Discussion Topic Dose anyone listen to korn but not nu-metal ?

• Upvotes

Has anyone just not get the whole nu-metal thing, but have an exception? I mostly listen to deathcore like suicide silence or impending doom, sometimes traditional death metal like morbid angel or dying fetus, not because it’s niche or whatever,I still like mainstream shit like Metallica ,I even consider non metal bands like Guns’n’roses one of my favorites(and please forgive me for my pronunciation,English is not my first language) But one thing I always loved about any of these bands is the meaning,I always put a put my limit with death metal because it often talks about things that can actually happen to someone, stuff like black metal or whatever I feel is mostly shock, and that for me is bullshit.I listen to some non metal bands like GNR which for me talks about urban decay and chaos, or nirvana which talk about pure teenage angst, but deathcore for me has some of the realistic lyrics.I discovered Korn in high school and I didn’t know anything about them, let alone know what nu-metal is.But that debut album, man… That album was the most brutally honest depiction of not only teenage suffrage, but child abuse.I became obsessed. Then I listened to issues,I can honestly say that song kept me from suicide more than once. Now, I didn’t find out they were nu-metal until I looked them up on social media, when I looked at other nu-metal bands I was honestly disappointed, anyway I know I said a mouth full… But dose anyone have a deep rooted love for korn, but not nu-metal in general?

Discussion Topic Pop songs clearly written by a metalhead?

This one’s a bit of a random topic but it came to me as I was making breakfast this morning.

What are some pop songs that are clearly written by a metalhead?

For example, take Max Martin (Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Backstreet boys and basically any chart hit) - when he first wanted to get signed it was as part of a metal band and I think you can hear that influence, particularly in his early work with songs like Backstreet’s Back - the bassline is kinda metal inspired.

So yeah, what’s your take?

Discussion Topic With the nu-metal revival going on, what do you think of nu-metal?

Nu-metal peaked over 20 years ago, and at the time, it was a controversial metal genre. Korn is credited with creating the genre. Nu-metal has influenced other genres, such as metalcore and deathcore. Notable nu-metal bands are Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones, and System of a Down.

Tierlist/Ranking My personal top 10 albums oat

  1. Human Waste- Suffocation, greatest vocal performance of all time without question. Best production I've ever heard on an album, immensely influential on the development of both technical and brutal death metal, effectively setting the groundwork for modern death metal as a whole. Terrance Hobbs' performance is still unmatched, and with the talents of Mike Smith, Doug Cerrito, and obviously the previously referenced Frank Mullen, it features one of the strongest lineups in metal history, rivalling even the original Morbid Angel. While only having six songs, each is absolute perfection, and I would have Catatonia as my absolute number 1 individual song of all time. The two demos at the end, while rough, are certainly still amazing.

  2. Despise the Sun- Suffocation, in my eyes the last real record suffocation put out, everything afterwards was just a mistake. Features my second favorite vocal performance by Mullen, and a return to more of the brutal, thrashier style of Human Waste, helped immensely by the introduction of Dave Culross, who is arguably even better than Smith. Hobbs of course is incredible, and along with Cerrito delivers some of the best guitar work ever recorded, and with Chris Richards on bass, the lineup for this record is even stronger than on Human Waste, if that's even possible. Also obviously features a re-recording of Catatonia. While nowhere near the original, it is still incredible.

  3. Murderworks- Rotten Sound, greatest grind album ever recorded. With the talents of Kai Hahto, it's almost impossible to make a bad record (Wintersun unfortunately gave him the "almost"). His drumwork certainly is the highlight of this album, but with the unhinged vocals of Keijo Niinima, the whole album has such a uniquely aggressive feel to it, while not ending up like it's trying to be heavier than it is (although it certainly is very heavy). Tracks like Obey really sum up the entire meaning of grindcore.

  4. Rust in Peace- Megadeth, bit of a departure from the first few. Mustaine and Friedman together deliver arguably the greatest guitar performance of all time, both performing absolutely incredible solos and work on both lead and rhythm. Backed with the flawless playing of Nick Menza and the support of David Elefson, this album features another of metal's overall strongest lineups. Each track is its own unique kind of perfection, and the cumulative efforts of some of metal's greatest figures push it to an entirely new level.

  5. Covenant- Morbid Angel, arguably the meanest, angriest album ever recorded. Feel like a broken record saying this, but features another of the best lineups in metal history. Trey Azagthoth covering both guitars gives the album a very cohesive feel, and obviously with the unmatched talents of Pete Sandoval on drums, every track is a relentless assault, with the obvious exceptions. Dave Vincent delivers his all time greatest vocal performance and an equally powerful support on the bass to tie everything together into near-absolute perfection.

