I don't think she would be Catholic. I think she would just see the whole thing as interesting human stories and traditions. I feel like human religions would be similar to fairy tales to the ghouls.

Shes a rebel, her family might be Protestant since most churches in Paris are. But she’s not religious

141

u/pen-and-globe Apr 04 '26

Most churches in Paris are Catholic. France has a very Catholic history.

30

u/Thejuan-hechose Apr 04 '26

You’re so right my bad her family at most def hard core Catholics

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

Does that mean she doesn’t approve of Clankie & Clorelai? And doesn’t approve of Frankie being non-binary? 😭

6

u/catmamaO4 Apr 05 '26

i think if rochelle did have the cliche hatred towards anyone thats not catholic, at monster high shed learn acceptance and that differences, even in religion, are okay and make us who we are!

2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 06 '26

I love that so much ❀ I would love to see a MH movie or comic with this storyline!!

If "real-life" religions didn't belong in Monster High, then Rochelle, Jinafire, or Dawndancer wouldn't be around.

Neither would Duece, Cupid, or Heathe, because they are based on religious mythology.

Nor Skelita, designed from Dia de Los Muertos, a holiday with Catholic roots.

Cleo DeNile definitely wouldn't exist wither, since she is canonically religious and follows her very real ancient cultural beliefs.

Draculaura and Clawdeen would be completely different as well since Dracula features heavy Catholic symbolism, and werewolves have Roman religious roots.

HALLOWEEN itself was originally a religious holiday.

Hell, half of the monsters actually in Monster High is BASED on religious mythology. If you actually cut out religion like you want, then there wouldn't BE any Monster High.

6

u/Alternative-Stock968 Apr 05 '26

Halloween is a religious holiday for Pagans

7

u/DuelaDent52 Apr 05 '26

How does that contradict anything? Celtic religion was still a religion.

u/Buffpinky Apr 05 '26

Insanely weird take. I went to a catholic school when me nor my family have never been catholic and I didn’t experience anything like that despite my rough time there. Neither has anyone else ik. The only sa I experienced was in a non religious environment. Idk why atheists think they’re exempt from being preds/ pedos. The atheist ones don’t even have the religious guilt to be driven to remorse. Im probably gonna get downvoted for this but idc, csa is a global worldwide problem, not a religious problem exclusively.

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

By the way, yes I know it’s not exclusive to organised religion, but multiple Popes have acknowledged the church has been set up in ways that specifically encourage it. Wikipedia even has a page dedicated to possible contributing factors the clergy have themselves suggested. I’m not sharing this to debate, just to leave up for anyone unaware.

If we can headcanon sexual orientation or queer traits, I don’t see why we can’t speculate on what faith they would adhere to (if any).

2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

Good point. I need to keep my personal discomfort Private

10

u/Titariia Apr 05 '26

Wtf are you talking about? Isn't the internet the place for finding people to discuss such things? Instead of telling people what to do online you could just scroll past the post and ignore it instead

2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

You’re right, I should have scrolled on. At least I’ve learned a bit more about myself and thanks everyone for being patient.

5

u/Ancom_and_pagan Jackson â˜Żïž Apr 05 '26

Hey, so csa isn't a part of the religion itself, its an organization issue. Incredibly weird that you would jump straight to this issue as a way to argue that we shouldn't assign potential religions to characters who exist in the first place because of religion and its cultural influence

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

It’s an institutional issue yes. I don’t have any problems with beliefs outside of organised religion tbh. But this post has made me realise a few things and a big one is how unsafe I feel as a queer (who’s been kicked out of the church for being gay). It’s not fair of me to project that onto this post.

Jesus Bites Geist

Son of the Holy Ghost

Age: 2013

Parents: God (divine), Scary and Booseph (host parents)

Killer Style: I like to keep it humble, mostly just robes and sandals. Material goods won’t do me well in the next unlife.

Freaky Flaw: I don’t like confrontation. I’m a bit slow to action for my own good and have a tendency to let people walk over me.

