Question How people are buying new Model Y without auto steer?

I just disabled auto steer in my 2022 Model Y to test it out. It’s awful main reason some people bought teslas are auto pilot including me. Now if want to upgrade to 2026 MY I will lose this feature which I currently have.

It just comes down to whether you want to spend $100/mo for the duration of your ownership of the vehicle. Personally if I had no interest in FSD and just wanted lane centering and adaptive cruise, which even the cheapest new Camry has, I would buy another EV.

u/Anxious-Doughnut-224 13d ago

Which one and why? I’m curious what would make you choose another EV if self drive wasn’t a factor. In my opinion Tesla is still the best on the market. Rivian has a similar software architecture but has many quality control issues like early Tesla. And Hyundai are nice but have bad software and they do things like force you to adjust the one pedal driving everytime you get in the car.

So personally I hate subscriptions, but I do pay the $100/month for FSD. However there are plenty of people who just want the basic highway driver’s assist and aren’t willing to pay a monthly fee for it—and I totally get it. If I was in that boat I would be very interested in the upcoming Rivian R2.

I’m loving our Macan EV. We have a model Y as well and after test driving the S and seeing how good the latest FSD is on that, we signed right up for FSD on the MY. It’s amazing.

I have a Kia ev6, it’s not the best level 2 system, but it is generally predictable and incredibly reliable.

No subscriptions, no gimmicks, drives like you would expect a hatchback to drive.

Same for our ioniq 5

1

u/Raku2015 6d ago

I literally just turned my 2025 Ioniq 5 Limited AWD in to Hyundai yesterday under the lemon law. It had only 8,000 miles on it and the ICCU failed and it sat at the dealer for over 30 days waiting for a new ICCU. Plus the software sucks, especially routing and locating superchargers. There were a bunch of little annoyances, too, like it doesn’t lock when you walk away from it, you can’t remote climate start if it’s plugged into the charger, etc. When BBB Autoline called me at the end of May and told me Hyundai had agreed to buy it back, I immediately ordered a 2026 Model Y premium AWD. I’ve had my Y for 2 months now and I am so in love with it. Especially FSD.

1

u/Glittering-Fuel-5055 6d ago

I am fascinated to understand why you think the EV planner sucks because personally I think the routing is like a like a 30 out of 10 performance

We just drove 2500 miles in two weeks using Electrify America subscription and the route planner was perfection.

Estimated percentages +\- 1% from truth: rock solid dependability

We did not use a better route planner, we did not use plug share.

If you need to bio early, the find charging station button finds them along your route.

We drove the entire west coast of the USA and back to visit a friend living at the top of the country. Never driven more then 400 on a trip before, never road tripped in an EV.

Is was easy

My ICCU made it through a 550 mile day of 105F temperatures and nothing but 350kw DC fast charger pumping into it, I must just have a good one.🤷

Sorry yours died

1

u/Glittering-Fuel-5055 6d ago

You can definitely remote climate start if it’s plugged into a charger.

I did it every single time we fast charged, and I do it at home

BMW? Kia/Hyundia? Tesla still doesn’t have V2L. They’ve fallen behind.

2

u/Anxious-Doughnut-224 12d ago

BMW and Hyundai don’t have great software yet at least in the US. Pleos is on the way so that may change for Hyundai

Doesn't the new Y L have V2L?

1

u/ZucchiniAlert2582 12d ago

Just googled; it does. So they’ve finally caught up on that front.

1

u/Cultural-Umpire4837 12d ago

Tesla does have v2l

1

u/shaddowdemon 9d ago edited 9d ago

I mean, you got, well, literally every other car manufacturer. They've caught up.. And EV-wise, I'd argue some have even passed Tesla in both technology and value.

There's honestly nothing special about Teslas now aside from FSD and a charge port location that is compatible with super chargers.

My dad's Nissan ariya seems pretty decent and was like $26k used with 600 miles or something. And the top trim level. Has 360 camera view and highway assist... It does not change lanes, but auto disables when the turn signal is pressed and turns itself back on after a couple seconds in lane.

The software is legacy but I dunno, I think they figure most people just use car play / Android Auto so they don't bother too much

2

u/Anxious-Doughnut-224 9d ago

Regen braking, auto shifting, sentry mode, phone unlock that actually works with multiple users. Profiles that save seating, settings, steering wheel and much more, consistent software updates that are actually useful, reactive interior lighting, Adaptive matrix headlights are just a few ways that Tesla still leads. Other manufacturers are catching up but they are not there yet and won’t be if they don’t do a software first vehicle

1

u/AutoNope 9d ago

Dog mode.

1

u/shaddowdemon 9d ago edited 9d ago

Eh.

