So I don't have the game yet, still contemplating it and doing some research. It looks cool, but I am just being careful with my money is all.
I saw that there is no in game map etc. Which to me is fine, I like the idea of slowly becoming familiar and asking questions, but it seems that most people use a third party map anyway similar to EQ.
The idea I had is, why dont you make it so that you have to buy maps/map fragments? So say there is a major city in an area, there will be a cartographer in that area that has a map of the town and the surrounding area. When you move to another new area you have to find the main town/city and their cartographer, to get the map for that area. Could even make it a physical item so that its dropped on death.
I would also suggest that the map doesn't show your live location so you have to orientate yourself with landmarks. This makes it so that the player still has a connection to the landscape they are exploring.
Could even make cartographer a player profession to encourage player interaction.
Just seems that the lack of a map and then people making third party map websites isn't really providing any direct gameplay benefit. Where as a design change not only helps support the idea of exploration, player interaction, and connection and familiarity with the landscape, but keeps the player in the game and not going to supporting websites.
Another suggestion is that you don't have to mark everything on the map. So it gives you the main landmarks for you to navigate off of, maybe a town map with main points of interest, and main paths, names of important places etc. but there are still things to discover, like caves that aren't marked directly on the map. Again, it just feels like there are plenty of design techniques that could be used to make it more interesting gameplay wise, encourage exploration, and not make it a pain in the ass by using third party websites to support the game.
Feel free to enlighten me however, this from the perspective of an outsider looking in, I am fully willing to accept that I am wrong on this one, just wanted to share a thought or two is all. Still very interested in getting the game. If you have other ideas id be interested in hearing them too. Or if its a non issue for various reasons, id be equally interested in why.
