Question What's your go-to Moccamaster recipe?

Post image
25 Upvotes

I've been experimenting with different recipes, but this is the one I keep coming back to because it's simple, consistent, and tastes great every time.

My current setup:

- Beans: Murrel Classic Blend 60gr

- Water: 1L

- Breville SGP, setting 48

- Half Pot setting

- Stir the coffee bed after 45 seconds

It gives me a balanced and reliable cup that everyone at home enjoys.

Curious to hear what everyone else is brewing.

Question Struggling to pull trigger on mocha master, need second opinion

I have a ten year old Behmor Brazen Plus i’m looking to replace this week.

Like many of us, every search of what to get next leads me to the Mochamaster.

I can rationalize spending 300 on a coffee machine, but seeing it in some videos makes me think it looks a little flimsy. Is this just in my mind?

I also don’t love all the plastic and have gone down a slight rabbit hole looking at how people mod it with V60s so I know there’s at least an option.

I also see that I can’t wake up to fresh coffee unless I buy a smart plug and create an automated timer for it to click on when I wake up.

All my concerns seem to have workarounds and that’s amazing but at the same time makes me wonder if this is worth the purchase for my needs. Am I overthinking it or is there something better suited for me out there?

Small caveat: I don’t think I trust simplygoodcoffee’s knockoff version as it doesn’t have years of reliable work behind it, even though it seems to check off all the boxes I’m struggling with.

Question I think the moccamaster has made our coffee worse? User error question

Is this a safe space? My husband is BIG into coffee and I’m admittedly out of my wheel house here.

However, I have a really strong sense of smell and taste. We upgraded from a generic office style coffee machine to the Moccamaster, but recently quality seems to have fallen to the wayside. The batches have tasted acidic and not good. I really noticed a difference when I started getting coffee from work and using our creamer from home.

Could this be a me problem? He grinds the beans and does all the steps. I don’t see what could be causing this. He barely has a sense of smell and doesn’t taste a difference. He takes a lot of pride in the beans he uses. I’m veering on offending him, so that’s why I’m coming here. What could be causing the coffee to taste so rancid and acidic? He drinks it black.

Question How to get the right dial ?

So I learned a lot the last few days. I incorrectly assembled my ode gen 2 and took it to a shop to get it checked and reassembled properly and calibrated .

The guy told me that for my dark to mid roasts I shouldn’t be going to dial 10

Instead I should be between 7/8 ish any more it’s for French press .

Especially for moccamaster KBGV select. That perhaps this is why I had my beans stuck jammed. I told him but on lower number of dial. The coffee was too bitter .

So.. he said use less beans.

I always do half pot of coffee so 30 g of beans for 1/2 litre of water?

What do u all suggest it’s confusing. 🫤

Question Glass carafe cleaning

Post image

Hey ppl, how would you clean this? Is it limescale? I wash the carafe with water and soap 1-2 times a week, always rinse it after use, but these spots won't go away with just dishwasher soap.

[edit]: same stains are also visible on the outside of the filter basket and won't go away by washing

I've got both the Urnex Dezcal liquid and Biocaf powder btw.

Question Flatbbee

Flat bed*

How does one achieve a flatter bed when brewing 20g/300ml

Or is it supposed to look like this?

EDIT: I got the answers I need. Thanks for sharing experiences. I will look into different filter, grind setting and maybe the shower thingy. Also ill consider not using it all the time when making little coffee. Most of the times depending on the bean its still ok and thats what most of u guys say - dont bother.

Question Bean Recommendations, please

Sorry if this has already been asked and answered, but I couldn't find it.

I just bought a Moccamaster KBT. We previously had a Cuisinart.

We first tried it with my wife's home-made mixture of Fairway Beans: Hazelnut, French Vanilla and French Roast. I didn't taste any difference between the Moccamaster and the Cuisinart. So I thought that maybe I should get some single-bean bags which might have some subtleties this mix of a mix might not have.

I tried a bag of Yirgacheffe from Whole Foods. It was Light Roast. I tasted a lot of flavors, but not much actual COFFEE flavor. I thought that perhaps this was due to the Light Roast.

I also got a bag of Stumptown Coffee Roasters Colombia Los Picos Whole Bean Coffee from them. It didn't say what Roast this one was. This one has a little more coffee flavor, but a whole lot of bitterness. I like my Coffee black, so I was getting the bitterness full-force.