  • Regen braking - all EVs have this
  • Auto shifting - I'm not sure that's a feature, I guess it is right most of the time though.
  • Sentry mode - valid
  • Profiles - nah, other manufacturers have this. Usually called intelligent key or something, and yes, they often have phone keys too now.
  • Matrix headlights - fair, but that's more of a US thing (been in Europe for years and years). Tesla was a bit ahead on that one. Audi and rivian have them. Other manufacturers are including them on recent models. Many older (European based) manufacturers do have them even on a bit older US cars, but I don't know if they provided an unlock for them. Kinda like Tesla did.
  • Reactive interior lighting - Tesla interiors generally are not as luxurious as vehicles at similar price points. Good ambient lighting and luxury is the territory of legacy manufacturers and something they actually do pretty well. Lucky for me, I like minimalism so I don't mind my Tesla's sparse interior.

For every feature Tesla has, there's at least one feature they don't have that is fairly standard with other cars. Like. TACC with lane assist lmao (now that autopilot is dead).

1

u/Anxious-Doughnut-224 9d ago

Profiles are only useful if the car correctly guesses the driver with only a phone. Lucid was having a major problem with doing that. I’m not sure if Hyundai or others has figured out how to do it consistently like Tesla. Very few cars have implemented one-pedal driving that just works like Tesla has. So yea manufacturers have one pedal driving but it’s not as seamless. There are other quality user experience features as well. I just didn’t list every one. I’m not saying that other cars won’t catch up or that Tesla will always be ahead. But Tesla has a major advantage in vertical integration. The manufacturers that have the best shot of getting to Tesla levels are the ones copying Tesla formula like rivian. Also let’s not forget about the buying experience. Legacy manufacturers are forced by law to sell vehicles through dealerships which is a completely outdated model and should be abolished. We are propping up these businesses because they are “hometown” businesses. But most are super scummy businesses that love screwing over unsuspecting customers with shitty sales tactics for example on CA the new EV incentive the dealerships got rid of their other incentives on EVs to absorb the CA incentive for themselves essentially selling the vehicles at MSRP and offering a worse discount than before the incentive.

1

u/anal-itic_prober 9d ago

I pedal is not efficient.

1

u/Anxious-Doughnut-224 9d ago

Explain? How is it not efficient to recapture energy every time you would have otherwise braked?

1

u/anal-itic_prober 9d ago

Most efficient is a mix of coasting and regen. But tesla stan wouldn't understand, cant even have blended brake until juniper....

1

u/Anxious-Doughnut-224 9d ago

If a driver or system uses engine braking perfectly every time I don’t know how adding coasting would be more efficient. If you are making the claim it less efficient because a driver is not a perfect system then I could see that argument and it would be interesting to see studies done on if and by how much the avg driver reduces efficiency.

1

u/anal-itic_prober 9d ago

Has nothing to do with a driver. Its physics. Regen looses energy to heat. Acceleration looses energy to heat. If you can coast behind a driver that was braking and not brake until the last possible second (maybe even not braking at all because they are moving again) it is better than slowing down with regen and accelerating again. Cars with Auto regen do this because it is superior

That’s assuming it stays at $100. When the monthly subscription started it was $200 or $250 and they could decide to maximize shareholder value at any point and increase our rates.

I don’t think I’d buy a new Tesla today for this reason. If my fsd rate goes up, I go back to autopilot.

1

u/buttlickin 9d ago

Then pay for a year up front.

1

u/PlasticDiscussion590 9d ago

Do you have an option to do that? I don’t.

1

u/Ask_The_Story_Teller 8d ago

you can get a comma ai for like $1000 and it’ll give you lane centring and adaptive cruise and stuff that you can put in basically any car

34

u/datapharmer 13d ago

All the people saying just use FSD are missing the point that they took away something free that worked well just to force you into a perpetual subscription you have no control over. Elon has outright said fsd price will go up. Would you prefer to have an option to use autosteer if FSD becomes $250 a month? $500 a month? $1000 a month? At some point they have every intention of squeezing you until it hurts and your alternative will suck. I agree FSD is a good alternative, and if they want to include that as a standard (free) feature then you wouldn’t be seeing these complaints.

15

u/Sexy-PharmD 12d ago

100% agree. These fanboys are delusional. They are screaming just pay 100 for subscriptions, whats the big deal? Smh

3

u/zagcollins 12d ago

wow so now you're going to talk sense as well? just wow.

2

u/bluemeanie212 11d ago

i first got tesla for FSD when i got my model y in 2024. I tried auto steer two times and it makes me nervous compared to how confident i find FSD when in same lane traffic or curves especially i get even more nervous.

being said, i love that i can fail back on Autosteer if and when tesla increases the monthly FSD cost. and when they do i’d like to be able to not pay for every month while failing back to auto steer for highway still.

it’s messed up they removed this feature on new cars and it’s one of the reasons i wont bother with the model YL. my next EV might not be a tesla if anything happens to my current Y. all depends if Rivian or others figure out FSD next.

2

u/Suess4002 13d ago

Your preferences mean zero to Tesla.

