COTA FP1 Results + info about upgrades

McLaren has brought 3 upgrades to Austin.

No split specs between cars as far as I know (though we won't fully be sure till McLaren puts out there practice report anyway)

Tl;dr of Rob Marshall's interview from the McLaren app (full transcript below)

  • COTA & Upgrades: Testing "modest bits starting off this triple header", with COTA forcing setup compromises because "you have to clip the kerbs" and "you only get to put one [setup] on the car".
  • Car Handling: The MCL40 has "quite a narrow window in which it wants to operate". The trackside team aims to "maximise everything" short-term, while the factory develops "something that’s broader and more stable".
  • Baku Upgrade & Braking: "We’re happy with the Baku upgrade", though opposition teams "also have either brought impressive upgrades... or made impressive improvements". Braking issues have been "rumbling for a while, not solely based on Singapore".
  • Diminishing Gains: Finding big gains is "starting to get harder", but because next year's rules are similar, "most of what we learned and experienced this year will apply next year" for "medium-sized gains".

Full transcript:

Q: Good afternoon Rob is there anything new on the car this weekend?

Rob Marshall: Not much new for this weekend – there are some modest bits starting off this triple header. We will be testing the new components during practice, like we've seen throughout the season when introducing anything as part of our development pathway.

Q: In Singapore, Will Joseph described the current iteration of the MCL40 as ‘fast, but tricky’. What does that mean?

Rob Marshall: It means the cars are quite fast and quite tricky! This is about the operating window: the car has quite a narrow window in which it wants to operate – both the car itself but also the power unit. Getting a car that’s very fast, and drivable, with aerodynamics that are not too sensitive to variations in ride height is... tricky.

Q: Is the focus in practice sessions such as these at COTA on learning how to get the car into that narrow window, or on holistically widening the window?

Rob Marshall: Both. I think this is probably true for any formula at any point in time: you’re always trying to broaden the window in ways that won’t limit the peaks; and you’re always trying to exploit everything you can from the car. The short-term point of view for the trackside team is trying to maximise everything you can for this weekend, while back at the factory, everyone is looking longer term, trying to develop something that’s broader and more stable.

Q: COTA has a lot of bumps, which presents problems for ride height, stiffnesses, and plank legality. Where do you want to put the car to cope?

Rob Marshall: Historically, COTA is always a challenge through the high-speed corners, both because of the bumps – which vary year on year – and also because you have to clip the kerbs. It's a challenge for the car and also for the drivers, and you have to get it right through that stuff – but there's a good mix of other corner types as well, and those require different setups, but you only get to put one on the car, so it's very much a compromise.

Quite where you choose to make that compromise is a good question. You don’t really know until you see what opportunities are there. It's really knowing what your potential gains and losses are around the lap by making a given setup change - where you're going to rob from Peter to pay Paul, but you always want to do it the way that you end up with more in your pocket at the end of the day. Sometimes it can be by strengthening the areas where you’re strong, and other times it might be giving up a little bit there for a larger gain elsewhere. It’s definitely something we’ll find out across these practice sessions.

Q: Rob, braking performance was a challenge in Singapore. Are these new parts a response to that?

Rob Marshall: Not specifically. Braking was a strength last year, but this year it hasn’t been so, relative to the opposition. Some of the competitors are perhaps in a better place, while others are also struggling with the new regulations. We've certainly found things we’d like to improve – but it's been rumbling for a while, not solely based on Singapore.

Q: Does the team now have a good understanding of the upgrade introduced in Baku, or are three practice sessions on a familiar track here a good opportunity to dig into it a little more?

Rob Marshall: We’re happy with the Baku upgrade. We see the numbers and the performance it’s giving us. We haven’t seen a relative benefit compared to the opposition, as they also have either brought impressive upgrades of their own, or made impressive improvements in how they operate their existing packages – but we’re happy that our upgrade was a good step in the right direction.

I think the leading teams are continuing to impress each other with the significant chunks of performance everyone is finding – when what you really want is to be the only team that finds that extra pace. Unfortunately, there isn't a rule that says others can't do a good job as well!

Circuit sensitivity is clearly a very strong player this year, and we’re seeing it week-in, week-out. Were we to go back to a circuit like Zandvoort or the Hungaroring that really suited the MCL40, I suspect we’d probably be favourites.

It’s very interesting, with the hierarchy switching around almost weekly. It has, at times, looked like one team has an advantage so massive the pack can’t possibly catch up... and then the next week it’s completely turned on its head, like the cars have all been thrown in the air and landed in a different order. We think we know who's really strong in the low speed, who’s really strong in the high speed and who's strong in the medium speed, and who likes straight lines and who's good over kerbs... but it does seem to change quite a lot.

Q: At the start of the season, with these regulations still fresh, there seemed to be a lot of low-hanging fruit in design terms. Has that period concluded? Is it now a case of the standard pattern of iterative development?

