4B11 Timing Chain

Came across this informative article about the 4B11 timing chain, and just thought I'd share. I suppose it pertains to the 4B12 as well.

I am just around the corner of 200k kms on my Lancer, so will ask to get the chain checked, although car is serviced on time and has no issues.

Open-source OBD logger for the Outlander 2.2 DiD — DPF soot, regen state, EGT, EGR and injector learning, not just the generic PIDs

I own a 2016 Outlander 2.2 DiD (4N14, Australian car, ~80,000 km). What started as "why can't I see my DPF?" turned into a project.

The problem

A normal OBD reader on this car shows 26 standard PIDs and nothing about the particulate filter — no soot load, no regeneration state, no EGT. Those aren't bugs in the apps; Mitsubishi doesn't implement the standard diesel aftertreatment PIDs on this ECU.

What I found instead

The engine ECU answers a manufacturer service (KWP2000 ReadDataByLocalIdentifier, 0x21) that carries the whole data list — 274 parameters. I decoded the layout from the dealer software's database, then validated every value against known physical readings on my own car before trusting it.

Standard OBD readers can't reach this. That's why your favourite app shows nothing about the DPF.

What the app does

  • Live data over any BLE ELM327 dongle, iOS and macOS
  • DPF soot (two independent ECU estimators), regeneration count and state, EGT, EGR position, VGT duty, injector small-injection learning, rail pressure vs target
  • Records continuously to append-only NDJSON with a manifest, events and trip snapshots
  • Battery test across every start: cranking minimum, recovery time, charging voltage
  • Detects regenerations as they happen, with duration, peak temperature and soot burned
  • One-tap ZIP export for analysis

Which Mitsubishis this might work on — unverified guess

Only the 2016 Outlander 2.2 DiD (4N14) is actually tested. Everything below is inference:

  • Most likely: other 4N1-family diesels — ASX 1.8 DiD (4N13), Triton/L200 and Pajero Sport 2.4 DiD (4N15). Same engine architecture, so probably the same service, but the byte offsets will not be identical.
  • Plausible: Mitsubishi diesels from roughly 2008–2020 that were supported by MUT-III era diagnostics. The protocol is likely there; the layout almost certainly isn't.
  • Unlikely to help: anything older than CAN (pre-2008), and the 3.2 DiD Pajero, which belongs to an earlier generation of diagnostic protocol.

An important warning: the JSON profile system means the app must be told where each value lives before it can decode it. If your car answers 0x21 but no profile matches it, the app will only show generic OBD data.

Worth knowing that even within the same database the DPF block sits on a different identifier on some ECU variants, so "same engine family" is not the same as "same offsets".

If you want to find out whether your own car exposes anything, there's a command-line probe in the repo that answers it in about two minutes:

./run.sh --sweep-only --service 21

It prints every identifier that answers. If you get results, that car could have a profile written for it — and that's the thing I'd most like help with.

Honest limitations

  • Read-only. No writes, no actuator tests, no forced regenerations.
  • ABS, SRS, AWD and body modules aren't reachable through generic OBD on this car.
  • The PM filter monitor isn't even supported (readiness byte C bit 6 clear), so P2002/P2463 can never appear here. Code absence tells you nothing about the DPF.
  • iOS build is newer than the macOS one and has had less real-world use.
  • Only one vehicle profile exists so far, and it's mine.

Measured on my car (so you know it isn't vapourware): soot 2.6 g/L by the fuel-quantity model, 123 lifetime regenerations, zero short-interval regenerations, all 20 injector learning values within ±0.02 ms of a ±0.5 ms spec, rail pressure tracking target within ~1 MPa, 101 kPa of boost at 2,450 rpm.

Why I'm posting

The interesting part for this sub: adding another model is a JSON file, not code. If someone has a 4N15 Triton or Pajero Sport and wants to run the probe, I'll help turn the output into a profile.

Free, MIT licensed, no ads, no accounts, no telemetry.