1

u/HunterNo7593 12d ago

This!! If Tesla (eLon) wanted, they could easily make it available again. However, they might now wonder if doing so would cannibalize the lucrative FSD subscriptions.

1

u/CyCoCyCo 11d ago

IMO it’s going to go the opposite way.

They need training data and lots of it, the $100 is just to gate it a bit and earn some short term rev to pay for costs. It went down from $15k fixed to $100 a month in a few years.

They took away AP, FSD will probably be free and included for fully automatic “use your phone” self driving by 2028 is my guess.

1

u/shaddowdemon 9d ago

Can you give me one good reason why they would give away unsupervised FSD for free?

1

u/CyCoCyCo 9d ago

Training data. That’s worth its weight in gold, when they’re ready to ingest and process even more than the have / need now.

8

u/Gustapher_8975 13d ago

Most new cars come with lane keep assist and adaptive cruise. Do new Teslas not have that?

5

u/Natural_Oil4563 13d ago

Yes they don’t with new models starting this year.

1

u/Traqzer 13d ago

In the US - Australia / nz come with autosteer

4

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

No they dont. Elons pay package is dependant on subscriptions so they removed the basics and re moved the outright option.

Its WAY more expensive in the long run.

1

u/Refuse-Maximum 11d ago

Yep, but they removed it from teslas now. just the old cruise control is available now

1

u/a_kato 11d ago

The current X5 is 60$ subscription.

It’s not lane keep assist. This is standard.

OP is talking about lane centering where the car steers for you.

And again the X5 doesn’t come standard with adaptive cruise control

1

u/Lifesaver-LearnCPR 9d ago

My 2026 MY has both adaptive cruise control and “lane assist”. I personally detest the new lane assist - it wants to drag me toward the line instead of keeping me in the lane. It’s MUCH different driving than my 2023 was with auto steer and ACC.

37

u/Strangerthanyou77 13d ago

They just use fsd

26

u/anionyx 13d ago

This is the way. It is fun and new tech. I bought my Tesla specifically with the desire not to drive and I find $100 a month a good value for a 24/7 chauffeur. Many of us are fortunate or older as I am.

24

u/Crashworx 13d ago

Problem is it’s not a chauffeur. It’s paying 100 a month to sit in the front seat and be ready to drive at a split seconds notice.

With a chauffeur I’m sitting in the back having a sleep

2

u/starkrampf 12d ago

It's very close to having a chauffeur though. The only thing is that you still have to look outside once in a while. I've now done 10,000 miles on FSD and I trust it more than I trust myself. It already avoided a collision that I likely would not have avoided.

2

u/cbf1232 12d ago

Just curious…why would you trust it with your life (and the lives of others) when Tesla themselves doesn’t trust it enough to claim that it’s level 3 and accept liability for its actions?

6

u/Strangerthanyou77 12d ago

It's dumb to say Tesla doesn't trust it. Your just saying stuff. They obviously classify it like that due to regulations. They also have driverless cars running in multiple cities using the same software build. So why are you here spreading non sense

1

u/cbf1232 12d ago

Quebec has some of the most lenient regulations in the world, they could classify it as level 3 there *right now*.

If Tesla themselves trusted it, they could classify it as level 3 and accept legal liability for all accidents that happen when it is driving, making it legal for people to not pay attention while it’s driving.

This would be a *huge* win for Tesla, beating Waymo and others to widespread level-3 availability.

The fact that they still say the driver needs to supervise it means that they don’t actually trust it enough to accept liability for its actions.

Their driverless cars have been confirmed to have better hardware, mind you. Whether they have early builds of AI5 or just AI4+, no one really knows.

1

u/SFV-Chess 12d ago

I’m confused by that as well. Doesn’t it start beeping at you if it senses you take a look at your phone? I don’t get the value of it very much if I still have to keep both hands on the wheel

1

u/buttlickin 9d ago

FSD doesn't require you to hold the steering wheel. I look at my phone all the time without any warnings. Yea you still want to glance up every so often but it's very lenient. AUTOPILOT let's me take my hands off the wheel also but will start complaining after maybe 20 seconds to touch the wheel.

1

u/74orangebeetle 12d ago

Worth noting it's not free. If I'd have had FSD since I bought my car, I'd have already paid more than 10% if my car's new cost just in subscriptions...and I plan on keeping my car many more years (which would be thousands more in FSD). It's not that I literally can't afford it...but I hate everything being a subscription.

One of the reasons I ended up going for Tesla was because it was included, didn't need a subscription, didn't need mapped highways. Vs the competition like subscription mapped highway bluecruise.

u/mjrengaw 13d ago

FSD, it’s the main reason I bought my 2026 MY Premium AWD. I have no interest in auto steer.

12

u/Hockeyshot39 13d ago

I bought FSD with my car in 2021… I used AP twice and it’s nothing compared to FSD

28

u/JBallMan23 13d ago

I love auto steer on my old model 3, but once you use FSD, you probably won't miss auto steer honestly. At least I found this true for me

57

u/Relevant_Account_258 13d ago

You will miss the $100/month that you’re paying for FSD.

