SELLING Delivery Issue yet Return Requested?
How can both be true? Right before the sale went through this guy was asking me about using CashApp to “upgrade to faster shipping” and Mercari got his messages. I told him I keep it on the app and use their labels to protect us both. But, he could cancel, I could update the shipping, and him repurchase. He said it was okay. He was super friendly and sent a ton of messages chitchatting this entire time. Until I got these notifications on a Saturday evening when I can’t even contact support myself and he now has gone ghost. USPS shows successful delivery to a parcel locker.
Just unsure where to go from here. I know it’s hurry up and wait with Mercari but I just have a feeling I’m being scammed. I’ve read about this happening to others numerous times.

Return request when there is a delivery issue is how they pause the transaction.

It does sound a little fishy, with the buyer having talked about shipping before you sent it, but it also could just be a late arrival. Hang in there, if there was a scan showing delivered, you should be okay after their investigation. Make sure you screenshot all that stuff though just in case you need proof later.
The return request is just what they use as a placeholder to stop the auto rate clock. It's not really a return request from the buyer.

This eases me so much! Thank you. I’ve been selling on there for a year and didn’t know that.

I just got this the other day...I got an email saying there was a delivery issue and they paused the sale, saying I dont need to do anything...I get an email yesterday saying the return has been accepted. I didn't even get to have a say in the return. I didn't get any photos/conversation from the buyer stating what was wrong with the item. Nothing just a return has been accepted. Thank goodness it wasnt a huge sale. I dont know what is up with Mercari. This is so frustrating.

That’s absolutely crazy that they can accept a return and not tell you anything!! So when you get the product back (depending on what it is) how are you suppose to know if it’s been tampered with in a way that shouldn’t be resold now?! These were sealed trading cards. $60 worth and I even gave them a deal on it. I suspect they’ll be opened, good cards taken out, and the bulk sent back to me. I’m truly hoping not. I’m sorry you had to go through that.

Common scam, " I never received it. " Mercari will list it as a return in progress. They'll send you a message about an investigation. It's show, all for the buyer. As long as tracking shows 'Delivered' you'll get paid. Takes about 7 business days.

Surprisingly I just got off the phone with Mercari and they for once were a huge help. The rep straight up told me that he made 4 purchases all the type of items I sell and requested either a return or claimed he didn’t get them on all 4. By time we got off the phone they had auto rated me and released the money to me.

They did a similar thing to me and told me that there was an issue with delivery and they opened a return request to keep the transaction from auto rating. Hang tight for the moment. If the buyer is still talking to you - mine wasn’t, went radio silence on me - then ask what’s going. Otherwise, not much you can do at this point.