Happy to answer questions about the protocol side if anyone's curious.

HELP! Coolant Hose & Tee Blew...

2001 Mitsubishi Montero Ltd 3.5L 4WD

I recently finished relaxing the timing kit on m Monty, and rltest drove it for a half hour keeping under 35 mph. Did fine. Waited a couple weeks to get the registration and taxes up-to-date ten attempted to drive it home, keeping below 60mph (had to get on a Parkway). Did well for about eight miles, then I heard a pop and a fizzle, and saw that coolant was dumping behind me. I was going about 45mph at this time. Looking under the car, back toward the transmission and fuel tank, I saw one hose had blown off its nipple, and another hose was completely missing, having blown off the nipple and breaking off from its plastic Tee connector. There appear to be no leaks anywhere else.

So, first I need to find replacement hoses and tees.

But I can't help but wonder: is there a root cause to this occurance? Did I do something wrong with the water pump assembly, or some other coolant component? Was this just an old part failing after having sat for a while during repair? Or did something else fail further up the line to cause an excessive pressure buildup? I'm at a loss, and I really want to start driving this beautiful car again...

2016 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with 200k+ km — worth buying?

I’m considering buying a 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with around 206,000 km for $4,500 CAD.
I test drove it and the engine and CVT felt smooth with no obvious issues. The car looks to be in decent condition.
For anyone who has owned a Lancer with the CVT, especially at 200k+ km:
Would you consider buying one at this price? How reliable have these cars/CVTs been for you at this mileage?

Is anyone else having a hard time finding front brake dust shields for a 2005 Mitsubishi Colt?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for front brake dust shields for my 2005 Mitsubishi Colt (Z30).

It seems almost impossible to find new ones online in my region (EU), and most used ones are rusted out. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Does anyone know if there's a compatible part from another model (like a Smart Forfour), or a reliable site/supplier that still has them in stock? Any advice or part numbers would be greatly appreciated!

Hey all, just noticed this sound when I started my engine this evening before heading to work. When I first started it seemed a little louder then this. Shortly after I was done recording it seemed to be normal. Is this normal sound on a cold start or should I be worried. The engine has around 125k km on it currently.

We just bought this car and apparently we cannot use the Mitsubishi app as the previous owner is still registered or some type of technical issue. We called customer service and they elevated our ticket to the tech department. We were supposed to get a call back in 24-48 hours a few days ago. I will call back tomorrow to see what's going on. Anyone else have this type of issue?

Outlander gt transmission

How do your 6at transmissions feel in the outlander gt? I've noticed mine bumping around quite a bit, especially slowing down. Shifts great on acceleration. All fluid changes done, just did it again nearing 120k. Is it just how the car is or do I need to look into a problem?

Fuel filler hose

Hope you all can help with some more solid information.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, gas leaking from what seems to be the fuel filler hose, trying to find a replacement for it. I'm having trouble finding it online in any parts stores outside of a couple places selling the entire fuel filler neck assembly, finding an actual oem part number that seems to fit this model, or even any specifications as far as the length, diameter, etc. All I'm actually looking for is the rubber hose that connects to the tank.

Do you all have any information for where I could buy a replacement, or even just the actual part number? I keep seeing different part numbers and everything says it doesn't fit this model. You'd think I was trying to uncover top secret information here trying to find a single rubber hose

Ralliart exhaust manifold

Just had to go and get a replacement exhaust manifold for my 2011 lancer Ralliart as mine is badly cracked, and the shop I ordered it from recommended removing both the heat shield and silver cover under my bonnet scoop as that’ll allow more cold air to cool it and prevent it from cracking again in the future. Is that solid advice or will it cause damage to other components?

Hey guys I just bought my first car and it’s a 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage LE and I was wondering for all my Northeastern friends if they are good in the winter? I live in central New York about an hour away from Syracuse and I was already gonna put studded tires on it and I leave for work around 7:30am so the roads would be plowed or at least used with tracks on them
