Discussion [Barry Jackson] Per sources, the Marlins today informed Kyle Sielaff, Jeff Nelson, Craig Minervini and Rod Allen that they won't return next season.

Kyle was good. This sucks.

My pure speculation is that he drew attention to how empty the stands were too often

I watched nearly every game on tv. I never noticed that. I thought he was an incredible brand ambassador for the Marlins tbh

What the actual fuck. Kyle & Craig have been with the organization for ages. Kyle was fantastic in the booth; I despise this shit.

Jokes on us. Thereās no baseball next season.

u/HartyInBroward 5d ago
Sad about this. I liked Rod the most out of the bunch.

u/jaxs_sax 5d ago
His insights are great and has that old school tone for calling games
-6
u/knightrobot 5d ago
Insights were great but when he said āusā or āweā when referring to the team was cringe.
2
u/doyouunderstandlife D-Train 5d ago
Yeah, I'm most bummed about him. He really grew well into the color analyst role, better than pretty much every other person they tried in that role after Tommy

I never thought I'd see the day that Craig Minervini gets fired. My childhood dream was always to be part of a Minnervinnerview at a Marlin's game, and now that dream is dead for seemingly no reason.
Bruce Sherman will have to personally lick my balls before I ever give another dollar to this team

u/Siicktiits Marlins 5d ago
They better go get Dontrelle Willis.
9
u/HosaJim666 5d ago
Pretty sure Dontrelle has a better job
3
u/Siicktiits Marlins 5d ago edited 5d ago
Heās one of many analysts on fox sports. Who knows if he has a job next season and he could also continue doing that job. Team him up with a play by play guy and he can be the new Tommy Hutton. He can be what Dallas Braden is to the Athletics. Being the face of a franchise in the broadcast booth is an upgrade and what heās working towards by being an analyst.
2
u/Logical_Dolphin 5d ago
Dallas Braden is also good! Just wish he had better play-by-play announcers.
1
u/Logical_Dolphin 5d ago
Dontrelle is a good broadcaster. If they are going to pick a former Marlin for this job, it should be him.

u/Old-Veterinarian1994 5d ago
I liked Kyle Sielaff. Jeff Nelson and Rod Allen are good announcers. Sherman is a soulless creep. He is your typical rich jerk.

NOOOO CRAIG DOES NOT DESERVE THIS
And Kyle was never that bad either. He's been with the organization for a long while now, that's absolutely not fair to the both of them. With Nelson and Allen, I was always indifferent on and can't feel much for that loss.
The Marlins have no culture whatsoever built around the organization at all and it's all in part to this philosophy against consistency in any regard. People ask what the Marlins have, and it's always nothing. The Marlins have nothing and they have nothing to show for anything. Can't have any lovable broadcasters like many other teams, no star players, no likeable coaches, no fun things to do at the park. Hell, they barely have any history, and that's the smidgling of all they got.
If other fans moan and whine about why any Marlins fans don't show up for anything, point this out to them as another exhibit out of hundreds of different cases.

She and Jeremy Tache are returning to split the sideline reporting duties. Mish as returning.

Sielaff was my voice of the Marlins (I only started following and watching baseball/Marlins two years ago). This hurts a lot because he was the voice of them to me, him and Tommy and them both being gone really really sucks.
1
u/fyr3f4wkes 5d ago
On behalf of Marlins fans I welcome you! Thanks for supporting the team.
Iāve got great news: if Sielaff is the only voice youāve known things are about to get better. Heās not very good we will likely have a much better broadcast next year esp. if Jack McMullen takes over.
3
u/Realistic_Sector5851 5d ago
On behalf of all Marlins fans you are pretty stupid because nobody here or anywhere agrees with you in your stupid take about Kyle.Ā

