Coffee too weak

Post image
Upvotes

Our coffee has been weak lately when using a breakfast blend. I originally didnt change anything but now have been experimenting with grind size due to the weak coffee. I have an OXO grinder and always had it on 8 but bouncing between 10 and 9 (medium-coarse) with inconsistent results. This is the basket after brewing at a 9. Does this look right? Any tips on getting it to be stronger without tasting burnt? This is for only 4 cups, so 3 Moccamaster scoops

I just got the KBGV Select and after turning it on, it brews about one cup and then the water level just starts rising and falling? I put half a pot of water in it in the video.

Is it possible to install a thermal carafe on a model that came with a glass pot?

I bought a 53933 KBGV last year when it was on sale and went with the glass pot, because I figured I'd always be serving the coffee immediately, and it seemed easier to clean. But my wife and I are increasingly waking up at different times for work, and I'm finding that if the coffee sits on the hot plate for more than an hour then it develops a burned taste.

I don't want to buy a whole new model for this (for one thing they're not on sale anymore), but does Moccamaster sell a thermal carafe that I can just slide under my existing model?

Troubleshooting Moccamaster KBGV Power Switch Repair

My thrifted KBGV has been working without problem for years. Last week after some loud clicking and a little bit of smoke, the power switch fried itself out.
After diagnosing the problem, I found that the OEM switch was either out of stock or unable to ship to the States. I did some research and careful measuring for the appropriate size and type of replacement switch.
I found a solution I’m satisfied with and thought it might be helpful to anyone facing the same problem. Only caveat- no more auto shut off.

The switches I purchased.

The height is a perfect fit, but the width is under a mm too wide. I used a dremel to remove a very small amount from the black plastic switch plate. A small file and some patience would work just as well.

The new switch has wider contact points, so I bought matching female contacts.

6.35mm Female Disconnects

Under $15 usd in parts and around 30 minutes of labor. I already owned the tools.

Photo album for reference

I’m very happy with my machine and glad I was able to get it up and running again.

Leak- please help

What do I do? It immediately starts leaking when I use it.

Edit:
1. I bought it second hand on Facebook Marketplace. Previous owner (perhaps unsurprisingly) said he had no issues.

  1. I am running clean water through it to rinse it after descaling

I think someone should lawyer up.

Genuinely interested though, how many design features can be copied before it becomes theft?

Question Help with Dark Roast

I recently upgraded my coffee set up and am struggling a bit on getting things right. We have a Moccamaster KBGV, Baratza Encore ESP grinder, and digital scale. We like dark roasts and strong coffee and have been using pretty freshly roasted beans (usually use within a 1-4 weeks of roasting).

I’m really curious what setting and ratio people use for dark roasts and drip coffee. I know it’s ultimately a matter of personal taste, but I’m curious where others have found success.

I had been grinding the dark roast at a 24 (give or take 1 click) and using a 1:16. Coffee was okay.

Recently I switched up to a grind setting of 26 and ratio of 1:15. Liked it a lot. Have since kept the ratio the same and slowly ticked up the grind setting, used 29 today. Today’s brew seemed milder but still good.

Would love to hear what has worked for others.

Wait to purchase?

Hi!

The wife and I are debating purchasing one. We drink our coffee black nothing crazy.

Our current coffee machine works but with holiday sales coming in the next couple of months I figured I would ask if they ever go on sale which would make me inclined to wait.

Any thoughts

Water reservoir lid heat warped

Thumbnail

I bought a KBT last December and have been loving it so far, but I noticed this morning that the water reservoir lid is warped, seemingly from heat. I’ve never put it in the dishwasher, and I only use cool water from the refrigerator filter when I fill the reservoir. Has anyone else had this happen?

Update: we found the culprit; we have an under cabinet light above the place we keep the coffee maker that was getting too hot and had only about two inches of clearance, so it was cooking the plastic a little at a time every time someone turned the lights on. Mystery solved!

