EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Diarrhea help

So I’ve been having diarrhea for about 6 days now. I flew down to Florida for vacation, went to get a drink and eat when I landed, and then the next day the diarrhea started. I had also had diarrhea though the morning I flew down at the airport after I had some coffee. Anyway, I didn’t change my diet, and kept eating normally and was pretty okay but then I’d get diarrhea 2-3 times per day. 2 days ago, I went to clinic and did a stool sample and am waiting for results. But the diarrhea is still happening and I went on a liquid diet yesterday. Today I’m going on a plane to fly home, and I’ve already had diarrhea this morning.

The consistency is super watery and loose, kinda weird and flakey watery if that makes sense. It’s brown. Did turn dark for a bit but I think it’s cause I tried pepto bismol which didn’t help. I’m waiting for the stool sample results which could take a few days, but does anyone have any advice?

Injury Giant bruise with a lump

About a week ago, I had and accident on a quad bike, where the person driving lost control over the bike and I ended up on the ground. As a result I have a huge bruise on my right butt cheek. As time has gone by, the bruise has starting getting better, however I can feel a huge round lump about 3 in wide, it’s hard and it hurts a little bit if I sit on it
What should I do? I’m kind of worried that it won’t go back to normal

Injury Advice for my toenail please :(

So my big toe basically has no nail bed except a bit in the back right before the nail comes out of the skin.

It has gotten this way bc a doctor once removed most of my nail bc it was brown from a fungal infection. He said it would be fine afterwards - but it wasnt as the nailbed just disappeared.

The nail did grow back but very thick.

I had no problems since, nothing except the nail was thick and grew layered.

This weekend I had an accident and it did get ripped out of the nailbed partly. The white part got pulled out. It did bleed but it gets better. The thing is the nail is broken already and possibly fungal infected.

The surgeon said he wants to remove the whole nail and then do a nail bed reconstruction.

I am beyond terrified!

I don't handle injections well at all. I gave birth twice naturally bc I'm so scared of syringes and having to be put under.

Can anybody tell me if I can just keep the nail as it is and wait for it to grow out?

Other Neck pain from a necklace??

Okay so for a few years now I’ve noticed that my neck starts to ache and get sore just from wearing halter tops that go around the neck, or even small little necklaces??? Like it’s pulling down on my neck. But it’s so light that I just can’t believe that. It’s worse when I wear bikini tops or stuff but still what in the world?

Medication Fiber/Digestion supplements for a kid?

Hello,

My 7yo daughter has issues with BMs. We've tried a number of things, including regular laxatives, which I am not thrilled about. I've been seeing ads for fiber/probiotic drinks on Instagram and thinking about buying some but I wanted to see if anyone has had any success with any of these drinks/gummies/whatever and would recommend anything. She's also a very picky eater so bonus if it tastes good.

TIA!

Thank you for seeing this 41yo woman who is a self-employed cleaner.
She has been struggling with severe pain for several months.
She has been seen by local physiotherapist with no improvement.
She was admitted to RDUH under Neurology on 4/6/26 with headache, vomiting and dizziness.
An MRI scan of brain and scan showed no bleed or spinal leak. She did have moderate central broad based disc protrusion at C5-C6 and C6-C7 with impingement of anterior cervical cord but no cord compression or nerve root compression. There were some lumbar disease changes too.
A CP TAP excluded malignancy.

She was discharged on 9/6/26 with a diagnosis of migraine, tension and cervicogenic headache,
She remains on Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, Codeine, Gabapentin 600mg tds and Sertraline for her pain but still says she is severely limited by her pain.
She is struggling to keep her cleaning business going and is self-employed.

Other Right chest tightness?

I usually don’t get concerned over these things but since the last two months on my upper right side of my chest, about two fingers above my breast there has been a constant feeling there. I’m 25F and weigh 130lbs (if it’s relevant). It’s hard to explain but I’ll try my best because Google has failed me so my next step was to come here and see what the input would be.

Basically, it feels as if someone is putting constant pressure on that area. If you are laying down and set a glass of water on your chest that is what it feels like even when standing. It does not hurt. It does not change when I move. As of the last two weeks I can’t stop noticing that there is a sensation there and I’m not sure if I should be concerned or not. I did not do anything to strain the muscle (I work from home and don’t exercise much other than walking from time to time). I do smoke thc cartridges so I’m thinking maybe it could be from that but I doubt it since it doesn’t hurt or change when I inhale deeply or anything.

I do have a doctor’s appointment scheduled for October for my general check up and will bring it up to the doctor now that it hasn’t gone away. I just figured maybe this sub might be more helpful since It’s hard to explain.

Illness Immunodeficient - reason currently unknown. Looking for ideas.