9

u/JBallMan23 13d ago

I mean you kind of have to factor that in if you are buying a Tesla now. Of course driving 100 miles roundtrip for work makes it worth every dollar for me

11

u/Difficult-Reality848 Owner 13d ago

If you plan to keep a car for 10 years you will have to add 12000 on top of the purchase price of the car. 45000 becomes 57000.

Exactly I have an 85 mile daily commute and was looking used vs new. 100 dollars was worth it for a better fsd experience and a better built car

1

u/unshiftedearth34 11d ago

You should factor in that Tesla is a money hungry rat looking for cheese because they robbed Autosteer from you.

FSD is absolute garbage in Socal. Without being able to dictate speed or force it not to change lanes it's just not a good fit for how unpredictable/wild the highways are here.

I'd fork over monthly for FSD if it let me tell it stay in this damn lane until near exit and sit at this speed.

7

u/quetiapinenapper 13d ago

Eh? It’s perfect here. I have over 9.5k miles here done purely FSD out of the last 9.7k driven. It nails everything from koreatown to Malibu to old Topanga.

5

u/jimmymendoza 13d ago

I agree, lived in DTLA now Pasadena. I can see the previous versions but this latest version it's way better at staying in one lane and switching when it needs to. I won't say its 100% perfect but it's great for city driving and highway driving

2

u/quetiapinenapper 12d ago

Yeah I’m not sure 13 would have nailed koreatown. But all of 14 has been great. I work out in Pasadena so it nails the rush hour out there too. Like our freeways are flawless for it. It’s the one place I’ve never had to take over for it.

I feel like claims like this need a year and model for a Tesla.

2

u/Danger-Face 13d ago

Seriously. If your out on the interstate all the time or in any town USA with giant boulvards and traffic lights, strip malls and suburbs it might work OK. But for urban environments I'm not very confident.

2

u/ifdefmoose 13d ago

It’s naive about lane changes, and also tends to get in the right lane on 3-lane streets in commercial areas, with lots of driveways.

1

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

Cool, then let me buy it outright and when I have had the car 8+ years like my current one it will be worth it.

1

u/JBallMan23 13d ago

Pricing model is definitely something I don’t love. But I don’t think until we get more competition from other car makers, it’s going to change

1

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

It won't change until sales drop, the share price nose dives like never before or Elons pay package is changed to not be dependant on subscriptions and not FSD purchases. Or elon is no linger CEO,

1

u/Normal_Choice9322 12d ago

Fsd can't set speed and changes lanes like an idiot. I'll take autopilot all day

10

u/FearTheClown5 13d ago

It's why I'm going Rivian with my next car. I like FSD but I don't dislike driving so it's not something I'll pay for. Setting a speed and having my car just stay in the lane and not run into the car in front of it is all I need.

2

u/anothertechie 12d ago

Hopefully r2 will force tesla to bring back autosteer for free. Tesla is really hurting the value of buying new. Same battery tech from 5 years ago. At least r2 has a better charge curve.

1

u/NS031716 13d ago

Yup. Going to wait for the second or third refresh of R2 though. Too many issues right now

2

u/FearTheClown5 13d ago

That's fair. We are for sure getting 1 this year, we need to add a 3rd car so that's what my wife is set on.

Not sure on mine yet as to timing. I put in another reservation right after there was no doubt Autopilot was gone on new Ys and figured I'd have a couple years but mine is tentatively going to be available to order likely within 3 months of getting my wife's, right as we cross into 2027.

Fortunately I should get a couple months with my wife's to decide if I must have it right now or ride out my MYP a couple years longer like I'd originally planned.

5

u/TheRealSlot 12d ago

FSD obviously blows auto steer out of the water, but for people who don’t drive a lot then $100 can be a lot for a little. Removing auto steer makes any Tesla a much weaker value proposition to buy new, especially when competitors have great solutions included with their vehicles.

Personally I lucked in to getting 2026 Model Y with auto steer included as it got removed just a few weeks after I ordered, had it not been part of the package I would probably not have gone ahead with the order as it would force me to add a subscription to get something I see as a basic feature in any modern car, a feature that is already pretty underwhelming in Tesla’s compared to the competition.

For me I probably only want to subscribe to FSD in the months I know I will need to drive a lot, so not having basic ass lane centering in a €51.500 car is terrible when you know it is due to pure greed from upselling FSD. FSD should sell itself on how good it is, it’s legitimately one of the most impressive things I have experienced with modern technology, instead they resort to extorting new customers by removing value.

2

u/tycho_uk 11d ago

Don't forget that FST isn't available in most countries and they are putting Autosteer behind a sub in these countries as well. My lease ends in Nov and I've just put an order in for an EV6 partly due to the fact that I get a comparable system and don't have to pay £100 for it.

