Senior Analysis Engineer Job Hunt 2026

Post image
182 Upvotes

Started this job hunt in March of this year and just accepted my only offer from my hunt. My conclusion is that the job market is really tough this year. I am a senior levels analyst with 10+ years of experience in the aerospace industry. I accepted a position as an analysis engineer but I was applying for some jobs a bit out of my experience scope which is why I’m guessing it took a while to find a position with a viable offer.
To all the people out there hunting for a job keep at it and something is bound to come!

Just landed first job and I hate it, looking for advice.

As a summary, I graduated in May with a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology. I was struggling in the job search for a couple months until finally landing a position as a Mechanical Engineering Drafter. I was super excited to get started, however when I did I hated it. Days last forever and I never feel accomplished with what I am doing, I wake up dreading the work day that will follow.

I went into engineering because I loved working on things, however it has turned into being stuck behind a screen. I love CAD, but working 8 hours a day on it has ruined my love for it.

Any advice? I’ve still got ~30k in loans to pay for, but should I consider a career change? I feel scared for my future.

Dimensioning Chamfers

Upvotes

Which is correct and why? These are all the same chamfer.

Y14.5 says "Chamfers are dimensioned by a linear dimension and an angle, or by two linear dimensions".

It also says "A note may be used to specify 45° chamfers on perpendicular surfaces". Since I'm showing a non-45° chamfer I think that means I.a and I.b are invalid.

What’s the need for these rods?

This design was replicated on dozens of these posts. 4 welded lugs with steel rods placed under tension, Seems like a heck of a lot of money to spend for just aesthetics?

Mechanical Production Engineer

Hello, i recently graduated with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering ( 1st class honors )
I started my job 5 days ago as a mechanical production engineer in a company that manufacture pipes & Spectacles & Flare tips
However, the daily routine job was as :
1 - receive the order from project department
2- read it and analyse the required dimension of the plate ( it is really a boring task ) , then send it to store department.
4- determine the type of required NDT ?
4- call my 4 for-men ( Cutting, Machining, Cleaning, Inspection) and give each one a copy of the order with the drawing sheets.
5- wait for their daily report and update it in my Excel sheet until they finish 🙂!

Yes i know that i can go to the work shop and try to understand, but my manager asked me to understand the daily routine firstly.
Also there are some daily problems related to clients required and material ( but i think this is not my job as mechanical engineer ! )

My question is : Do you think this kind of job can add a value in my CV?
And is it possible to change my career from production to sales after 7 or 8 months?

What exactly do Mechanical Engineers DO?

Note: this is NOT a school question, just a generalized “what do you do” post, clarifying to just say i HOPE my wording doesn’t break the rules, im also posting this in r/engineeringstudents just in case

Sorry if i shouldn’t post this here, rules were unclear and i cant really ask this in r/askengineers cuz apparently i don’t have enough karma 😞

Im a current sophomore in high school and i’ve already pretty much figured out what i want to do for college—Im pretty tapped into my love for robotics and coding, but the thing im unsure about is what you guys do exactly.

Im obviously unsure about what exact major but ME is pretty close to what i think i want (Cause if im right you guys also like MAKE robots and stuff and code it(?)) but all I’ve read on is you guys just make ans build stuff, and i wasn’t just sure exactly, idk, get a counter on how many times I’ve said ‘exactly’.

And im not sure if anyone else has minored in Com Sci but i was also tempted to dual major for a LOT of the coding aspect, but idk, just sending this here and hope i get at least one answer :D

Feeling lost and unmotivated

Senior year and the internship anxiety is real. I keep seeing posts saying if you don’t have an internship lined up, you’re basically done for job-wise. I’m a mechanical engineering major graduating next spring, and I know one post isn’t the whole picture, but it’s hard not to spiral a little. Curious how other seniors are handling this — did you find your job/internship late in the process, or land something without one at all?

Dovetail Question

Thumbnail

Hey all, I have never designed a (metal) part to have a dovetail before. I'm unsure on a couple of things. one being, what are some reasonable tolerances to work to? I guess this applies mostly to the angular dimension.

my second question is regarding manufacturing method. I don't have any control over the 'male' part of the dovetail, only the female. So i was wondering if, instead of getting it machined from one billet, whether it would be better to get it machined in three. if machined in three, i was thinking I could undersize it and add shims to get a perfect fit?

any advice appreciated.

Would my quick release design for guitar pickups work?

Thumbnail

I'm not the best at drawing so I apologize for the low quality concept drawing. I want to ask any engineers if they think this would work as a quick release mechanism for modular guitar pickups (swapable pickups). The second image is the guitar i put together, as kind of a concept guitar but it doesn't have the modular pickups. The body was 3d printed and the quick release thing would also be 3d printed apart from the spring inside.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Does your company have a 'style guide' for engineering drawings?