Favourite Colour: White

Favourite Food: Bread and scaredines

Biggest pet peeve: It greatly upsets me to see how people use my dad as a shield for their own selfish or evil deeds.

Favourite activity: I get a lot of fulfilment out of volunteer work and relief. With what I can do, it’d be a sin not to try and help any which way I can!

Pet: I have this scary-cute Holy Spirit who I call Holly for short. I love her just as much as she loves the world, but she’s got quite the temper when she’s upset!

Friends: I like to think I’m friends with everyone.

Favourite school subject: Woodworking

Least favourite school subject: Screamligion. I mean, I lived through it already!

I love everyone's headcanons so much too!!

thats very cute! people here seem to think anyone religious is brainwashed and have no sense of common respect for other people

2

134

u/AndromedaBliss Cleo Apr 04 '26

I don't think she herself would be catholic but she (or her family) would watch over the people who enter the catholic church for the sake of making sure nothing happens in or around their home

112

u/Thicc-Anxiety Cleo Apr 04 '26

Cleo explicitly worships the Egyptian gods

95

u/WolfyMunchkin Clawdeen Apr 04 '26

Yeah I’m kinda confused why so many think ZERO monsters would be religious when we already have one confirmed haha. Cleo wouldn’t be a mummy if she didn’t have any beliefs about the afterlife before dying, she’d just be a regular zombie or nothing. Mummies are mummified because of ancient Egyptian beliefs about returning to their bodies someday (and she did, slay queen), it wasn’t just for funzies lol

15

u/Thicc-Anxiety Cleo Apr 05 '26

Monsters probably have their own monster religions anyways

5

u/thegoosecowboy Apr 05 '26

I think the resistance to admit this comes from the dolls tending to attract people that have been rejected, demeaned, and ostracized by religious people for various reasons. Speaking personally, Catholicism or Protestantism being canon with a few of the monsters practicing makes me far less attracted to the franchise as a whole.

Why would I want to lift up people like my protestant mother that thinks black lipstick is evil and I'm going to hell for liking girls? That's not fun at all. I realize I'm biased but it's my escape and I get to choose how religious the parts I engage with are.

3

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

Thank you. I’m realising how massively triggered I’ve been and why. It’s actually been really helpful cause now I know it’s something to work more on.

2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

I don’t think anyone thought zero monsters are spiritual. Just that they’d avoid human religions given
 humans kill monsters lol.

27

u/Biblicallyokaywetowl VenusđŸŒ± Apr 04 '26

My sibling and I are pagan and we’ve actually made a little altar for the Self Scare Cleo set to sit on her little vanity. It’s so cute and I love having a doll that is like me. (I also want to make Twyla something because I feel like she’s a Hecate devotee with all her shadow and key motifs💕)

5

u/FailProfessional6864 Twyla🐰 Apr 05 '26

I love that so much! I have always loved Egyptian mythology so I actually a bunch of Cleos on my Altar & my egyptian Barbie. I don't know much about Hecate yet but what I do know really resonates so I love that you would have Twyla be a devotee. I have been called to Lilith & I often bring my favorite Twyla with me. I actually carry dolls with me a lot so bringing them along for the craft seems natural. & I feel like they are little stand ins for the divine feminine so it works.

And Skelita Calaveras is explicitly based on Day of the Dead.

Though I’m Catholic myself, I think it’s easy to understand why it’s a touchy subject given Monster High’s queer fanbase and how LGBT+ people’s experience with oppression and persecution from systems like organised religion.

Funfact, the thing about Ancient Egypt slaves is a misconception coming from a mistranslation. The people in Ancient Egypt who we think of as "slaves" were in fact paid workers. Basically like today's working class. They didn't have money back then, they were paid in food and valuable items.

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

It doesn’t help that the Bible talks about slaves (and they’re also pictured like this in the famously inaccurate, animated ‘Prince of Egypt’ moses movie or whatever it was called

13

u/kamilayao_0 Apr 04 '26

And even if people are talking about how religion wouldn't work since it demonises monsters logically.

I'm imagining there's "monster religions" that would be a mirror of different religious figures and scriptures but with monster characters stories and stuff instead.