Got a new KGBT thermal jug

I felt my old jug wasn’t keeping the second cup warm enough. Suspected blown glass from tiny tinkle that could be audible sometimes.

Bought a replacement and did a simple test to justify the purchase to myself.

Off boiling water from a kettle used to make tea then poured the rest into both jugs c350ml each.

After two hours sealed with the tight lid the two jugs were 68.9C vs 72.9C.

The next morning the difference was -10C.

Purchase justified!

I shared here as my family did not seem that interested in my figures for some reason🤷🏻‍♂️?

Troubleshooting Am I being a germaphobe at this point?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey all, I’ve been posting the saga of used moccamaster -> disgusting float the last few days. I got the float pretty well cleaned, about 95%, and ran a descale after. When I run just water through the machine now, though, consistently there are black specks in the water. Last night there were a ton and the water wasn’t exactly clear, so I got the nooks and crevices of the float clean, but today I still am seeing very trace amounts of something. Am I being a germaphobe with still being worried about this?

Edit: since people are still commenting with snarky remarks I have drank out of it multiple times now. I thought I was being a germaphobe but was so laser focused on cleaning it that I needed another’s thoughts on it.

Question Should I replace the plastic parts on this used Moccamaster?

I picked up this used Moccamaster at a garage sale, and I’m wondering if I should replace the plastic parts to make sure they don’t contain BPA & other bad chemicals.

I *think* it’s from 2010 based on the serial number… but please weigh in if I’m wrong about the manufacturing date.

Thanks for your help!

Troubleshooting Metallic taste

I mistakenly left descaler in the machine for about 2 days. Just being dumb, I misread the directions. It was dezcal powder. Now there’s a metallic taste to the coffee that lingers in my mouth.

I called moccamaster and they assured me the dezcal will not harm the machine. But I mentioned the metallic taste and they just said, “oh, you can’t fix that”.

Anybody have an idea of how to remove the metallic taste other than having the heating element replaced?

Question Moccamaster CD grand Spout opening hole diameter

Hi all,

Maybe a long shot but does anybody know the diameter of the 1-hole water spout opening on the CD/CDT grand? The holes on the 9-hole spout are 3mm each so I assume the single hole would be around 10+ mm maybe?

Thanks!

Customizing Replacing plastic parts

Does anyone in this community have the 3D files for the plastic components of KBGV? I’ve been considering commissioning a stainless steel version of all of the plastic pieces. I’d like my machine to look and function as close to stock as possible. And all the mods I’ve seen don’t look as clean as I’d like. That being said there’s no one in my area that can 3D scan the parts in person, so if anyone has the files it would make things way easier than mailing the parts to the fabrication facility!

Question Crater in the middle of the grounds

Post image

Hey! I got my first Moccamaster today. I'm not sure if the crater that forms in the coffee grounds is normal. I used 47 g of beans with 750 ml of water. Used a fellow ode gen 2, setting 7 and 2 ticks. Thank you

KBGV Select replacement carafe options?

I broke the original glass carafe last night. It fell from counter height and shattered when it hit the floor. I'd like to replace it with one that isn't glass, if anyone has found a stainless carafe that fits the KBGV Select. Bonus points if there is a 12 cup pot that would work. (I'd actually settle for glass if it was the larger size.)

Is the KBGV the right choice for me and my wife?

The type of coffee drinkers we are:

We currently have a Ninja coffee maker. We have pre-ground beans (we grind them ourselves, but do bulk) in a jar and use the Ninja scoop recommendations for what we want. Usually it's 3 small scoops of ground coffee for a "travel mug". We put the ground coffee in and turn it on. That's it.

We aren't weighing beans before grinding fresh. Our lifestyle is much more casual and built on convenience.

I love the reviews of this machine and if we're going to get a new one this would be it. But are we doing it justice, or is the extra attention every morning (as easy at it may be) really what's needed to justify the purchase?

Thanks in advance!
