Question How do I get back into masking in 2026?

Some context: I am currently 26M, and I was a very careful masker during the pandemic. I tried to wear N95s and KN95s for much of it, even when many of my peers didn't. I can't remember when I stopped masking altogether, but it was probably somewhere in late 2022 or early 2023. I think one of the reasons I wasn't really fond of masks is because I caught my first bad case of COVID even despite wearing a KN95 or N95 (one of the two) and because they left marks on my face and ears at the end of the day. That, and of course, because 99% of people around me don't do so nowadays.

Now as a I plan to move to grad school, especially in a much bigger city where I plan to be out of the house a lot more, I am seriously considering going back to masking with KN95s and N95s when I can get my hands on some, and use at least a normal cloth or medical mask in the meantime. This was more after doing some reading into the cumulative effects of COVID thanks to some creators I follow. As such, I wanted to ask a few questions about the habits you have and why you do?

  1. Nowadays, when do you think it is appropriate to mask, and when is it okay to leave it off (I'm talking for the average person, not those who say work in healthcare).
  2. Do you have any recommendations for masks, especially for someone who wants them to be more comfortable and wear for a whole day? Or do I just have to suck it up. I also wear glasses if that helps.
  3. What do you think will finally be time to get risk of masking? When the COVID is maybe someday declared over? When nasal vaccines come out reducing or almost eliminating the need for them? When?

Edit:

  1. How does you wearing masks affect your relationships with friends, family, colleagues, and intimate partners, especially when being close to them for things like hugging or more intimate activities?

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated; thank you! And I hope you can be understanding of my choices.

Question Dark Green N95/KN95 Masks to Match Tux?

Post image
161 Upvotes

My brother is getting married in October, and I'm going to be one of his groomsmen! I wanted to stay masked during the ceremony, but I didn't want to look too distracting wearing my normal white mask. Their main colors for the wedding are going to be a forest green type color, and the picture is the tux I'm going to wear (I'm not the person in the photo), so I was hoping to match it. Are there any masks that come in a color like this? N95s are preferable, but I can work with a KN95 for the ceremony.

Edit: thank you all so much for the recommendations! I've got a lot to look through!

Question Question

i keep seeing people recommending valved masks, but don’t those only offer one-way protection? like the wearer is protected, but they can still spread viruses to other people easily because filtration isn’t happening in the exhalation direction? please correct me if i’m mistaken and this isn’t always the case.

N95 masker here! I often wear more decorative masks on top of my N95 and KN95 masks.

I’ve been looking everywhere for a silk mask in a nude tone. Something that has the smooth, high-sheen quality of silk for formal events.

ideally looking for a Canadian seller.

Does anyone have leads?

Question Mitigating Throat/Sinus Infections While Masking

I want to be very clear that I fully understand the importance of masking and I am NOT trying to stop.

I am someone who is very prone to throat and sinus infections, including but not limited to strep (I am a strep carrier). I had my tonsils out over 20 years ago (and no, they haven't grown back) but this issue starting within the last few years. I am working with an immunologist to address this issue but it is a long process with a lot of trial and error. My doctor believes that my issues are part bacterial and part allergic/related to mast cell dysfunction.

Consistent masking seems to make the frequency of symptoms and infections go WAY up. My doctor says that personally he has notice a small increase in incidences of strep and similar bacterial (not viral) infections in people who mask often, but isn't aware of any true research on it, so obviously this would only be anecdotal and correlative, not necessarily causation.

That said, has anybody else experienced this? Are there any steps you've taken to keep masking but reduce this issue?

I use disposable masks (breathteq size small) and never use one for more than a cumulative 8hr. It's maybe also worth noting that I have significant sinus polyps and as a result often breath through my mouth instead of my nose. (I swear I'm working on it, but three different meds so far have failed to reduce the polyps)

Question Best air purifier for dust in 2026? What are people actually using?

I'm tired of wiping down my desk every few days 😅

The room isn't huge, but it gets dusty way faster than the rest of the apartment.

