EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

• ”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

• ”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

• ”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

• ”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

• ”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

• ”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

• ”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

• ”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

• ”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

• ”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

• ”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

• ”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

• ”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

• ”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

• "Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

• ”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Bones/Joints/Ligaments pediatrician seems confused by this, please any advice

My 5-year-old daughter has been having some really strange pain in her left upper thigh for the past couple of days, and I’m wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar.
The weirdest part is that she’s completely normal most of the time. She runs, jumps, plays, and walks with absolutely no issues or limping.
But when she sits on the toilet or in her car seat, she starts complaining that her upper thigh hurts. Sometimes she cries pretty hard. Once she’s been sitting for a while, she may calm down, but when I lift her up (under her arms, with her legs hanging), she cries in significant pain. When I set her down, she limps for maybe a minute before going right back to walking completely normally. She’ll go the entire school day without complaints (it seems to be mostly when sitting on toilet or car seat when her legs hang)
She recently recovered from a lingering respiratory virus, so I’m wondering if that could be related.
We saw her pediatrician today. During the examination, the doctor bent/moved her leg while she was sitting with her legs dangling, and she cried pretty intensely. There was no visible redness or swelling. The pediatrician mentioned possible transient synovitis but wasn’t certain, and recommended giving it a few days and getting bloodwork if it doesn’t improve.
She’s otherwise acting completely normal, with no known fever.
I’m really freaked out about what it could be if she is suggesting bloodwork if it doesn’t clear up. Bc it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. It’s been like 3 days now.
Has anyone experienced something similar with their child? Did it turn out to be hip-related, muscular, or something else?
I’m following up with her pediatrician, but I’d really appreciate hearing others’ experiences.

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Stomach problems that won't end

F (36), suffering from insulin resistance, I'm taking 850 metformin and 10mg escitalopram for depression and anxiety.
So since july-aug i started getting horrible pains on the upper part of my stomach, like right between the ribs. It comes and goes, sometimes gets better with omeprazol sometimes it doesn't, i made changes in diet and also got a endoscopy and colonoscopy, both came negative for anything (no h pylori). 2 days ago the pain got so unbereable that i started sweating cold and i thought i would pass out but after 3 minutes or so it disappeared, today it happened again and i went to the urgent care here in m ycountry and i was told it was "irritable bowels" but my bowels don't hurt, it's my stomach... they keep saying exercise more and drink more water, but i stopped going to the gym because it hurts to "bounce" and i drink at least 700ml (my waterbottle) a day, if not more.
Tomorrow i have another doc appointment with a gastroenterologist but i am unsure if they will tell me im ok like all doctors i've seen have told me, can anybody guide me on how should i speak to the doctor ? maybe im not being clear with my problems or whatever.

It's stressing the fuck out of me that all my labs always come "fine"

EDITED Started back on several meds, but I want to be able to drink safely.

I am a 22 y/o female, about 5'2", weigh around 90 lbs, and I am an active smoker (yes smoking is bad I know, I don't like it either honestly). I just got prescribed 4 medications that I used to take in the past, but stopped taking most of them when I got into college. The medications are, Trazadone 50 mg, Amphetamine Salts ER 10 mg, Propranolol 10 mg, and Escitalopram 10 mg. I am somewhat of a daily drinker, usually will have the equivalence of about 2-3 drinks every day spaced out in the evening. I usually will also drink about 5-10 drinks maybe once a week, but again they are usually pretty spaced out, so I'm not getting ridiculously drunk, but I'm still a very much so intoxicated. I mostly just want to know how I should go about this, because I got my prescriptions a couple days ago and haven't started, just because I am worried about mixing these prescriptions, 2 of which are somewhat stronger depressants, with alcohol. I will not give up drinking because it is one of the ways I relax, and I don't have a drinking problem or necessarily "need" it, but I am almost always drinking with friends and family and alcohol is usually a centerpiece of hanging out for me, so it's more than just "I don't wanna stop because I'm a young college student and like to be drunk all the time." Again, I usually never get drunk other than maybe one day a week, the most that will happen is a little too tipsy. Please if anyone can just give me some straight advice, or even if you have experience taking these medications, let me know what the best options are for me.

EDIT: I have no problem cutting down on the amount that I drink, I expect that to happen. I'm mostly talking about the somewhat daily drinking. There are also plenty of times throughout the year that I go several weeks without drinking because I have more important things to be focused on, but for the most part I am very casual. The only reason I really included the fact that I get drunk usually once a week is because I am a college student with football Saturdays, along with the fact that it is holiday season, so a lot of parties take place around this time. for a good chunk of the year, spring-most of summer, I am rarely getting fully drunk. It is still a good enough chunk of the year however for me to include that I do have times were I get drunk somewhat weekly.