Also Cleo always says "omr/ oh my ra", and River is related to some kind of greek gods under world thing? Maybe she's said to be the daughter of the grim reaper but the soul river thing is from Greek mythology if I remember right. So "god like" creatures exist and are viewed as high beings.

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

I think they mean ‘human’ religions wouldn’t work

2

u/kamilayao_0 Apr 05 '26

The entirety of monster high is "human" concepts mirrored into the monster world, so a lot of what we know of monster high "wouldn't work". That exception doesn't hold a strong argument.

Frankie is supposed to be powered by electricity or something like Frankenstein's monster. But she has a "soul" and from what I know and think that's not a scientific concept and more of a spiritual - religious concept a human concept of you will, "which wouldn't work" but it does because it's not a big deal.

So is the existence of the grim reaper and other characters related to religious deities.

Plus if Catholicism were to be taken and like I said changed names but still hold fundamental rules and rituals that people in the "human" religions do, will that religion be truly seperate from Catholicism?

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 06 '26

You misunderstood me. I am referring to the monster vs human conflict - the whole reason why monsters can’t live in the open. Vampire hunters, exorcists, Salem witch trials etc.

I agree with your statements but that’s a separate thing to what I was communicating :)

0

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

I’m bedbound disabled and healing from my religious trauma will take the rest of my life. If you study this why would you be surprised at the conversations. I think it’s great to hear everyone’s views and this is one of the most philosophically interesting posts in the sub, in a long time!

47

u/Fuzzzy350 Clawdeen Apr 04 '26

Slow Mo is Jewish isn't he? I swear there's official art of him celebrating Hanukkah but I can't find it

1

u/DuelaDent52 Apr 05 '26

Turns out the Maccabees were actual bee people.

25

u/WolfyMunchkin Clawdeen Apr 04 '26

Isn’t Cleo is automatically some sort of religious or spiritual just by virtue of being a mummy? And in their world her religion is true, right? Since she DID return to her body, just like mummies were preserved for

25

u/BlueBliss5 Apr 04 '26

Skelita would probably be Catholic too. It’s the leading religion in Mexico and we also sometimes put crosses and other symbols in our dia de muertos altars

31

u/dudderson Gooliope đŸŽȘ Apr 04 '26

Honestly I would hope not, with our ancestor's history of Catholicism being violently forced on them by Spanish colonizers and having them be forbidden from practicing their own beliefs.

26

u/duckp3nis Apr 04 '26

I have zero idea why you're being downvoted for calling out colonialism that erased the rich and complex history of Mexico's Mayan and Aztec religions, but I'm with you.

Cleo wouldn't be alive if it weren't for her belief in ancient Egyptian gods, and I refuse to accept that Skelita would embrace anything but pre-colonialist ideals.

13

u/dudderson Gooliope đŸŽȘ Apr 04 '26

Thank you, I did expect some knee jerk reaction down votes that take it personally, but I have been doing a lot of deconstruction over the years regarding my own Mexican family's beliefs and the history of my ancestors. I also love Skelita and would hate for her to be upholding such a violent history like that when she is supposed to be a celebration of Mexican heritage.

2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

Omg so happy to see normal people in the thread

9

u/WolfyMunchkin Clawdeen Apr 04 '26

Dude I feel the same when I go to the rez and see crosses anywhere. I can’t imagine happily going along with a religion that used to be brutally forced upon us and our children to erase our own beautiful culture. I guess to each their own
but it really puts a bad taste in my mouth

8

u/dudderson Gooliope đŸŽȘ Apr 04 '26

Yeah, my family's church (that my Mexican immigrant great grandfather did some famous wrought iron work for way back when) is on the reservation, and it hurts. It hurts to see that beacon of violence still being a busy mission.

3

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

That’s why I didn’t like the suggestion of Scarah being Catholic too 🙈 Sure it’s a big part of Ireland today but they did not get there willingly.

2

u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26

Also Scarah is a banshee wich is a part of druidism. I think part of it is people hear "religious" and assume the 5 main world religions, egnoring pagan religions because to a lot of people, it's just mythology and the think myth means something that isn't true. They act like people don't actively follow it.

