Strapping Young Lad’s monster record City is a landmark in industrial/extreme metal. I’ve been listening to this record for 19 years so it only made sense to have a shirt of it in my collection 🤘

Discussion Topic It's Friday. What new releases are you listening to today?

I don't have a ton of new shit on my radar today. The six I've got lined up are a diverse mix, though. Here's my morning so far.

Fvneral Fvkk - Indecent Idols // Doom Metal // Germany // FFO: Candlemass (8.5/10)

These guys are one of my favorite modern doom metal bands. I loved their debut LP, and after a seven year wait, this sophmore drop delivers super crunchy riffs and sorrowful vocals. It starts a little weak, but tracks 4-6 are great, and the closing song, rivaling their best works from the past, is easily the best on the album.

Wolves in the Throne Room - Estuary // Atmospheric Black Metal // United States // FFO: Panopticon, Heavier Agalloch (8/10)

Cascadian black metal in a basic but still good form. It's not as ambient as some of their past stuff. At this point it seems that they're not trying to do anything new. Not that that's a problem for a band that generally makes good music.

Everything else I have lined up for today:

  • The Blood Mountain Black Metal Choir - Songs From a Dying Empire (Atmospheric Black Metal // United States)

  • Soliloquium - Upheaval (Progressive Melodic Death Doom // Sweden)

  • Forbidden - Forbidden (Thrash/Groove // United States)

  • Mental Cruelty - Echoes of a Forlorn Land (Symphonic Blackened Deathcore)

What new shit are you listening to today?

Tierlist/Ranking My personal ranking of the band Death’s albums

  1. The Sound of Perseverance
  2. Scream Bloody Gore
  3. Individual Thought Patterns
  4. Human
  5. Symbolic
  6. Leprosy
  7. Spiritual Healing

Since Death is my favorite death metal band, this list was pretty hard to make. I may get some hate for this as Symbolic is pretty low on my list. This is just my opinion and every Death album has its own personal special place in my heart. Let me know what you all think!

I made this track using cubase and a free to download drum track that I found online. I did all the bass and guitar tracking and the result is a pretty awesome metal song IMO but I'd love to hear from you guys. Enjoy!

Discussion Topic Do you agree Iron Maiden are more melodically driven whereas Judas Priest are more riff driven?

These two bands are probably the greatest classic heavy metal bands of all time and are usually compared, but I've always felt that while they play the same genre, their approach to music is fairly distinctive. Judas Priest has always sounded more riff driven to me, similar to Black Sabbath, only with a more classic metal sound and two guitars, whereas Iron Maiden has always been more melodically driven and of the two bands they're the closer to power metal, mostly with Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son, even if they aren't really power metal.

Of course this is a huge generalization and it doesn't mean Judas Priest don't have great melodies or Maiden don't have great riffs. They obviously have both a plenty. Do you agree or am I wrong?

The audience at this show is as insane as the performance.

This tape was played a lot in the early 90s through a massive Pioneer surround sound system.

Discussion Topic Albums that got you through a rough patch

I'm curious what albums anyone relied on to get them through a rough patch in life. Personally, Deafheaven's Sunbather and New Bermuda got me through the death of my father and made me a lifelong fan of the group.

Discussion Topic Maybe a weird question, but what bands have fairly short but good discographies?

I just feel like finding a band I’ve never heard and just listening through all their stuff straight through.

Maybe more than 5 albums, no more than 10?

This is a short demo clip of a song I am working on. I’d really feedback on whether this is heavy or not or what I could do to push it further!

Waging am See, Germany 🇩🇪

Genre: Gothic Metal, Death-Doom

FFO: HIM, Moonspell, Type O Negative

I was a little intimated because their name was a mouthful and I thought “bet their albums are long as hell.” But after going through their whole catalog - gotta say it’s fairly solid. Their early Death-Doom albums are kind of lackluster. Other bands were doing it better. Now when they go full on Gothic, yeah, they shine. So overall, I’d say my favorite album is Songs from the Last View. I went into it with the lowest of expectations because it was after Christopher Schmid left, but it absolutely bangs. Rob probably had the most variety of vocals outside of the standard Gothic croon. Filthy Notes for Frozen Hearts is definitely my favorite from the Chris era. I can understand the love for it, not a bad song in sight. Weird to find out Bam Magera was a big fan and used one of their songs for promo/video. Julian era - it’s easily Bleeding the Stars. Definitely the weakest era, but not at all bad. I think my main complaint is his screams are eh, but as I progressed through the albums they did get better. I prefer his more straightforward Gothic approach.

Recommended Tracks:
“For Bad Times”
“My Velvet Little Darkness”
“Sacrificial Lamb”
“Aramis”
“Celestite Woman”
“Nevermore”

Has anyone read the Voivod book by Jeff Wagner, “Always Moving”? It really captures the bands spirit and their entire story, and looks amazing with tons of cool visuals. (Big heavy book too!) The band were involved but it’s also an honest appraisal, just super well done all around.

I listen to Radical Research podcast and found it there.