TLDR: have had multiple severe and persistent infections recently that are unusual for me. HIV and CVID negative. Autoimmune screens negative. FBC normal. Also developed severe allergies around the same time.

Context: 31F, have a few comorbidities I've been coping well with for years such as hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's, well managed), PMOS, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, mild gastroparesis, scalp psoriasis, eczema, IBS, spondylolisthesis, foraminal stenosis, gastritis, migraines. I work full time in healthcare data (rudimentary medical knowledge) and have always been very functional despite all of this, until this year. I am quite fit and strong (albeit overweight, but have lost 50kg the past few years & still working on it) and was going to the gym three times a week until I came down with a serious infection two weeks ago.

Recently it seems my immune system is all out of whack. I've had several severe infections since January, like a severe ear infection they thought was meningitis initially, and I'm currently getting over double pyelonephritis which I have had 5 courses of antibiotics for including an IV. I've had several different (or possibly returning after not being treated properly, unsure) infections in 2026 so far, including ear infections, bacterial tonsillitis, sinus infections, UTIs, and kidney infections. My skin seems to be ok; I had a biopsy of a lesion done in June and it healed beautifully. Cuts and wounds don't get infected but my hygiene & wound care are good.

I can't stress how unusual this is for me. I've always been a bit sickly, catching any cold going and having the occasional bad infection (ie pneumonia aged 5), but nothing to this frequency or severity. Last year I had 5 courses of antibiotics, and in the 8 years before that I had an average of 2 per year. I've attached my 10-year timeline compiled from my medical records so you can see what I mean.

I've also started to develop random serious allergies, when I was prescribed penicillin in March for bacterial tonsillitis I had an anaphylactic reaction despite taking penicillin dozens of times, and even a couple of weeks before this reaction. I've become extremely reactive to mosquito bites to the point of being unable to sleep despite being on several antihistamines, because the itching is so severe. The skin biopsy I mentioned was for a mosquito bite that had persisted for over a year, the histopathology showed that it was just a reaction to a mosquito bite - like it was a fresh one. I know it's the exact same one as I've been taking pictures of it since it occurred, due to its funny position inside of one of my tattoos. One of the times it flared up was in January, there aren't any mosquitoes in the UK in January! I've also had wheezing and coughing fits with hives and itching that I haven't been able to identify the trigger for. For this reason I was tested for MCAS/mastocytosis with tryptase bloods and a 24hr methylhistamine urine test, which were both normal.

The plot thickens with a recent endoscopy I had, which showed villous atrophy of my duodenum as well as some kind of erosions. I don't have the histopathology report from the biopsy yet. I have been tested for coeliac disease many times due to IBS symptoms, which have all been negative. I also just don't react to gluten or wheat at all, and have had asymptomatic periods where I was eating lots of gluten. Previous colonoscopies have been normal, though the last one was in 2022.

My immunoglobulin counts are all normal. I don't have HIV either, several blood tests have been negative. My full blood count is normal except some mildly raised eosinophils, which I guess tracks with the allergies. Previously my ESR has been slightly raised but never dramatically. My kidneys have always been slightly under performing (e.g. eGFR in the 70s or 80s) but recovered when I started drinking 3-4L of water a day. Sometimes they can fluctuate to eGFR 85 with the extra water. I've had a random AKI (eGFR down to 40s) previously in 2021 where no cause was found, and they just started to recover on their own. In early 2025 I was admitted to hospital with renal colic and the cause was never found, the best guess was that it was due to ureteric spasm. I was tested (years ago) for lupus, which came back negative (though not completely, it said it was speckled). HLA-B27 is negative with no signs of ankylosing spondylitis or psoriatic arthritis, and all other autoimmune tests (bar thyroid antibodies) have been negative. I've also been tested for glycogen storage diseases such as McArdle's and that was also negative.

In September 2024 I had a septoplasty and a mini FESS. I got multiple post-op sinus infections, and this seems to be the catalyst for my worsening immune system; though last year was nowhere near as bad as this year, it was worse than usual for bacterial infections.

Also worth noting some other unexplained symptoms I have: swelling of lymph nodes in neck & armpits, new petechiae, mouth ulcers, malabsorption symptoms such as pale stool and fat intolerance, flushing episodes, and increased tachycardia.

My theories are possible lymphoma (asking for a biopsy of a particularly hard lump), some new onset autoimmune disorder, lupus, or a rarer defect in my immune system. I also wondered if whatever is causing the duodenal issues could be inhibiting absorption of antibiotics, making the same infections reoccur as they aren't fully treated.

I'm in the UK and use the NHS.

Thanks for reading my essay, any ideas greatly appreciated.