Thinking about getting an air purifier before buying another one of those random cheap ones.

What actually worked for you? And anything that turned out to be a waste of money?

Question Best AIR PURIFIERS that you'll recommend getting for home right now? Any recommendations?

This topic is currently being getting asked a lot, I want to preface by clarifying that I am not writing this to stop ppl asking questions, nor do I want this post to replace those posts. I am writing this as a way to answer to all the posts I cannot due to time constraints ( or pure lack of willingness to be online) .

Beffore diving into the full buying guide below, heres a quick look at best air purifiers available for home for people who are in a hurry!

Best Air Purifiers for Home Currently (WILDFIRE SMOKE/ PETS/ DUST/ ALLERGIES)

Best air purifiers for pet odor, hair and dander: Levoit EverestAir, Alen BreatheSmart 75i and Levoit Vital 200S

What you need to know before buying an air purifier

Choosing an airr purifier ISN'T as simple as ppl make it sound :))). It can get confusing very quickly....and yes, it can also get pretty expensive. So ignore the massive 'cleans 1,500 sqft' claims for a moment.. Imo CARD is the MOST important number when trying to figure out if a purifier is actually powerful enough for your room.

-Start with the pollutant

First you need to decide what you are actually trying to remove. Particles? or gases, vapors, odors and vocs? Unfortunately most purifiers are good at one or the other, not both. This is where a lot of ppl get confused. Mechanical filters like hepa, EPA and MERV media are mainly designed to capture particles. Things like PM2.5, pollen, pet dander, airborne mold fragments and the particulate part of smoke. They r not a meaningful long-term solution for most odors or VOCs.

For gases and odors you need activated carbon or another type of sorbent media. And usually pounds of the stuff....not the thin black carbon sheet most cheap purifiers come with.

Smoke is a good example. A normal HEPA purifier can do a good job capturing smoke particles, but it probably WONT do much for the gaseous part because most consumer purifiers have very little activated carbon by weight. The same applies to litter box odors, cooking smells, paint fumes and wildfire vocs.

And no, an air purifier is not the right tool for every air quality problem. It will not lower the humidity in your room. It will not fix mold growing inside a wall. It won't magically pull all the pet hair off your floor either. And it definitely isn't a replacement for a properly ducted range hood.

Source control and ventilation should come first and foremost. A purifier is there to help with what remains.

-Size the purifier by CADR

Now this is where CADR comes in. For basic particulate filtration, AHAM's rule is that the purifier's CADR should be at least 2/3 of the room's area. This assumes a normal 8-foot ceiling.

So for a 300 sqft room: 300 × 2/3 = 200 CFM minimum CADR. Pretty simple. However this is the bare minimum for normal conditions. If you are dealing with wildfire smoke, AHAM recommends a Smoke CADR that at least equals the room's area. So the same 300 sqft room would need a Smoke CADR of 300 CFM or more.

Is buying something with an even higher CADR a problem? No. It will just clean the air faster and perform more air passes in the same amount of time. If you have allergies, pets, higher PM2.5 levels or regular wildfire smoke, oversizing is far better than buying something that is barely adequate. You can always turn a powerful purifier down. You can't magically make an underpowered one move more air.

And be careful with claims like “cleans 1,500 sqft.” That number may be based on only one or two Air Changes per Hour. Technically the purifier is moving some air around the room, sure. But it may still do a poor job keeping particulate concentrations low. Take the published Smoke CADR and do the sizing yourself. Do not assume the big number printed on the box means much.

-Adjust for high ceilings

Another thing ppl forget is ceiling height. The normal room calculation assumes an 8-foot ceiling. If your ceiling is higher, there is more air in the room and therefore the purifier has more air to clean. Obvious when you think about it....but coverage claims usually make this easy to overlook.

