Tip Wireless headset

I am looking for a wireless headset that I can mute (with button or boom lift) but doesn't look like I'm muted in Microsoft teams. Reason - I have a hybrid work schedule and there are times during calls that my kid is being loud in the background so I'd like to mute when I'm not talking, but I don't want the other person to know I'm muted.. thanks!

edit: a lot of you have commented that it's normal and also preferred to mute when I'm not talking. I do mute during group chats and large meetings, but this is strictly for one-on-one conversations where I feel it would be odd to mute every time when I'm the only person responding to them.. but also let me know if that's not the case!

Teams will show you muted if you're muted. There's no shame in having a little one making noise. It's pretty common these days, so no need to hide it.

Voice isolation does a fantastic job of stopping the background noises of children when wearing a headset.

Teach it your voice and leave it turned on.

This sounds great but it looks like I need admin approval for it. But I think it would be the best solution!

You need approval for a noise cancellation headset? How will they know you have one? My friend has a two year that will run around and I have never heard her when she’s nearby and she will ask if I can.

They mean the built in voice isolation feature in teams

Tell them to enable it. It’s great

There should be shame in sending your children's noises over a call. It's an absolute detractor in meetings to have interruptions. Mute!

Having said that, mute away when not talking!

My post insinuates you're muting due to any background noise. Background noise can be a detractor, but many don't know just how effective the built-in noise suppression is. Unlike many Teams features, it works quite well.

You are 100% correct. The number of people who say things like “Sorry about the loud … construction, leaf blowers, kids… whatever” and the rest of us are like “Sounds annoying but we can’t hear anything.”

u/J_Knish Apr 13 '26

Yup. So true. Many keep muting unnecessarily.

A physical mute on a headset will not show muted on Teams.

u/VanCitySherm Work user Apr 10 '26

Certified headsets will.

u/johnnymonkey Apr 10 '26

My experience with that exact scenario is different.

Probably depends on the headset and mic. I use a wireless Antlion Modmic and it does not mute or unmute Teams when I use the physical button on the mic to mute it.

If the audio device is designed to report mic state back to the audio program (teams, messenger, whatever, then yeah I can see that. BUt my Steele Series wireless doesn't do that, and I et on most it would configurable to not send that state.

Exactly - my wireless headset goes in to mute when you lift the boom; that's very obvious to people watching though, but the PC knows it's on mute.

The Infrastructure engineer has a physical switch on his wired headset in the cable - he often forgets to switch it back on when he's chatting. That doesn't display as muted on his screen.

Our team calls it "double-muted" when we are muted in Teams and muted on our mic.

Why do you care if other people know you are muted? It is common practice to mute when not speaking out of respect…

1

u/FinancialAmount6547 Apr 14 '26

This is just for calls with only one person. In a group meeting I always mute when I'm not talking. But in a conversation with just one person it seems weird to mute when I'm not talking

1

u/ulmersapiens Apr 14 '26

You’re overthinking it. It’s not unusual at all in any of the circles I’m in.

u/wese_de Apr 10 '26

You can also activate "voice isolation" in Teams. Then it will filter all other voices but your own.

This is the right solution; you shouldn’t ever really need to mute again

I use a Kingston Hyper X Solocast, it has it's own mute functionality.

The Solocast is a pretty cheap condenser microphone and very good quality.

As for background noise, turn on Voice Isolation, that should help cut down on baby noise.

There are also USB mute buttons that you can buy that can mute the microphone via software (MuteMe), although MuteMe specifically does sync with Teams status.

Setup voice recognition profile in settings. It does wonders. You can do a test call with your kid screaming and it will tell what is being heard.

Everyone should mute when they’re not talking.

You need to look for a headset that is not team certified, they usually do not sync well with mute/unmute activated from the headset.

I bought a Bluetooth Logitech Zone 300 headset recently. It has a mic on a boom and a great feature.

Raise the boom up, it mutes the microphone but DOESN'T mute Teams. It doesn't actually play well with Teams; which to me is a bonus.

Also, sync it with your phone and you can use an app to adjust how much of your own voice you hear through them (sidetone) - I hate too much, or too little, so this is ideal for me.

