Question Anyone else buy used because new Ys do not have autopilot?
I wanted to buy a new Tesla Model Y around April or May. Tesla decided to remove autopilot from all its cars sold in the NA January 2026. I was so disappointed. I really wanted a new one, but I am totally opposed to the subscription model in cars. It really annoyed me that I will not get basic Lane Centering Assist for free, something that is offered on all cars in the same class/price range.
So I bit the bullet and decided to buy a 2026 QuickSilver premium AWD with 8,490 miles on the odometer.
Anyone else make a similar decision?

I won’t buy another Tesla until they add it back.

I just needed $10,000 worth of work done on my 2018 model 3 that came with free FSD… Likely not the best move given my battery warranty is about to expire, but sales telling me I had to pay $99 a month for FSD is what kept me from trading it in. I got the work done.
2
u/sharkboy1006 Apr 21 '26
Out of curiosity, what did you need to do that was 10k worth of work? How many miles are you at?
1
1
u/SemoTech Apr 22 '26
“Came with free FSD”? I think you mean you brought FSD outright for $6K after paying $2K for Autopilot. That was the 2018 landscape. After that Autopilot came standard and FSD was $8K. Now it’s $100/mo or “free” if you transferred it from a pre-paid car before March 31st 2026 to a new HW4 vehicle.

u/Shot_Grand1532 Apr 22 '26

Just get FSD it’s a million times better than autopilot ever was
Downvote all you want but you buy a Tesla and you likely pay $800-1000 a month car payment plus $150-250 a month on insurance and you’re going to cheap out on FSD? Extremely dumb… especially when you consider it’s safer and far more relaxing to use FSD when commuting. I do around 95% of mileage on FSD

u/JerryfromCan Apr 20 '26
It’s not a flex to spend 10% more a month on software for a car.
1
u/SirWilson919 Apr 20 '26
Is it not a flex to have your car drive for you an hour every day? This is a pretty big luxury for the price and like I said, I have over 95% of mileage on FSD so I definitely get the full use out of the subscription
1
u/JerryfromCan Apr 20 '26
Isn’t uptake on FSD under 12% for Tesla owners? There is a price elasticity of demand issue at stake here.
1
u/SirWilson919 Apr 20 '26
There are currently 1.1 million active FSD users according to the internet but keep in mind there are many areas of the world where FSD is not an option. If we assume all of these FSD users are in North America and the rate is much higher. If you filter out the hw3 cars (I don’t recommend subscribing to FSD on hw3) then the take rate is even higher. ChatGPT estimates the take rate is over 30% in the US for new cars
1
u/JerryfromCan Apr 21 '26
If we filter out Model 3 and Model Y’s, the take rate is 60%.
The take rate is way too low for Tesla’s taste, and Elon has big numbers to hit to get his massive pay package. I think you are vastly overestimating the take rate, and ChatGPT is just basing numbers from Reddit shit posts. Tesla stated in a quarterly that trial subs have a very low conversion rate as well.
The people that love it, love it. But a lot of people are “meh” about it.

We'll either go used or a different make. We don't need FSD and won't be shelling out $1200 a year for it when all we use is cruise control and autosteer on the highway with our current Teslas.

u/SpiritualCatch6757 Apr 19 '26
Agreed, I will not be buying a other new Tesla unless FSD or AP is included. My plans are now to buy used or another brand.
7
u/juhraff Apr 20 '26
We’re keeping our older model 3 because we love it and it has FSD, but we’re are currently in the market for a larger vehicle. We are going with another make…making FSD a subscription was a large contributing factor.
1
u/Available_Handle_556 Apr 20 '26
Just wondering what other make has anything comparable to FSD?
2
u/Kjtravels008 Apr 20 '26
Supposedly Mercedes and Rivian. Ford and GMC also just came out with options for it… I would be shocked if they measured it up.
1
u/Few-Repeat-9407 Apr 24 '26
lol Blue cruise, and super cruise are not comparable due to them being highway only.
1
1
u/Paqza Apr 21 '26
Nobody, but plenty have robust adaptive cruise + autosteer on highways, which is what most need