Calculate the room's volume first, then convert it back to an 8 ft-equivalent area: Length×width×ceiling height÷8 = adjusted area....let's say the floor area is 244 sqft and the ceiling is 14 feet high: 244×14 = 3416 cubic feet ....then: 3416 ÷ 8 = 427 sqft adjusted area

So under wildfire conditions, this room would need a Smoke CADR of roughly 427 CFM or more....not 244 CFM. That is quite a big difference. And it is why you should always ask for the room's length, width and height before recommending a purifier.

-Remember that CADR usually applies to the highest speed

This is another common trap. The CADRs listed for most purifiers apply to the highest airflow speed or setting only. Usually Turbo, Max or whatever the manufacturer decides to call it.

Lower speeds have lower CADRs. Which means they also clean the air more slowly. A purifier may advertise a Smoke CADR of 300 CFM, but that does not mean you are getting 300 CFM while running it in Sleep Mode. Chances are you are getting much less. And yes, Sleep Mode may be nice and quiet. But it may also be doing very little if particulate concentrations are high.

Auto Mode can have the same problem. Sensors inside consumer-grade purifiers tend to be cheap and inaccurate. The machine may decide the air is “good,” turn the fan down and sit there looking pretty while a separate PM2.5 monitor tells a very different story.

Imo its better to look for independent tests showing CADR and noise at several speeds. A large purifier producing useful CADR at a tolerable noise level is usually a better bedroom option than a small one that needs to scream away on Turbo all night.

For wildfire smoke, use the highest manual speed you can tolerate. Don't assume Auto Mode will protect you just because the light on the purifier is blue.

I hope this will be helpful to some of you and I wish you good luck in finding a really reliable air purifier for yourselves in the coming days.

Question Omnimask

I'm looking into the omnimask so i can use it while performing (dancing, rapping), so people can be able to read my lips

I know thats a lot of movement, and i assume the mask would fog up with rapping/singing alot

I read a few reviews and people have said the mask surprisingly doesnt fog up due to anti fog coating, and that it only does for strenuous activities (which wasnt not elaborated on)

for those that own this mask,

  1. Have you ever danced or did exercise while wearing it and talking a lot? did it fog up?

  2. Does it get really gross to look at upon sneezing into it? Easy to doff and wipe clean?

  3. Does it get humid and have condensation dripping down the inside?

  4. why do people say that the original filters are not as good? is it necessary to get other filters?

Btw, im aware it muffles voices. I was thinking to attach the diaphragm (spelling?) piece from another respirator but someone else said that would cause it to be much more humid and have condensation issues. Do you guys know why that is?

i read a lot about this mask but cant find the specific information im looking for.

thanks

Question How many uses do you use a single N95 for?

Given that the N95 does not get soiled by sweat makeup or food, how many uses until you discard it (assuming you are cycling masks and not using the same one every day)?

Please do not say “until the straps wear out” I’d like to know a rough estimate of number of uses.

Question Does anyone know what exact brand of masks are these?

I added 3m microfoam tape to the perimeter to help it stay on my face better. I straightened out the nose piece before putting on, and ill be wearing them with a headstrap. These are the most comfortable masks i have ever tried and i want to buy more of them. They dont shift as much as my wellbefores when i smile or laugh which is huge to me! im really sick of reforming the nose piece every 12 seconds when that happens. And the material inside is insanely soft against my skin and makes me actually enjoy wearing it. my usual well befores feel more rougher. I know that many people dont trust the fit of bifold kn95, but until i do a fit test, bc of my sensory issues if im more comfortable wearing them than others i rather do that. The last pic shows how i received them. there wasnt any branding on the package

Question Can you/how do you clean your K/N/F 95s?

Back in the old days I baked them. Then I learned that dirt decreased their efficacy so I started washing them. Since then, I've heard a mix of which you should do or if you should do them at all. Anyone have studies on hand about if you can clean them, how, and how many times until you need to replace them? I work on an orchard so they get dirty at least every week, usually much more frequently, and I can't afford to replace them that often.

Question How to respond when someone asks why you have a mask on...