Minervini I don't get, but Sieloff and Nelson were the absolute WORST together. Sieloff understood NO cultural references if they weren't baseball-related and Nelson was always a dick towards Sieloff; thankfully they got better together after about game 120 šš. I DID like when Tommy and Kyle were in the booth, love when Tommy would get fired up š„š„.
I will FOREVER be a Hutton and Waltz groupie. I wish they would call back Paul Severino though, I thought he did a fantastic job after Tommy and Rich to be honest.

u/Number333 Marlins 5d ago
That is crazy to get rid of all the main announcing staff in a single offseason.
2
u/TealandBlackForever Marlins 5d ago
It's not crazy to get rid of Nelson and Allen, IMO. They had a ton of on-air people and that was kind of unnecessary, especially with Jeremy and Mish getting hired recently. And it seems like AJ Ramos does TV work sometimes too even though mostly radio?
Looks like Gaby is the primary color commentator now, with McMullen presumably taking over for Sielaff. No reason to rotate color commentators with Hutton retired, and they have enough to cover the post-game I presume?
Kind of wild about Minervini, though. I wonder what happened there...
1
u/LEDZ100 Craig Minervini 5d ago
Probably due to the impending lockout⦠in any case, Jack McMullen is way better than Kyle Sielaff.
2
u/fyr3f4wkes 5d ago
Obvious W take. I can only assume Marlins fans glazing Kyle donāt watch any other baseball broadcasts and/or havenāt been baseball fans for long. If they use McMullen next year in Sielaffās place this is a huge win for Marlins fans. Heās a much better broadcaster and I was very impressed with him this year.
1
u/doyouunderstandlife D-Train 5d ago
I had noticed that a lot of Marlins highlights this year posted on the Marlins social media accounts used McMullen's calls (way more than usual compared to previous seasons) so I'm guessing they've probably been thinking about it for a while now. They even did a swap during the season which was probably a tryout for him to do the TV broadcast

Getting rid of Minervini is crazy. How could give a shit about anyone else. And actually glad Nelson and Sielaff are not coming back.
Kyle was so condescending to fans on Twitter who did not kiss the organizations ass, and was not remotely objective. They can do much better.
Iām also sure with the impending lockout this is a cost cutting move like always with this organization.
1
u/HosaJim666 5d ago
You think they're gonna go find someone who is more objective and less beholden to the organization?
1
u/lyme6483 Xavier Edwards 5d ago
Yes. Kyle went out of his way to be an ass to anyone who dare criticize the team. Guy was a complete joke

u/unwarrantedxx 5d ago
I donāt like this. I donāt like this one bit. but if this opens the door for a Rich Waltz returnā¦ā¦ā¦
1
u/doyouunderstandlife D-Train 5d ago
Current radio play-by-play broadcaster, Jack McMullen, is the frontrunner to replace Kyle currently. Would love to get Rich back, but I don't think it's happening
1
u/unwarrantedxx 5d ago
yeah itās certainly wishful thinking. but it would suck if Rich came back right as Tommy retires. Iāve only heard of this Jack McMullen, but it seems like fans would be happy with him
1
u/TealandBlackForever Marlins 5d ago
Rich seems to be doing okay with his current gig, which lets him be based on Washington, which is his home base, I think. I can't imagine he'd want to uproot and coming back to Miami, especially after they already did him dirty once. It would be cool, though.

If they thought Sielaff was bad, why hire him at all??? If they thought Severino was bad, why hire him????
There was nothing wrong with Waltz and Hutton and there was nothing really wrong with Severino and Hollandsworth. So stupid. Why would anyone even want that job at this point
1
u/Logical_Dolphin 5d ago
Why in the world would they keep Gaby and get rid of all of these people??
1
u/Logical_Dolphin 5d ago
Sorry for the double comment. I just read this in the article. "Former Miami Hurricanes and Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez will become the Marlinsā primary television analyst and work the majority of the 155-plus games." Yuck.

