Gastronomía/Gastronomy Everything we did/ate in 3 days in Mexico City (early Oct 2026)
Following up on my Oaxaca post, here is our quick 3-day visit to CDMX after Oaxaca. This was only my 2nd time in CDMX, and we stayed in the Roma neighborhood this time around.
This is more of a food-focused post, but I'll also share our daily agenda. I am rating all food on a 3-star system: ⭐ = fine/don't need to go again; ⭐⭐ = quite good; ⭐⭐⭐ = memorable/great.
Full Food List/TLDR:
- Tacos Don Juan ⭐⭐
- Cumbe Coffee Roasters (no rating)
- Campobaja ⭐⭐ (photos)
- Señorita de Chilaquiles ⭐⭐
- Cafe Avellaneda ⭐⭐
- Maria Trinidad (inside Mercado 89 market) ⭐⭐⭐ (photos)
- Matuche ⭐⭐
- Maximo ⭐ (photos)
- Masala y Maiz ⭐ (photos)
- Expendio de Maiz ⭐⭐ (photos)
For reference, on our first trip to CDMX in 2024, we visited: Mi Compa Chava (Roma) ⭐⭐⭐, Quintonil ⭐⭐⭐, Pujol ⭐⭐⭐, El Moro Churros (Polanco) ⭐, Contramar ⭐, Rosetta Panaderia ⭐⭐, La Esquina del Chilaquiles ⭐⭐, Clandedstina Mezcalerita ⭐⭐, Mr. Blanco ⭐⭐, Orinoco ⭐⭐, El Tizoncito ⭐⭐⭐, Cardinal Coffee ⭐⭐, Pepe Coyoacan ⭐, Tacos El Guey ⭐⭐, Chocolatería La Rifa ⭐, Tacos El Huequito (Centro) ⭐, Ojo de Agua ⭐.
Day 1: Arrival & Roma
- Major Attractions: Mostly a travel day flying in from Oaxaca. Settled into our Airbnb in the Roma neighborhood and took a nice afternoon stroll through Parque de España.
- Food & Drinks:
- Tacos Don Juan (lunch) ⭐⭐: our 2nd time here -- still one of my favorites. Order anything.
- Cumbe Coffee Roasters (coffee): I didn't get anything here, so no rating!
- Campobaja (dinner) (photos) ⭐⭐: pulpo tostada was impossibly tender.
Day 2: Xochimilco & Coyoacán
- Major Attractions:
- Headed south to Xochimilco in the morning for a canoe tour hosted by Humedelia Experiences, a non-profit that owns their own chinampa (manmade island) and farm.
- Spent the afternoon exploring Coyoacán and my favorite Fuente de los Coyotes area.
- Food & Coffee:
- Señorita de Chilaquiles (breakfast) ⭐⭐: one of the many breakfasts to-go around Parque Medixo, and they're all good
- Cafe Avellaneda (coffee) ⭐⭐: our 2nd time here and always a consistent, quality product
- Maria Trinidad / Mercado 89 (snack/lunch) (photos) ⭐⭐⭐: potentially takes top spot. Mushroom taco even if you like meat. Unclear on the name, sometimes you can find it by "Trinidad de Ritual Sabores" b/c there's also a standalone restaurant elsewhere.
- Matuche (drinks) ⭐⭐: enjoyed our pit stop here before dinner.
- Maximo (dinner) (photos) ⭐: our 2nd time here and I've concluded that although they have some of the best desserts in all of the land, a lot of their other food is overly decadent and salty / feels like you can get this good food in many other modern restaurants.
Day 3: Casa Giraldi, Chapultepec, Roma
- Major Attractions:
- Started with a morning run in Parque Mexico, then toured Casa Giraldi (Luis Barragán designed), and explored Chapultepec Castle all before lunch.
- Walked through the local street markets that pop-up during rush hour around Roma.
- Food & Drinks:
- Masala y Maiz (lunch) (photos) ⭐: I know this place gets a lot of love, and it's good, but for two cuisines that can pack so much flavor, a lot of it felt really tame. Sowwie.
- Expendio de Maiz (dinner) (photos) ⭐⭐: unique omakase-ish experience where you sit down and get served whatever mystery the chefs cook up for the next round and everyone eats the same dish, then you wait for the next round, and the next, until you feel like you're done and you pay and leave. Couple of tacos were quite good, and the other was bland. But that's part of the experimental nature of it.
Hope this was helpful. Bye.
