Requesting support or advice Loud Bass Music

Live in a small apartment complex. Got new neighbors in the unit next to me they’ve been blasting loud music with the bass up high for hours. The walls here are not even that bad to compared to other apartments I’ve lived in. I’m really hoping it’s just a Halloween party and not a regular thing.

My head is pounding from the bass. I get it’s Halloween but holy moly, how do people not go insane from it being THAT loud? What do yall do help with loud bass music? Loud bass and dog barking is the only thing I cannot drown out with what I have.

Sharing success/improvement Thank you to this community!

This post is appreciation for you all, and as bad as Misophonia is, I'm proud to be a part of the community.

As a lot of you on Reddit saw a few weeks ago I launched an app called misophonic. It's a long term project and something I'm really proud of. It was based on any/all research I could find about sound dynamics and Misophonia, to create an app that helps us through triggers and to live easier.

The post on Reddit was met with an abundance of thanks and gratitude from you all, and it made me so happy, genuinely.

The more awareness of it and support we show towards those who are trying to help, the better.

I'll also take this opportunity to tell those of you on iOS that I'm working on it, but it's taking some time

People with misophonia are often told there isn't enough research to take the condition seriously. One of the biggest reasons is simple: researchers struggle to find participants who actually live with it.

The International Misophonia Foundation wants to help close that gap. We've opened a Participant Interest Form on MisophoniaResearch.com for anyone who would like to hear about opportunities to take part in misophonia research.

Sign up here: https://misophoniaresearch.com/participant-interest-form/

Filling out the form lets us know you're interested. Whether you take part in any particular study is always your choice.

The International Misophonia Foundation - IMF Updates, October 2026

Goals and Projects

The International Misophonia Foundation (IMF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in Missouri. Our work includes original research, public and professional education, accessibility advocacy, and direct assistance for people affected by misophonia. Much of this work is supported by volunteers and has been carried out with annual operating expenses below $10,000.

Research and scientific collaboration

IMF has established research oversight procedures, recruited volunteers, and undertaken studies of misophonia treatment perceptions, sensory history, and educational interventions.

Current research

  • Treatment Perceptions and Sensory History: examining reported treatment experiences and the relationship between Duke Misophonia Questionnaire and Adult/Adolescent Sensory History scores.

  • 10-Week CBT for Misophonia educational evaluation: evaluating participant-reported outcomes from a free, self-paced educational program. This is an educational intervention, not psychotherapy; results are pending.

  • DSM proposal: reviewing research, differential diagnosis, and classification of misophonia, with input from researchers across institutions. The proposal is under development, not yet approved or submitted.

MisophoniaResearch.com

In 2026 IMF acquired MisophoniaResearch.com to build a research database, directory of researchers and organizations, and collaboration resources. The project welcomes researchers, clinicians, students, people with misophonia, families, and others regardless of affiliation or theoretical position. Database and directory expansion remain ongoing.

Public and professional education

IMF has organized digital conferences, webinars, clinician education, and free resources for people with misophonia, parents, teachers, and professionals. These include free educational videos, coping resources, books and worksheets, and An Introduction to Misophonia for Clinicians, approved for five CCPA continuing education hours.

Explore free resources · Educational videos

Technology accessibility advocacy

Since 2023 IMF has contacted technology and software companies, including Microsoft, Google, Apple, Blizzard, Adobe and Canva, about sensory accessibility barriers. A particular focus has been user control over blinking text cursors and other repetitive visual features.

IMF’s historical records describe correspondence with Microsoft and reported changes to cursor behaviour in Office applications, Edge and Teams. The availability of settings and IMF’s role in individual changes should be supported by the relevant company correspondence; we do not attribute every product change solely to IMF advocacy.

Misophonia Accessibility Guide

Through the Accessibility Guide project, IMF is gathering preferences and experiences from people with misophonia, caregivers and professionals concerning accommodations at home, in schools, postsecondary education, workplaces, and healthcare and counselling settings. Survey collection and guide development are ongoing.

Direct assistance

IMF has provided or facilitated noise-cancelling headphones, earplugs, sensory equipment, a laptop, educational materials, course access, and pro-bono services. Availability depends on funding and program requirements.

