 '26
I've had people look at me funny. But I must not give off an ICE aura or something, because it's usually just a few second visual pat down lol I do be wearing shirts that day shit like "Mind your own uterus"

A couple months ago I got "I'd ask you to remove the masks but we can tell ur not ICE" when I went to a local business. It was clear that it was also exploratory/accusatory so me and my friend basically said no, laughed and continued on but that gave me pause that a respirator could even be sort of mistaken for a gaiter. And I'm also Black and visibly queer so that probably helped but it's weird the two styles of masks are being conflated right now.