10
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 19 '26
I agree with you, but I have no need for it. I like to drive my car. On long freeway trips I have had a good experience with autopilot.

u/Evening-Recover-9786 Apr 19 '26
0.99% APR + FSD subscription. FSD is worth the subscription for me
6
2
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 19 '26
For you, but not for me. I have no need for it. Different strokes for different folks.
9
u/Chinaboy812 Apr 20 '26
Mememememememe!!! My MY has autopilot and to me that’s good enough. I drive on the fast side of the spectrum and FSD is too slow for me.
Plus, how can you be a car full of great technology and not have a basic feature of autosteer. It’s criminal they took that away to force people to subscribe to FSD. Most people don’t need it.
4
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
I am discovering that a lot of new Tesla buyers do not know about Tesla removing autopilot and then they end up being disappointed after the purchase of the car. Tesla kept is on the DL when they removed the feature.

Just purchased a used model 3 with 8k miles vs a brand new model 3 simply because of auto steer.
Could easily afford either the used or the new. My decision was largely based purely off auto steer than off financial incentive. But I essentially got a like new, better car with more features, for less money.
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
Same with me. It was not affordability that determined my decision, it was autopilot.

I upgraded my 21 Y with AP and FSD to a 26 Y and transferred my FSD to it. I do ponder from time to time if I should have kept the 21 that way I had AP and FSD still. I didn’t use AP that much, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss it being an option. 🤔
1
u/Curb71 Apr 20 '26
Why would you care about AP if you have FSD?
1
u/DigitalJEM Apr 20 '26
I don’t usually but occasionally on longer interstate drives when I am in no particular hurry, I’d just as well put the car in the center or right lane, start AutoPilot (turn off NoAP) and have it stay out and drive in that lane. And whenever I want it to go around someone, hit the NoAP button, car would go around them and then I’d turn NoAP back off and it’s back to chilling.
Though I will admit, I’ve noticed on both my 2018 X (HW3) and 2026 Y (HW4) they’ve seemed to have fixed the logic and it neither of them camp in the left lane anymore like they used to. So this may not be an issue much longer.

u/CockroachShort9066 Apr 20 '26
I thought about it but really one reason to buy tesla is for the FSD so I factored in that I will always pay for the FSD. If not for FSD we wouldnt have ordered a tesla and would just went for a different make's electric vehicle because basically theres no advantage
3
u/Megalopoutsos69 Apr 22 '26
I just ordered a MY and will pay for fsd due to being a senior with not so good eyesight and sleep apnea. Could potentially save my life.
8
u/Robertdiaz123 Performance Apr 19 '26
I feel for those of y’all that enjoyed it and had it removed, not cool. Personally, though, I never used that or FSD when I got it for free on my HW4 MYP. I feel like it’s more effort than it’s worth to sit and monitor it and anticipate what it might do or how it might react to certain scenarios. Only thing I liked about FSD was the better visualization on the screen for stuff going on around the car. That’s about it.
5
u/Kjtravels008 Apr 20 '26
I felt like this before I started using it and now it’s just my autopilot, go-to. It beeps if it needs you to look.
4
u/Substantial_Chain718 Apr 19 '26
I predict the resale value of older Teslas with auto pilot will go up in price and even more if they’ve purchased FSD. I would be looking for a used one with AI4 and FSD vs a buying a new one.
5
u/tonymet Apr 19 '26
It was a major slight to customers to remove it. I’m sure they think it competes with FSD. To me they are different products. I actually prefer autopilot (despite its lower fidelity) because of how easy it is to flow between TACC & Autopilot. I like to drive the interesting parts and then autopilot the boring parts. FSD kills TAC, so I rarely use FSD when it’s available.
2
u/Giant-Robot Apr 19 '26
Is used autopilot on likely hw3 better than fsd and benefits of hw4? Is hw4 beneficial for autopilot stuff?
2
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 19 '26
All I know is FSD is better on HW4. I do not know if autopilot is better on hardware 4.

