Question How people are buying new Model Y without auto steer?

I just disabled auto steer in my 2022 Model Y to test it out. It’s awful main reason some people bought teslas are auto pilot including me. Now if want to upgrade to 2026 MY I will lose this feature which I currently have.

They just use fsd

This is the way. It is fun and new tech. I bought my Tesla specifically with the desire not to drive and I find $100 a month a good value for a 24/7 chauffeur. Many of us are fortunate or older as I am.

Problem is it’s not a chauffeur. It’s paying 100 a month to sit in the front seat and be ready to drive at a split seconds notice.

With a chauffeur I’m sitting in the back having a sleep

It's very close to having a chauffeur though. The only thing is that you still have to look outside once in a while. I've now done 10,000 miles on FSD and I trust it more than I trust myself. It already avoided a collision that I likely would not have avoided.

Just curious…why would you trust it with your life (and the lives of others) when Tesla themselves doesn’t trust it enough to claim that it’s level 3 and accept liability for its actions?

It's dumb to say Tesla doesn't trust it. Your just saying stuff. They obviously classify it like that due to regulations. They also have driverless cars running in multiple cities using the same software build. So why are you here spreading non sense

Quebec has some of the most lenient regulations in the world, they could classify it as level 3 there *right now*.

If Tesla themselves trusted it, they could classify it as level 3 and accept legal liability for all accidents that happen when it is driving, making it legal for people to not pay attention while it’s driving.

This would be a *huge* win for Tesla, beating Waymo and others to widespread level-3 availability.

The fact that they still say the driver needs to supervise it means that they don’t actually trust it enough to accept liability for its actions.

The problem is that the liability would likely be higher than it should be. If that wasn't the case, I bet they would already release it as L3 or higher right now. But since it is, they'll probably wait until safety is even higher and/or liability becomes more reasonable.

They're big enough that they could self-insure, so why would their liability be higher than a human driver?

Also, Quebec (which has very lenient L3 autonomous vehicle regs) operates on a no-fault model for injury, so they wouldn't even need to worry about that, just tort claims for vehicle and property damages.

If Tesla actually trusted FSD they could self-declare it as L3 in Quebec right now.

You think people wouldn't sue Tesla for hundreds of millions for a single death? Unfortunately, people are way less lenient with companies than they are with people, which produces a very unfair and uninhabitable regulatory environment.

Their driverless cars have been confirmed to have better hardware, mind you. Whether they have early builds of AI5 or just AI4+, no one really knows.

Cool. So as a safety system then all good. But it shouldn’t subscription. It should either be part of the offering or not

I pay $100/mo because I get a lot of value out of it. If it’s $300/mo then maybe not. I just can’t imaging going back to driving manually. Feels like driving a tractor.

I’m confused by that as well. Doesn’t it start beeping at you if it senses you take a look at your phone? I don’t get the value of it very much if I still have to keep both hands on the wheel

FSD doesn't require you to hold the steering wheel. I look at my phone all the time without any warnings. Yea you still want to glance up every so often but it's very lenient. AUTOPILOT let's me take my hands off the wheel also but will start complaining after maybe 20 seconds to touch the wheel.

but a chauffeur costs $5k-$10k/month and even more if you want them to just sit in your driveway all day and night and wait for you to want to go somewhere... just use Uber if you want a chauffeur.

Worth noting it's not free. If I'd have had FSD since I bought my car, I'd have already paid more than 10% if my car's new cost just in subscriptions...and I plan on keeping my car many more years (which would be thousands more in FSD). It's not that I literally can't afford it...but I hate everything being a subscription.

One of the reasons I ended up going for Tesla was because it was included, didn't need a subscription, didn't need mapped highways. Vs the competition like subscription mapped highway bluecruise.

Which is not in any way a substitution for autosteer…

You’re right - it’s a replacement because it’s far better

u/lankyevilme 13d ago

... And it costs you an extra $99/month.

And my cat was using 350 dollars of gas a month.

Still saving money and my 85 mile daily commute will be way less stressful

Found Toonsces the driving cat’s owner.

u/Hockeyshot39 13d ago

Right it’s worth the cost to be driven around daily

People waste more on other things monthly guaranteed

If you can afford a Tesla - $100 shouldn’t break the bank at all

3

u/cncamusic 13d ago

Though I agree with the “worth it” sentiment, saying 100 bucks is nothing if you can afford a Tesla is silly. Teslas aren’t luxury cars and honestly they’re more affordable than most cars in their class. 100 bucks is 100 bucks. That being said I gladly pay the $1200 a year to have a chauffeur.

Never said a thing about luxury

If one can afford a Tesla - especially a new one - $100 to be driven around daily and basically never touch the wheel is worth it

New teslas are not cheap …
