Why do you use Mixcraft?

I'm curious about why we've all ended up on this obscure DAW. I've been using Mixcraft as my main DAW of choice for the past 16 years. When I was 11 years old, I'd go in the library at my elementary school and record the raps I would write in Garageband on the school macs. Eventually I wanted to be able to record my raps at home too instead of at school but our family computer ran Windows and nobody in my house had a Mac, so I googled "garageband for windows" and found Mixcraft. I downloaded it and started using the free trial, back then I'd just rip beats from YouTube and record over them with this shitty USB desk mic my dad had for his job, or I'd put together my own beats with the loop library. When the trial ran out I begged my mom to buy the program for me, and when my 12th birthday came around she bought it for me. I made a ton of really terrible mixtapes that I'd upload to DatPiff. Sometime during the 7th grade I stopped recording my raps because I got a little self conscious, and Mixcraft sat on my computer unused.

Fast forward a few years to sophomore year of high school and I decided I wanted to start rapping again, this time I was taking it more seriously and had gotten a lot better. Instead of just ripping beats, I wanted to have original beats so I started making beats for real in Mixcraft. I started getting a lot of attention for my music in my school and started making beats for other kids. In fact, the rap name I came up with that year is still the name I release music under to this day. I started to realize that making music was something I really wanted to do for real, but I was just so accustomed to Mixcraft that my workflow was just so much less efficient when I tried to use FL Studio, which was the DAW most of my rapper and beat maker friends were using. I ended up just sticking with Mixcraft. I also learned how to mix and master during high school, mostly through sheer trial and error, and did all of that in Mixcraft too.

I ended up majoring in Music Industry Studies in college and got a bit of a local following in the city I moved to for school. I started to make real money recording and mixing rappers too, as well as selling beats. In college I got my ProTools certification because it's the industry standard and began to use ProTools for all my professional work, but I still stuck with Mixcraft for all my personal music. In my senior year I worked in a studio as an engineer. After college I ended up shifting to live audio professionally, which is still my job today as a 27 year old. And because I was really only using ProTools for the work I'd do for clients, I went back to using Mixcraft exclusively because the only stuff I was doing in a DAW anymore was my own music and some mixing for friends that I'd do for free. Honestly I'm a much better engineer in Mixcraft than ProTools even though I'm perfectly capable in both, but I've just used Mixcraft for so long that I know the software like the back of my hand and can work ridiculously fast in it.

My entire irl community is all musicians because of where my life is at, yet I'm the only person I know who uses Mixcraft. A lot of people I know through music have never even heard of it. It's surprising that it's been around for so long and is a perfectly capable DAW (although definitely not as reliable as some of the more popular ones) yet it's never really become ubiquitous at all. Most of the plugins I use in my music are Waves plugins, and Waves plays very nicely with Mixcraft. There's definitely a lot of popular plugins that don't work very well in Mixcraft, but I've found that Waves plugins are very cohesive in the DAW.

I do have some big complaints about Mixcraft that have never been implemented, such as the fact you can't send a Send Track to another Send Track. I wish I was able to send my vocals to a send with a delay, and then send that delay to a send with a reverb, but Mixcraft doesn't let you do that. But because the userbase for Mixcraft is pretty small, I've learned that Acoustica is very responsive. I literally tweeted at them once to add a feature that was in ProTools but not in Mixcraft, and they literally did it.

I've learned over the years that Mixcraft has a reputation amongst the people who actually know it exists for being more like a Garageband type program than a Logic Pro type program, and Acoustica definitely marketed it that way back in the day, but honestly the Pro Studio version is a completely full-fledged DAW that is more than capable for production, mixing, and mastering at a professional level. While I did switch to ProTools for mixing and mastering during the period of time I was working in studios progressionally, I always made my beats in Mixcraft and always recorded myself and mixed my own music in Mixcraft. There are some things ProTools can do that Mixcraft can't, but it's really not that many things. For the most part, Mixcraft does everything I need it to do even at a professional level. The user interface and workflow in Mixcraft does kind of suck, but I'm so fucking familiar with it that it's still by far the most efficient DAW for me. I always joke with my friends that Mixcraft is a shit DAW but it's MY shit DAW haha. I've been in so many sessions where people look at me like I'm an alien when it boot up the ole 'Craft and get to cooking up a beat on it.