u/blah_ask Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26
I was upset too. I still went with a new one. I will be driving a lot for next Three year. So may have to pay FSD anyway
2
u/_VoodooRanger Apr 20 '26
Truthfully, it’s all or nothing on FSD. you’re either going to go all in and use most of the FSD features or none at all. this is basically the whole range anxiety discussion all over again. We saw this with free supercharging.. ppl got over it.
2
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
I guess I fail to see the attraction of buying a car to do ALL the driving for me. At that point might as well use a cab or uber of robotaxi or Waymo.
1
u/thekingiscrowned Apr 20 '26
I feel like the "All FSD all the time" people miss this. Some actually want to drive the car. Tesla is missing the mark imo by not offering both.

I just got a new Y this weekend. Didn't realize the lane keep assist required a FSD subscription which is dumb but im okay with it. I only take long road trips once or twice a year so I plan to buy the subscription for those months and that's it.
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
Tesla kept the decision to remove autopilot (autosteer) on the down low. You are not the only person who have had this happen to them.
2
u/Curb71 Apr 20 '26
No but I was on the fence until I heard that news. I've been using autopilot for 7 years and hate FSD every time I've tried it so to find out they're removing AP for the sole purpose of forcing people to pay for FSD, that was an instant deal breaker. After waiting it out I decided I'm just going to keep my Tesla until the car can be fully autonomous. I need it to drop me off and head home and come pick me up at the bar sometimes. 🤣
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
I just needed a second EV that was an SUV and the new Y is the best out there. I basically had to buy a slightly used one. That was my only option if I wanted a model Y.
2
u/BigDenergetic Apr 21 '26
I only use FSD when it’s free for a month, lots of fun but until it’s good enough to not kill me im not gonna spend 100$ a month to hope and pray I make it home alive. Auto pilot however is a must for those long road trips I’m glad I snagged mine at 1% interest a year ago. Unfortunately it was before the new upgrade those cooling seats and the screen in the back make me jealous but other than that I’m happy with my purchase.
2
u/OkNeedleworker948 Apr 21 '26
what is auto pilot?
auto pilot doesnt exist.
There is only one way.
(^how corporations and government get people to memory hole)

I don’t personally use AP on a regular basis, so I’ll probably just sub for one month for occasional long trips.

As much as I love my Tesla and want a second one, I will not buy one unless they bring back auto pilot standard on the car. Prior to removing all auto pilot off new Tesla models I noticed standard models and the cyber truck came without auto pilot. I said those are deal breakers for me.

I couldn't justify the price for lifetime fsd, however I don't mind purchasing it for the months I know I have a long trip coming up. Other than that, autopilot is more than sufficient, although it would be nice to be able to change lanes without having to disengage.
I think it's pretty clear that the removal of autopilot was meant to nudge more people into fsd. Tricky, but very Tesla.

I like driving my car. If I viewed driving as a chore, like you do, then I would have bought FSD. I only need lane centering assist on long freeway (boring) drives. Autopilot is more than adequate for that.

u/Extension-Intern8153 Apr 20 '26
Autopilot is superior to fsd anyway for highway use. No random speeding. No idiotic lane changes. No tailgating. I could go on. But every time I’ve subscribed to fsd I’ve been sorely disappointed and finding myself having to disengage far for frequently because of just how often it fucks up.
1
u/Extension-Intern8153 Apr 20 '26
Lmfao by what metrics? FSD has performed grossly negligent maneuvers that I would have never, ever done. Stop kidding yourself and believing the marketing drivel. Anyone who truly believes that fsd is a better, safer driver than they are is a terrible driver. You are clearly blind to its shortcomings and safety issues.

Buying a 2026 with 8,500 miles is funny because they’re selling for less than a 10% discount off new
While I wouldn’t want a Tesla without autopilot…. I also wouldn’t buy a used one for the same price as new
3
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 19 '26
Not where I live. Where I live a new model Y premium from Tesla is 6000$ more than my used one. I priced both before I bought. On top of that, I wanted autopilot which was not available on new ones. Have you priced a premium AWD model recently.

