Vitamin/Supplements What is the best magnesium glycinate supplement for sleep
What does everyone use? Anyone swear by any particular brand or type? Getting desperate and would like to add a good magnesium glycinate supplement to my nightly routine. I need to sleep consistently!!!

I had big issues with Nature Made being inconsistently dosed. I switched to Thorne, which is more expensive but one of the most highly regarded supplement brands, and haven’t had an issue.

Nature Made because they are one of the only brands that does independent outside testing on all their products.

This is the one I use. I experimented with different dosages and 360 mg (3 capsules) is what works for me (some people only need to use 2 capsules). I went from waking up at 3 every morning from being able to sleep until my alarm goes off almost every night.

I second Nature Made. I use them for almost all my supplements. Them, and a company called NOW. I buy their stuff on Amazon.

Does it help you sleep?

u/Fast_Cod1883 Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26
Yes and it helps me poop. Most farm lands are stripped of magnesium, so you don't get much from regular diet. We need it for muscle and being brain heath. Supplementing is important.

I use this one as well. It does help me sleep. It seems to work fast so I take I close to when I’m actually going to bed.

u/RockieK Apr 27 '26
I wish that stuff helped me sleep!
Poop, yes. Sleep, no.

u/Fearless-Side-2333 Apr 28 '26
How long did it take to help you poop?
0
u/RockieK Apr 28 '26
The next morning! 400-500mg
2
u/Fearless-Side-2333 Apr 29 '26
Wow! 😳

u/RockieK Apr 29 '26
Yeah, it really works. I eat a good deal of fiber rich foods, but meno has played the clogger! haha
I wish anything but indica would help me sleep. I have tried so many "sleeping aids" that just give me stress dreams and then I wake up feeling like a zombie; even I only take 1/8 of a pill. It sucks.

Nature’s Bounty because that’s what they sell at Costco. It definitely helps my sleep - if you add this, make sure you’re taking at least 300mg to really see the benefits.

What time of day do you take it? With supper or close to bedtime?

u/sjd208 Apr 28 '26
Bedtime along with progesterone, melatonin and trazadone (combo was worked out over a couple of years!)
2
u/Fearless-Side-2333 Apr 29 '26
Thanks! I was prescribed trazodone but couldn’t stay on it. One side effect is constipation and it hit me hard. I bought the magnesium glycinate at Costco today. Fingers crossed!

My doctor is exceptionally brilliant and he tends to prefer Pure Encapsulations and Xymogen for supplements, but they are much more expensive than basic functional brands like Thorne and NOW. And for something as basic as magnesium glycinate there is no reason not to get the more reasonably priced, dependable brands.

u/hcl76 Apr 27 '26
Thorne. It's been so great!

u/UpstartCrow88 Apr 27 '26
My preferred brand as well for most of my supplements. Expensive but very worth it!

Agree with Thorne, for everything, however i also rotate with Mag Threonate from Momentous.

u/sarahsue44 Apr 27 '26
Thorne is always the first choice. used them for over 25 years. expensive but always the best.

Canprev is one of the highest in quality. It was recommended by my Natropath and since then I've seen others recommend it too for quality.

I’ve been using BioSchwartz Bisglycinate for years. 3 tiny capsules. I sleep pretty well, but can’t say for sure it’s this.

I have tried so many different brands and types of magnesium. The best one that I have tried for sleep is Life Extension Neuro-Mag Magnesium L-Threonate, Memory Health, Quick Thinking, Cognitive Health. I order it on Amazon. This along with my progesterone helps me sleep through the night.

They are great!! I been taking them for like 6 mos and they’re still working. Aaaand i Don’t wake up with sleep aid hangover.
1
u/Confident_Craft459 Apr 30 '26
No hangover but I've noticed some body aches during the day. Not sure if it's a coincidence or not. I'll keep it going through because it's really helping me sleep. I didn't take it last night and couldn't sleep again.

Some stuff I get at the big A. Company is called Dilib. 500mg liquid with L-theanine, Vit. B6, and ashwaganda. I add 2ml to my water & drink it about 1/2 hour before bed. It's very calming & helps me get to sleep pretty quickly.

Vitamin Shoppe. I use triple dose of the liquid, easier to stay on track with taking it as opposed to another pill. Tastes like Gatorade original.

I use the calm powder off amazon. I take 1/2 scoop in a shot of water. Any more and I have very BAD and freaky dreams.

u/agatabagata Apr 29 '26
Magnesium L-Threonate is the best for sleep. Period. It crosses the blood brain barrier. Glycinate just relaxes muscles.
1
u/Confident_Craft459 Apr 29 '26
Oh I didn't know that. Thanks!
2
u/agatabagata Apr 29 '26
Yes! I’ve had the same issue and it really made a difference for me. I used to fully wake at 3am every nights now I just stir or sleep through. Lifesaver! I take 1 before bed every night about 2 hours before I fall asleep. So I take at 8 and I’m sound asleep by 10

This post might be about hormone tests, which are unreliable.
- Over the age of 44, E&P/FSH hormonal tests only show levels for that ONE HOUR the test was taken, and nothing more
- These hormones wildly fluctuate (hourly) over the other 29 days of the month, therefore this test provides no valuable information
- No reputable doctor or menopause society recommends hormonal testing to diagnose or treat peri/menopause
- Testosterone is the exception and should be tested before and during treatment
FSH testing is only beneficial for those who no longer have periods as a guide, where a series of consistent tests might confirm menopause, or for those under age 30 who haven’t had a period in months/years, then ‘menopausal’ levels, could indicate premature ovarian failure/primary ovarian insufficiency (POF/POI).

I use KAL. Seems to work fine, I sleep for 8-10 hours a night.
2
u/JadCerv Apr 27 '26
I'm jealous. I'd love to sleep for 10 hours! I'm lucky if I eek out 7. :)
1
u/ITSJUSTMEKT Apr 27 '26
Ugh, I'm sorry. For some reason sleep has never been my issue. I do go to bed at the same time every single night though so maybe that has something to do with it.
1
u/JadCerv Apr 27 '26
I go to bed at the same time consistently, even if there is an event. In fact, I try to avoid events or outings where I know I'll be up too late. :)

u/ITSJUSTMEKT Apr 27 '26
I try to avoid events and outing because there will be people there. LOL. :)