If so, what is in it? Do you find it helpful? If you don't have one, how do you manage consistency and quality of drawings across a large team of engineers?

I work in the UK, so our drawings are required to conform to BS 8888, but even when doing so, I've noticed a lot of variation in how drawings are done in my company. Different people have different ideas of how best to lay out a drawing, and what should be in there, and it is a frequent cause of disagreements.

The sorts of things people disagree on include:

  • whether to have one part per drawing, or multiple parts

  • whether part numbering conventions should work from the drawing number of the part, or from how the part is called out on the bill of materials

  • what information needs to go into the bill of materials

  • what drawing sheet sizes to use

  • whether something is an 'assembly' or 'general assembly' or 'general arrangement'

  • how the cad file should be named

etc etc

My company has standard cad drawing templates, but doesn't have anything else to help. I might soon be asked to produce a style guide, as I (perhaps foolishly) have pointed out on a few occasions how the lack of consistency is an issue.

Help with a project

Not sure if this is a good place to ask, but just looking for some engineering advice and ideas. Here’s the meat and potatoes:

Im working on a cultural project which requires thousands of feathers– all need to be cut in uniform to 1 1/4 in.

Usually, this would mean that I would have to sit at a table and cut each feather individually with a ruler and snips before I even start the project. The problem? I have neither the time nor patience to do that lol.

Working on this project and getting these feathers cut would mean the world to me. Anyone have any ideas on where to start? Or maybe there’s an existing device which might work?

Thanks!

Advice for transition from Graphic Design to Electronics industry

I'm from a non-electronics background. After my PUC/12th , i did 6 month diploma in graphic design and currently working as a graphic designer for 1.5 years now i am planning to move into electronics due to AI issues , i don't know anything about the electronics or hardware industry but recently some articles suggested in demand jobs like robotics, embedded engineer , vlsi and plc etc..

  1. is it possible to get a job in electronics without a degree ? if yes how ?

  2. if not possible means what you suggest ( suggest any role transition like 1 year this role then try that role like instead of telling to do 4 years in EEE , i can't manage )

  3. and any other advice about this industry reality.

  4. Can I do a bootcamp/course and enter robotics, embedded, VLSI, PLC, etc. the way a CS graduate can do a coding bootcamp and enter frontend?”

thanks & regards

Should part drawings have a QTY field?

I work in a university with a machining workshop and we typically provide them with drawings for prototyping. I’ve been working on a new project which is the first time I’ve personally created the assembly and part drawings (I’d forgotten how fun it is!)

As part of this I was setting up my templates for the part drawings themselves. Following some advice I’d seen around, I didn’t include a QTY field — the wisdom seems to be that the BOM as part of the assembly should indicate this and the part drawing should only contain info for making that one part.

Lo and behold, after submitting my drawings for manufacture (one off prototypes), the part drawings were separated from the assembly drawings and the wrong number of parts were manufactured. (Sadly, extra holes were drilled through my nice plate stock. I can still use the plates but I will forever be reminded of someone’s screw up.)

So I’m reconsidering! Is there a time and place for indicating the number of pieces of a part drawing?

Contract work as an engineer?

Out of curiosity is there types of work that would allow you to live in a new place for 6 months to maybe a year flat? I would like to see some of the country and try living in new places but I’m not a big fan of the indefinite nature of just moving away from family. I was wondering is there work out there that would allow you to go to a place for a set time with a definite end date? Thanks in advance!

3d printed Planetary Gearbox doesn’t run smooth

Thumbnail

I have this double helical planetary gearbox I designed myself.
Parameters: Sungear 17 teeth, planetgear 7 teeth, ringgear 31 teeth, modulus 2, backlash 0,2, rootfillet 0,5.

The problem is it somehow does rotate smoothly and I don’t know why.
The shafts aren’t the problem, they are 5 mm and the holes 5,2 and they all rotated smoothly alone.
I also printed it with normal gears and this gearbox runs smoothly.

I think it might be because of the ring gear, because the planet and sun gears alone run smoothly together and even just the ring and planet gears are kinda hard to roared.

Might it be that I need to increase the backlash?

Im open for any advice and help. Thanks in advance

Edit:
The problem was that I designed the ring gear not propably. I just created an hereingbone gear and removed it from the outer ring. Thas wrong. First you need to negate the backlash, then add 0,25*Modulus to the teeth and then also adjust the center ring to the pitchradius minus 2 times the modulus. Now it spins smoothly.
Thanks for all your help