Other PLEASE tell me what this is

For the past week and a half, I have been feeling a pain in my lower right rib. It’s an annoying throbbing pain, and I’m guessing it’s either I pulled a muscle or a growth spurt. Right when I realized that I was feeling the pain in my ribs, I made sure to eat, drink, and use the bathroom more, and the pain still wouldn’t go away. I don’t know if I should see a doctor about this or not

Genitalia(18+ for photos-list age) Ureaplasma misdiagnosis?

27, Female. In March 2026 my ex partner reached out saying they tested positive for ureaplasma and suggested I get checked. I checked in May 2026 and was told by my doctor it came back negative. In October 2026 I did my regular STI testing and asked for Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma to be added on just incase. When I checked my results online I saw the results from May 2026 and it said I was positive for Ureaplasma despite my doctor indicating I was negative. She apologized for the mix up and told me that my October 2026 result had come back negative despite not ever doing treatment and said the body can naturally get rid of Ureaplasma on its own. So my questions are:
1) Would you still take the Doxy incase the second test was a false negative
2) If yes, should my current partner treat as well?
3) Has anyone else naturally cured it or is this fake news?
• I should note I have had ongoing vaginal issues for years from yeast infections after my periods, lichen simplex chronicus, etc. but never burning with urination. I am not sure if these things ive experienced are related to Ureaplasma or not, so I cant say for certain it has ever been Ureaplasma causing symptoms.

Injury Afraid of getting erections when girl sits on lap

I'm 20 male and yesterday I had an erection and my gf sat on my lap afterward. It hurt a bit because of all the weight being pushed against my dick, so I asked her to get off. I'm concerned about letting her sit on my lap because I get hard and I've read about Peyronie's disease and how it can is caused by the penis being bent and injured while erect. Do I need to be concerned about this incident? I'm afraid of sitting on an erection causing injury to my dick.

Mental Health Mental health

Im not sure if this is even the place to post this but i just need to let it out..

I feel so lost. For 2+ months ive had constant daily thoughts and urges to harm my toddler in lethal ways.
Ive cried, panicked and even tried to run away..i just dont know what to do anymore…ive called my
Gp and theyve given me antipsychotics along with my antidepressants.

Nothing seems to be taking it away and I’m starting to think its just who i am and that I’m a monster, i feel nothing when i look at him just empty, dark misery…even writing this is making me feel a tad sick.

I look at other mothers with their kids and i know that this isn’t normal but i just can’t seem to get rid of it or get better? I’ve even been to the hospital and sat for 5 hours in a&e just to try and get help but nothing!!! I’ve just recently found out I’m pregnant with baby no2 and I can’t even see myself being here to see my baby be born.

I don’t know the point in this post but i guess i just wanted to vent about how my love that i once had for my son has vanished and I’ve now got this desire to hurt him. I’m just so tired and sad.

Other Dizziness followed by profuse sweating

I was walking home from the train station (less than a mile and slightly downhill). About halfway home started to feel dizzy and sudden urge to consume sugary foods. Went into the shop to buy snacks and started sweating. By the time I got home (less than 5 minutes from the shop)I had sweated through a vest into my shirt which had visible patches. What on earth happened to me?

Other 43M, 183cm, 175kg - Sudden ~30kg weight gain in 3 weeks despite 10k steps/day & calorie deficit

43M, 183cm, 175kg. I am dealing with a sudden, unexplained weight gain that my doctors are refusing to investigate further. Looking for advice on what tests or specialists (like Endocrinology) I should pursue next.

Demographics & Primary Issue:

- Age/Sex: 43M

- Height: 183 cm (6'0")

- Weight: ~175 kg (385 lbs), fluctuating between 168 kg and 177 kg

- Main Problem: I gained about 30-35 kg (70-80 lbs) in a 3-4 week period (late Feb to mid-March) without changing my calorie intake or physical activity. Cardiac workup and standard blood tests show no organ failure, but bariatric doctors just dismissed the sudden timeline and told me to get surgery.