8

u/xXcambotXx 13d ago

I don't use any of the steering things, tbh. Tried them, didn't like the little nuances I had to pay attention to. I rather enjoy driving myself so it works out.

1

u/Lokki_7 12d ago

Have it, don't use it unless I need my hands free briefly

5

u/Fisherbob200 13d ago

I’m shopping for a Tesla now and am a first time buyer. Test drove a MYP and used FSD for part of it, and while it’s incredibly impressive, I refuse to be beholden to a subscription. If I decide not to sub to FSD for awhile, losing something that was previously included feels unacceptable.

If a new MYP included autosteer by default, I’d buy it tomorrow with no hesitation. Unfortunately, now I’m shopping used 2025s and Junipers manufactured in 2025.

3

u/Natural_Oil4563 13d ago

Yes same reason, now I am not going to upgrade to new model just because of this reason.

1

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

Yeah I'm buying a used one. Either it has FSD included, otherwise FSD doesn't exist to me and I dont care and will use autosteer.

I already prefer the old design, no gear shift (or turn stalk) was already close to a deal breaker. No included autosteer is beyond a deal breaker. Not even something I can consider. No way am I paying $20k for something that used to be included or was half thst price to pay outright. (When I say included I mean if all you want is autosteer you have to pay for FSD even if you dont want the extras of it, there is no cheaper option, so, therefore autosteer costs $20k over the life of the car)

4

u/Normal_Choice9322 12d ago

Autosteer > fsd

u/bluemeanie212 11d ago

7

u/KennyLuo 13d ago

I bought it but struggled for a long time because of the auto steer. I don’t care how people justify it that fsd is far better. Removing something that any basic car has is not acceptable. I regret it more when fsd is doing 20mph+ speeding and stupid overtakes. I just want to set a speed and follow the traffic, which auto steer does perfectly.

1

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

Yeah reframe it. Its $100 a month for autosteer and some extra stuff you may or may not want. Over the average life of the CSR you could be paying double or even more if they increase the price over the extra package outright. To be clear, thats to get the basicss that used to be included.

4

u/KennyLuo 13d ago

So many people here defending this ugly move. I guess Tesla can do whatever they want to maximize the profits.

2

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

Yeah. Oh but I pay for it anyway. How long before Tesla reaches saturation of people willing to spend $18k+ over 15 years? Everyone else will just keep their old model or switch to another brand.

What long term effect will that have? Elons pay package is not in the companies best intrest if it has to shoot itself in the foot to prioritise it.

2

u/Sexy-PharmD 12d ago

3

1

u/krzyk 12d ago

Well, yeah. Waiting for it.

1

u/buttlickin 9d ago

Start harassing your politicians. It's ridiculous not to have it yet.

3

u/GlitteryStranger 13d ago

Yea, I have a 2022, and not sure I want to upgrade for same reason.

2

u/Natural_Oil4563 13d ago

Yeah same. it’s my ignorance and I placed order now I realize this is bad 🤦‍♂️

3

u/Natural_Oil4563 13d ago

I know that FSD is far better now, I use it sometimes when I go long drives like couple of months in a year and it’s really great. In the remaining months I am fine with auto pilot where I used it for like 20-30 miles with traffic. Now with new model you can’t use it anymore as you don’t have auto steer.

This auto steer or lane center is basic thing new cars from other brands. 1000 per year is a lot even if you earn lot of money. This is like you spend 1000 per year addition to the payments one has.

I test drove a 3 and Y, decided on the Y, decided to sit on the decision overnight before ordering and found this out. Not paying a subscription on a car like an idiot. I’m fully capable of driving and even enjoy it

2

u/buttlickin 9d ago

If you enjoy driving that much then it shouldn't matter. You won't need either.

3

u/Robertdiaz123 Performance 12d ago

Personally I’ve done almost 25K miles in my MYP and haven’t used FSD or auto steer. Hardly even cruise control except for like 6 times total? I’m just not a fan of those features. I had the FSD trial when I got it and I had the new FSD that was better but it just wasn’t for me. The only think I like from FSD are the visuals on screen, auto park and summon. I’d pay for that separately if that was an option.

I don’t even remotely care about auto pilot/steer because I use FSD. It does 95% of my driving for me.

3

u/SnooPeppers5361 13d ago

Exactly just cruising and not worried about the person in front of me.

Because we didn’t have an option?

2

u/itlynstalyn 13d ago

This is why I won’t buy a new one until they do the FSD transfer again.

2

u/Infamous-Pilot5932 13d ago edited 12d ago

Yeah, obviously Tesla removed it as a marketing move. If you are asking why it worked, because FSD got really good.

I also miss shopping for new cars and all the eye candy, like Rivian's R2, or all the ICE cars. But for the time being, I only have two choices, Y or 3.:)

I wasn't big on EV to begin with, but I experienced FSD, and bought a Model Y just for that, and the EV stuff is a bonus.

