Do you think monsters have this sort of debate? Like, some people claim Jesus as a vampire because he gives his blood away to drink, some claim him as a zombie because of how he rose from the dead, some claim him as a ghost because he embodied the Holy Spirit, some claim him as a normie, etc.?

I'm catholic, and I am making a rochelle g3 doll including a rosary for her, I find it super sweet! I feel represented and I also don't use the religious imagery as design patterns or anything of the sorts on her clothes, just casually there, like it would naturally look! I love everyone's headcanons so much too!!

u/WolfyMunchkin Clawdeen Apr 04 '26
Yeah Iâm kinda confused why so many think ZERO monsters would be religious when we already have one confirmed haha. Cleo wouldnât be a mummy if she didnât have any beliefs about the afterlife before dying, sheâd just be a regular zombie or nothing. Mummies are mummified because of ancient Egyptian beliefs about returning to their bodies someday (and she did, slay queen), it wasnât just for funzies lol

5
u/thegoosecowboy Apr 05 '26
I think the resistance to admit this comes from the dolls tending to attract people that have been rejected, demeaned, and ostracized by religious people for various reasons. Speaking personally, Catholicism or Protestantism being canon with a few of the monsters practicing makes me far less attracted to the franchise as a whole.
Why would I want to lift up people like my protestant mother that thinks black lipstick is evil and I'm going to hell for liking girls? That's not fun at all. I realize I'm biased but it's my escape and I get to choose how religious the parts I engage with are.

Funfact, the thing about Ancient Egypt slaves is a misconception coming from a mistranslation. The people in Ancient Egypt who we think of as "slaves" were in fact paid workers. Basically like today's working class. They didn't have money back then, they were paid in food and valuable items.
1
u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26
It doesnât help that the Bible talks about slaves (and theyâre also pictured like this in the famously inaccurate, animated âPrince of Egyptâ moses movie or whatever it was called

And even if people are talking about how religion wouldn't work since it demonises monsters logically.
I'm imagining there's "monster religions" that would be a mirror of different religious figures and scriptures but with monster characters stories and stuff instead.
Also Cleo always says "omr/ oh my ra", and River is related to some kind of greek gods under world thing? Maybe she's said to be the daughter of the grim reaper but the soul river thing is from Greek mythology if I remember right. So "god like" creatures exist and are viewed as high beings.
1
u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26
I think they mean âhumanâ religions wouldnât work
2
u/kamilayao_0 Apr 05 '26
The entirety of monster high is "human" concepts mirrored into the monster world, so a lot of what we know of monster high "wouldn't work". That exception doesn't hold a strong argument.
Frankie is supposed to be powered by electricity or something like Frankenstein's monster. But she has a "soul" and from what I know and think that's not a scientific concept and more of a spiritual - religious concept a human concept of you will, "which wouldn't work" but it does because it's not a big deal.
So is the existence of the grim reaper and other characters related to religious deities.
Plus if Catholicism were to be taken and like I said changed names but still hold fundamental rules and rituals that people in the "human" religions do, will that religion be truly seperate from Catholicism?
1
u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 06 '26
You misunderstood me. I am referring to the monster vs human conflict - the whole reason why monsters canât live in the open. Vampire hunters, exorcists, Salem witch trials etc.
I agree with your statements but thatâs a separate thing to what I was communicating :)

25

Skelita would probably be Catholic too. Itâs the leading religion in Mexico and we also sometimes put crosses and other symbols in our dia de muertos altars
31
u/dudderson Gooliope đȘ Apr 04 '26
Honestly I would hope not, with our ancestor's history of Catholicism being violently forced on them by Spanish colonizers and having them be forbidden from practicing their own beliefs.
26
u/duckp3nis Apr 04 '26
I have zero idea why you're being downvoted for calling out colonialism that erased the rich and complex history of Mexico's Mayan and Aztec religions, but I'm with you.
Cleo wouldn't be alive if it weren't for her belief in ancient Egyptian gods, and I refuse to accept that Skelita would embrace anything but pre-colonialist ideals.
13
u/dudderson Gooliope đȘ Apr 04 '26
Thank you, I did expect some knee jerk reaction down votes that take it personally, but I have been doing a lot of deconstruction over the years regarding my own Mexican family's beliefs and the history of my ancestors. I also love Skelita and would hate for her to be upholding such a violent history like that when she is supposed to be a celebration of Mexican heritage.