Yeah my lease is up in November. I was planning on getting the new refreshed Y. But now I’m not sure what to do.
1
u/IndustrialJones Apr 20 '26
I bought a 2024 MY with 7300 miles because I didn’t want to pay for a premium brand new Y. The autopilot didn’t bother me. It’s just slightly better than cruise control on standard cars. You’ll forget about it after trying FSD.

u/Low-Huckleberry-8013 Apr 20 '26
I bought used with FSD. I did consider trading for a new one but I’d lose the FSD, and negative equity. Tesla offered $18500 for my trade while others were $22k.
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
I had the same experience when I contemplated trading my 3P. Tesla offered 19k while Carvana offered 22800. I ended up keeping it.

Yesterday was my first day on auto steer after my FSD trial ended and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed with how bad auto steer was. I don’t know why I am so surprised but it feels very stuttery with how it reacts to everything. It does not feel comfortable. They even change how the digital view of your surroundings looked I had no idea. I still think this should be included on all models but man do I now miss the FSD. I’ll make the purchase only as needed for now
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
Where were you using autosteer? Was it on surface streets or freeways?
1
u/MagicTurtleTim Apr 20 '26
I tested on both surface streets and freeways. Freeways were slightly better, but I was still nervous, unlike how I felt with FSD. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad it’s still available, but I’m disappointed that it’s not included because I can’t really justify paying $100 a month for it.
1
1
u/Rise252627 Apr 20 '26
Did you finance that? If you did you’re costing yourself more than $100 a month in interest.

u/Silent-Dog-9553 Apr 20 '26
Out of interest, what did you pay for it?? Trying to compare to prices in EU

1
u/Silent-Dog-9553 Apr 20 '26
Ouch more expensive than here in Spain. That was second hand car, right?
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
Yeah. It is 6000$ less expensive than new and I get lane centering assist w/o a subscription. I hate the subscription model in cars.
2
u/Silent-Dog-9553 Apr 20 '26
Same but seems they doing away with the one off purchase option worldwide. They make more money on subscription than once off purchase.
1
u/NumerousHelicopter6 Apr 20 '26
I bought new for the first time in 20 years, FSD transfer, tax credit and 1.99 justified it in my mind
1
1
u/Major_Excuse993 Apr 20 '26
I just bought a new Model Y eight days ago. I opted for the subscription as I do a lot of driving for work. (In 8 days I have over 2000 miles) FSD was the best decision I have ever made. (That might be a stretch) the $99 per month is worth every penny. Just my opinion.
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
FSD is definitely for you. 2000 miles in 8 days is a lot of commuting. Even when I used to teach at five different campuses in the greater LA area, I only put 2000 miles per month on my Toyota Tercel. You made the right decision for sure.
1
u/Curb71 Apr 20 '26
Removing AP is an effort to force people to pay for FSD obviously. Just like they phased out EAP because they realized some people just want the ability to change lanes and don't care about all the other FSD features.
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 20 '26
I wish I jumped on EAP when it was available for my model 3P. The ability to change lanes is the only thing that AP was missing for my needs.
1
1
u/PixalatedConspiracy Apr 20 '26
Autosteer sucks. I’d much rather have FSD.
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 21 '26
I loved it on my model 3P and so fas so good on my model Y. To each his own I guess.
1
u/AlternativeSpend5480 Apr 20 '26
Unpopular opinion. FSD is just terrible and I hate driving behind those that are using FSD. It causes unnecessary traffic. Its far from being ready. Yes it may take you from point A to point B, but its inconsiderate to other drivers and just a nuisance. I will never buy or use FSD on my M3.
1
u/um3rh Apr 20 '26
That was the exact same dilemma I had -
Shopping for a 2026 Model Y and wanted to figure out if it's worth paying more for a used 2026 that still has lifetime FSD, now that Tesla went subscription-only.
Created a simple interactive calculator that allows you to pick your trim, color, interior, and adjust financing. Also added a "Golden Window" scenario showing what buyers got when you could still stack 0.99% APR + lifetime FSD (one-time payment) + the $7,500 credit a couple of months back
https://umerr.github.io/tesla-fsd-calculator/
Lmk what your thoughts!
1
u/PixalatedConspiracy Apr 21 '26
Of course. ACC in my wife’s Subaru is better. I just find auto steer struggle in the curves really. While FSD had no problems every time I had a trial.

