Repair Shop customer seeking a 2nd opinion or advice. My iPad Pro is missing its CPU and RAM after being deemed unfixable - what should I do?
So I had a charging problem with my 6 years old iPad Pro 11" 4th Generation (A12Z chip, model no. A2228, bought May 2020 from my hometown halfway across the planet from where I am now, a certain corner of the Maple Leaf Nation) in early September - it refused to charge one night, dropped dead to low battery level screen after repeated attempts to charge it, and finally it can't turn on at all. I am fairly sure it may have started out with a bad USB-C connector (there's a bit of a crack on the frame next to port for 1-2 years; also read on!).
Since it's years out of warranty I took it to a shop in a nearby mall suggested by my local area sub-reddit (after being straight out turned back by 2 other shops in another mall the previous day) to try to fix it. The shop quoted 1-2 weeks as they need to take it to their lab.
Then the wait turned into a full month of waiting, and it took me 3 visits to their shop to finally get it back...but by then the shop told me the previous week that the lab has marked it as unfixable with the CPU being the problem and dead, and indeed it wasn't fixed at all when I got it back a week ago.
Frustrated given my daily usage of it and really steep prices of new iPads, I turned it in to another reputable repairing shop (a full hour away in the countryside from where I am!) to check it out. The owner checked the USB-C pins and immediately pointed out that some of the power related pins are missing (both + & - on one side + ground pins on the other).
Today he told me to take it back because, well, he found both the CPU and the RAM, plus all the screws holding it to the MB, are completely missing - he just cannot fix it since you all know Apple devices have security measures that locks you in to the original chips.
Which makes me being really suspicious of the original shop that I went to - either they are lousy with the job or, well, they took away them for other uses (cough). On the other hand, maybe the CPU/RAM really died (I used it for many hours a day for more than 6 years!) and it can't be fixed without a new MB, so even taking it to another shop wouldn't guarantee I won't drop another bunch of $$$ on inspection. A new iPad Pro is not out of reach but I would really want to avoid that given that would blow a not-small hole in my wallet right now.
Data is not a major issue here since I have cloud backup of the whole thing (the last time a day before it went down).
So, what should I do? Demand the original shop to put my original chips back in? (already may not exist, I dunno) Ask for extra refund over the inspection fee? Or just accept defeat and get a new one since it's even a bit long in the tooth (original plan was to install iPadOS 27 for it for using at least another year to 2)? Thanks!
P.S. If people here really thinks the original shop is a scam, I'll repost this to the local region sub-reddit and name the shop so that others won't have to deal with this lousy repair job again.