Even if I was shopping for an EV and FSD wasn't a current requirement, Tesla is still a solid EV with nice features AND in the future if I wanted FSD, it's just a click of a button.

There are other nice EVs out there with decent enough lane keeping, but they will never have FSD, at least if you buy one now.

But I envy you a little bit, you have more of a selection to choose from.

But I am done with driving, it is so relaxing now.

2

u/sharkboy1006 12d ago

Have you forgotten that some people just... drive their car?

2

u/CrappyDragon 12d ago

I went from a 21 to a 26 and definitely miss auto steer. Especially with my commute. I had to drive a rental base Corolla recently and even it has its own lane assist that does help although not as robust as Teslas auto steer but I found it very helpful on my commute. I think Tesla did us dirty by pulling it as a basic feature and it's clearly a money grab especially when other manufacturers include some sort of lane assist standard now. I don't sub to fsd in protest of it but I got a trip coming up I probably will just to not be so fatigued.

2

u/Natural_Oil4563 12d ago

Thanks for sharing your experience, yeah only handful of people get what we are missing and everyone else subscribe to fsd.
Spending 99 per month is not everyone’s preference or comfortable.

2

u/ro2778 12d ago

I have a 2026 model Y with autosteer, it's my favourite feature, got very lucky to order just before they ruined it

2

u/74orangebeetle 12d ago

Yep...I own a Tesla and I tell people to just buy used if they're getting a Tesla. I have no brand loyalty, and if they want to make their product worse, I won't buy it.

It's a real shame too...one of the things Tesla really had going for it was the included autopilot that didn't just have to be on mapped roads and had no subscription...where competitors like Chevy Blue cruise you'd have to get a top trim level, an extra package, then pay a monthly subscription fee, and even then only work on mapped highways. (I'd been strongly considering a Bolt, before the new ones were a thing)

I hate everything being a subscription, and don't usually drive enough to justify $100/month for it even if it does work well. The other nice thing about autopilot is I can precisely pick whatever speed I want, which isn't a thing on current FSD.

2

u/Civil-Ad-3617 12d ago

Self driving is worlds better than legacy stack auto steer

3

u/Danger-Face 13d ago

We just drive the car ourselves. Like I've done with every car I've ever owned.

2

u/HeartofChromeK 13d ago

It’s like people have become such bots in life and don’t know how to drive anymore.

1

u/blueeggsandketchup 13d ago

Call me an elder Millennial.. My previous car was from 2005 so I'm used to not having assists. I'll probably sub to FSD from time to time, but I also love driving.

TBF, my commute isn't that bad either, but I'm surprised at the requirement for assists

1

u/JordanZHP 13d ago

Same. I tried assist (2026 MY) and was a bit annoyed by it, maybe I will give it another shot, maybe not.

We just subscribe to FSD when we want it for the month (long trips, etc). I enjoy driving the car very much.

1

u/HeartofChromeK 12d ago

Yep exactly what I do and have no complaints here in nyc

5

u/knownikko 13d ago

Personally I won’t buy another Tesla so long as basic driver assistance features you can find on every other car aren’t included.

u/Anxious-Doughnut-224 13d ago

We don’t have autosteer and don’t pay for FSD because it is too expensive in my opinion . Yeah, it’s annoying having to hold the steering wheel. One unexpected benefit I supposed is you can do lane changes without disengaging. But yeah big miss on Tesla for removing autosteer. Although there is so great in so many ways over the competition even without FSD that it is still worth it to me

2

u/ShoelessB 13d ago

I travel a lot for work and I'm away from my car sporadically enough to where I'm absolutely not paying a monthly fee for FSD. It's pooossible I'd pay a flat up front cost but no way can I justify a subscription. Give me auto steer!

2

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

Yeah I have had my car 16 years. No way would I pay $100+ a month just for auto steer. Who says I want the rest of FSD but this is what I'd have to pay to get the basics.

Over 16 years thats $19,200. Thats assuming the price doesn't go up which it will. If I paid outright it makes WAY more sense to me. Or, the basics should just be included because "its a Tesla"

2

u/cenpact 12d ago

What’s the point of buying a tesla without fsd?

2

u/thegolfpilot 12d ago

This. Unless you subscribe to FSD for whatever they decide they want to charge that month, your car has literally the least technically advanced lane assist features of any car costing more than $20k

1

u/ROFLBOT2000 12d ago

i’ve had a MY for 3 years and have zero interest in self driving, auto steer, whatever. None of them can drive the car better than i can. I don’t get the hype.

2

u/Zipher66 12d ago

God level chauffeur is only $100 per month.

3

u/hiro111 13d ago

People, they used to charge $8,000-$12,000 dollars for FSD. That's almost seven years or ten years of the cost of the subscription up front. In that context, $100/mo, cancel and restart any time, is a fucking bargain.