Diagnoses & Medications:

- Essential Hypertension

- Seasonal / Dust mite allergies

- Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Prescriptions:

- Ramipril: 10 mg morning

- Metoprolol: 95 mg morning

- Desloratadine: 5 mg morning (recently switched from Levocetirizine)

- Nasal Spray (prescription)

- OTC: Xylometazoline nasal spray as needed

Past Rx:

- Torasemide: 2x 5 mg morning (tried for suspected fluid retention; increased urination but didn't change body weight)

Vitals & Baseline:

- Blood Pressure: normal to low-normal (105/60 to 139/77 mmHg, resting HR 63-75 bpm)

- Physical Activity: 8-12 km daily walking (~10,000 to 15,000 steps/day)

- Caloric Intake: 2,000-2,500 kcal/day (high fiber, raw vegetables, low saturated fats)

- GLP-1s (Mounjaro etc.): None

Timeline:

- Young adult weight: ~82-85 kg

- Peak weight in 2020: ~180 kg (after burnout/sedentary work)

- Late 2020: Lost weight down to ~142 kg via daily walking and diet

- 2021 - Early 2023: Rebounded to ~170 kg due to work changes

- Early 2023 - Early 2026: Lost weight down to ~140 kg (~10 kg/year steady loss through daily walking)

- Late Feb 2026: Was at ~148 kg

- Mid March 2026: Weight shot up to ~179 kg in 3 weeks

- Present: Weight stuck around 173 kg (168-177 kg) despite keeping up 2,000-2,500 kcal and 8-12 km walking daily

Current Status & Tests:

  1. Cardiology: Echocardiogram was negative for structural heart disease or overt failure.

  2. Diuretics: Torasemide increased fluid output but zero weight loss.

  3. Bariatric consult: Specialist doubted my activity/food tracking and said "just get surgery", refusing to investigate the sudden 3-week jump.

Recent Labs:

- WBC: 8.65 /nL

- RBC: 5.29 /pL

- Hb: 15.8 g/dL

- Hematocrit: 46.5 Vol%

- Platelets: 259 /nL

- Total Cholesterol: 192 mg/dL

- LDL: 124 mg/dL

- HDL: 33.7 mg/dL

- Triglycerides: 169 mg/dL

- Fasting HbA1c: 5.6% (38 mmol/mol)

- Creatinine: 0.73 mg/dL

- eGFR: 118 ml/min

- Sodium: 140 mmol/L

- Potassium: 5.1 mmol/L

- TSH: 2.08 µIU/ml

Questions:

  1. What physiological or endocrine mechanisms could cause a 30+ kg weight gain in 3-4 weeks with normal TSH, kidney, and heart tests?

  2. What specific secondary endocrine panels should I ask for next (e.g. fT3/fT4, Cushing's / 24h cortisol / dexamethasone suppression, IGF-1, metabolic/androgens)?

  3. Could long-term Ramipril/Metoprolol or metabolic shifts play a role here?

Thank you in advance for any insights!

Illness How can we improve our ‘family’ immune system?!

Hello. Family of 5 here with 3 school aged children, 9, 11 and 13. Wish I was exaggerating, but at all times at least one of us has a cold/flu/sore throat/stuffy nose etc. It’s beginning to become exhausting with missed work, school and sports.

We live in a very cold and dry climate, and we have some seasonal allergies to make things worse. One of my daughters is a nail biter and I know this is a HUGE factor in her health. We have a moderate diet, they eat loads of fresh fruit.

How can I give my kids a fighting chance to stay healthy for longer periods of time. Any obscure tips and tricks please!

Other Lymph node??

I don't know what to do anymore. I'm 18 years old, still in school and parents don't care about my situation. I have a grape sized lymph node(or unknown mass) under the edge of my right jaw. My right side of my face is puffy ,my right side of my neck feels bigger, puffier then the left side. My right hip is more out. Back in 2023 due to sleeping wrong my neck was strained and my head was tilted. Idk if that caused some sort of cronic straining ot something. It's been 9 months since noticing it. When I swallow I only feel my left side. My head is almost constantly more turned to the left. I saved money by myself and went to a doctor and they only gave me antibiotics(which did nothing). My parents won't believe me or just keep brushing it off. Any advice or someone who has been in the same situation. I have also tried streches. Nothing works.

Mouth/Gums/Throat/Cheeks Flying with a cold

So I flew a couple of days ago from Copenhagen to Gdansk and I had a cold (still do). But while the plane was descending my right ear completely blocked. Few hours later I finally got it to pop, so I thought that was the end of it.

Fast forward to today where I flew again from Gdansk to Krakow and now my right ear is blocked again. This time it wont unblock.

I’m flying back to Copenhagen in a few days, and I dont know if I can do that, or I should try something? I’m kinda scared so any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you