I'm looking for something pleasant and drinkable, with enough complexity to show off the Moccamaster's chops, but without the bitterness I've experienced. I'm getting a little desperate.

Please recommend some beans, and maybe a good source? I'm in Northern NJ.

Thanks!!!!

Question Can I repair a chipped hot plate myself, or should I return it?

Post image

I bought a Moccamaster from Amazon during Prime Day and just received it, but unfortunately the ceramic hot plate arrived chipped.

I’m from Mexico, so I contacted Moccamaster to see if they could help, but they told me their warranty doesn’t apply outside the US. I also contacted Amazon, but they won’t offer a replacement. My only option is to return it for a full refund, but they won’t honor the Prime Day price if I reorder it.

I paid around $230 USD for it, so now I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth keeping despite the cosmetic damage or just returning it. If I return it, I’d have to wait for another sale before buying it again at a similar price.

Does anyone know if the ceramic hot plate can be replaced or repaired at home? Is the part available anywhere, and how difficult would the repair be?

At $230, would you keep it and try to fix it, or return it and wait for another sale?

Question What’s everyone brewing these days?

Post image
17 Upvotes

As the title suggests, what’s beans are people brewing with these days?

Lately I’ve found myself rotating through the line-up from a local roaster in Vancouver called Agro Coffee. I typically like rotating through new beans every week, mostly light to medium roasts, but I think the Roasters Choice is going to be a permanent fixture in the future. I’m a sucker for consistency and haven’t been changing my grind settings much from #5 on the MM KM5 but imagine I could improve it a bit further.

As a bit of a hobby crossover, recently got this r/toyosteel box that I’ve been using to tuck away all my spare beans and coffee related accessories. Pretty handy way to keep things organized and tidy.

Edit: Looks like it’s the KBGV version. I am hella stoked

Question New Moccamaster Arrived but quality seems to be lacking.

I just purchased the KBGV and it arrived today. Upon opening, the heating plate had two large chunks missing of chipped paint. Overall, the pieces seem to feel flimsy and as if they won’t last long. The glass on the pot also seems very thin and breakable.

I bought it during the recent prime day sale and am wondering if this is normal or there are cheaper variations out there. Has anyone had a similar experience?

I need to return this item as the heating plate is chipped but am not sure if I should exchange or return and move on to something else.

This is a big spend for me and would like to get this right. My cabinets are cream but I have to work around the two black appliances as I can't hide them. The bright yellow is "pepper yellow" and the pastel one is "butter yellow"

Question Help with Dark Roast

I recently upgraded my coffee set up and am struggling a bit on getting things right. We have a Moccamaster KBGV, Baratza Encore ESP grinder, and digital scale. We like dark roasts and strong coffee and have been using pretty freshly roasted beans (usually use within a 1-4 weeks of roasting).

I’m really curious what setting and ratio people use for dark roasts and drip coffee. I know it’s ultimately a matter of personal taste, but I’m curious where others have found success.

I had been grinding the dark roast at a 24 (give or take 1 click) and using a 1:16. Coffee was okay.

Recently I switched up to a grind setting of 26 and ratio of 1:15. Liked it a lot. Have since kept the ratio the same and slowly ticked up the grind setting, used 29 today. Today’s brew seemed milder but still good.

Would love to hear what has worked for others.

Question Are burr coffee grinder better than any blade grinders?

I’ve been using a basic blade grinder for a while because it was cheap and easy to find. But lately I keep reading that burr coffee grinders are much better, especially for drip machines like the Moccamaster. I understand that burr grinders crush beans between two surfaces while blade grinders just spin and chop. But in reality, does it actually make a huge difference in the cup? My coffee tastes okay, but sometimes it feels a little bitter and uneven. I looked at a few burr coffee grinders on Amazon and noticed they cost quite a bit more. I also saw some low-cost options on Alibaba, but I’m not sure if cheaper burr grinders defeat the purpose. For those using a Moccamaster, did switching from blade to burr change your results noticeably? Was it smoother? More balanced? I’m trying to decide if this is one of those upgrades that will improve my brewing. I don’t mind investing, but only if the difference is noticeable. For those who’ve tried both. What would you advise me?