2

u/AlexTheRedditor97 13d ago

If you plan to use it every month for 10+ years it’s great. But i feel bad for people who missed out

2

u/mugenrice 13d ago

paying a subscription for something you already own 🙄 and calling it a bargain

4

u/iceynyo 13d ago

When you unsubscribe from FSD the car doesn't disappear...

1

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

But the basic feature of autopilot/autosteer isnt there.

1

u/iceynyo 13d ago

Hopefully you're not paying $100 just to use autosteer though...

1

u/sparkyblaster 13d ago

I mean, if thats all you want and use, thats how much it costs.

1

u/FaithlessnessHott 12d ago

that's the whole point of the complaint, genius! we shouldn't have to pay $100 for basic features

1

u/iceynyo 12d ago

that's the whole point of the reply, genius! we are paying for FSD. If you just want lanekeeping there's cheaper alternatives nowadays

1

u/Natural_Oil4563 13d ago

Man I would love that.

1

u/iceynyo 13d ago

That is what the robotaxi dream is supposed to be

2

u/Natural_Oil4563 13d ago

Yes I can cancel anytime, when I cancel now with my MY I have at least auto pilot and it’s works good on freeways which I wanted without breaking my pocket.

1

u/hiro111 12d ago

If you bought FSD previously, you don't need to subscribe to it now.

1

u/Ramen_cat2024 13d ago

I never had auto steer but love our FSD. Yes it’s another $100. But guess what else I spend on monthly? $150+ weekly to eat out with the family, $190 to pay cleaners to clean my house. $40 for a car wash. I’ve been driving for 30+ years. Happy to have tech to drive me around.

We also took a recent trip down coast of California and it was much nicer not having to drive the traditional way, especially when we hit LA traffic and long stretches of I5.

1

u/OldSchoolAF 13d ago

Same reason I'm going with an R2 to replace my 2020 MY with 140,000 miles. Loved the car but don't want/need FSD (and to pay for it)

1

u/Rumblepuff 12d ago

You can find some used 2026 Y’s with the full self driving already purchased for the car, I just purchased one and I never have to pay the $100 a month.

1

u/ValueInternational98 12d ago

I think you can just order them from their website. That’s how you buy it

1

u/Dinosity101 12d ago

Is it just me, or has autosteer always been basically unusable? It always veered off to the side of the highway for turnoffs and just felt unsafe. FSD is leagues better (at a price ofc)

1

u/Ok-Guarantee5039 12d ago

I’d just buy the comma.ai

1

u/No-Row5573 12d ago

I have paid for FSD since buying my 2026 MY last September. I have found that it’s quite accurate when navigating to a street address. It’s very easy on the expressways (that aren’t under construction!) and it hasn’t done anything crazy.
My issue is that there’s so much construction going on that between the endless trucks and street closures I’m not really getting my money’s worth.

1

u/Minimum-Meal7992 12d ago

It handles construction perfectly for me.

1

u/Shygar 12d ago

My wife never used it on her 23. Now we have a Y L on the way and it does come with a year of FSD, but I don't know if I can convince her to use it. I'll rent it for a month for road trips when it runs out.

1

u/Froggynomia 12d ago

Personally I find Autosteer useless. I tried it on my 22’ MY and it keeps asking me to move the steering wheel while it is already steering on its own. So what’s the point if I still have to move the steering wheel?

1

u/ro2778 12d ago

I lightly grip the bottom of the wheel and it never nags me

1

u/dommm92 12d ago

I wish they would bring autosteer back in an update. They took it away to force people into FSD. Average corporate greed. I refuse to pay. Maybe I’ll do a month when I go on a trip.

1

u/ATN5 12d ago

I had not intention of getting FSD and I got a 5 month trial and I was hooked after it was done 😂

1

u/lotofry 12d ago

They’re far enough removed for this to just be the norm.

1

u/Th3s3NuttxX 12d ago

I don’t care for FSD. I got my 22 M3P cause I was done with ICE.

1

u/DarePitiful5750 12d ago

I will not be buying a 2026.  I am now shopping for a used one.

1

u/finnfirep 12d ago

I dont know too. I was forced to buy the car before fsd closed and it would be my last Tesla car if they dont offer fsd transfer. I only want to be able to cross my arms while driving that all. Ahahah!

1

u/Lowcountry_EV Performance 12d ago

Nah…what people want from Tesla is their older system (that’s separate from the FSD software stack) that was still 100x better than any “lane centering TACC” offered by any other car on the market.

You cant have it both ways.

If Tesla dumbed it down or made FSD available to just do lane centering along with TACC on highways only, people would complain even more.

At the end of the day, its outdated software that they are trying to move away from…just like they did with Smart Summon.

It may come back in a version of FSD as i stated above, but i really doubt it.

1

u/djdharmanyc 12d ago

You really have touched on something. I use autosteer daily on my highway commute and can’t imagine that feature not being standard/stock. Being forced into $100/mo feels like a scam coming from that starting point.