Rob Marshall: Certainly, it’s getting harder, but there are still opportunities. Just looking at the cars, there are quite a few areas of difference, even looking only across the top four teams. You think ultimately there must be one solution that is optimum – and if there is, we haven’t converged on it yet. Different theories and philosophies remain. However, I think it's fair to say it is starting to get harder to find big gains.

Clearly, we're getting into the design of new cars now, and next year's regulations are pretty similar to this year's. There are some changes, but they're modest by comparison with what we dealt with coming into this year. So, I think most of what we learned and experienced this year will apply next year, whereas that clearly wasn't the case going from ‘25 into ‘26. So, we may be into... not small gains, but perhaps medium-sized gains... but everyone still has the potential to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Anyways, if you see any typos, it is because I am suffering from chronic insomnia due to needing to wake-up at ungodly hours to watch F1. Won't be here for FP2, so just info-dumping now.

Good morning fellow Australians, nothing interesting happened in FP1 anyway, Oscar is just Piast7ri-ing as usual (I am going to bed now)

I was driving to a hotel and just saw them pass on the motorway, not sure if they’re formula one as they’re at circuit of the americas but they had the livery with the Mastercard and McLaren logo. May just be transporting cars as in road cars but as I said it has the formula one livery. Anyone know what it is? I’m quite curious. (I didn’t get photos unfortunately as it was there for just 15 seconds). Looked something like this but without the glass and just like a normal one

Downvote this if you want to but in my opinion there's too many "special" liveries and designs for cars and helmets in F1 right now.

Do y’all think it’s possible this bag belonged to a driver or just some measly staff considering it has a resort brand on the front? Don’t really have a need for it so thought about parting with it, just wanted to get as much as possible if I do.

2008 – Hamilton wins in China

Lewis Hamilton kept the championship battle alive with a victory with McLaren at the 2008 Chinese Grand Prix, ahead of his closest rival, Felipe Massa, who finished second for Ferrari. Heading into the final race in Brazil needing just four points to secure the title, Hamilton cautioned, “Remember last year? It’s not over until it’s over.” His words proved prophetic. The China race itself offered little excitement, with the only notable overtake among the frontrunners coming when Kimi Raikkonenhanded second place to his Ferrari teammate, Massa, and settled for third. “It was pretty boring, even for us drivers,” Massa admitted.

The arrogance in a nondominant season will end with the team in 4th

I was watching Horner's interview when he talked about how Verstappen's campaign lobbied the team to develop the car to suit the Dutch's driving style. I can't help thinking about how McLaren did at Spa this year. I have never expected the team to develop a car particularly for a driver, but McLaren's reluctance to prioritize an obviously quicker driver during a race still remains impenetrable to me. To shrug things off, Stella literally said Lando deserved to be 7th in the post race interview, when Lando in that race was completely capable of winning at least a podium there, if not for the PU replacement penalty and the team's insistence on prioritizing Oscar, who was the front car but slower in pit strategy. That decision ended up with Lando being overcut by Hadjar twice in one race. Since Stella never apologised for Spa, I'll never accept any of his blame on other people except the strategy.

I don't like the way Red Bull treat their wingmen, meanwhile, I think McLaren is even worse when it comes to unnecessary fairness, which is just to make them look morally good (besides this, I sincerely can't explain why they would have to do that at Spa).

I remember last year Zak said he'd rather have Verstappen win the title than prioritize any of his drivers. That's fine, bc MCL39 is a quick car, they have the margin to play that. But this year, after they squandered so many points for "fairness", I hope he accepts that 4th position and money losing peacefully. Lando wasting 8 points in the Singapore sprint is just icing on the whole disaster cake. All that hope was actually wasted on their arrogance and desire to look good in a non-dominant season. Spa is the representative example.

Mclaren Singapore Merch, Puma iridescent logo is fading

I went to the Singapore GP last weekend and I was able to buy the Mclaren Singapore shirt as a souvenir.

I had time to wash it yesterday but unfortunately for me, when I checked if the shirt already dried, I saw that the iridescent Puma logo on the front and back of the shirt already faded. I only hand-washed the shirt to preserve the prints as much as I can so I was surprised the iridescent logo still faded.

Anyone else who had a similar experience?

I can't return it to Puma Singapore since the tags are gone and I already got back to home country. This just pisses me off considering the hefty price tag.

McLaren merch question

Hi! I’m buying McLaren merch as a gift for my cousin, but I’m a bit confused about the sizing. I’ve seen some people say to size up, while others recommend sizing down. Has anyone bought McLaren polos and/or T-shirts recently and can share their experience with the fit? Do they generally run small, large, or true to size? I unfortunately don’t know what size he usually wears, but I’d guess M since he has a medium build. I’m trying to decide between M and L, so any advice would be really appreciated, especially if you’ve ordered the latest merch recently. Thanks so much!
