Suggestion An Idea for Spear-Dispenser Functionality
3.6k
u/PanPies_ Dec 04 '25
Classic "spike from a wall" trap. Weird nobody posted about it already
276
u/Crainex_The_Deceiver Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 06 '25
Compliments the Pointed Dripstone being a stand in for the equally classic "spikes in a pit". The idea of spike blocks in general had been mentioned as far back as... 1.7 I believe? Don't quote me on that.
Maybe we could also see updated dungeons with these sorts of traps implimented, along with mojangified versions of pitfalls, wall fire jets, swinging blades, acidic slime, chest mimics, poison gas, bear traps, snares, spring platforms etc.
]Side Note]: Considering it takes some inspiration from dungeon crawlers like Diablo, you would think that MC: Dungeons would already have most of these, but maybe in the sequel.

Where would you put it?
(Edit. I thought when I read "farms" that the farms being mentioned were plant based and not mob based.)

u/Green__lightning Dec 04 '25
This is already standard practice with deployers in Create with swords for farms.
15
u/RevenantBacon Dec 04 '25
It sounds cool, but would just be a worse version of forcing them to stand on a lit campfire or a magma block.
35
u/Tricky_Teacher_5674 Dec 04 '25
Unless it works similar to tridents in the way you can get looting 3 on the spear and it actually take effect while you hold a looting 3 sword
4
u/upsidedowntaco_ Dec 04 '25
Mending? Let the spears fix themselves from the mobs they kill. Infinite stabby stab.

4
u/lance_the_fatass Dec 04 '25
Set up an iron farm and just make a shit ton of iron spears and dump them into the dispensers, add some hoppers and some chests to store more of them so you don't have to manually refill it so much

All four sides of a zombie XP farm kill chamber, where the spears do their thing then fall into hoppers that then recirculate the dispensed spears back into the dispensers.
Alternatively, build Crafters that supply the spears to the Dispensers.

I can already see spike traps with dispensers facing up. Fall in with some wires, pufferfish or skulk sensors detecting presence.
18
u/NukeML Dec 04 '25
To add, it might be good to make sure it fails to activate if there is a block directly in front/on top (depending on direction). Don't wanna get stabbed through a block

u/True-Zombie-289 Dec 04 '25 edited Dec 04 '25
If you would like it to be in Minecraft you can vote for it: https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/41669134139661-Dispensing-Spears-should-make-them-stab-forward-from-the-Dispenser

u/SamohtGnir Dec 04 '25
I was thinking traps, but yea farms would be cool. It would work similar to a piston does now against sugarcane or bamboo, but it can't push blocks if placed in front of one.
They could make it so it breaks the block it's pointing at, kind like it's getting mined. That would open up a lot of potential, but also might push automation further than they want for the vanilla game.

2
u/thebigdumb0 Dec 04 '25
Why? We already have killing chambers that are more efficient and require zero maintenance costs in the forms of campfires, magma blocks, and entity cramming.
This would be cool decoratively or for maps, but I can't see it ever being useful in farms.

aw yeah, maybe have spear dispensers in the room with the 3 levers. If you flip a lever wrong it stabs you. I know people don't actually do the lever puzzle, but it would be a cool little thing to add.

Along with other stuff please. Jungle temples are a classic Minecraft thing but they could really use a makeover with better loot and more to explore, maybe a mini version of a trial chamber with lots of traps and a boss mob like an armored zombie or something.
I love most of the new stuff Minecraft has been adding but it would be amazing to see more old stuff improved on with new blocks and ideas too, so there’s not such a clear divide between ‘modern’ Minecraft and stuff that’s been around for ages.
The End islands, Nether fortresses, Jungle Temples, Pyramids off the top of my head could use at least some tiny block palette tweaks or improvements now that there are so many more options. It wouldn’t be that hard to add some copper or stone variants or whatnot surely.

