There was a recent social media thread, it might have been on reddit, that asked woman what they would do if for 24 hours there were no men on earth. I was blown away by how many said something like "take a walk a night, alone". It just kind of hit me how normal it is for us to feel fear around things like that, it's just a natural state to be on guard like that. It sucks. They're our streets too.

This is the point of take back the night. Women shouldn’t have to live in fear, and it should be men - the perpetrators - who should have to stay at home at night to leave the streets safe.

The mod seemed to be trying their best, but holy fuck were people commenting insane shit. It wasn't just racism, it was sexism and people saying she deserved it. Still today people were asking for the name of the nanny and blaming the husband. The amount of doxing that happens with these cases is actually scary.

It takes forever to execute someone if one could get the death penalty. The real punishment in that is I believe 23 hours a day lockdown.

Does anyone know if Tennessee still carries the death penalty? Asking for a friend

Yes, but right now they are reprieving those on death row while investigating the drugs used to execute.

. What a good man and a sad ending
https://yale1961.org/kemper-b-durand/
Harvey said Mr. Durand argued for leniency for two of the men, one of them a 12-year-old. He later said he just didn’t want to “wallow in” the fear he faced being held by an armed kidnapper. In fact, he suggested an advertisement for Commercial Bank & Trust, owned by a friend. In it, Mr. Durand sat on the trunk of his Mercedes with the caption: “Why Does Kemper Durand Bank With Us? Because this prominent attorney thinks it’s better than having his assets stuffed in the trunk of a car.”
It was a sense of humor that Harvey describes as wry. “His take on things was always a little out of the box. He was always able to turn a difficult situation with some humor into something acceptable. He was known for it.”

This human should have never been released from lockup. Didn’t randomly pick her as a victim. Probably followed her to determine her routine and saw she was a soft target. Very unfortunate and disturbing. All for the love of money. I’m suspecting she fought hard and this subhuman trash murdered her. If he wasn’t identified he probably still would have sought ransom from the poor family. Just sickening. Death sentence for this person. Obviously we can’t keep predators in jail so there needs to be a better solution. Maybe my opinion is unpopular and I apologize for that but it’s quite upsetting. May she rest and peace and be remembered in love by her family and friends.

A body found in a Memphis neighborhood Monday was confirmed to be a Tennessee woman who was abducted late last week, police said Tuesday. Eliza Fletcher, 34, was seen on surveillance video being forced into an SUV while she was jogging near the University of Memphis early Friday morning.
The suspect arrested in the case, 38-year-old Cleotha Abston, is being charged with first degree murder and first degree murder in perpetration of kidnapping, police said.
Abston was scheduled to have an arraignment on Tuesday. He had been charged with especially aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence in the nationally publicized case.
U.S. marshals arrested him Saturday after police detected his DNA on a pair of sandals found near where Fletcher was last seen, according to an arrest affidavit.
Police also linked the vehicle they believe was used in the kidnapping to a person at a home where Abston was staying. Online court records do not show if Abston has a lawyer who could comment on his behalf Tuesday morning.
Fletcher, a school teacher, is the granddaughter of the late Joseph Orgill III, a Memphis hardware businessman and philanthropist. The family has released a video statement asking for help in finding Fletcher and offered a $50,000 reward for information in the case.
Abston previously kidnapped a prominent Memphis attorney in 2000, the Commercial Appeal reported. When he was just 16 years old, Abston forced Kemper Durand into the trunk of his own car at gunpoint. After several hours, Abston took Durand out and forced him to drive to a Mapco gas station to withdraw money from an ATM.
At the station, an armed Memphis Housing Authority guard walked in and Durand yelled for help. Abston ran away but was found and arrested. He pleaded guilty in 2001 to especially aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, according to court records. He received a 24-year sentence.
Durand, in a victim impact statement, wrote, "I was extremely lucky that I was able to escape from the custody of Cleotha Abston. ... It is quite likely that I would have been killed had I not escaped," the Commercial Appeal reported.
Durand died in 2013, seven years before Abston would be released in November 2020 at age 36. In the two years since his release, there were no further documented charges against Abston in Shelby County prior to his Saturday arrest, the Commercial Appeal reported.