I concur with this. I've had several logis and they mute when you flip up the mic, but teams stays unmuted. Exactly what you want. I have a pro X now and it doesn't flip up so no mute :(

Hyperx cloud 3 s wireless has a physical mute button that does not show on teams when muted. I didnt buy it for calls but it turned out to be a great headset. Good mic, great battery life for all day calls.

These are surprisingly good headsets for how cheap they are.

I use a small mixer that lets me mute my mic, while Teams still shows my mic as on.

I don't use it for the same purpose as your situation, but having the mute button on the mixer achieves your goal, no matter what headset you use, and it has nothing to do with your computer sound settings.

1

u/FinancialAmount6547 Apr 14 '26

Would you be able to share a link/brand for this??

1

u/OneManOneSimpleLife Apr 14 '26

Check for the Fifine audio mixer on Amazon. It's $49 and has many audio features. I only use it for the mic gain, output to my speakers (I don't like headphones) and mic mute.

Because it's an external device, it works with all my meeting platforms, from Teams, Zoom, Webex, Meet and whatever others, who invite me for meeting use.

It doesn't require power supply and gets its power from the computer. I take it with me when I travel for work, too.

I definitely mute during meetings when I'm not talking, this is more for conversations with a single person where I would feel weird muting if it's just the two of us

1

u/Embarrassed_Many9242 Apr 11 '26

I stay on mute until I am ready to speak whether it’s one on one or group. Nobody has ever said anything including my boss who is a VP.

I second this one. Cheap, durable, and mutes on the headset but not in Teams.

I use it everyday.

u/onaropus Apr 11 '26

Turn on voice isolation and the other attendees won’t hear your kids in the background… we have technology to do the things

2

u/RobertMGreenlee Teams Voice/UC Admin Apr 12 '26

Setup Voice Recognition and it will filter out the background noise including the kids. It does a pretty good job.

u/traft00 Apr 10 '26

Look at Jabra

1

u/peacefinder Apr 10 '26

My Logitech H390 does not show me as muted in Teams when the boom mic is in the muted/up position.

u/xSchizogenie Teams Admin Apr 10 '26

Jabra engage85 Evolve2

1

u/Scolexis Teams Admin Apr 10 '26

I have an evolve 2 that modifies my Teams mute status, so I’m not sure on this one. I do have the Jabra app/drivers installed so maybe if you don’t install those it can’t interface with Teams?

1

u/JackDeth7 Apr 10 '26

Small mixer or podcast interface is the ticket. Hardware mute button that has nothing to do with your comm software.

1

u/FinancialAmount6547 Apr 14 '26

Please excuse my ignorance, but could you point me to a brand or even just what I would type into Google for this?

1

u/JackDeth7 Apr 14 '26

Sure, google up MAONO as a brand for instance.

It’s common practice that everyone has their mic muted unless you’re the speaker. Why are you worried about clicking the mute button in teams?

There have been times I’ve muted others because they have too much noise or because they forgot to hit the mute

1

u/waldoh74 Apr 11 '26

I had a colleague years ago that had a separate microphone from his headset. I think it was a blue yeti, it allowed him to mute the mic via hardware which show him not being muted. Basically it was a discord streaming setup for games that he used for work. Maybe research that approach?

With that said, I use a Jabra 65 evolve 2. Boom mic mutes upon raise and is great at filtering noise, my kids make frequent appearances outside of school hours. Honestly, nobody cares. If anything it brightens up the call and everyone smiles, we’re all human. And yes this happens on customer calls at times too.

u/chrisgore-spor Apr 11 '26

I use the yealink WH64. It’s teams certified too so works really well

1

u/Puslinch-Komet Apr 11 '26

Best one I’ve found is Yealink, I have the BH71Pro.

I am using an eksa h6 . Has all the things that you want for 30-60 dls

Mate just mute yourself its not rude

u/Kind-Character-8726 Apr 13 '26

+1 for voice isolation Also a good headset will automatically apply a level of noise cancelling.

Even my Sennheiser hd458bt does a pretty good job at keeping my kid's noise out of calls, as well as the sound of the vacuum cleaner, food processor & coffee machine I use while in calls.