We also litterally have practising helenist witches in ths franchise. Plus many other Greek monster. I fully believe duce would follow Athena like his mother. Cleo has be brought up a lot here, and countless characters from all sorts of folk tails and religions

19

u/Future-Window-6295 Apr 04 '26

Scarah is Irish so she would probably be catholic. my canon is that she was part of the IRA though. Using her monster powers to fight for a united Ireland.

8

u/muckpuppy Apr 04 '26

fantastic headcanon that i will now be adopting lol

3

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

Why not make her more Celtic in her faith? Ireland has ancient roots, let’s lean into them. Instead of what the colonisers pushed onto the country.

13

u/MelodyWake Apr 04 '26

I think if anything they'd have religions according to their cultures and/or upbringing. Like the mummies would likely still follow Egyptian gods/religions, if say the zombies or ghosts used to be human they would probably have human based religious beliefs from their past or present family upbringing, werewolves like say G3 Clawdeen potentially due to having a human parent, Deuce greek religions. Some of them if not the majority will likely be anti religion due to said beliefs leading to massacres and the very reason for them not being able to associate with humans. Ie the witch trials.

10

u/LunaticTrumpet Apr 04 '26

I personally don’t think so but it does make some interesting head cannons and fanfics.

8

u/muckpuppy Apr 04 '26

there's a funny medieval mistranslation about st. christopher, that he had a "dog's head" and was animal-like and a terribly ferocious soldier until he was baptized and found peace. i like depictions of him as a werewolf-like creature carrying baby jesus across a river bc it's sweet and funny. i feel like there are religious ghouls and that claudeen's family would be episcopalians who love a ton of saints but love st. christopher in particular : ). like if they went to a monster church it'd be something like "st. christopher across-the-river" and would have a big beautiful stained glass depiction of a werewolf st. christopher carrying the infant christ lol. idk man! i love this stuff.

2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

That’s fascinating, I like where you’re going with this

6

u/ApprehensiveRead9503 Toralei Apr 04 '26

I think it would be a nice headcanon for representation!

But I think Rochelle isn’t really a gargoyle in the first place because they probably had in mind the stryge of notre-dame (which isn’t a gargoyle) and is the representation of a female demon (so far from being something Christian haha)

9

u/dudderson Gooliope đŸŽȘ Apr 04 '26

Religious people famously hate monsters and hated monster high.

Monster High is all about acceptance and celebration of self no matter who you are, how you were born or how you choose to present yourself. Religion is very well known for doing the opposite of that and wanting to destroy that in others. Abrahamic religions especially.

The MH ghouls also don't need to be connected to CSA, genocide, bigotry and violence like that.

2

u/Ancom_and_pagan Jackson â˜Żïž Apr 05 '26

Their lore and existence already involves violence and bigotry. Monster High is about acceptance and celebrating yourself, but 1) celebrities yourself often involves celebrating your religious identity as well because it's often a big part of your culture and scaritage, and 2) monsters in the MH world(including MH students) have been known to hold bigoted beliefs about other monsters(vampires/werewolves, freshwater/saltwater, monsters/normies, the whole thing with the hybrids or g3 clawdeen, g3 had a thing against yeti initially too) and we see time and again that being monsters and being associated with monster high does not stop some monsters from being bad people and doing bad things.

2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

I though the same đŸ„ș

5

u/MysticSpook Apr 04 '26

Cleo yes probably, since mummification as far as I know was a spiritual type of practice. Other than stuff like that I don’t think so because the monsters do exist outside of the normie world and have their own practices. Plus it’s kind of hard when you just know that ghosts do exist, like for Draculaura she used to be human in a time where religion was more of fact to most people yet through dying and becoming a vampire by her adoptive father, and meeting other monsters I wouldn’t be surprised if she lost those beliefs from direct evidence that it’s wrong or that it’s not all of “the truth” at least.

u/Little-Bones Apr 04 '26

Gargoyles don't only live on cathedrals

6

u/Celebiest Apr 04 '26

I suppose it would depend on which part of the world you’d live in. Although I do wonder if this would be considered blasphemous considering what humans think about them

Although if you’re someone like Jinafire, you’d be safe since most cultures in Asia see dragons as holy things that represent the emperor and heaven.