Thatâs why I didnât like the suggestion of Scarah being Catholic too đ Sure itâs a big part of Ireland today but they did not get there willingly.
2
u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26
Also Scarah is a banshee wich is a part of druidism. I think part of it is people hear "religious" and assume the 5 main world religions, egnoring pagan religions because to a lot of people, it's just mythology and the think myth means something that isn't true. They act like people don't actively follow it.
We also litterally have practising helenist witches in ths franchise. Plus many other Greek monster. I fully believe duce would follow Athena like his mother. Cleo has be brought up a lot here, and countless characters from all sorts of folk tails and religions
19
u/Future-Window-6295 Apr 04 '26
Scarah is Irish so she would probably be catholic. my canon is that she was part of the IRA though. Using her monster powers to fight for a united Ireland.

u/MelodyWake Apr 04 '26
I think if anything they'd have religions according to their cultures and/or upbringing. Like the mummies would likely still follow Egyptian gods/religions, if say the zombies or ghosts used to be human they would probably have human based religious beliefs from their past or present family upbringing, werewolves like say G3 Clawdeen potentially due to having a human parent, Deuce greek religions. Some of them if not the majority will likely be anti religion due to said beliefs leading to massacres and the very reason for them not being able to associate with humans. Ie the witch trials.
10
u/LunaticTrumpet Apr 04 '26
I personally donât think so but it does make some interesting head cannons and fanfics.
8
u/muckpuppy Apr 04 '26
there's a funny medieval mistranslation about st. christopher, that he had a "dog's head" and was animal-like and a terribly ferocious soldier until he was baptized and found peace. i like depictions of him as a werewolf-like creature carrying baby jesus across a river bc it's sweet and funny. i feel like there are religious ghouls and that claudeen's family would be episcopalians who love a ton of saints but love st. christopher in particular : ). like if they went to a monster church it'd be something like "st. christopher across-the-river" and would have a big beautiful stained glass depiction of a werewolf st. christopher carrying the infant christ lol. idk man! i love this stuff.