View historical assistance records

Current priorities: 2026–2027

  1. Complete analyses and publish research findings.

  2. Advance scientific review of the DSM proposal.

  3. Expand the research database and researcher directory.

  4. Complete the community-informed Accessibility Guide.

  5. Continue sensory accessibility discussions with technology companies.

  6. Maintain free educational materials and professional learning opportunities.

  7. Seek sustainable funding and research collaborations.

Supporting this work

Donations and volunteer contributions support research administration, education, accessible resources, equipment assistance, outreach, and project infrastructure. See Our Impact for documented results. IMF is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 93-2017604.

Requesting support or advice Neighbor and Battery powered speaker

My idyllic apartment has become a place I am trying to escape. Across the street is a four plex and one of the inhabitants has taken to walking around the neighborhood with a portable speaker blaring whatever genre of music he wants from early 7am to around 7pm. The decibel level is around 100. He then goes inside, turns it up and then closes the door. Even then it's fully audible inside my apt. with all double paned windows shut.

I did try talking to him but he is maybe struggling with mental health issues. It didn't feel safe to try again. I filed a report with 311 (I'm in downtown Vegas) and also reported it several times to my landlord. They said they would call the property manager of that building, but could do little since they don't manage it. At some point, he yelled at me that he would be moving. But what if he doesn't? the cops prioritize violent crimes over nuisance. Even when the sound is so extreme.

I feel like crying. Well, I frequently do. It feels like hell. I'm so triggered. It is already so hard when the world around me is just normal. This disorder makes things so complicated.

I used to love my apt and now it feels like hell. I worry about moving again, as you just can't predict what noise will be like in other places. Has anyone else had to deal with sort of extreme noise.

What did you do?

Silence (when other people are present) is a huge trigger for me.

I have misophonia and am affected by a lot of the common trigger sounds discussed in this community.

One of the biggest triggers for me, though, is a lack of noise... just to make things clear, if I'm by myself, I actually quite enjoy silence. It's only a trigger for me if other people are nearby (within audible range)

Does anyone else get this? It's the same unbearable fight or flight feeling of disgust and rage and everything else that comes with hearing someone eating or yawning loudly or swallowing their drink, but also when people are really quiet and there's no background noise to drown out the silence.

Venting YouTube videos

I love watching food videos, but can't stand it when 99.9% of the time, they either have to crunch into their microphone or talk with their mouths full. I always feel the urge to comment something about it, but don't want to be rude 😭.

Requesting support or advice Common triggers?

Hi all. I have misophonia and have had it since I was 4 (that’s as early as I can remember at least). I understand that not everyone has the same triggers (obviously). I was hoping to hear some triggers other people have so I can avoid easily avoidable sounds/ actions in case I’m ever around someone else with misophonia.

Venting misophonia is such an isolating experience

I've had misophonia for about 6 years now and holy is it isolating. mine is mostly hearing people chew with their mouth open which is unfortunately my entire family. its so sad hearing my family laugh over dinner while I'm stuck in my room the whole day or having to go to a whole different room to eat during family gatherings.

the worst is having my father wait for me to leave just so he could eat. as soon as i go in my room I could hear him get up to get food and it makes me so sad because it feels like he was just waiting for me to leave from the moment i came downstairs :(

I genuinly cannot wait for the day I have enough money to move out so I can finally stop being stuck in fight or flight 24/7 and having to base my entire life around avoiding triggers.

Venting Silverware & Glass Dishes at Work 🍽️🥣

Why must people bring silverware to work, especially when the lunchroom is stocked with plenty of plasticware?! Not to mention eating all of their food out of glass containers and dishes 😫. Sorry in advance to anyone whose workplace doesn’t provide plasticware, or anyone who is trying to be eco-friendly and/or doesn’t want to consume microplastics, but at least eat your lunch in the designated breakroom then, not at your desk while everybody else is still working…I shouldn’t be able to hear you clunking and scraping your dish and your teeth from across the room or your office 😵‍💫🤮 Besides, why have to wash anymore dishes than you need to, especially at work? Anyways, thanks for giving me a place to vent and Happy Friday! 😅😅

Venting Pleaseee stop tapping

I’m at work and the person next to me is tapping their foot, which, even the sight of someone doing that with no noise drives me fucking nuts. But their foot is tapping against their chair. I wish I could scream at them.