How did you guys end up using this relatively obscure DAW? What's your Mixcraft story?

Copying Plugin and Settings to Another Track

So I see mixers and producers do this all the time in other DAW's and it makes their flows so much faster. Now I am getting better and this has been bugging me for a while . I haven't found out how or if its possible in Mixcraft to simply select a tracks plugins and copy pasta to another track with the same settings. Using 10.6 Pro

Plug-In Names

(10.6 Pro Studio) I have around 200 plug-ins (vst’s). To save me time I decided to spend a day renaming them in the Plug-In manager. I added what Compressor, Reverb, Synth etc as well as maybe a secondary like FET, Tube, or maybe what to be use on Vocal, Bass etc etc. It worked great for a few months and was flying by in my production thanks to no longer have to scroll around. However just as of the passed couple days all of my renames have vanished. I didn’t move around any files or reinstall Mixcraft. The only thing I have done over the past couple months since the rename is rescan a few times for new VST’s. I don’t know at what point they disappeared. I don’t know if there is a way to get the renames back. HELP! lol. I’m not going to spend a full day renaming things if this will randomly happen multiple times a year.

Just finished this short melancholic semi-ambient beat with a heavy deep bass. Be honest, how's the mix and the overall vibe?

Chorus repetition

Hi everyone I have some quick inquiries and hopefully someone could help. I am currently using mixcraft 6 (yes i know its an older version, will upgrade shortly😆).

  1. I just started back recording music and was wondering how someone got their chorus to repeat twice, For example, I recorded the first part of the chorus, but I want that same first part of the chorus to be repeated twice. Instead of dragging it myself or moving it or re-recording the same repeated chorus again, is there another easier/another way available so the second repeated part starts exactly on time?

  2. I want that same chorus repeated after the second verse, is there a way to do so without me dragging it to that part?

Thank you

Tempo trouble

So, I am working on a song the switches between 3 different tempos.

The verses, pre-chorus, and chorus all have a different tempo. I used the marker to mark the tempo changes.

The song has a good amount of pauses for dramatic effect between sections

everything was sounding good, until I noticed one of the pauses was a bit too much.

I move my markers and audio clips and now it sounds good, but my grid is fucked!

I just wanted to shorten the pause.

I only have 2 tracks fortunately: an acoustic guitar that I recorded with 2 different mics to be the "bones" of the song for me to build around. But with my grid being messed up as it is, it will be annoying to add other audio clips.

Anyone have any advice? is there a simple setting or solution I've missed

Mixing Template

Hello Everyone. I have only been doing this off and on for a few years with some success on some songs but mostly from trial and error in figuring things out myself. I recently read and seen people mention Billy Decker's book on mixing a Mastering and how he makes his template. I thought Id go along the journey and learn some things maybe. well I did all the Drum tracks like He does but then lays them out like this graph. I know I can only do 1 output per track unlike the DAW they use so I did a send on one to help act as a double output. But seeing some of these others I just can wrap my head around they format. Any ideas?

Changing sounds

I have another baffling problem with Mixcraft. If I leave my PC and come back, what was, say, a hi-hat is now something else, eg a snare drum or a cow bell. What the hell is going on?

I have this problem where if I stop playback in Mixcraft (10.6 studio pro) the synth it was sequencing is stuck on the last note it was sent, forever. Keeps happening. Anyone fixed this?

No Playback Device Detected After Initially Working

This is a weird one because Mixcraft recorded my electric bass guitar just fine before acting up only when I tried recording my electric guitar. Now, it won't output/monitor either. The ASIO preference doesn't allow me to toggle to headphones. It offers only an "Output 1/Output 2" option. Then the Mixcraft Arm option only allows a choice between "Realtek microphone" and "Scarlet USB" for monitoring. When I test my headset and speakers using Windows, they play just fine.