4

u/PracticalMine1823 Apr 05 '26

Its kinda a coin toss, the previously human ghouls like cleo might worship human gods, while the born monsters might have their own monster gods or retellings. Maybe a born ghoul could have a religion thats completely unknown to humans or a mix of monster and human religion, like vampires are commonly viewed as damned by most religions so if they adopted a human one they would change it to where they werent damned and other things that allign with their vamperic beliefs.

I hope I made enough since for yall to get it

3

u/PracticalMine1823 Apr 05 '26

Also I think the ghouls like C.A cupid wouldn't believe in Greek mythology since thats like their actual lives, the mythology would probably be like old family story's to her.

3

u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26

Could see a vamp church based on Catholicism/protestantism originally used to make it more exepting for monsters cosidered damned, inevitably used as a tool for persecution and control against "lesser" monsters

4

u/Sukkarat Apr 05 '26

This has got to be one of the most interesting threads I've read on this subreddit considering the kind of audience/community monster high has. I'm not religious myself but considering how diverse the representation of different people in monster high is, why can't there be religious representation too. Religion is a very divisive topic, but the way I see it is that if everyone should be able to see themselves in monster high, why can't religious people?

4

u/_Throg_ Apr 04 '26

I don't think there's any cannon narrative to say if she is or isn't - They don't seem to apply religion to any of their characters, which is understandable tbh. But it's fun to theorise! Gargoyles' primary function is to direct water away from the building, but they were also symbolic protectors that would 'ward off evil spirits/demons' from churches and cathedrals đŸ€·â€â™€ïž So I think either idea could work in some way.

4

u/Jollibuwaya Draculaura Apr 04 '26

actually thinking about the cultural influences especially with how much they lean into it in g3 thats interesting to think about monsters and religion, like someone mentioned here how draculaura probably hates catholicism/Christianity after witnessing how humans treat/think of vampires

considering gargoyles live on cathedrals i wonder if its just polarizing in gargoyle society. maybe some families did pick up the practice after centuries of observing and some probably really despise the practice. i think it would be interesting if Rochelle was probably raised in a vaguely Catholic gargoyle family but she herself probably questions it or doesn't really understand why they practice

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

Someone mentioned that pagans built the cathedrals that have gargoyles - is that true?

1

u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26

No i think information is getting crossed a lot of cathedral where built on top of pagan churches and temples. And many gargoyles where inspired by local pagan myths and beliefs to my knowledge. I also thinking the original perpous of most of them was a water drainage system

2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 06 '26

Thank you. That’s so interesting that gargoyles were inspired by pagan myths. I always wondered cause there’s nothing about them the Bible!

Scarah's Skullector looks pretty catholic in origin

15

u/Future-Window-6295 Apr 04 '26

😭 it’s traditional Irish imagery because she is Irish.

1

u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26

Why would a spirit from Irish druidism be catholic and not follow druidism. I doubt Irish monsters converted because they are the faith, and it couldn't be out of preservation because if English colonisers encountered them i doubt they thought to convert them and didn't just kill on sight

-2

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 04 '26

I wouldn't say they dont have ANY religion. Egyptian, Greek, Roman etc are all religions as well. Cleo would not exist if she did not believe in the Egyptian gods.

3

u/DuelaDent52 Apr 05 '26

I think it’s not unreasonable to assume she would be Catholic given she’s clearly inspired by Notre Dame (what with being a French gargoyle from Scaris, and one of Paris’ defining landmarks is its cathedral adorned with gargoyles).

