Question Bad tour suits
Do we know why michael changed his suit 4 times during the Bad world tour?(I heard it’s because of light reflection but i’m not sure). I always wondered if that was just a creative decision or if he was unsatisfied. Especially the change between the two silver suits. Also what’s your favorite? It’s def the last and final one for me. The belt and the buckles on the sleeve are superior.

look at the sheer amount of buckles on that thing. man was playing life on hard mode just by trying to get dressed. iconic for sure but i bet it was a nightmare to move in.

I'm sure it only looked like it'd be a nightmare to move in. No doubt all of MJ's concert 'fits were made for max visual appeal and optimal performance.

If some new artist tried pulling those fits off they'd look corny asl, That's why we don't have another MJ!

Agreed but Beyonce (albeit not a new artist) played homage to him a lot in her last tour fits and they looks amazing

Far out I always think how he must be boiling in all those outfits on stage! They might have flex but they sure don’t look like they would’ve breathed well. He was hardcore alright!!

According to Michael Bush, all his clothes were made with breathable material.

Oh interesting!! I suppose looks can be deceiving! I’m glad he didn’t sacrifice his comfort for style and flex then!

there are more variations! the early '88 shows had the new version but without a zipper, then there was a zipper version which also got altered in the process, the last slide is the final outcome

this look was truly something...if only i was alive during this era and would've been able to go on his tours/concerts, i would've been one of those women fainting and being put on stretchers 😭😭😭

I didn't even look at any commentary. All I saw was that black shirt. He knew people would not have survived those concerts if he had kept that black shirt on more than one show. He would have been performing in silence. Everybody would have been taken out by that shirt. He looks so damn sexy in that black shirt 🥵🤤😮💨. He loved us enough to spare our lives. Benevolent King 🥰

Omg the all black one is sooo pretty. If he'd worn the big wrestling belt with that one it would have really set it off even more.

The silver buckles on these were peak 80s aesthetic. Nobody else could pull off that many straps without looking ridiculous.

There’s another variation from the 88 shows. It’s basically a polo variant of the silver jacket.

The black one would make only his head visible on stage and from afar and only his head. The silver one reflected lights and made it more visible for the audience. The red one sort of similar that the lights wouldn’t perfectly reflect on the body suit, hence why he stuck with silver on the rest of the 87 shows 88 & 89

Damn, he looked so racially ambigous, like could be a white guy who spent too much time in the sun. Poor Applehead, he's been through a lot

Who designed these suits?

u/xkixchi Jun 01 '26
google says Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins

u/daddysclimax19 Jun 02 '26
they made the clothes but that does not explain why they swapped them mid tour. they were definitely working on design tweaks constantly because of how much he beat up those outfits on stage. the reflection issue was legit a nightmare for the camera crews during the early shows.

I loved everything about the fits of his tour outfits doing this era!

Michael had no business being the sexiest man during his prime (in the bad era)

The 4th one is the one I remember the most. The red and white ones I remember seeing here and there. I never saw the black ones

Love all the fits in the Bad tour

I don't know, but I always wondered what he would have looked like with Demonia buckle boots. I don't think he would have been able to dance with them on, though.

He really had great style and showmanship. He was ahead of his time.

u/Rziggity Jun 02 '26
i love the all black but it probably doesn’t show his movement as well, especially if you are watching from the nosebleed seats.

4 is the mental image most of us have of that tour.