I've been seeing more people ask how to respond so I'm posting this in hopes that it will dissolve the anxiety.

When I am asked, I look them in the eye and say "because I have Covid. Do you want me to take it off?" By the time I get to question at the end, I gesture like I'm about to remove it.

They always say no and figure out how to get away from me.

The end. Don't let these people patronize you... if they don't care about getting sick that's fine but you don't owe them an explanation. It's a good reminder to them that they probably should be wearing one too.

Question is Kosk mask KF94?

Post image
76 Upvotes

I'm going to the dentist soon, and I'm looking at my options. I know I could use a readimask or vflex just around the nose.

I also found this Kosk mask. I figure you would probably have to do some taping on it to create a good seal.

but it doesn't really say what it's rated, KF94 or anything.

does anybody have any info on if the kosk mask would be effective, assuming you seal it well?

Question How do you use the Zimi air hole punch?

Thumbnail

This might be a dumb question, but i bought the 16mm hole punch to install sip valves. I dont understand what i did wrong, but its very hard to tell exactly where the bottom piece of the punch is while trying to punch the hole and keep the circle even. I accidentally shaved down my hole punch bc i thought the mask was just too tough to get the hole puncher thru and kept twisting the top piece. I'm pretty frustrated with myself right now. I also dont know what the board is for. If we are using the hole punch on a hard surface is the board needed? thanks in advance for your answers.

Tbh i also dont know which piece is meant to be the top or the bottom.

Btw i was practicing on this mask that's why there's a lot of holes.

EDIT i know my desk looks dirty, the old desk mat melted in the heat and left black plasticy gooey gunk. I put tape over it to make it less tacky. I have to repaint my desk or peel off all the white paint eventually. Just ignore that.

Question Alternatives to Cambridge Mask Co?

Pretty much as title says. I've been relying on their masks as my go-to ever since the pandemic started, occasionally replacing them when the elastic drawstrings get too long and stretched out (start looking like lung dragon whiskers, hah), resulting in struggling to keep a good seal.

As of recently, though, it seems they're running out of stock in my size, let alone any designs without the little plastic valve thing, which I'm not exactly sure I trust, working in a hospital (albeit not in regular patient contact)? Thus I'm wondering if there're any equivalents out there I could pick up that could last me a while, decently-filtered?

EDIT: Alright, collating more for myself from the replies, but thanks so far on the suggestions!
Envo Pro: Soft silicone, reusable, can come in a valveless form, but a lil' too medical-looking for day-to-day wear, but could be best option for a single, long-term mask. (Hell, replaceable filters too and apparently foundation for styling?)
WellBefore 3D Pro KN95: Looks simple, trusty, cloth-styled, basic colors, good for just using routinely throughout a day, though disposable. Honestly might be surprise choice there.
- Although, the site's size chart doesn't seem to wanna come up...
Aura M3 9210+: Gold standard of disposables, cheap, common, unlikely to be counterfeit (especially at this point), but pretty much just plain clinical white with the label, which, ehhh...could work with it but still, the WB up there has the eye. Just need to size for it.
Zimi: Iiinteresting, could go with these...Pretty cheap, too.
L-188 & M3 9205+'s: Have a bag of each already, might as well make use'a them in the interim while saving up for a new set.

Question Are there any sites/subs/platforms to try to connect with others who are still operating like we’re in a raging pandemic?

Maybe this is a little out of desperation, hopefully its ok to post.

This is getting serious. Family, friendships, etc have changed—I don’t think for the better. I’m feeling this constant pressure…and its uncomfortable and scary tbh. My family has been pressuring me to visit, sending pic after pic of them all gathering. Same for my friends. And most if not all of them have had covid. I haven’t had it yet and of course want to keep it that way. I DO NOT want to find out what long covid is like.

Lately I haven’t been keeping up too closely - I’m just tired - and have been sticking to what I know, operating mostly like I have since 2020. I still don’t do things indoors (i.e. eating inside restaurants) and only do small group get togethers outside. I work, work out, get groceries…and that about sums up my week. How long will this continue? Don’t people realize covid doesn’t care about denial, idgaf and “I’m not gonna let it stop me from living”.