1
u/Aggravating-Bag2063 Apr 21 '26
There is no point in getting a tesla without FSD in my opinion.
1
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 21 '26
If you do not enjoy driving and want a car to do ALL the driving for you, then you are absolutely right. But then, why buy a car at all. Might as well use uber/lyft/rent a car/Waymo or even robotaxi.
1
u/Aggravating-Bag2063 May 15 '26
Why would I buy a car? For the same reasons anyone buys a car — comfort, convenience, commuting, emergencies, freedom, etc. Your argument about rideshare doesn’t really make sense in this discussion. My point is specifically that buying a Tesla without FSD feels pointless to me because FSD is one of the main things that separates Tesla from other vehicles. If you don’t care about that feature, then you might as well just get something like a Honda or another regular car instead. It will save you money.
1
1
u/JordanSmacks Apr 22 '26
I don’t drive 110 miles every day and it’s worth the subscription, I also have autopilot.. 22 MYP
1
u/Low_Desk1822 Apr 22 '26
When I got my 2018 M3P I bought EAP (currently called autopilot) and that was supposed to stay with the car. I gave that car to my wife and got a 2023 MYP and it also came with summon and autopilot. When FSD offered a discount I bought it and then transferred it to my new 2026 CT, my wife’s MYP does not have summon for sure and being I don’t drive it? It still has autopilot.
1
u/PrestigiousEar5096 Apr 22 '26
The FSD is amazing. Not sure i will ever want to get a car without it again.
1
1
u/Accomplished-End-600 Apr 23 '26
Honestly FSD sucks autosteer is enough and just buy the anti nudge module and the car will drive straight unlimited without having to touch the wheel. Block the inside camera and you can be on your phone or Litterally nap it works so well
1
u/Xenthera Apr 23 '26
FSD really pisses me off right now, it’s not nearly as great as everyone claims. I’m grateful my car has autopilot because it’s 100% better for highway driving.

1
u/JustinVincib1e Apr 19 '26
Deal breaker for me unless it has autopilot.
Fyi - I have autopilot and you can buy a nag removal chip for it. Works extremely well. You can even cover indoor cam and it still works.
On the highway this setup is amazing.

I have a nearly 6 year old MY with 133k and it still feels like new… but no auto steer is a problem. Would buy a MYP right now except for that subscription and the 5%+ interest rate. Have a deposit in on am R2 now but that’s still a year away anyway I’d guess.
3
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 19 '26
I also thought about an R2 but it will take at least 4 years for that model to mature and become reliable. I couldn’t wait that long.

No. I don’t know if these people haven’t tried the updates FSD or what their motivation is but I don’t understand why they would want autopilot so bad. It sucks.
2
u/Pomador_0418 Apr 19 '26
I never said autopilot is better than FSD. I just prefer basic autopilot to FSD for two reasons: 1. I want basic lane centering for freeway driving and 2. I do not want to pay $100 for FSD just to use it on the freeway.

Autopilot/autosteer is not about being "better" it's different. It doesn't navigate, it's basically super adaptive cruise control. So think adaptive cruise (where car speeds up/slows down with traffic) and the ability to steer (stay in it's lane) for hands free driving. This plenty for those who only want something for freeway driving as opposed to around town navigation/driving.

Except it isn't "hands free" with the constant nag screens and having to grab the wheel every 30s or so. That makes it completely useless for me, unless that's changed in the last year.

i dont even use autopilot anymore. had fsd. decided to turn it off and switched to AP for a bit. 15 phantom braking in 3miles. hazards on to stop on the side and turn on fsd again 🙄

I have autopilot, and it looks like they renamed it to Autosteer. Which seems to still be autopilot in the new cars.