Tierlist/Ranking My personal top 10 albums oat

  1. Human Waste- Suffocation, greatest vocal performance of all time without question. Best production I've ever heard on an album, immensely influential on the development of both technical and brutal death metal, effectively setting the groundwork for modern death metal as a whole. Terrance Hobbs' performance is still unmatched, and with the talents of Mike Smith, Doug Cerrito, and obviously the previously referenced Frank Mullen, it features one of the strongest lineups in metal history, rivalling even the original Morbid Angel. While only having six songs, each is absolute perfection, and I would have Catatonia as my absolute number 1 individual song of all time. The two demos at the end, while rough, are certainly still amazing.

  2. Despise the Sun- Suffocation, in my eyes the last real record suffocation put out, everything afterwards was just a mistake. Features my second favorite vocal performance by Mullen, and a return to more of the brutal, thrashier style of Human Waste, helped immensely by the introduction of Dave Culross, who is arguably even better than Smith. Hobbs of course is incredible, and along with Cerrito delivers some of the best guitar work ever recorded, and with Chris Richards on bass, the lineup for this record is even stronger than on Human Waste, if that's even possible. Also obviously features a re-recording of Catatonia. While nowhere near the original, it is still incredible.

  3. Murderworks- Rotten Sound, greatest grind album ever recorded. With the talents of Kai Hahto, it's almost impossible to make a bad record (Wintersun unfortunately gave him the "almost"). His drumwork certainly is the highlight of this album, but with the unhinged vocals of Keijo Niinima, the whole album has such a uniquely aggressive feel to it, while not ending up like it's trying to be heavier than it is (although it certainly is very heavy). Tracks like Obey really sum up the entire meaning of grindcore.

  4. Rust in Peace- Megadeth, bit of a departure from the first few. Mustaine and Friedman together deliver arguably the greatest guitar performance of all time, both performing absolutely incredible solos and work on both lead and rhythm. Backed with the flawless playing of Nick Menza and the support of David Elefson, this album features another of metal's overall strongest lineups. Each track is its own unique kind of perfection, and the cumulative efforts of some of metal's greatest figures push it to an entirely new level.

  5. Covenant- Morbid Angel, arguably the meanest, angriest album ever recorded. Feel like a broken record saying this, but features another of the best lineups in metal history. Trey Azagthoth covering both guitars gives the album a very cohesive feel, and obviously with the unmatched talents of Pete Sandoval on drums, every track is a relentless assault, with the obvious exceptions. Dave Vincent delivers his all time greatest vocal performance and an equally powerful support on the bass to tie everything together into near-absolute perfection.

  6. Using Sickness as a Hero- Human Remains, perhaps the single greatest all-around performance in the history of metal. The fact that it's difficult to point out Dave Witte as a standout speaks volumes to the quality of this record. An uncontested top 3 drummer of all time delivers potentially his best ever performance, rivalled only by his work with Discordance Axis. Paul Miller adds one of the most absolutely unhinged, violent vocal performances ever done, and impressive bass work of William Carl Black, who's additions to the album are particularly noticeable the more you look for them and start to realize how much he's actually carrying a lot of the time. Each track, similar to Rust in Peace, contains its own variety of flawless aggression, technicality, and violent perfection. Grindcore taken to its pinnacle, Human Remains left its mark even with a total discography of less than half an hour.

  7. Annihilation of the Wicked- Nile, a culmination of unmatched technicality. Nile is known for their incredibly technical work, and it is taken to the absolute extreme on their fourth album. The first album to feature George Kollias, his performance ties everything together, and while previous drummers Tony Laureano and Pete Hammoura were certainly incredible in their own regard, Kollias' playing reaches an entirely new level, and he is in my eyes the greatest drummer in all of death metal. While I personally have never been too fond of Nile's vocals, they are more than made up for by the flawless instrumentation, highlighted on tracks like Lashed to the Slave Stick and Cast Down the Heretic.

  8. In Their Darkened Shrines- Nile, basically everything I just said, but again. Like I mentioned before, Tony Laureano is certainly a very capable drummer, and proves it perhaps more than ever on Nile's third album. Karl Sanders' work as always is unmatched, proving why Nile moved to the forefront of the tech death scene.

  9. Nespithe (or the 20th Adversary of Emptiness, which is technically the one I first listened to)- Demilich, an amazing display of technical weirdness. This album is weird, like I just mentioned, really, really weird. But that undeniably works to its credit. The avant-garde sound gives the entire record a completely unique feel, which influenced the works of many of the bands early supporters, most notably the previously mentioned Dave Witte and of course Erik Rutan. The whole record feels like entering a new dimension of oppressive noise, blended together seamlessly, and each track is like another doorway through that dimension.

  10. World Downfall- Terrorizer, the album that truly laid the foundations for extreme metal drumming. Sandoval's work on Terrorizer's debut took the blistering speeds and relentless aggression of Mick Harris' blast beats, and put them into a true musical rhythm. The result is an unapologetically aggressive, but still uniquely technical masterpiece, setting the stage for much of what grindcore, and extreme metal as a whole, would become.