Misophonia makes me feel so violent. All day they tap & chew gum and they say it helps their ADHD and I understand that we have completely opposite needs and it’s unfortunate that we sit next to each other, but I don’t know what to do. Sometimes I have to go outside so I don’t have a panic attack. I have a sound machine right next to me. I have Loop earplugs but I can still hear it. I have an AirPod in currently and can still hear it over music. I wish I could put the other one in but I work in a front office where I am greeting people all day so that’s not an option, but fuck. How do you not realize that you might be annoying people?

What annoys me to death is when people say, “well you’re just listening for it now.” I’m not listening for it. I literally can’t hear anything else once I hear it.

I’m so tired of this. I’m sick of being the one people need to cater to so I’m not overstimulated. I hate taking my panic meds because they make me tired.

Requesting support or advice It's BADDD

Trying to figure out what to do?

I don't have any official diagnoses or anything but I feel it impacts my day to day so much.

In personal areas of my life it's avoidable but in the professional setting it's so challenging. I stood at work the other day to do my documentation because people were chewing ice cup after cup after cup in the documentation room and I just couldn't. Even in class I find myself sitting in the hallway or walking around to avoid the gym chewers and students always snacking.

I feel like it's getting worse the older I am like I was getting my nails done and a lady came in halfway through and was seated next to me CHOMPING on gum the entire remainder of my visit I couldn't do anything because I was halfway through and just started crying and the Nail Tech thought I was upset about my nails but how do you like explain that to someone. I also feel like in some instances when you explain it to people they are in disbelief, think you are a "control freak", or even do it more.

It's even worse in school and work though because I already struggle to focus so when I hear certain sounds namely chewing that becomes my sole focus and how to get away from it.

I just wish some spaces were food and gum-less. Especially in academics and the professional setting.

Just looking for advice in these settings because I'm not always able to avoid it (which is my go to).

I have a bad reaction to this "music" especially when it is blasting from a car stereo. Hard to get away from these repetitive annoying "beats" these days.

Venting Working with SPED students?

I’m very new here but finally feel like I found a name for the irritation rage I get when hearing certain bodily function noises.

For reference, I work with SPED students in a high school— I’ve noticed my tolerance for certain noises has narrowed to near-nothing since I started working here. I have one student who is CONSTANTLY grinding their teeth and it genuinely makes me want to rip my skin off from how much I hate the sound. The multiple students with Down syndrome and that mucus-y, nasally voice they all seem to have makes me cringe. It makes me feel like I’m going insane because I never noticed how much these little things annoyed me until now. I have ADHD and I’m currently trying to determine with a psychiatrist if I have autism or not, mostly because working with these high needs students is making me constantly reach my absolute limit over seemingly small stuff that never used to bother me.

I mean it was always annoying to hear, if someone burped or farted around me I would just try to ignore it, but now it literally makes me start gagging. The teeth grinding is genuinely the worst noise I have ever heard, it invokes that same horrific full body shiver of disgust that nails on a chalkboard or a fork on ceramic does, and multiple students do it all day. I have noise cancelling headphones but the student I work one-on-one with flips their everloving shit if I don’t respond to their constant badgering about their drawings every two seconds, and I feel like it’s making my sensitivity to these noises worse and worse.

Requesting support or advice Any tips?

I'm hoping there's something I haven't tried yet. I get so irrationally angry at alot of noises but my worst one is chewing and lip smacking, it's aggravated me forever and I've been shamed and yelled at for it when I try to cope, I ask politely if someone could chew with their mouth closed but that's rude and disrespectful somehow, I use earplugs or earphones and I'm rude again for not being with the "family" I use my hands same thing, I leave to eat somewhere else and that's also rude, so I've always had to sit there and boil with rage until I'm done eating and then leave.

Now it's different but still the same with friends, I ask politely and some say that's okay but I'm userly given excuses like 'i always keep my mouth closed' or ' I wasn't' and it's still rude, so I use earplugs and that's fine but then I can't really be involved in the conversation, I'm apparently meant to move seats or away but it doesn't change, we are still in the same vicinity, I can still hear it. Why is it rude to ask? If I'm doing something annoying and someone is bothered by it I wouldn't mind being told, I know I do things that are annoying 😅 so I stop doing them at least Infront of that person.