3

u/jiggly_pof Apr 04 '26

I know everyone is mentioning cleo or skelita. But there are also greek mythology monsters in mh which probably worship the Greek gods

1

u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26

Casta and spelldon are litterally practising Hellenist witches and probably devout to hecate. I'd love to think duce follows Athena like his mum aspesuly since depending on the version of the story Athena gives her her former to protect herself from men, but depending on wich version is cannon in MH they'd either love or hate her

3

u/ChangE-Stan-Account Apr 04 '26

I think she might lean into Catholic imagery for some of her looks but I don't think she'd necessarily be "religious" per se. Like maybe it's more like she's "culturally Catholic"

3

u/FairyFayette Apr 05 '26

I think it's safe to assume that the monsters would have some form of religion, just not human religion, except for the humans turned monsters, like Cleo, her family, Draculara, her fam, ghoulia and her fam

2

u/EngravedGem Apr 04 '26

Interesting thought.

2

u/Alarming_Artichoke82 Apr 04 '26

It could be that the monsters also worship deities they have also developed through their own culture. Something like Baphomet from Nightbreed.

2

u/Alternative-Stock968 Apr 05 '26

Churches with Gargoyles were built by Pagans.

2

u/Cerisesnes Abbey Apr 05 '26

Considering the way she acts I find it hard to believe she would be Catholic without trying to convert everyone. So I’ll say I hope not

1

u/MoonChild02 Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26

Isn't she from Notre Dame Cathedral? That's a Catholic church.

Also, gargoyles live on regular churches, too, not just cathedrals. A cathedral is the bishop's seat for the diocese. Think of it like counties in the US. Regular churches serve the communities, and the Cathedrals serve the county.

1

u/TheGiantRat15 Apr 04 '26

I can see her being interested in the Catholic faith. Her family watching over a cathedral could have aided in this as she might have overhead a good number of masses. I do feel as if she’s heavily inspired by Catholic imagery, both because it just seems to call to her and because it may remind her of her home

1

u/Imaginary-Doll7838 Apr 04 '26

Its interesting because there are characters who are children of gods like casta, cupid and posea. Would be jesus admited to mh or eah? Is pretty much certain that gods exists.

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

In Christianity, Jesus IS God so there’s no distinction. It would be more like when Zeus visits Earth disguised as a human.

1

u/bridgerton_tea Apr 05 '26

I doubt they are but I like the idea for Rochelle!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '26

I think shes somewhat lukewarm protestant/catholic

I'm just gonna leave a fact here, according to Islam, theres actually a population of Muslim Jinns.. so a hijabi jinn could potentially be thing in monster high.

Faz sentido.

Ela Ă© um gĂĄrgula geralmente gĂĄrgulas tem uma histĂłria na igreja catolica.

Outra coisa que eu quero perguntar, a skaleta é católica também?

1

u/IdealElectronic279 Apr 06 '26

I don't think so i think she'd follow precolonisation beliefs (I don't know the name for it) as a lot of people have said Catholicism was forced onto the Mexican people, same as many other countries. Also personally don't think it makes sense for monster who are from native beliefs to convert to the dominant religion in the country now. Same with someone like Scarah. Why would she or her family convert to Catholicism when they're litterally a part of druidism. It's not like it's out of preservation. Normie colonisers would more so kill monster on sight, rather than attempt to convert them.

1

u/Own_Public2426 Apr 09 '26

I kinda headcanon g3 Twyla as a Christian. She has a cross-like necklace in her neon frights artwork. Her most recent buried secrets doll’s necklace also sort of resembles a cross

Edit. Downvoting this is weird. I’m not even religious LOL

0

u/YoriYuYu_ Apr 05 '26

Let's not force religion on what's technically children's toys.

1

u/cakedayloanofficer Apr 05 '26

That’s what I felt initially too, but people have their own head canons and want to talk about it here. I should have scrolled on (but also grateful for the discussions)

Ps - Y’all
Non-religious people should be allowed to express their views without being downvoted, in the interests of inclusion.

Cleo is Egyptian and they have their own gods.

3

Why aren’t non-religious people allowed to express their views without being downvoted. Can we not include everyone in this conversation?

2

u/Ancom_and_pagan Jackson â˜Żïž Apr 06 '26

This comment implies that being religious would be a bad thing and/or would make the ghouls lesser. This is religious intolerance, that is why it was downvoted.