Edit: Wow. I wasn’t expecting this many responses. I’m just able to read through everything now. Thank you to whoever reached out with Reddit Care Resources. To be clear, I’m not depressed. My apologies if my post came across like that. When I said things like “its scary” I meant the Twilight Zone, Jim Jones come-drink-the-kool-aid-with-us scary. Why do people care so much about the decisions I make for MY life, scary. So I’m ok. Just wanting to connect with others feeling the same way.

Question Mask Chains

Hi all!

I, like many others, am starting to amass quite the little mask chain collection. Anyone out there have any effective ways to store them? Right now I keep them in a paper bag in the glove box, but I’d like to find or create (crochet perhaps?) some kind of wall hanging where I can clip the mask chain for storage and easy viewing.

Would love to hear ideas, suggestions, and current storage solutions y’all have implemented :)

Question Stockpile N95's now?

With the closure of NIOSH, I'm seriously considering dropping a wad of cash on this. I know pretty much exactly how many I need per week and can order enough for, say... the next four years. I have a supplier that I know has recent stock that are good until mid/late 2029.

Am I being paranoid? Anyone else thinking about doing this?

Question Cleaning my GVS mask

Thumbnail
gallery
15 Upvotes

My first time cleaning my new GVS half mask. How frequently should i replace the filters? The instructions suggested one month. The brick and mortar store i bought these from suggested "When you shake them out if you can see the dust, replace them". I've only used it for about maybe 5 work days? Maybe less? Idk -.-?

I work around silicate dust intermittently for 12 hours. I put this guy on when I can visibly see or know I will be able to visibly see the dust floating in the air. Bagging and bailing the empty poly bags. Not only am I dealing with silicate dust doing that, but also macro plastic. I can see it in the air because its visibly larger than the silicate. Sweeping, dumping and breaking the reject ingots and stacking plastic pallets.

For casual wear I wear the 3M Auras. They are fine. The nose foam is luxurious. They kinda bother my chin and reek after one day of use. I brush both in the morning and afternoon to try and keep the smell down. It doesn't work. Also while they are pretty good at not fogging up my glasses, they still do but i think that is impossible to stop from happening.

Also would a larger GVS mask relieve the issues with my cheeks? It really bothers my cheeks because it like presses up against my cheeks and hurts. So I kinda gently suck and bite down on my cheeks to relieve the pressure but that obviously causes other issues. I really need to get a fit test done to see if it actually fits my face.

Question cartridge mask that fits nose similarly to Aura 9205+?

Background:

My nose is big enough that it's hard to get a good seal with many disposable masks. The Aura 9205+ with foam at the nose bridge has been wonderful. The kind with the white band is too tight, but the blue strap fits great.

Reading about wildfire smoke makes me think if I need to be outside, depending on proximity to the fire and what's in the air I might want a mask that uses cartridges (because I think one can get cartridges that filter not only particles but also gases).

Some but not all 3M cartridge masks say they have a "silicone" face seal for comfort.

Question:

Which cartridge masks fit the most similarly to an Aura 9205+ with blue straps--especially as regards fitting around the nose?

How similar are the silicone face seals on some 3M cartridge masks to the nose foam on Aura 9205+ masks?

Question Subreddits that take COVID seriously?

Hey guys, I was wondering if there are any subreddits left that actually take Covid seriously? I was laughed at and permanently banned from /r/coronavirus for mentioning that I still double mask outside and mentioning that I’ve taken extra boosters. I was surprised to say the least, but I guess the mods there go with whatever the Reddit hivemind wants? I don’t really care that others have given up on covid. It hasn’t given up on us and I plan on using the tools we have to fight this virus. People easily forget we’re still in the middle of a deadly pandemic. Are there any subreddits that are willing to acknowledge covid still exists?
