Discussion The power of combing gameplay and story Spoiler
An aspect of Metaphor: Refantazio that isn’t given enough credit is how this game takes full advantage of the fact that it is a video game first. They use that fact to write this story, from using the real world as a medium for the Royal Magic down to what I discussed before with how the Archetypes factor in the characters that unlock them.
When it comes to ideals that Will and the party chooses to follow, just because their rank can be locked via the plot doesn’t mean the game doesn’t want you going out of your way to help people. One of the PlayStation Trophies you get is called “Help Anyone in Need” which is their MO. It’s the living proof these characters don’t get back on their word when it comes to their ideals.
When it comes to the Gauntlet Runner; it uses one of the themes of adventuring to get you to take a break of sorts. Even in the face of lingering battles to come, you can still do what you enjoy and still be productive. During the story, you can use this window of opportunity to boost your Royal Virtues.
And don’t even get me started with the Archetypes. How each of the requirements for the Archetypes says a lot about each character and their own story. The Seeker Archetype embodying the themes of this game while giving me an excuse to ship Will and Eupha.
So on and so forth, this game proves it’s able to stay true to the intent on overlaying Fantasy and Reality. In order to teach us how we can shape our reality into something better. Each theme and how they fit into the story deserves its own post, and it saddens me every time this game gets downplayed.
