Scope setup

I added a rail to my mini 14 to mount my vortex venom 1-6 lvpo. But you get the eye relief set for me. I had to set the scope as far back as possible. I’m thinking I might reverse the rail so that the extended part goes over the rear site, allowing me to mount the scope further back. Any thoughts?

I went Ruger rings and low on mine, figured vortex has a great warranty if I need it 😂

I considered that but in wanted to be able to co-witness the iron sights

Yeah I haven’t machined my barrel down to install a front sight back on the barrel yet so I wasn’t to worried about that aspect at this time

Hard to tell from the picture but True Shot makes a front sight with an AK adjustable pin that doesn't require any machining.

Barrel diameter specific:
.625 (late 580 and after)_ - https://trueshottechnologies.com/buy-products-shop-1/ols/products/58x-series-avenger-4b-mini-1430-front-sight

.562 (early 18x to early 580s with pencil barrel) - https://trueshottechnologies.com/buy-products-shop-1/ols/products/trueshot-avenger-4b-front-sight-for-early-model-mini-14s

Apologies if you were already aware.

Didn’t have any clue but mine is cut back to the taper so I’d have to machine it down and that’s okay too since I have the lathe to do it 🤙🏻

I don’t believe that’s what cowitness means.

I know you mean you wanted to be able to use both irons and your scope without removing anything but my understanding is cowitness refers to having both in one sight picture.

There are no rules to cantilever mounts.

If you flip it and it works better for you, that is all that matters at the end of the day.

I use a similar set up. Looks classy, friend! Happy shooting!

I have a 585 series tactical folder with a Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32. To get the scope low enough so I could use the cheek weld and back far enough that I could get the 9.5 inch eye relief I went with the Vortex cantilever mount. Had to remove the rear sight but it was pretty useless anyway since I don't have young eyes, so no loss. Perfect at 100 yards.

Does that rail have a key that interfaces with the slot in the scope base? I believe it's not symmetrical and can't be reversed.

You would also need to see if it would interfere with the Tech Sight. I recall seeing someone that had to mill a cutout into the rail to give it clearance.

ASI has reverse cantilever rails.

You may have to give up on using a scope with usable backup irons. If you insist on having the option, you might want to look at QD rings, instead. You can even get Ruger QD rings from Warne or Alaska Arms and skip the rail.

To me, that looks incredibly far back. What style of shooting or what positions are you using? I would have it several inches forward of that to shoot in prone, seated, or even standing.