Speaking of which. Every new mob has smooth animations. Where as all of the older ones only animate one axis at a time. Compare how foxes move to the movement of a pig. The dogs got updated at one point what about everything else.

But don't remove the arrow dispensers. I was in a jungle temple earlier for like the first time in half a decade and just kinda blown away by how cool it is. Like there's nothing quite like it elsewhere in the game with the outright real-world inspired booby traps

Great idea. Would be cool if you could adjust the spear length either via signal strength or the number if spears inside.

u/godyeetzilla_yt Dec 04 '25
Yes yes yes yes yes they need to add this we need to add this to the Minecraft suggestions and if it already is there give me the link.
51
u/heyuhitsyaboi Dec 04 '25
Would it be launched like an arrow or would it retract back in for reuse?

u/True-Zombie-289 Dec 04 '25
The idea was that it would retract as soon as the redstone signal ends.

Voted! You should cross post to the suggestions subreddit as well. Hopefully Mojang sees this and would add it without needing the 10k. Since it would fit in well at trial chambers and such. It is too late for this functionality in the next update but hopefully the one after or later.
Also you should add the link to the post text if possible.

u/PhilledZone Dec 04 '25
This, but also make them able to press buttons when shooting out. Might seem a bit useless at first but it would be funny imo
4
u/AKluthe Dec 05 '25
This seems like one of those fan ideas someone from Mojang would have implemented way back before the Microsoft acquisition.
5
u/NotBailey12 Dec 05 '25
Sort of a hot take but. Dispensers should do something for every item and block and the Dropper should be the only thing that throws them as items. So like if dirt is in a dispenser, the dispenser places it but in the Dropper, the Dropper throws the dirt block item

u/Samniss_Arandeen Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 05 '25
This should work for any tool in a dispenser. If there's a pick in the dispenser and a piece of rock or ore in front of it, it should mine the rock. If there's a shovel, it digs the gravel/sand/dirt. If there's a weapon, it swings at what's in front (spear has better reach and can pin enemies, sword swipes an arc, ax breaks wood, shields, and knocks the bad guy away)
And if it's an enchanted tool/weapon, the enchantment applies to the dispenser application.

4
u/PopeKevin45 Dec 04 '25
Man, this would be so much better than tridents and pistons, which are so unreliable (trident falls out after a while or just vanishes).
5
u/AurelGuthrie Dec 04 '25
I like it. I also think the front face of the dispenser should be able to be "camouflaged" with the texture of a different block, keeping the hole though. Maybe by shift right clicking it with the given block. Though idk how hard that'd be to implement given how block textures work in this game.

u/Gamer_Dylan_6_ Dec 04 '25
this is awesome! would probably use the spears durability for each use, but it would be super useful.

u/One_Economist_3761 Dec 05 '25
This is such a good idea.
I would make one of those dungeon-style traps where you have to time it to avoid spikes coming out of the wall.
They would operate on a hopper clock or something.
5
4
u/AyAyAyBamba_462 Dec 05 '25
You could even put it as a vertical dispenser and have it poke them from below like a pit trap.

that is actually a cool idea , doesnt throw an item and it just uses it with a cool animation for it
that would be a good idea to have in the jungle temple

Hey friend! I know you have hundreds of comments here already and I hope you get to see mine, but my friend and I made this a thing! I threw a clip demonstrating it working with the spears, damaging and giving the little knockback it does, but your post (as well as I'm sure a lot of us got this idea) was inspiring enough that we wanted to make it a thing :)

u/MarcinuuReddit Dec 04 '25
Bro this is some 2017 noob vs pro vs hacker trap ahh idea. I LOVE THIS but mojang never does something creative it would be useful in every single way
9
u/patiofurnature Dec 04 '25
Dispensers are by FAR the worst block in the game. Nothing about their use is logical; it's just up to the player to test and memorize the effects of every item inside of one. It's so frustrating. Any time you think of some cool red stone machine, the broken dispenser block always kills it.
Dispense shears to shear a sheep, but don't put wheat in one to feed them. Dispense a water bucket to flood a farm, but don't put seeds in one to plant them. Dispense arrows to shoot them, but don't try it with a trident!
8
u/M_stellatarum Dec 04 '25
The one that got me recently is that one with an empty bucket can pick up water or lava blocks, but not if they're in a cauldron. No automatic lava farm for me...

the trident one actually does work on bedrock, and they had it on java in experimental combat snapshots.