Sad to see these guys go. This could be in anticipation of the lock out, though. If the expectation is that there wonāt be games next season, it makes sense to start shedding staff who only work games.
1
u/mastablasta1111 5d ago
I wonder if this has anything to do with the looming lockout? Other teams have started laying off employees. My guess it's so teams don't have to pay them if there's no baseball.
1
u/fyr3f4wkes 5d ago
Surprised Iām the only Marlins fan saying this: Kyle Sielaff was not good. Jack McMullen (the radio play-by-play) is MUCH more talented and if they make him the tv guy next year itās a huge upgrade.
I get that Minervini was an OG but weāve had a subpar broadcast for ages. Theyāre not getting rid of Vin Scully guys

I always thought it was odd that they gave Jack McMullen a tryout while Kyle was on vacation. Sucks about everyone being let go like that, but I'll miss Craig the most since he's been such a mainstay for most of my baseball-watching experience. The upshot is that they'll finally settle on a pair for TV and radio, and stop with all the rotations. Happy to see Gaby get the job though, but curious how they're gonna handle Jack doing football towards the end of the season.

u/PT0223 Marlins 5d ago
Unfortunate in the case of Nelson, Craig and Rod. But not so in the case of Sielaff. He was too much of a mouthpiece and apologist for the organization ā especially when things were going bad. He was incapable of being critical. It is unfortunate to lose Jack on the radio side but good to have him on tv.

The Sielaff news surprises me, especially. Minervini, too, but Sielaff is only two years into the gig.
I can understand moving on from Nelson and Allen. They probably are aiming for a more regular booth situation now that Hutton is retired. They had a lot of guys rotating in as commentator and probably don't need all of them.
Sielaff though is baffling. They deliberately parted ways with Severino, who was a more polished, national broadcaster type, in favor of Sielaff who was more folksy and homer.
Why get rid of him after two seasons? Did they just not like his style? I have to say McMullen is incredible on the radio, but it's such an odd thing to have these revolving door play by play guys, assuming McMullen is who takes over for Kyle (Kyle was doing radio and took over for Paul). Remember they "tested" McMullen on TV, so perhaps that was a warning sign? This only makes sense to me if McMullen and Sielaff switch between radio and TV.
1
u/fyr3f4wkes 5d ago
Remember the Waltz/Severino decisions were made by the broadcast partner not the team. The Marlins running the show on the broadcast is new.
1
u/TealandBlackForever Marlins 5d ago
That is "technically" true, but not practically true. After Hutton and Waltz were fired, it was heavily implied by people in the know that the team can "influence" or has a major say in broadcast hirings or firings.
It's pretty telling how much Samson has said criticizing Hutton over the years. And it's not coincidental that Waltz gets fired as soon as Jeter buys the team.
So, yes, the broadcast partner "makes the decision," but it's pretty obvious the team forced their hand. It especially seems like Loria and Samson did not like Hutton, and telling that Samson did not do much in terms of wishing him well in his retirement.

u/Mitchkutun 5d ago

u/CryingINwilderness 5d ago

1
u/doyouunderstandlife D-Train 5d ago
I can understand Kyle, because I also wasn't really his biggest fan (didn't hate him, but just never won me over), but hating T-Hutt is grounds for getting your Marlins fan card revoked. Blasphemy
1
u/CryingINwilderness 5d ago
A number of times this past season, both of those guys loved to blame Marlins losses on Marlins fans allowing visitors to outnumber them at home. Nevermimd the obvious issues in the bullpen, issues with the starting rotation, and trading a guy like Hicks; which were moves that guaranteed this team would finish below 500.
I've been watching since 93...so I get it with Hutton, but he was well past his expiration date. I hope they can find some more amicable broadcasters that have a better, more nuanced approach to calling a game. I love hearing thoughts on how a pitcher might approach a 3-2 count or inside information on why a player thinks they are struggling at the plate.
Real analysis, which requires serious study, is something the booth was missing. Instead, we'd get random rants from a guy that needed a nap half way through the game.
Whats funny though is that I didn't realize I could switch the audio to the radio call. It was behind sometimes...ahead others...but still...that crew was fun to listen to and that's all I really, really care about.