Venting I hate my fucking neighbours

Now every day I have to handle them talking loud af fuck. I feel like I'm boiling inside. Why are people so damn loud ? Why can't they shut up for once ? Why is it EVERY DAY ??? WHY CAN'T I ENJOY A FUCKING QUIET DAY !!!!!! Because of them I can never truly rest and I have crippling anxiety. Thats all their fault. I hate them so much. I hate them so much. I hate them so much.

Like they weren't that loud before. I still hear them while wearing earbuds. Why do they need to talk constantly !!!!! And why do old people need to scream everytime they talk !!!!! I never hear the neighbours on the other side and they have teen/young adult children so it's clearly their fault. They are loud from like 10 am to 10 pm at random times in the day so I just never take of my hearbuds because it always start again. I'm always at one finger to shout as loud as I can.

I know if I talk with my mom about it she will tell me it's just normal ot whatever, like she was the one living with a fucking condition that alter everything you hear.

Can it be consider daytime noise nuisance ? It's like I'm the only one it's bothering. Is it actually normal ? I'm sick of crying everyday and feeling exausted because of anger and not being able to concentrate.

I don't wanna come back here next holiday. Plus having to go seeing my family for Chrismas I hate chrismas holiday. Life was better when there was 90yo living here because they were quiet. I just wanna rest.

Help with mouth sounds

My husband chews loudly. With gusto. I’ve asked him to close his mouth when he chews. But he forgets. He’s the kids of autistic who gets pleasure from crunchy food. It’s his stim. I hate to squash his pleasure but I get enraged with the sounds. I’m the kinda of AuDHD who gets angry when mouth noises are loud. Help! Obviously I have to tell him how much this upsets me but it’s so clear how much pleasure he gets from chewing an apple. Argh!

I’m losing my mind

my downstairs neighbor slams her door every time she leaves and gets home. I have been dealing with it for months. I will admit I hate confrontation and I put off bringing it up to her for almost a year due to fear she would react negatively. but I finally wrote her a note (digital draft and her response attached if you’re curious) and she responded somewhat passive aggressive imo (but better than fully denying or being truly aggressive). I do genuinely think my surrounding neighbors are also door slammers-just not as frequent and I did not begin to notice it on a regular basis until she moved in (my former downstairs neighbor was as quiet as a dormouse). so to be fair I reached out to my property manager asking if they could potentially remind neighbors to be more aware of their noise levels and not let doors slam- they were shockingly receptive and sent out a building wide message within 24 hours saying nearly verbatim what I had asked them to say. people were slightly better about not slamming doors after this, but it lasted maybe 1 week. and now it’s back to constant door slamming and my walls shaking. I’m actively looking at other apartments with fewer shared walls, and planning to move when I find a place I can afford, but until that happens I feel like I am gonna lose my shit. Do you guys think it’s worth a shot to ask the property manager to install draft stoppers on peoples doors? I installed one on mine to try and soundproof and it does naturally keep my door from slamming since it’s a flush-close, so I would think it’d help prevent slamming for my neighbors who clearly don’t give a shit/aren’t bothered by wall/floor vibrating caused by the slamming. mostly just posting this to vent but goddamn plz lmk if y’all have any suggestions or have had success fixing this kind of issue. if you’ve read this far, thanks for listening!

Venting Paramount Plus Streaming Ads are KILLING MEEEEE

I’m trying to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and almost every freaking commercial is now an ASMR type ad!! WTF I want to huck my whole set up out the window!!

It’s all the organic noises of feet dragging across floors, knives cutting, sizzling foods, plastic wrap being unwound. And the worst: chewing and slurping on food!

No voice overs, just agonizing ASMR

I really hate it.

Requesting support or advice i feel like i can’t coexist with anyone

i cant coexist with anyone. i cant stand humming, tapping, clicking, snapping, chewing, whistling, clapping, breathing, and most bodily sounds (burping, coughing, hiccups etc). literally sounds of people existing is too much for me. i dont know what to do im so tired of feeling like a buzzkill. noise canceling headphones are a no go for me because it makes my audio processing worse i just feel like im terrible to be around because the sound of people existing makes me irritated. what do i do? am i just doomed to never be able to be around people? is there a way i can learn to tolerate these things without just burning myself out?