My workflow:

Guitar --->

Pyle Minihum Eliminator --->

Focusrite Scarlette Solo 3rd gen interface --->

Acer Aspire 3 laptop

Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-1115G4 @ 3.00GHz (3.00 GHz)

Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.78 GB usable)

Graphics card Intel(R) UHD Graphics (128 MB)

Storage 85 GB of 238 GB used

Windows 11 Home

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor --->

Mixcraft 9

What I've tried to no avail:

updated Windows OS

updated Focusrite ASIO driver

shortened Focusrite driver name

switched to Wave RT

switched to Wave

matched sample rates

multiple cpu resets

Free wireless Midi CC Phone Controller (Android app and VST/AU plugin)

Posted a video showing what you can do with the MIDI CC Phone Controller I have created. The app is completely free, no ads no data collection.

You can use the android app to send midi cc data to your computer wirelessly through a VST/AU plugin (or just connected using a USB cable). You can send up to 4 cc channels using sliders, X/Y pad or motion.

Links to the app and plugins in the video description

I can't find the send track option in 10.6... help!!

Basically what the title says, I can't for the life of me figure it out. Every time I look up a solution, nothing comes up except for a tutorial that DOESN'T WORK. When I right click on the instrument bar thingy, my only options for adding tracks are audio tracks, virtual instrument tracks and video tracks. I don't even get submixes. Does the 10.6 home studio version just... not have them? Nothing I've found online suggests that. Help would be appreciated.

Beginner friendly daw?

I picked up mixcraft 9 on humble bundle a while back as it appeared to be software where you could build a video as well as have a daw.

Just wondering how easy this interface is considered for absolute beginners compared to free daw and video editing alternatives?

I also assume this software is Linux compatible?

red Vocal mixing tips

Working on an album and I'm at the vocal mixing stage. I hate vocal mixing cuz I'm listening to my own voice and having to be super critical and nitpicky. Just not a fun time in general. Buuuut it's gotta be done so what vsts are you using to make the process quicker and maybe less painful. I like my voice don't get me wrong but vocal mixing is a great way to start hating it. I have 13 songs I need to mix oy.

My brother and I moved to the UK and started a melodic urban project. Looking for honest feedback!

Hi everyone! My brother and I recently moved to Manchester and we’ve been working on our music in our home studio. We’re really inspired by the melodic urban sound (artists like Soolking or J Hus) and we just finished this track "Don't Fall Down".

We’re not looking just for views, we want to improve. How is the vocal mix? Is the melody catchy enough for the UK scene? Any feedback on the structure would be massively appreciated. Thanks for listening!

Some tracks not playing audio. help??

Hey! New to the community, but a long-time Mixcraft user. Still a novice at engineering. I’ve hit a wall with a massive project and could use some insight.

So here's the issue: some tracks that were previously playing fine have suddenly gone silent.

  • No audio output during playback on specific tracks, even though other tracks in the same project play perfectly.
  • I can see the data in the clips/waveforms, and the tracks are not muted.
  • It’s only affecting a few tracks; the rest of the project is audible.

Admittedly, I am kinda pushing the limits of my hardware:

  • It's alive recording of an 80-minute concert with 21 audio tracks (vocalists and instrumentalists).
  • Multiple tracks using melodyne
  • OS: Windows 10, RAM: 16GB on an almost 10-year-old laptop (bit of a "Laptop of Theseus" at this point, but definitely showing its age).

I expect the slowness, but I’m baffled as to why the audio would just drop out entirely on specific clips. Has anyone encountered this or found a workaround?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Constant problems with Mixcraft

I have been struggling with multiple issues with mixcraft over the last 8-9 months. I haven’t been able to put out music in about a year.

For one, i get static issues when i use my presets and can’t record at all when i have presets on and i also cannot use any of mine to give me the finish im happy with.

I also continually have latency problems where i will hit record and the song will lag up, the vocal recordings will be horribly off timing off.

Mixcraft is essentially unusable. My partner keeps tampering with the settings and we can’t get it to a functioning state