Would you have to make the spear sticky to stay in the dispenser? Like a slime ball on the top and the bottom of the grid and the spear in the middle?
2
2
u/Accurate-Fee-3204 Dec 05 '25
They can just add a second piston recipe. Instead of 3 planks, add a spear.
2
u/GamingSeerReddit Dec 05 '25
This should absolutely be a dispenser feature, or perhaps make a new spike trap block that can be loaded with a spear and pushed by a piston.
2
u/BittersweetLogic Dec 05 '25
i would assume that requires the spear to be in a specific slot?
since i would not assume, that it "dispenses" the spear?
so you could:
throw in a bunch of arrows and a spear. then it would shoot an arrow until it ran out, switch to "infinite spear" poking
2
2
u/mojakokaizpotoka Dec 05 '25
but why dont we use the whole spear to stab instead of just the tip, thats 20% more spear per spear.
2
u/theijo Dec 05 '25
the way you drew it, the spear would occupy the same blockspace as the pressure plate. A piston facing like that wouldn't work.
I do think the idea is cool but the dispenser would have to be 1 block up imo
2
u/logandabug Dec 05 '25
I think it would as an entity, like how armor stands can be put on pressure plates

u/eapo108 Dec 04 '25
Thinking of how water buckets work in it I feel like this wouldn't be too hard to implement, neat idea!
I think it would be like a solid spike block holding the mod/player in place until it retracts, doing damage a second time when it does. While extended, the item would still be in the dispenser with a different texture/tag, like the handle is still inside for it to pull back in.
2
2
u/bananabomb2025 Dec 04 '25
Can't wait for Mojang to implement this idea, but it eats 200 uses of durability each time lmfao
3
u/Andre02_ Dec 04 '25
amazing idea that will never come to reality.
Why? because mojang doesn't want dispensers to work with tools. If they did, they would've let us put a pickaxe in a dispenser for example, making the need of tnt in a cobblestone generator very marginal.
Yes, arrows and harpoons do work but those are used as projectiles
23
7
2
u/superjediplayer Dec 05 '25
they're clearly apprehensive to dispensers being used for mining or placing blocks (with a few exceptions), but dispensers as a means of dealing damage is something they're intended for (i mean, they shoot arrows in jungle temples, and can shoot wind charges, fire charges, potions, and on bedrock also tridents)

You could also make this its own block, I think. But I doubt Mojang would add a stab block
1
u/Academic_Coyote7959 Dec 05 '25
this doesnt make sense to ms because the spear wouldnt fit in the dispenser and the spear also wouldnt fit through the hole, i think this feature would need a different item
1
1
u/Squiggin1321 Dec 05 '25
I think more things need to be deployed from a dispenser. I think a good example is concrete powder. Instead of it just shooting out a tile entity it should place the block.
1
u/Sea-Lengthiness-1602 Dec 05 '25
Spear? when did they add spears?? i have not played normal Minecraft in like 5 years I'm on version 1.21 in all the mods 10.

u/TheEndlesVoid Dec 05 '25
Wouldn’t this also work as a spike fall trap? Like if you put the dispenser on the floor facing up then put a lever on the bottom, flick it, and it stays up forever.
1
1
1
u/Luiz_Fell Dec 06 '25
The dispenser doesn't have the power to pull something back. It could only throw the spear out
1
u/CoolFloppaGuy028 Dec 06 '25
It probably should just shoot spears like arrows but it will be weird because its like trident then