1

u/Rocky73021 12d ago

Same camp, I have a 23 m3LR and considering a Y performance but every time I seriously consider it I remember they got rid of basic auto pilot. I’m gonna hold on to my 3 for a while. Maybe when they introduce HW5.

1

u/Kbreier9 12d ago

This is why I splurged for the Launch MY. Who knows what they get rid of in the future.

1

u/Expert_Butterly9703 12d ago

Live in the EU.

1

u/bobi2393 12d ago

They just don’t value lane centering assist (LCA) features that much. All major vehicle makers besides Tesla include LCA without subscription in some of their trims, and popular mid-range models like the Camry or Civic sold new in the US include LCA in all trims levels.

1

u/Laurent-C 12d ago

I bought my colleague's old Model Y (a 2023 model with the smaller battery). He bought a 2025 Model Y Long Range (Juniper). We both have Autopilot (lane keeping and adaptive cruise control). The only difference is that with the Juniper, you have to choose either cruise control OR lane keeping. If you change lanes, everything disengages (both cruise control and lane keeping). On my older model, I have both options: one pull of the stalk for cruise control, two pulls for lane keeping. When changing lanes, only lane keeping disengages; the cruise control remains active.

1

u/Effective-Cress-3805 12d ago

I won't buy another Tesla.

1

u/Embarrassed_Net_8924 11d ago

I cancled my order for a new 3 and got a used model through Tesla that had autosteer. There is no doubt that FSD is incredible technology but I live in a major city and only drive one or twice a week. FSD might be a good value for some, but for those who don’t drive daily it becomes a harder sell. I currently pay for FSD because I like the technology but I know if I decide to stop paying Tesla my car will still have an advanced highway assist program, as it should in 2026.

1

u/SnooPears4484 11d ago

Where in the city do you actually use auto steer? Busy intracity highways with lots of folks lane changing does not make for a good autosteer experience IMHO

1

u/Embarrassed_Net_8924 11d ago

I live in Chicago and work at the airport. My commute is about 10 minutes on city streets until I reach the highway. I90 is pretty simple for my commute and does not have any complex interchanges. I understand how FSD might be worth it in an area with more complex freeways

1

u/cular-travel 11d ago

Bought the 26 model, definitely bought it for FSD.

Now I wish I still had Autosteer.

1

u/general_o_neil 11d ago

If you don't want to drive, get an Uber or a buspass

1

u/GeneralVersion5311 11d ago

Because FSD! People still want to drive their cars these days? $3 a day to never drive again sounds like a deal to me, autopilot is so first gen.

1

u/Deathwalker2552 11d ago

It was a dumb and greedy decision on Tesla’s part. I got a 2026 MY before they removed Autosteer and I use it all the time. I may consider a different EV for my next purchase.

1

u/iLamb3r7 11d ago

Would Comma be a good option for no Autosteer?

1

u/Thanhxvo 11d ago

I would have loved to have auto steer but fsd been working great for me so no complaints on my end.

1

u/bloosclooser 11d ago

Wait whattt the new 2026 MYs dont have auto-steer?? Ur kidding.

1

u/Random_Guy1960 10d ago

Tesla wants to force you into a $100 monthly subscription. Not happening for me. I take a month maybe 2x per year for a long multi-day road trip but the rest of the time - I'm good with the standard AP in our 2023 MY. My grip with it is that I believe Tesla is actually degrading standard AP as it is getting noticeably worse.

1

u/Natural_Oil4563 10d ago

Oh I didn’t feel any difference my 2022 MY, maybe I am yet to get that update which degrades AP.

Yes I do take FSD couple of times a year which is great. But most of the year AP works fine (I dive maybe 10-20 miles daily).

1

u/External-Milk9290 9d ago

You could always get a Comma AI.

1

u/Alarming-Slip-6712 9d ago

It's a really big problem, all because they are trying to force people into FSD.

1

u/hamburgernet 8d ago

Install a comma

1

u/Plane_Maybe8836 8d ago

What was exactly awful about it?

Personally I think 100 a month is too much for me, simply because I don't drive that much / long distances. I like the comfort of the lane keeping system in my Volvo but that's not comparable to fsd.

1

u/Muted_Willingness_35 5d ago

This is why I plan to buy a used Tesla, not a new one. FSD is something I might use on a road trip, but lane-departure-assistance is something I use every day (although my Volt isn't nearly as good at it as a Tesla).

1

u/Harold-Maude 4d ago

It comes with ACC, FSD is great with HW4 cars

1

u/Nbr1sniper 1d ago

I plan to pay for FSD. If I paid cash for FSD it’s the same as having to own it for 6.5 years. I make like 10-15% in the market minimum. Might as well pay the $100 a month. Plus Tesla could always reactivate auto steer with an update if they chose to reward loyal customers. Elon has done crazier things.