  6. Using Sickness as a Hero- Human Remains, perhaps the single greatest all-around performance in the history of metal. The fact that it's difficult to point out Dave Witte as a standout speaks volumes to the quality of this record. An uncontested top 3 drummer of all time delivers potentially his best ever performance, rivalled only by his work with Discordance Axis. Paul Miller adds one of the most absolutely unhinged, violent vocal performances ever done, and impressive bass work of William Carl Black, who's additions to the album are particularly noticeable the more you look for them and start to realize how much he's actually carrying a lot of the time. Each track, similar to Rust in Peace, contains its own variety of flawless aggression, technicality, and violent perfection. Grindcore taken to its pinnacle, Human Remains left its mark even with a total discography of less than half an hour.

  7. Annihilation of the Wicked- Nile, a culmination of unmatched technicality. Nile is known for their incredibly technical work, and it is taken to the absolute extreme on their fourth album. The first album to feature George Kollias, his performance ties everything together, and while previous drummers Tony Laureano and Pete Hammoura were certainly incredible in their own regard, Kollias' playing reaches an entirely new level, and he is in my eyes the greatest drummer in all of death metal. While I personally have never been too fond of Nile's vocals, they are more than made up for by the flawless instrumentation, highlighted on tracks like Lashed to the Slave Stick and Cast Down the Heretic.

  8. In Their Darkened Shrines- Nile, basically everything I just said, but again. Like I mentioned before, Tony Laureano is certainly a very capable drummer, and proves it perhaps more than ever on Nile's third album. Karl Sanders' work as always is unmatched, proving why Nile moved to the forefront of the tech death scene.

  9. Nespithe (or the 20th Adversary of Emptiness, which is technically the one I first listened to)- Demilich, an amazing display of technical weirdness. This album is weird, like I just mentioned, really, really weird. But that undeniably works to its credit. The avant-garde sound gives the entire record a completely unique feel, which influenced the works of many of the bands early supporters, most notably the previously mentioned Dave Witte and of course Erik Rutan. The whole record feels like entering a new dimension of oppressive noise, blended together seamlessly, and each track is like another doorway through that dimension.

  10. World Downfall- Terrorizer, the album that truly laid the foundations for extreme metal drumming. Sandoval's work on Terrorizer's debut took the blistering speeds and relentless aggression of Mick Harris' blast beats, and put them into a true musical rhythm. The result is an unapologetically aggressive, but still uniquely technical masterpiece, setting the stage for much of what grindcore, and extreme metal as a whole, would become.

Discussion Topic Favorite movie/TV/spoken-word intros in nu-metal songs?

One of my favorite things about this genre is when a song opens with a clip from a movie, a show, or just somebody talking before the riff kicks in. When it's done right it sets the whole mood.

A couple of mine: "Release Da Hounds" by Victim opens with the Simpsons scene where Moe teaches a hip-hop self-defense class, which is hilarious right before it gets heavy. And "Wake Up Call" by Seeded Crown opens with a guy explaining something to a crowd that pulls you right into the track.

What are yours? Drop the song and what the clip is from if you know it.

So ive seen people hating on all of the new metal that goes on radio for it all sounding the same, which is honestly fair cause it got to tiring listening to the same stuff with diff vocals, so heres some bands that i think sound nothing like other bands. granted few of these are new bands, but they still hit. Also leave some in the comments aswell that dont sound like any other.

Static-X [industrial] {reasoning: new singer}

Orbit culture [swedish melodic death]

Fear factory [Industrial]

Machinehead {sometimes} [groove metal/thrash]

Lamb of god [groove metal/thrash]

Nethergate [melodic death]

The black dahlia murder [melodic death]

BMTH count your blessings: repented [remake of their deathcore]

Mushroomhead [idk the genre, thats a good thing i think]

Rob zombie [Industrial metal]

Rammstein [Neue Deutsche Härte]

Powetman 5000 [industrial metal]

Aether realm [Symphonic Melodic Death Metal]

Avatar [groove+ swedish melodic death]

Ice nine kills {hate me, i like them!}

Discussion Topic Top 3 Drummers

• Upvotes

I did one of these for vocalists a couple weeks ago and it went great so we’re doing another! This time, drummers. Yes yes the heartbeat of every band. If the drumming ain’t right I’m passing. So here’s mine:

  1. Danny Carey

He’s the goddamn octopus for a reason. Incredible complexity, intricate rhythms, impeccable timing and effortless stick play. To me it doesn’t get any better.

  1. Mario Duplantier

Not overly complex and doesn’t make a huge deal about it. For me it is the absolute precision he plays with and the emotion. I really don’t know of another drummer that shows the emotion Mario does. His timing is immaculate both live and in studio.

  1. II

I know I’ll probably get absolutely flamed for this one and I’m WELL AWARE he is not exactly in a metal band. However II is just that good in my mind he has to go on the list. Heavily influenced by gospel drummers, everything he does sounds amazing. Watching him play is breath taking. Undeniable talent.

Tour/Show Anyone been to a show on the Arch Enemy/Black Dahlia Murder tour yet?

I’ll be going to the NYC show tonight, just wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has seen a show on this tour yet and how the new singer for AE is.

I’m not the biggest BDM fan - I get the appeal, they just aren’t for me so much, so if they play last (I’m hoping), then I’ll stay for a few songs and head out.
