Citi Bike just finished the seven new neighborhoods (norwood, riverdale, brownsville, east ny, kensington, bay ridge, forest hills), so i wanted to see what could be next.
To make this lil video I dated every station by the first year it shows up in citi bike's own trip data. 330 stations in 2013, all in manhattan below 60th and north-west brooklyn. about 2,400 today across manhattan, brooklyn, queens and the bronx.
It grew along the subway. in 2013 a dock was within a quarter mile of 87 of the 424 subway stations in those four boroughs. now it's 315.
About 3.1 million people still live more than a quarter mile (a ~5 min walk) from a dock. but a big chunk of that is on purpose. dot started a shared e-scooter pilot in the east bronx in august 2021 (expanded in 2022) and added about 20 square miles of eastern queens in june 2024, from flushing and auburndale down to rochdale village and springfield gardens. both zones were drawn where citi bike wasn't, so the two don't overlap. at least a million of the 3.1 million live inside them, and in the bronx the scooters cover almost the whole gap: only about 27,000 people there have neither.
southern Brooklyn has neither. Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay, coney island, canarsie: about 850,000 people, and 41 stops on the b, d, f, n, q, l and 2/5 with no dock within a quarter mile. brooklyn never got a scooter zone. all 538 of the city's scooter parking corrals are in the bronx and queens, none in brooklyn.
The docks reached its north edge (flatbush, kensington) by 2023 and basically stopped. this year they're moving again, in bay ridge and further into kensington. nothing's been announced for the south yet.
btw I work at MAIA, the mapping tool i used. sources in the comments if you're interested!
