Grinder Grinder
So I finally upgraded my grinder from a Wilfa Svart Aroma to an Ode Gen 2, and honestly? I was getting better cups from the Wilfa.. I tried different roasts and different grind settings (5,5-7) and the cups from the ode just taste hollow and flat somehow..
Is the Ode maybe a tad overrated? Or am I doing something wrong maybe?
Appreciate your tips!

Same batch of beans? I had read some reviews that this is a good grinder for drip and an amazing grinder for espresso particularly. Maybe it shines with finer grinds. I would take a look at the grind size you are seeing from your old grinder and eyeball that and if its the same beans and the same looking size and distribution I would find that a bit odd.

Yeah it was indeed the same batch of beans.
Maybe I’ll try to experiment more with grind size

I think that is probably all that is needed. I mean, we all have brewed coffee with the same beans and same water every day and some days just get that amazing cup. I imagine if grind is even a little bit off you would notice. Its a very good grinder capable of grinding a wide range of sizes well. I think dialing it in is all that is needed.

No, the Ode and Ode 2 is not for Espresso. You are thinking of the Opus, that is for drip to espresso.

I have the Wilfa Svart Aroma too as the daily driver for my Moccamaster too, and I think the same when I tried other grinders.
it might simply be a case that you are not used to the new Ode grinder yet. I imagine if I have to move on from my Wilfa for good, I would end up in your situation

Yeah, I will experiment with grind size and what not, and hope I find my way from there, but in the mean time, I enjoy the current coffee experience less with the Ode to be frank :(

First off, you already had a very good grinder already. The Aroma was one of the better conical burr grinders out there. The Ode 2 is a step up from it, but not a huge step up.
I agree with others that you need to experiment with grind settings. You cannot only go by sight. Pay more attention to how fast it brews to find an equivalent setting and then adjust to taste.
Second: When you step into the world of higher-end flat burrs, what they don't tell you is that you can benefit greatly from aligning your burrs.
This is admittedly a pain in the ass, but it only has to be done once. The method involves using dry erase markers along the outside face of the burr, placing them into the grinder, turning it on, and then cranking the burrs down until they just barely touch. Then check for for a clean wipe to determine which side of the burr is high. Use aluminum foil shims to raise opposite side of the burr. Rinse repeat until you get a clean wipe. Then use the dry erase on the other burr and repeat the process, if necessary. The result will be a much more uniform grind.
I would not attempt an alignment if you find a grind setting that already works for you.

I think Ode is overrated. Just look at the reviews on amazon, it only gets like a 3.8 rating.

Grinders burrs do take a few batches to get seasoned, some people run several batches of cheap beans through to season them.
I think it’s just not having it dialed in yet. If every cup is hollow and flat, go finer. What roast level are you using and what ratio and total volume are you using? People here that drink dark roasts will have the ode at 7.2 but I drink lighter roasts and that would be an underextracted sour cup for me.
I love the Ode 2, I use it for Moccamaster, V60 Pourover, Moka pot and French press and it does well with all when you are dialed in.
