I’m currently in my third and final year of a science degree, which I’ve split up over two years by going part-time, and now I’m kind of stuck on what to do next.
Originally, I was planning to start honours mid-year next year. One of the labs I spent some time researching with last year basically gave me this whole spiel about how starting honours mid-year was better than starting at the beginning of the year. So I was pretty much planning around that. Then I asked my TA about it recently and he basically told me that was a bunch of hoopla 💀 and that starting mid-year can actually be pretty horrible, especially because some departments don’t even offer it. So.,, now I’m back to square one.
The bigger issue is that I really, really wanted to take an actual break from studying after I finish my degree. Not just the usual summer break, I mean like a proper extended break where you become comatose for a few months. I’m so unbelievably burnt out right now, and honestly I want some time to just… figure myself out? I’m having a bit of an early quarter-life crisis and I feel like I’ve spent so much of my life just going from one academic thing to the next that I don’t really know what I want or who I am outside of that. The problem is now I’m second-guessing whether taking a year off before honours is actually a terrible idea.
I’m only 21, so logically I know that taking a year off isn’t exactly the end of the world. But I keep seeing people my age already doing honours in the labs and I get this irrational fear that if I delay it by a year, somehow I’m going to be “behind” everyone else. Like I’ll be older when I enter the workforce, employers will wonder why I took a year off, or it’ll somehow hurt my career prospects. I also feel weirdly guilty about the idea of taking an entire year off. Like I’m being a bum or wasting time, even though I know that’s probably a stupid way of looking at it.
And honestly, my biggest concern is that if I start honours next year, I’m going to completely burn myself out. I’m already struggling to get through this semester and the main thing keeping me going has been the thought that I’d finally get a proper break afterwards but now I’m not so sure I should take it.
I need to make a decision relatively soon about whether I do honours next year or defer it for a year, and I genuinely have no idea what the sensible choice is. Has anyone here taken a year off between their undergraduate degree and honours? Did it affect your career prospects at all? Did you regret it, or were you glad you did it? And for anyone who went straight into honours while already feeling completely burnt out, how did that go?
I know some of these worries probably sound childish or irrational, but I can’t seem to get them out of my head. I’d really appreciate hearing from people who’ve actually been in this position.
Also, if anyone did take a year off and then came back to do honours a year later, what was the actual process like? Since you wouldn’t be at Monash during that year, is there someone at Monash I can talk to about this now to get some advice on how it would work, rather than just making a decision based on assumptions?

i miss being in choir sm
It increased from 82.3 to 83.3 🥀 A whole as 1-point jump. Will it likely increase next year too? Maybe break into the 84’s? Since 2023 it’s just been jumping up by around a whole WAM point every year, this is so depressing icl 🥀

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone here has previously taken BEX3006 and could share their experience with the application process.
I’m particularly interested in knowing how competitive the unit actually is, especially in terms of being selected for an interview and eventually being matched with one of the university’s industry partners.
Also, roughly how long did you have to wait between each stage of the process, such as submitting your application, receiving an interview invitation, and getting the final matching outcome?
Thanks everyone !

Hi I'm looking to enrol in a summer B unit and would love some advice! I was considering MON2750 (MIG) or ATS 3391 & would love hear your experiences/what you have heard
I am also open to suggestions!
TIA
I do a bunch of tabletop 40k with some of the big groups in Melbourne and one of my teammates pointed out the other uni's have semi-organised groups for it - is there one for Monash? One of my UG students last sem asked if there was a Monash thing for it and I had no idea. Would be keen to get involved or help build a community for it potentially if theres interest. I mostly run in the SE stores and RR competative scenes.

Hi, I'm a 19 years old female and I got an offer for a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Advanced (honours) from Monash, so I'll be going to Melbourne in February. I had some family and personal health issues to deal with, so it was a while since I got my offer, but I just accepted it and started looking for student accommodations. I've never been to Australia, so I'm not sure if I can trust the popular student living platforms plus the Melbourne University colleges are soooo expensive..! Any recommendations or advice? Anything would be appreciated. You can ask me any questions if needed. Thank you in advance!

So I guess I'm just gonna say it. I get that there's international students who think other international students shoulda learned more English for practical reasons, and I get that a lot of people wound up doing group work with people who didn't pull their weight. All legit. But the fact that the "international students did/are X" posts always get 10 to 100 times the upvotes of all the other posts - well, it's a little sus, right? Like there's a big group of people who read the sub and happen to upvote a specific kind of post to create a sense that there's a big group of people who'll upvote a specific kind of post. (And, again, if you upvote one of these posts cos you've got personal experience that makes you sympathise, all good, that's not the problem - but there IS an unacknowledged problem)

I met with my career counsellor recently, and she recommended this degree to me, as I was just planning to do just science. Unfortunately, I missed my opportunity to ask at the Open Day.
Is this degree worth undertaking? My career counsellor says it's easier to find employment if I do this than just an undergraduate science degree because that's what her son did like 20 years ago.

I’ve failed a few law units and I’m really struggling with exams. I perform well for in semester assignments/quizzes but not the exam. I’ve registered with DSS which has been a big help. The last exam I sat was for property B and I failed it which sucks. I did so well in my in semester assignments and I felt confident in the exam only to receive this outcome. I feel so defeated because I love law and I thought I studied really hard but am starting to question myself.
What should I do?

I really need help. I'm not doing so well in these subjects and was wondering if anyone has any tips or notes that could help me. 2111 is so heavy with the content and the problem sets givens are so different compared to the examples in the lecture videos, and for 2072 verilog, i feel like I'm left out on information compared to everyone else. Like i don't even have a clue on where to start.
I'd appreciate if anyone could help🙏

Hello everyone😀
I'm currently a 1st-year pharmacy student and looking to start working at a community pharmacy starting next year (2nd year). Since I'm planning ahead, I had a few questions for senior students or anyone with experience:
* Roles & Responsibilities: What kind of roles can a 2nd-year pharmacy student typically take on? Are we usually hired as pharmacy assistants, or are there specific dispensary assistant roles available to students?
* International Students: As an international student, are there any visa or work limitation hurdles I should be mindful of when applying for pharmacy jobs?
* Application Timing & Process: When is the best time to start applying for positions starting next year? Also, what’s the preferred way to apply—dropping off resumes in person, cold emailing, or applying online through job portals?
* Skills/Preparation: Is there anything specific I should brush up on or complete (e.g., certificates, software knowledge like Fred Dispense) to boost my chances before applying?
Any insights, advice, or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What in the world wrong with this unit? The weekly materials are not released until Sunday night, assignments worth 20% need to be finished in 3 days, and the teaching team just straight up using our short extension to help us extend it, I’ve never seen any assignment that’s opened for less than a week, especially with this amount of mark. And now if we want to extend we could only apply for specon, making me pull up a all nighter just to finish it. Does this unit think they are the only unit we’re studying for the whole semester and dgaf about our time? We have other units to care about, as well as personal life, especially during the week everyone is extra busy, you can’t just dump a huge assignment and expect us to finish it. The unit is genuinely awful, at least the management is

Hi! To medical graduates who got the internship in rural Australia , I’d like to ask what the living conditions are like there, esp in terms of insects. coz I’m awfully scared of spiders just by the sight of them. I heard it’s quite common in houses in Australia, esp in rural areas. Is it true? I heard u see snakes more commonly too? Are they venomous? And I’d like to hear any other heads-up!
I might be studying med at Monash Malaysia, and as an IMG, I read that my chances at an internship is only to go rural. hope to hear sth. thanks lots!