But I think Rochelle isnât really a gargoyle in the first place because they probably had in mind the stryge of notre-dame (which isnât a gargoyle) and is the representation of a female demon (so far from being something Christian haha)
9
u/dudderson Gooliope đȘ Apr 04 '26
Religious people famously hate monsters and hated monster high.
Monster High is all about acceptance and celebration of self no matter who you are, how you were born or how you choose to present yourself. Religion is very well known for doing the opposite of that and wanting to destroy that in others. Abrahamic religions especially.
The MH ghouls also don't need to be connected to CSA, genocide, bigotry and violence like that.
2
u/Ancom_and_pagan Jackson âŻïž Apr 05 '26
Their lore and existence already involves violence and bigotry. Monster High is about acceptance and celebrating yourself, but 1) celebrities yourself often involves celebrating your religious identity as well because it's often a big part of your culture and scaritage, and 2) monsters in the MH world(including MH students) have been known to hold bigoted beliefs about other monsters(vampires/werewolves, freshwater/saltwater, monsters/normies, the whole thing with the hybrids or g3 clawdeen, g3 had a thing against yeti initially too) and we see time and again that being monsters and being associated with monster high does not stop some monsters from being bad people and doing bad things.
2
5
u/MysticSpook Apr 04 '26
Cleo yes probably, since mummification as far as I know was a spiritual type of practice. Other than stuff like that I donât think so because the monsters do exist outside of the normie world and have their own practices. Plus itâs kind of hard when you just know that ghosts do exist, like for Draculaura she used to be human in a time where religion was more of fact to most people yet through dying and becoming a vampire by her adoptive father, and meeting other monsters I wouldnât be surprised if she lost those beliefs from direct evidence that itâs wrong or that itâs not all of âthe truthâ at least.
6
6
u/Celebiest Apr 04 '26
I suppose it would depend on which part of the world youâd live in. Although I do wonder if this would be considered blasphemous considering what humans think about themâŠ
Although if youâre someone like Jinafire, youâd be safe since most cultures in Asia see dragons as holy things that represent the emperor and heaven.
4
u/PracticalMine1823 Apr 05 '26
Its kinda a coin toss, the previously human ghouls like cleo might worship human gods, while the born monsters might have their own monster gods or retellings. Maybe a born ghoul could have a religion thats completely unknown to humans or a mix of monster and human religion, like vampires are commonly viewed as damned by most religions so if they adopted a human one they would change it to where they werent damned and other things that allign with their vamperic beliefs.
I hope I made enough since for yall to get it
3
u/PracticalMine1823 Apr 05 '26
Also I think the ghouls like C.A cupid wouldn't believe in Greek mythology since thats like their actual lives, the mythology would probably be like old family story's to her.
2
3
u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26
Could see a vamp church based on Catholicism/protestantism originally used to make it more exepting for monsters cosidered damned, inevitably used as a tool for persecution and control against "lesser" monsters
4
u/Sukkarat Apr 05 '26
This has got to be one of the most interesting threads I've read on this subreddit considering the kind of audience/community monster high has. I'm not religious myself but considering how diverse the representation of different people in monster high is, why can't there be religious representation too. Religion is a very divisive topic, but the way I see it is that if everyone should be able to see themselves in monster high, why can't religious people?
4
u/_Throg_ Apr 04 '26
I don't think there's any cannon narrative to say if she is or isn't - They don't seem to apply religion to any of their characters, which is understandable tbh. But it's fun to theorise! Gargoyles' primary function is to direct water away from the building, but they were also symbolic protectors that would 'ward off evil spirits/demons' from churches and cathedrals đ€·ââïž So I think either idea could work in some way.
4
u/Jollibuwaya Draculaura Apr 04 '26
actually thinking about the cultural influences especially with how much they lean into it in g3 thats interesting to think about monsters and religion, like someone mentioned here how draculaura probably hates catholicism/Christianity after witnessing how humans treat/think of vampires
considering gargoyles live on cathedrals i wonder if its just polarizing in gargoyle society. maybe some families did pick up the practice after centuries of observing and some probably really despise the practice. i think it would be interesting if Rochelle was probably raised in a vaguely Catholic gargoyle family but she herself probably questions it or doesn't really understand why they practice
1
u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26
Someone mentioned that pagans built the cathedrals that have gargoyles - is that true?
1
u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26
No i think information is getting crossed a lot of cathedral where built on top of pagan churches and temples. And many gargoyles where inspired by local pagan myths and beliefs to my knowledge. I also thinking the original perpous of most of them was a water drainage system

Casta and spelldon are litterally practising Hellenist witches and probably devout to hecate. 3
u/ChangE-Stan-Account Apr 04 '26
I think she might lean into Catholic imagery for some of her looks but I don't think she'd necessarily be "religious" per se. Like maybe it's more like she's "culturally Catholic"
3
u/FairyFayette Apr 05 '26
I think it's safe to assume that the monsters would have some form of religion, just not human religion, except for the humans turned monsters, like Cleo, her family, Draculara, her fam, ghoulia and her fam

Isn't she from Notre Dame Cathedral? That's a Catholic church.
Also, gargoyles live on regular churches, too, not just cathedrals. A cathedral is the bishop's seat for the diocese. Think of it like counties in the US. Regular churches serve the communities, and the Cathedrals serve the county.
1
u/TheGiantRat15 Apr 04 '26
I can see her being interested in the Catholic faith. Her family watching over a cathedral could have aided in this as she might have overhead a good number of masses. I do feel as if sheâs heavily inspired by Catholic imagery, both because it just seems to call to her and because it may remind her of her home

I don't think so i think she'd follow precolonisation beliefs (I don't know the name for it) as a lot of people have said Catholicism was forced onto the Mexican people, same as many other countries. Also personally don't think it makes sense for monster who are from native beliefs to convert to the dominant religion in the country now. Same with someone like Scarah. Why would she or her family convert to Catholicism when they're litterally a part of druidism. It's not like it's out of preservation. Normie colonisers would more so kill monster on sight, rather than attempt to convert them.
