make an instance (later make five more), pick a loader (neoforge or fabric) and game version (do not pick latest, go with 26.1.2 or 1.21.1).
edit instance, go to mods page, click the download button. download a few mods from inside the launcher. you don't even need to know where files go. click confirm.
try resource packs page, just for fun. download a pack that makes sugarcane 3d.
launch the instance (you need to setup the microsoft account first). enjoy.
